5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the c-note
The illustrations alone make this a worthwhile buy, whether you're a gastroenterologist or just extremely interested in colonoscopies.Ever since Katie Couric's live colonoscopy on TODAY, I've been intrigued by the procedure, considering it something of an art form as well as an intrusive medical procedure. But Abraham Dachman and his team of writers make a compelling argument for the use of Virtual Colonoscopy in lieu of long tubes, nano-cameras, and liquid barium. It's a brave new world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real eye-opener
Excellent book that really opens eyes on how deceptive are common beliefs about what is "healthy" food, followed by millions of people. Hopefully, the author will not stop at the fiber!

2-0 out of 5 stars BORING
All I can say is insufferable details that go on and on, are boring or make you sick, I believe I skipped over more than I read.A vast array of small insignificant details leaked together make up most of this story.I believe this would have been a much better story without a lot of the detail.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings--interesting premise, bland characters
I wanted to like this book much more than I ultimately did. The story had an interesting, engaging premise, but didn't really deliver. We're given only glimpses of other characters and they lack any real depth. The main character is not well-developed. His profession as a surgeon--spurred apparently by one war-time incident--seems like a tired cliched plot device in what otherwise could be a much more complex novel. And even though we're told he's a surgeon he just could easily have been a civil engineer for all the difference it really makes in the novel. It also stretched credibility that someone with this advanced form of colon cancer was able to keep his condition hidden from loved ones and perform some pretty arduous hiking.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Silly than Profound
I'll leave a summary of this book to others who have pointed out many of it's weaknesses, which I'll also pass over. There were two things that particularly made this a tedious read, though. First, the author's constant use of ten dollar words. Why say "sun burned" when you can say "sun burnished"? How many times do you really need to use the word "nimbus" in a 300 page book? I had the feeling the author had his thesaurus at his elbow and used it constantly. Secondly, the author has a tin ear for dialogue. Instead of sounding like a real teenager or drifter, the author's characters sound like a 45-year-old West Coast liberal's idea of how a teenager or drifter is supposed to sound. I realize the characters Ben meets on the road are more symbolic than literal, but they just never rang true. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Dr Pochapin!!!!!
I cannot fully express my gratitude to Dr Pochapin for creating this sanity-preserving resource! In the course of my diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and follow-up tests, I was at times lost. This book helped me to hang on, to understand, to feel prepared for all that was happening to me. Cancer is really scary when it has your name on it. Dr Pochapin has a way of relieving some of its "sting" with his way of talking to you like an old friend. I am a survivor for 20 months now and there are still things I refer to in this valuable book!Thank you again Dr Pochapin!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorectal Cancer by Pochapin
This book is a solid investment in methodologies to detect, treat
5-0 out of 5 stars Be proactive and avoid this cancer
As a two time survivor of colorectal cancer I think this the best book I've read on how to avoid this cancer, what to do if diagnosed with it and how to cope with it. If I knew then what I know now I would have been proactive in getting physical exams with the screening tests described and certainly a colonoscopy at 50 years of age. Sooner if certain symptoms or hereditary factors were present.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Life for You, Your Family and Your Loved Ones
Why Die of Colon Cancer? by Francis G. Mackey, M. D., describes, in laymen's' terms, how one can virtually "immunize" oneself and one's loved ones against colon cancer, the second-largest form of cancer-killer that claims 60,000 lives a year. As such, this book is literally a "gift of life." The key: getting a colonoscopy, a painless procedure, every 7 to 10 years (upon reaching 35 if there's a history of colon cancer in one's family, or other risk factors; or, starting at age 40-50 if not). 5-0 out of 5 stars A Physician's Gift
About the Author:There is a fairly long history of Dr. Mackey's life and career already on this site.My own knowledge of Francis Mackey is more personal. He is a resident of the same retirement community in which my mother lives.I met Dr. Mackey at the retirement community.I know him as an extraordinarily caring and compassionate physician. Although retired, Francis is always available to offer his caring support to all. This book arose out of Dr. Mackey's own battles with colon cancer and is his gift to all of us - women and men who have been diagnosed with colon cancer, their wives, children, and friends.5-0 out of 5 stars Save your life - Prevent the preventable
Dr. Mackey offers a wealth of practical, informed, and first-hand advice on how to avoid a basically avoidable disease - colon cancer. From his own experiences and medical knowledge, he talks sensitively, but persuasively about the power each of us has to take charge of our lives. If nothing else, I learned two things: One, that a colonoscopy is far more preferable in the proper course of prevention ofcolon cancer than a Sigmoid by itself (or even in combination with anything else). And two, in today's time-pressed and dollars-pressed medical environment, it is extremely important for each of us to ask questions of our medical professionals and to learn as much as possible about the diseases they diagnose in us and the efficacy of the various options that exist to combat them. But most importantly, the best way to combat cancer or most any other disease is education, communication, and prevention. ... Editorial Review

To an outsider, Buddhist meditation can appear self-indulgent, timefrittered away buttressing an intransigent ego. To an insider, such as SandyBoucher, the dividends of meditation can come at unforeseen times, under extremecircumstances, such as facing down malignant cancer. Boucher, a counterculturepatchwork of pursuits and causes, sews together a memoir of suffering to rivalany proof of the Buddha's first noble truth. Although her surgery is a success, like so many other cancer victims Boucher's battle with chemotherapy causes themost damage. Having lost her home, her lover, and her health, Boucher collapsesinto the spiritual arms of her longtime meditation teacher Ruth Denison.Parallel to the drama of the cancer, we are treated to a minibiography ofDenison, who proves to be an oasis of sanity in the desert of Boucher's life.Honest, occasionally compelling, and often unusual, Boucher's story containsglimmers of Buddhism's light amid many shadows of human frailty. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too negative
Eliza certainly went through tough times through her illness both because of the US centric healthcare system, the less than first class medical professionals, as well as the treatments itself. Would not recommend this book for anyone actually having Colon Cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights on what to expect and how to handle it are well done and very specific
Colon cancer doesn't receive the publicity devoted to other types of cancer, yet it's the third most common malignancy in the world and the second leading cause of death from cancer, aside from lung cancer. Living With Colon Cancer: Beating The Odds tells of the author's own battle against colon cancer, her survival after a terrible diagnosis, and how to cope with treatment and emotional highs and lows. Insights on what to expect and how to handle it are well done and very specific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be considered "must" reading for anyone having to deal with this disease
Colorectal cancers develop slowly in the lower portions of the digestive tract. More than 140,000 new cases are diagnosed annual in the United States. Men and Women are equally at risk for the diseases. Positive Options For Colorectal Cancer: Self-Help And Treatment by colorectal cancer survivor Carol Ann Larson accessibly and understandably explains just how to cope with the disease and obtain the best treatments that modern medicine has to offer. Positive Options For Colorectal Cancer addresses the warning signs of the condition; screening tests (including information on virtual colonoscopy); myths and other misinformation about the disease; treatment options (including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation); communicating with doctors and other medical professionals; prevention techniques and alternative methods of healing; as well as finding support and utilizing all available resources. Of special note are the Q&As in which doctors respond to the most common questions of colorectal cancer patients. Very strongly recommended for personal and community library reference collections, Positive Options For Colorectal Cancer should be considered "must" reading for anyone having to deal with this disease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Options for Colorectal Cancer:
I have been in the health care field for twenty-five years, and I have never read a more readable book about one of the most important health issues of the day, colorectal cancer, and the vital importance of the early detection of it.This is a must-have for anyone in the field, containing actual case histories of countless people.
5-0 out of 5 stars There are options when you feel you have no control
Carol Larson's book is an excellent guidebook for a patient facing colorectal cancer.Instead of feeling helpless and awash in a sea of uncertainty when dealing with colorectal cancer, the book clearly guides the patient to identify the positive options available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but could use improvement
This book is easy to read. The author describes the various stages of digestion, the role that friendly bacteria plays in digestion, and discusses probiotic treatment options for various illnesses. However, there is a chapter that recommends how to buy probiotics.I realized that it only leads to one brand of friendly bacteria, which happens to endorse the book. Most of the other probiotic brands are ruled out through various comments.I made the mistake and bought the recommended strand, thinking they were the best and there were no other options available.Be aware that other stuff is out there, and the information in the book doesn't give an objective picture of what to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Perfect! Just what I was looking for. Lots of information in a small easy to read pamphlet. Good starting point for more in depth research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thorough, understandable
Needing to do some research on the subject of DHA, I selected this book without any expectations. However, I was very pleased by the author's apparent knowledge of the subject matter, and her ability to explain fairlycomplicated concepts without being tedious or condescending. DHA as anutritional supplement isn't all that well-known as yet, but I feel sure itwill become a household word in the near future. As that time approaches, and people want to learn more on the subject, this author should prove tobe an excellent resource. I have read this book pretty carefully andthoroughly, and have learned a lot from it.I will be buying more of herbooks on other subjects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference
Within a week of my diagnosis of colon cancer, I had this book, along with "What to Do If You Get Colon Cancer" by Paul Miskovitz and Marian Betancourt, in hand. Together they provided critical information on the illness, on finding a surgeon and what questions to ask about treatment. While recovering from surgery, and now in the early stages of chemotherapy, I have kept these books by my side to guide me step-by-step. Information is presented clearly and compassionately, so that I know what might be expected as I progress through treatment. Without these guides, I would be muddling through instead of being able to take charge of my illness. They are invaluable!

5-0 out of 5 stars very highly recommended for patient and spouse
I was recently diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer stage 3 and looked for a single specific reference. I thought this book was excellent. I am a medical doctor with a specific background in critically assessing medical evidence but learned of a lot of resources I had not been aware of, including cancer question list servers etc. I would buy it as early on in your treatment as possible -, things like choice of treatment center, surgeon, pre vs post surgery radiation are all things to try to become knowledgeable about as early on as possible.I think the tone of the book is exactly right, combining technical and lots of humane/quality of life advice (including how to talk with friends and younger family members) . My spouse who is a teacher but has no clinical background has also found the book excellent in answering her questions. I feel Lorraine Johnston has performed a real public service.Good luck to any patients and family, this book will definitely help you give quality survival its best chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book
"That was terrific!" While not what you would expect to hear after a colonoscopy, these were the first words out of my husband's mouth as he woke up from this somewhat inconvenient procedure a few weeks ago, which he and I had postponed as long as possible. Howls of laughter burst forth from the nurses and others present in the recovery room. Nonetheless, the words revealed my husband's shock and delight that the dreaded procedure began and ended so imperceptibly and so painlessly.5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding of Colon Cancer in Plain English
Richard Adrouny, MD is a personal friend of mine but I am not a patient of his nor aphysician nor do I have any medical training. However, I am approaching 60. I do get annual checkups and prostate exams and I do worry about cancer.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide for Those of Us Who Are Not Physicians
