5-0 out of 5 stars AbsolutelyInsightful!
Dr. Adler shares her experience with Lymphoma. My husband was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. This book tells current and factual information regarding diagnosis, signs & symptoms, side effects & treatment. When I can understand the diagnosis, I don't fear it. I would highly recommend this to anyone with any type of cancer, especially lymphoma. Judith Hafner

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd read it sooner!
I read this book after I completed my last round of R-CHOP and sure wish I'd read this book before I had started my treatments!Even so, it is full of helpful information. There are lots of technical terms and complete sections that I just couldn't understand, but what I did read was informative. If you're looking for a book that will help you cope with a long term living with Lymphoma, don't buy this book. It's really more for how to cope with the treatments, side effects from the different forms of chemo, what to expect in the future, etc.The author, being a doctor, was certainly not very proactive about her illness until she found out that it was non-hodgkins lymphoma. All of her odd symptoms were misdiagnosed and mis-treated for quite a while before she was finally diagnosed accurately. This in itself is a lesson, but unless you have lymphoma, you wouldn't be reading this book, so it's not very helpful to the lymphoma patient except to show us that those in the medical field aren't perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not the Lymphoma patient, but.....
This book was the best source of information for both my husband and I as we go through treatment. It answered questions and helped formulate others for the Dr. to answer. It is by my bedside everynight. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Chapters varies in quality
A must buy for pathologists interested in hempath... since books in this topics are so scanty.Other well written books (e.g. Contemporary issue series) were outdated.
4-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic and very useful
I find this book with its encyclopedic bend extremely useful on those more difficult or rare cases. This is NOT a replacement for Foucar/Farhi/WHO type books or an atlas. There are very few useful images.....what you get is a much more in depth review of IHC/flow data that can't be found in any other book. There are also great tables.

With this book as a recent purchase I would have to say its one of the best. I diagnosed with LE in the right leg 6 months ago have been trying to find all kinds of info on it to help me understand it more. Also it has helped my family understand what I and the rest of us have to endure. It still makes me mad that we live in a time where Doctors are either not willing to diagnose our conditios correctly or they have no clue about the condition. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Medicine for the Elite
Although the ghost writer of this tale did yeoman's work, I was overwhelmed on every page by what was between the lines: Rick Murdock would have died from this disease had he not been a rich and powerful CEO of a company that specialized in this treatment area. The average person, that is to say all patients who do not fall into the top 10 percent of wage earners in this country, are subjected to health care that has become increasingly rationed. Mr. Murdock ought to thank his lucky stars and donate the proceeds from his (the ghost writer's) book to hospice.

5-0 out of 5 stars dramatic, compelling read...
Overall, PATIENT NUMBER ONE is a compelling, dramatic true story that is fast-paced and socially relevant.Though story's most intense moments are played out over laboratory beakers and in the pages of patent infringement law-it's a fascinating read. The subject matter is on par with films like THE INSIDER, bringing to light some very ugly but very timely truths about big business and our legal system.5-0 out of 5 stars Ray of Hope
I have a Friend who just went through this process at John Hopkins. The results at this time are excellent and the procedures are almost exactly what the Author went through. I would recommend this book as a tool for all Patients that are diagnosed with this form of Cancer as a Ray of Hope for their peace of mind. The only downside is the exposing of how our Judicial System treats the Treatment of a serious illness as another point of Law. They should be ashamed and the Judge should be also for overturning a Jury verdict. They wonder why people have no respect for the Law and Jury Trials. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For The Newly Diagnosed
When I was diagnosed with NH Lymphoma in October 2005, I promptly bought this book. What a lifesaver! This book covers everything a newly diagnosed patient could want. From initial diagnosis, this book takes the patient through all of the different kinds of Non Hodgkins Lymphomas. It tells the patient in detail the kinds of tests that your doctor will most likely order and even give you information on how painful the tests will be. Then it goes into detail on all of the different types of chemotherapy you might undergo as well as radiation therapy, surgeries and biopsies. It takes a tremendous amount of the fear away that a patient has. When I started chemotherapy, the book was right there at my side answering every question that I had. If I had a strange reaction, I reached for the book and sure enough, there was an explanation.
5-0 out of 5 stars For every NHL Patient and Caregiver
This book can be recommended to anyone whose life has been changed forever by a diagnosis of NHL. If one is filled with trepidation, not wanting to read the cold, hard facts, he/she can be reassured that reading thisparticular book will only help one understand and cope with the disease, not scare them to death. 5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
This is a wonderful, must-have book for any NHL patient. It reads like almost like novel, giving accurate, easy to understand information.I especially like the quotes and antecdotes from the patients themselves;people who have been through it, who "get it"...in their ownwords.A fantastic resource. ... Editorial Review

Singer and Grismaijer have collected striking (but preliminary) evidence that bra-wearing may be a major risk factor associated with breast cancer: women who wear tight-fitting bras 24 hours a day are 125times more likely to have breast cancer than women who do not wear bras at all. Their interpretation is that tight clothing inhibits the proper functioning of the lymphatic system (an internal network of vessels andnodes that flushes wastes from the body) and leads to a buildup of carcinogenic compounds in the constricted areas. 4-0 out of 5 stars An important book
I have been working as a physician, combining acupuncture and ostepathic manipulation for many years. Stagnation is a major cause of disease in many areas of health and breast health is no exception. There is a strong negative correlation between bra wearing and breast health. Certainly in some social situations, modesty dictates that a bra be worn at certain times. But going braless when possible contributes to both breast health and firmness.5-0 out of 5 stars An argument for natural common sense
This book was both informative and affirming...and a reminder of the endless ways our societal values control women's bodies. It made me recall back to my teen years when my mother and I had an ongoing battle about my refusal to wear a bra. My mom saw in my actions rebelliousness and promiscuity. My real reasons? What a ridiculous thing to do to my body! How uncomfortable and unatural! I hated the way people would stare at my braless chest, but hated the loathsome binding feeling even more. This book is yet another argument for listening to our intuition and natural common (as opposed to culturally conditioned) sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars AN EMOTIONAL ISSUE, BUT LISTEN UP - THEY'RE RIGHT!
It's obvious from the reviews here that this book brings out strong emotion in readers. They either see it as a life saver or are furious at the authors for suggesting a connection between wearing a bra and getting breast cancer. While I agree with the people who say the book makes sense, I'd also like to add that for me it was great to see something posItive in print about going braless. Personally, I have always hated wearing a bra and the first thing I do when I get home from work is to take off my bra. On days when I am home all day, I don't wear one. I put one on when I'm wearing clothes that would make it too obvious that there was no bra underneath if I didn't wear one, but I also heavily avoid such clothing. I do not do this because I'm trying to avoid cancer, but because bras are uncomfortable and (in my estimation) they serve no purpose.Read more

My wife and I found lots of great help in this book.Detailed enough for our academic minds.Honest enough to be helpful in a difficult time. And staightforward enough to be understandable. We showed it to our therapist who liked it enough to include it in her list of resources for others with lymphedema. We highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Help
I found this book very informative and comforting. It not only tells about lymphedema, about why it starts and what can be done about it, but the book has the stories of other women with lymphedema and shows what they are doing for their condition. It helped make me aware that I am not the only person to have had problems after I was treated for breast cancer.Since my therapy for lymphedema I have used this book to maintain my arm's shape. I think the book is a wonderful guide. It was a real relief for me to find this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Impressions
Having had lymphoma for five years now, I was eager to read Ruzic's book. I learned quite a bit -- or at least terms to use in my never-ending research into indolent lymphoma.Four years ago, I had been so sick that I could hardly walk across a room; I coughed incessantly, and if I ate anything, it came up the next time I coughed. I had just about every test anyone could imagine, but the malignancy never surfaced as the cause for my horrible night sweats, constant weight loss, endless coughing. My doctor thought I had lymphoma, but even after two weeks in the hospital, no one could find anything to blame the symptoms on.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good points, but the end result, bad news
I read the book, then found out that the author died after writing it - how saddening that was. Yes, I have to give credit where credit is due - a lot of good points were brought out, but I've since found other books on healing methods that aren't damaging to the body that are more current with better info and the authors are alive and well after using their own advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Ruzic died
Mr. Ruzic died in late January 2004.His illness returned and claimed his life a few months after the book published.Nevertheless, his efforts and spirit as described in this book are heroic, and our medical practitioners have a lot to learn about how to train people and think objectively. ... The words she writes of her cancer experience are from inside her soul, they are real. She dares to speak of her fear. You can hear her fear and her courage to fight fear. She insists on explaining this life changing event. She describes cancer's potential and how paraylzing an experience can be. I myself am a (2) time Hodgkins Disease survivor. I can relate to Lisa in many, many ways. The title, "Only When I Sleep," says it all. I strongly encourage anyone to read this book to hear words of a cancer experience and the meaning of a cancer survivor. Those who have experienced cancer and read this book will applaud Lisa for her strength to overcome adversity and commend her for not letting her experience go unnoticed. That yes, Cancer is life changing, it will try to take you down, but for many not without a fight. With a loving support system, you can overcome.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!!!
This is a wonderful book. It will make you cry, but will also bring joy to your heart and a smile to your face. It makes you realize the "choices" Lisa and her family had to make to survive where very hard for her and her family. You will admire her strength, courage, and her determination to beat this. You see first hand how it effects everyone in her family. How the love of her husband, parents, family members and friends are unconditional. It shows us how the small things we all take for granted can be taken away from us in seconds and our world can be turned upside down. How Lisa never gave up and if you "believe" anything is possible.5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Light Yet Meaningful
I read this book a few days after my doctor told me he was "very concerned" I may have a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.I found the easy style of the book was something I definitely needed while my mind was racing in a million directions.I loved that I could identify with the author on silly things like what to wear to my next doctor's appointment. The lightness yet meaningful style of the book helps in a time when so much is going on around you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book because it is realistic about cancer.
Marvyl Loree Patton is to be commended for writing an intense personal experience story that includes guide-lines for helping others.I found her story very touching.I'd recommend it to not only people suffering from cancer but to anyone who has to see someone suffer with this disease.Having a friend who died from breast cancer several years ago, I find myself going back to Patton's book to gain a better understanding of this terrible disease and for coping mechanisms on how I can get on with my life and not be trapped in my grief. Patton left a great contribution to the world when she wrote her story. We need more books like it--personal experience stories that includes guidelines for Christian living no matter what our circumstances may be.This book would make a nice gift or a special asset in a library--church or public libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent
There are so many books published about what cancer is but very few about how it really affects a family.Marvyl's way of telling about her experience is exceptional. The day to day ways she and her family coped with her illness was remarkable. I could compare this book to "First You Cry" by Betty Rollins but Marvyl's is so much better.I wish I had this book when my own family was coping with my aunt's cancer. This is a book I will pass on to my family members so they may all learn about Marvyl's love, compassion, and fortitude in the eyes of death. Marvyl wrote about her life threatening complications of cancer in a manner which makes it an enjoyable read. Her personal thoughts and feelings are shared throughout the 236 pages. When most of us would falter and turn away from God, Marvyl shows how she became stronger and more in tune with her religion, her family, and herself. Marvyl helped start "I Can Cope" groups, as well as hospice services, especially in Minnesota. This amazing woman continues to speak out about her illness wherever and whenever she is requested. I thoroughly agree with Minneapolis oncologist Barbara J Bowers, MD when she said, "All cancer patients should have the opportunity to see cancer through Marvyl's eyes.""Guide-Lines and God-Lines for Facing Cancer" was also reviewed by Midwest Book Review. This book is a must read for all cancer patients, their families, support groups, hospice centers, and libraries. ... Read more
