5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer
This book is the one to read if you want to know the details on the Prostate and prostate cancer. Also, its a must read if you think you want to handle it with surgery'

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, accurate and balanced
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I, like many other men, did a great deal of reading (both books and internet sources). One thing you find out quickly is - there's almost too much information out there, and it is vitally important to separate the "wheat" from the "chaff".I read Dr. Walsh's book first, and kept going back to it as I read other material.
3-0 out of 5 stars a gem of the past
tis is a very good overall background provider and 3-4 yrs ago would be a biblehowever it is not up to date and does not contain good info re IMRT(intensive radiation) or robotic surgery( Da Vinci Machine)- it is excellent re diet but needs to be supplemented(or a new edition perhaps) to get the latest on possible procedures, side effects and outcomes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Caution, Proceed with extreme caution
DANGER - Read and follow this book at your own peril! Some of the things in this book will get you killed!!! Do not try to treat yourself alone with this book. Please follow this book only with the direct help of a qualified medical professional. I am in no way related to the writing, publishing or printing industries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
Three months ago I took a PSA test and it came back 8.79 ng/mL. I had no other symptoms and started looking for an alternative to what the doctors wanted me to do. I found this book and followed the instructions which include a strict diet, exercise and 20+ vitamins. I took another PSA test two weeks ago and just received the results today: 4.5 ng/mL. Still elevated but quite a remarkable improvement in just two months. It will be interesting to see what it will be six months or a year from now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves lives
All I can say is that a prominent physician who does some of the greatest number of diagnostic workups for Prostate conditions had the courage to recommend Larry Clapps work in addition to the mainstream approaches as an alternative as he had seen so many benefit from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Health in 90 Days
It will probably be a while before I'm sure how helpful the book will be.So far, though, I'm pleased with the information.
1-0 out of 5 stars Many Conclusions and Opinions- Little Evidence
Offers many unique and very unusual opinions, but unfortunately almost none are supported by direct references to a study, clinical trial, or scientific article. Statement after statement is presented as fact with no support. With so many strong conclusive statements presented, if the results are so clear, where are the studies, medical articles and comparative trails with supporting results!! Book cannot or doesn't provide. Appendix does provide general references/addresses/phone numbers of other "..Healers and Products". I do not recommend this book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO UNDERSTAND
A necessary foundation to begin the process of learning about prostrate cancer, what to ask when going to the doctor, and help in deciding which treatment is best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough, easy to read
My wife and I found this book to be extremely user-friendly. My doctor suggested this book before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it helped us understand the entire diagnosis process. It is completely up-to-date, including nutritional discussions, and it was the best resource we found that discusses all of our treatment options objectively. It was by far the easiest to use and understand compared to some of the other books available--it wasn't preachy and it didn't talk down to the reader. This book has become a well-worn companion of ours and we highly recommend it to anyone that has questions or concerns about their prostate health in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite on this topic
Contrary to other readers, I didn't appreciate this book quite as much as Prostrate Cancer for Dummies. Some of the advice was in conflict with other sources, and I was really concerned with the section that suggested it was kosher to return to the diagnosing urologist for the surgery.Skill and experience are critical for this surgery - I think you should find the best (and forget about professional courtesy).I also felt like the author tended to be arrogant with his opinions.Just my opinion, but I wish I had gotten Walsh's book which I've seen recommended on multiple support sites.I am very happy, though, with the Prostate Cancer for Dummies book which I found to be upbeat and easy to understand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eat To Beat Prostate Cancer
David Ricketts is back again, and better than ever!In his newest cookbook,
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one
Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer is an excellent resource for many folks. It is NOT just for those dealing with prostate cancer. It is chock full of interesting and tasty recipes which include a variety of soy products. There is a full complement of recipes ranging from appetizers to desserts.Any woman who wants to include soy in her diet to deal with menopausal symptoms, any person who wants to decrease the amount of animal protein in his/her diet or any parent who wants to include high quality soy protein in the family meal plan should invest in this resource. It is much more than just a cookbook.I have purchased many soy based cookbooks over the years looking for something like "Eat to Beat..."This is the ONE!Thanks,David Ricketts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Me: 1; Prostate Cancer: 0
When it comes to eating, I'm about as carnivorous as a T-Rex.However, after hearing about diet being linked to (prostate) cancer and all, I decided to add a healthy component to my diet.Prior to getting this book, I considered holding a pack of tofu or soy milk as severely compromising my masculinity. And I still do. Nonetheless, the benefits that have come from my change in diet are well worth it!I've shed a few pounds and feel great.Ninety-nine percent of the recipes I've tried are easy and delicious.Speaking of easy and delicious, I've impressed a couple of my dates with these recipes.Although I still eat like a T-Rex, from time to time, I feel confident that (prostate) cancer won't make me extinct.Cheers! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best, Supposedly
My husband contracted prostate cancer in 1995, had the "seed" treatment successfully, but it came back in 2003.He seems to have read EVERYTHING, scoured the internet and even talked to physicians across the US, including Dr. Scardino. My husband considers this the best general reference book you will find.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book,Prostate a guide for men, Fred Felkins husband of Joan Felkins
This book was refered to me when I was told that I told that I had Prostate cancer by a doctor. The doctor informed me that most men do not understand what the prostate does and how it operates.I read the book and achieved a better understanding of what I was facing. My wife did not read the entire book but did read certain parts and used this to support me in this time. I would recommend that every man over 50 beg, borrow or buy this book, read it, study it and visit with their doctor and get a yearly check up.I am a five year survial of Prostate cancer and every 6 months when the doctor tells me that it is still in remission I rejoice.

4-0 out of 5 stars A guide for men and the women who love them
This book provided the practical every day treatment information that I needed regarding my recently diagnosed prostrate cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Authoritative Book On Prostate Cancer
Amid all of the rumors and horror stories one confronts after being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, this guide was conforting to both my wife and me. Doctor Walsh and Ms. Worthington are to be commended for preparing a text that a layman can understand and at the same time put to rest the fears stimulated by the horror stories a cancer victim encounters. Especially impressive were the illustrations by Leon Schlossberg. As one who underwent the radical nerve sparing surgery, developed by Dr. Walsh, I knew exactly what would happen and what to expect. I purchase copies of the book and pass it on to men I know who have been diagnosed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Newly Informed Cancer Patient, BUT CAUTION!
I freaked out when I was told by my urologist, just a few months ago, that my biopsy showed prostate cancer and---by the way---would I like to be put on his surgery schedule for next month! This is a fabulous book and one I throughly recommend for the newly diagnosed man who is reeling from the shock of getting this rotten news and not sure what to do.HOWEVER, the book is written by an American surgeon and that means a heavy bias toward treatment for everyone (even low risk cancers) and preferably surgery. It turned out, in my case, that the cancer is less aggressive than my urologist was leading me to believe (get that second opinion!).Monitoring the cancer for changes is a defensible strategy for avoiding the awful side effects of ANY of the treatments for prostate cancer, if your cancer is at a low to medium risk. All that said, this is still a great book and covers most all the bases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Primer on Prostate Cancer
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999.He has had two cryo ablation procedures and yet still has the cancer (confined to the prostate).Having worked for a well-known urologist for many years, I feel Dr. Lange's book is the best literature we have read over the years and has helped answer the many questions we have had in language my husband can understand. Our urologist, however, spends a great deal of time with us explaining everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you (or your partner) needs to know
This book covers prostate cancer from the prospective of a surgeon who treats the disease and who admits that he was terrified when he was diagnosed with it himself. Prostate Cancer for Dummies covers symptoms of prostate cancer and how it's treated (surgery, radiation, etc.) and also covers how to cope with the side effects, such as impotence, depression and so on. The author factors in how cancer affects the whole family and discusses how the person with cancer can help his family help him. The newest studies on cutting edge treatments, foods to eat, how to prevent cancer from coming back and everything you might want to know about prostate cancer is in this book. ... Read more

Collaborative compiled, organized and edited by the team of Doctors David G. Bostwick (Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Virginia); E. David Crawford (Associate Director, University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer City, Aurora, Colorado); Celestia S. This book was loaned to me from the library of Mass General Hospital. It had absolutely no information on any "alternative treatments" or anything other than the standard treatments which are mostly 40 years old and known to fail to cure prostate cancer. Numerous treatments in current literature are not even in the index. This book is at least 30 years out of date and contains no useful suggestion for anyone with a cancer that might have spread.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read and understand
This is an excellent book I have ever read on prostate cancer. Because it is easy to understand. There are some other books on the subject but when you read them it is very difficult to understand. In other words, it is also easy for layman to understand this book. While reading a book if you understand most of what the book says you get pleasure. As is known, medical language is a highly technical language, it is not easy to understand such language. But this book solves the language problems and the reader can easily understand most of the book if he is a careful reader. I would like to thank both the authors and the publisher to publish such a good book to help people like me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Avery good place to start
A diagnosis of prostate cancer is just the first step in a long process, the next step must be educating yourself. The depth of information available can be staggering and often conflicting. Doctors will rarely agree on a definitive course of treatment. Fortunately, for the vast majority of us there is time to educate and reflect on all the options available. This book is a very good place to start the education process and full of references to other sources to completely explore your options

5-0 out of 5 stars PSA Reversed
I had prostate cancer and chose radical prostatectomy for treatment.Prognosis was good eventhough my Gleasons had been 9 & 10. PSA should have remained zero, but began to climb two years after surgery.I studied Dr. Katz book, followed several of his recommendations, and within two months my PSA dropped from 15+ down to 13.7 and hopefully will continue in that direction. The book is very credible. His redcommendations are all backed up with good data and science.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best at all and unnecessarily demoralizing in places
As the wife of a man just diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, I found this book very disturbing because it seems to over-emphasize deaths and tragedies and not survivors in many places. For example, in the section on how prostate cancer impacts spouses and daughters, there were nine women's stories--five of whom had their men die of prostate cancer, two of whom had upsetting stories about advanced prostate cancer, and only two with men who had had locally confined prostate cancer and seemed to do alright.Since 13 percent of all men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and only 2-3 percent of all men die from it, this seemed to be a VERY VERY unbalanced treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars The finest book in its class
The ABCs of Prostate Cancer is simply the finest book in its class. It elegantly and cleanly takes the most difficult concepts and clearly and simply lays them out. The use of graphic is the best I've encountered in apopular medicine book. Dr. Oesterling's devotion to his own father, who hadprostate cancer, is remarkable. This gives any prostate cancer patient asharp and clear edge with the best presentation of the most up to datematerial yet. Nice Job! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a truly biased view
Dr. Dattoli touts brachytherapy above all else, even though studies have shown that surgery offers surer long-term results, important especially for younger men who don't want their cancer to recur down the road.Seed implants can leave areas of the gland undertreated. Also, the idea that radiation causes fewer side effects is bogus. In fact, in addition to urinary and erectile problems, men getting radiation in any form run the risk of bowel problems.

The book suffers from a rhetorical bias against surgery -- a bias that leads to little good being said about surgery.A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that if you see a surgeon about treatment options he/she will likely represent surgery; if you initially see a radiologist, the recommendation is likely to be radiation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A potentially lifesaving book brimming with information
Radiation oncologist Michael J. Dattoli, M.D., Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Cash, and prostate cancer survivor and executive director of the Dattoli Cancer Center and Brachytherapy Institute Donald Kaltenbach present Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery, a potentially lifesaving book brimming with information on the treatment options for those diagnosed with prostate cancer. In addition to possible choices of radiation, radical surgery, or some form of hormonal therapy, Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery offers the latest medical data on state-of-the-art radiation therapy such as seed implants and IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy). From its title, Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery may appear to strongly advocate non-surgical approaches, but in fact the title is simply a reaction against the long-standing favoritism of surgery to the extent of perpetuating myths concerning how effective it truly is. Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery gives an evenhanded assessment of various options, including statistical data with an eye toward possible contradictions or innacuracies hidden within the numbers. The goal is to provide the reader with as much information as possible, in clear, easy-to-understand terms, concerning prostate cancer, how it can be treated, why some men are more or less likely candidates for surgery than others, the risks involved in different types of treatment including risks of temporary or permanent incontience or impotence and how to get help - not only medical help, but also emotional and financial help. A "must-read" for anyone researching or personally grappling with difficult questions and problems concerning prostate cancer, the better to confront one's doctor and discuss options with as much knowledge about the situation as possible. Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why I decided against this book
Background: my PSA has doubled in 6 months, but is still under 4.0.I am putting off a 2nd biopsy until I have given dietary changes a chance to kick in.2-0 out of 5 stars What is left out.
The book opens with information regarding foods to be avoided that feed prostate cancer along with a endorsement by a medical doctor. The book does not define what is "meat" which is a food that the book states should be avoided. It also avoids the categories of seafood and moderate alcohol use such as wine with dinner.I wrote the co-authors requesting a clarification of the above items.Since they refused to answer my inquiry, I consider the book just another vegetarian cookbook with a misleading or incomplete title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hope And A Fun Approach To Food Preparation
It makes sense that a proper diet can have an impact on the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. I have some doubt, however, about the ability of certain foods to destroy prostate cancer cells as claimed on the dust jacket. Fighting prostate cancer is a grim business and this book will help PC survivors and their loving spouses because it provides hope and a fun approach to food preparation. I am presently using the book more for its ideas and inspiration instead oftrying to precisely follow each recipe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide for a Difficult path
I had received an early warning sign. The possibilty existed that I had prostate cancer, a disease that killed my father. In my doctor's office was a book he had written entitled "The Complete Prostate Book". I obtained a copy of the book from Amazon.com so as to study the options available to me. Some months later my cancer was confirmed and I was well prepared to make a decision on my behalf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping others
I read this book to assist a friend that is trying to deal with his ED issues. He is single. I think that this book had addressed issues that are faced by married men as well as single men. I would like to see more books on this topic as it relates to single men because I believe that many single men believe that this limits their ability to have a fulfilling relationship with the opposite sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for any couple
My wife and I are in our 70s with children and grand-children. We have had a very happy marriage, but did not really talk alot about our sex life together. I had surgery 18 months ago for prostate cancer and afterwards experienced impotency. This book was immensely helpful in working through this problem. We read sections together and felt that we could have used it years ago. We have better communication now than we ever did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book as a couple before prostate cancer surgery!
My husband is a physician and I am a marriage and family therapist. This bookcovers, in a reader friendly manner, the proverbial psycho social medical waterfront concerning erectile dysfunction. The most important message is that aboutpenile rehabilitation, ( to be done withdoctor's approval ) to be practiced quite soon after recovery from surgery. Published in 2004, it has all the up to date information on both drug and other therapies. In our opinion, this book should be in the hands of every person considering prostate cancer surgery, so that they will be informed about what they need to do after follow up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject.
This is an excellent book that demonstrates that prostate cancer is mainly a nutritional disease. We in the West have a far higher prostate cancer rate than our Asian counterparts. And, it is due to diet, not ethnicity, or genes. When Asians emigrate to our shores and adopt our Western diet (rich in animal saturated fat), their prostate cancer rates immediately rises up to our levels.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Seriously overpriced book that has little new to offer. It is a good book to the extent that it discusses options other than surgery but the author doesn't really offer much guidance among the various options.5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-Read....A Very Good Source
