5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary and Informative Guide on Chilldhood leukemia
As a grandparent of a recently diagnosed 3 year old with ALL leukemia I have found this book an important resource for me to understand the treatment for this terrible disease. The descriptions of the types of chemo used and its side-effects have been particulalry valuable during the early months since the diagnosis. The book is comprehensive with all aspects of the disease and is full of anecdotal and suggestions for coping with this disease at all phases of treatment. It also offers lists of available resources to be accessed.I highly recommend this book for parents, family members and caregivers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish this book was available 23 years ago!
I have been a survivor of ALL Leukemia for 23 years now, and really wish there were books like this then. But now is when all these books are coming out, I am trying to find a book or information on how long term survivors can cope with the long term issues we face.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is the Bible of Childhood Leukemia!
When my son was diagnosed in July 2002 with ALL, I didn't even know what Leukemia was.I ordered this book from Amazon right away.Over a year later, I found myself still looking to this book for reference. After the doctors explain something to me I come home and look it up in this book and understand even better exactly what's going on with my son.If you know anyone with leukemia get a copy for yourself and for the parents of that child.(I have never written a review for a book before but felt compelled to tell people how helpful this book has been to me.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I highly recommend this book for any family going thru Leukemia. When my friends little boy was diagnosed 1 week ago with leukemia, I set out immediatley to find a book written for children that would explain to this little boy what was happening to him. I found and read a few good books on this topic, but this one is by far the best one I found. It is very thorough, but explained well. Every family going thru Leukemia, should have this book. It was also helpful for my own children so that they too could understand what is happening to their friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars an outstanding introduction to leukemia for all ages
Recently,my six year old daughterwas diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Her doctor immediately gave us a copy of You and Leukemia. As a beginning reference, the book helped to explain the terms, challenges and struggle we were about to face.I have purchased copies for all of the family members so that everyone can begin to understand leukemia. Writing in a thorough but simple manner, Baker has produced an important resources for patients and their relatives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous depth of sharing...deeply moving
"The Healing Room" is a very unique and personal view into the journey taken by its author Dori Bohntinsky, during her experience with the death of her daughter and others over an 18 month period.Reading this book I felt I was being let into a very special place where there was a detailed record of sadness and joys, of loss and of growth. It has touched me in many ways.Through all of this, Dori shows how the power of spirit is somehow magnified and focused through the journal writing process, and as a reader, you can share each step along the way.The book is powerful and intense, not something you can read in a day or two.Its chapters often give rise to many feelings that need their own time and space to surface and integrate.I found much of value here and know that you will too.Her framing of addictive behavior as any behavior that takes us away from feeling our true feelings is a very powerful statement for our times. Not long ago, I lost two loved ones in one year, and I know the shift in one's energy and life outlook this can cause. If you have experienced a loss of any kind, read this book and re-experience your journey and your feelings in a new light, through the beautiful messages that Dori shares with us all.Thank you Dori. --- Mark Greenia, author of "Energy Dynamics: Conscious Human Evolution."

5-0 out of 5 stars a truthful account of spiritual healing through grief
i read The Healing Room cover to cover in one sitting. i couldn't put it down as the author's voice came through so clearly to me in speaking the truth about loss, grief and healing. the book is a journal of spiritual healing- written in the first person and on a consistent basis during the time of the author's last four months with her daughter. The presence of mind and nuggets of joy that the author and her husband were able to pull out of their daily struggles with their daughter's illness and their own grief gifted me with the knowledge that, even during my own very darkest hours, the universe is open to helping me cope, understand and heal. reading her book was a blessing for my spirit and i highly recommend it for anyone 5-0 out of 5 stars The Healing Room was aptly named
The Healing Room was aptly named.I have gone through the grieving process, but did not really understand the emotions that I felt.I found this book to be extremely helpful in identifying my feelings.Even though I knew how it would end, I couldn't put the book down. This book is not complicated to read, and can be finished in one sitting. However, there is much to digest and I will want to open the book again and again. The Healing Room will be helpful for anyone who is experiencing, or has experienced, grief from any type of loss.I highly recommended it ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Historical view pointbut cyto toxins are devistating & experimental.
As a mother of 3, one of which has ALL Acute Lymphoblastic leukaemia, and a researcher, I want parents to know that there is more out there than this author offers. The tragedy is a moral one, while they have been using our children as guinee pigs for 30 years they have also shut out all other promising research of less harmful treatments that have shown good results.Only "inefficent" cyto toxins have been promoted and invested in.Fishbowl mentality not serving humanity but serving Big Pharma profits. My 3yr old has nearly died from cyto toxic chemo and this treatment predisposes patients to multiple other cancers in future.Cyto-toxins may be an appropriate first aid but as a prolonged treatment they are harmful in hidden and devistating ways.Hippocrates said "first thout should do no harm", perhaps looking outside the square as they did to find quantum physics, would be more successful and less devistating to families. We have lost everything due to the treatment alone.Alternatives provide more promise and better results but people are frightened and guilted into taking chemo, by MDs,when there are more efficent treatments for the long term with less harmful side effects.THis publication is good for the historical point, showing the investment since the great wars in cyto-toxins.But many competing and more successful treatments have been suppressed due to this treatment.Interestingly chemo has extreemly poor results with any other cancer and yet it is used universally in all cancers. Not exactly commonsense. Multinationals suppress our technology to enable continued profit from fossil fuels and the same authorities suppress competing research in this industry because they don't want to lose market share or admitt the limitations of the cyto-toxic industry.Parents are not given choice in this treatment and the population based statistics used do not cater for individual needs. It has supprised me how little medical professionals know about cutting edge research and how quickly new breakthroughs get lost or dissapear.MD's are only as good as the information provided to them and can the source of information be trusted given the cold war approach to cyto-toxic alternatives. The fishy smell is the economics.Ignorance and economics are putting our children at risk in prevention and cure.A Fact.Cyto-toxins cannot proport to be a cure or miracle, too many children have died from cyto toxic effects and experimentation that continues today. THe crime is in not looking beyond the first aid approach, beyond cyto-toxins, to focus on harm minimisation and treatments that are more efficient than current drugs.THis book is written by someone that is entrenched in the fishbowl mentality and has only painted part of the historical picture.Again he is only as good as the information provided to him.I am a researcher, I know what I am speaking of.Bring parents choice and harm minimisation or get off the podium. It took Medical professionals 200 years before they allowed Vitamin c to become a mainstream treatment of scurvey, shunning the proporter as a quack.OUr children are still dying from ignorance in 2005.

4-0 out of 5 stars Miracles and Medicine: One Parent's Introduction to Leukemia
I came across this book while sitting in my daughter's hospital room still inundated with the news that she had childhhod leukemia. It was there amid the pamphlets and literature that symbolized the "dump" our lives had just taken.4-0 out of 5 stars History of treatment for childhood leukemia
Childhood leukemia survival rates have increased dramatically in the last 20 years and this book gives historical perspective of significant treatment breakthroughs and scientific developments through the stories of several doctors and researchers.Excellent reference book for students and researchers, less applicable for medical consumers who may find current treatment-oriented books more useful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cranes For World Peace
I recommend this book to teachers, librarians and students everywhere.I first read about Sadako Sasaki in the fabulous book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr.I am a children and teenlibrarian and was moved by this young girl's courage and wish for worldpeace. I wanted to share this story with my "Teen Coffeehouse"group which meets on a regular basis. They too were touched by Sadako'sstory. We have gotten involved with the folding of 1,000 origami papercranes and will be sending them to an elementary teacher in Hiroshima.Hewill be placing our 1,000 cranes under the Sadako Statue in the HiroshimaPeace Memorial Park on August 6, 2000.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling and needed story
This is a well-written, moving narrative about one family's struggle with childhood cancer. The negative review for this book is puzzling, if not simply a plug for another book. It criticizes this one for not covering medical protocols in sufficient depth, which is unfair because the author does not purport to do that. I agree with the previous reviewer. A focus on medical details misses the forest for the trees. Protocols change, and are mostly the province of doctors. Which is not to say one shouldn't pay attention to the medicine and become reasonably educated on treatment options. But understanding the course of treatment is just one aspect of the ordeal, and not the most important when you consider the human beings involved. Hope, attitude, living and enjoying life; such choices are absolutely within the families' control, and they can make all the difference. Conveying that is the purpose of this gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise and warm guide
Cynthia Krumme's book was not meant as a guide for parents about what kind of treatment to expect. Of course the description of treatment is out of date, but the treatment varies from year to year and from country to country anyway. Krumme wrote about how to cope with a very ill child, how to treat his or her siblings, how to enjoy life in spite of everything awful that was happening, and how to let the child enjoy it. And all this is timeless. It is best to get a description of treatment from the doctor who is dealing with the child and to read as much as possible about how other people coped with similar situation. And Cynthia Krumme is a very wise, warm guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt saga, but dated from a medical standpoint.
As the mother of a daughter with leukemia, I found this a moving tale of one family's struggle with leukemia, but for those whose children have been recently diagnosed (1998-99), keep in mind that the author describesmedical protocols, procedures, even family activities that are out-of-datewith current philosophy. Many of the family's experiences are no longercommon or allowed by responsible pediatric oncologists. For this reason, the book may be misleading and inaccurate to some families. A much betterguide to leukemia is Nancy Keene's book, "Childhood Leukemia." ... Read more

I read this book in 1 day because I could not put it down! From the 1st sentence, the author captivated me and made me feel part of his family through the end.The story is heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time.It is extremely well-written and shows the family with all of their flaws as well as their great strengths.I could not stop crying while reading this book and recommend it as long as you are prepared to leave a piece of your heart with the author and his family.
