Cartoonist Marisa Acocella Marchetto's graphic memoir about her battle with breast cancer is as bold, vibrant, and brave as she is--pumped full of color, the story leaps off the page and into your heart. 5-0 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer D Day September 6, 2006
Received book from long time twisted sister friend the day I was on my way to try and have this blasted arm pit drain removed. Age 53, tumor found on routine yearly mammogram (1 year 3 days since last) Tumor 1.1 centimeters, well differentiated, Positive Receptors both E & P, ask oncologist surgeon if he was piercing my nipple on the 4th plunged on the core biopsy. Afterwards, ask for a smilie face sticker, surgeon said he should have ones instead of saying "I gave Blood" say "I GAVE BOOB" I work for a printing company and designed a sticker, button & T-shirt.Something that existentially speaks more than a pink ribbon; I gave "flesh & blood."After initial surgery of tumor Segmental Mastectomy with Sentinel Node Biopsy, remove 4 lymph nodes, One was with cancer.Had to go back for the Wad of fat to be removed with additional 15 lymph nodes FULL AXILLARY DISSECTION... all of those were clear.YEA!As I await the next stages in this New World I found "Cancer Vixen" to be vastly informative and will require all of my supportive Nipple Pulling friends to read it.Thank you for sharing your emotional roller coaster ride through the horrid disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grazie Marisa
As touching as true stories can be andas funny as goods novels (or comic books!) can be....the secret of Mrs. Marchetto is to mix REAL life and its tragic aspects with unforgettable and unique humour ... the best book and the best author ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Shelley Christy (real name), Pittsburgh, PA
I read about "Nordie's at Noon" from my weekly PEOPLE magazine subscription.I actually bought the book on vacation and could not put it down--it is a quick read, but so very powerful and inspiring.I admire these four ladies' courage and their stance not to be victims. They are true survivors and are an inspiration to anyone faced with any type of illness.I passed the book along to a friend who has breast cancer as well. When you read the book, you definitely feel like you know the four authors.I recommend this book to ALL woman!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for all women
I read the review of this book in People magazine, and was interested enough to buy it the next day.I was not disappointed-- this a wonderful book. Not only was it an interesting and well written chronicle of 4 women's fight with breast cancer, but it was educational as well. Reading first hand accounts of how breast cancer changed the lives of young women made I could relate to made me realize it's high time I knew what a BSE (Breast Self-Examination) was!

5-0 out of 5 stars Live, Love, Laugh, Learn
This book is an amazing story about the four women authors on their journey with breast cancer, God, family, and friends.I feel so much more enlightened and comfortable with the topic of breast cancer; I've grown tremendously from my experience reading the book. One of the mantra's for one of the authors is Live, Love, Laugh. My mantra has always been Live, Love, Laugh, Learn.I Learned a great deal from this book and believe it will help others Learn about friendship and one very important part of life no one can escape.Of course, there is a huge emphasis in the book on Living, Loving and Laughing.I gave a copy of this book to approximately 100 friends across the nation.I hope this story will help many people Learn more about their family and friends who are, or who will inevitably, Live, Love, and Laugh their way through breast cancer. My Live, Love, Laugh, Learn Campaign - "PASS IT ON!" I ask that anyone who reads this review to read this book. Then purchase several copies for others. Many people will better understand this life experience. If everyone simply buys two books and asks the people with whom they share the book to "pass it on," the number of people we can reach is incredible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is This a Book?
Is this a book to help out women who suffer from being misinformed about menopause or an advertisement for progesterone cream?Didn't help me at all, if anyone wants to buy it, it's yours but I don't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener Sans The Wool
Back-to-back, I've read this book and the other one by Dr. John Lee, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre Menopause: Balance Your Hormones And Your Life From Thirty To Fifty."Although the one just mentioned is more pertinent to my age group, and both books cover much of the same ground, I chose to review this book because it seems to be more in-depth.Both books, however, are laden with valuable information for women of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005
Excellent book, covering all aspects of breast cancer. Dr. Love is considered the top authority on breast cancer. Her style of writing is interesting as well as informative. It is as if she is talking personally to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book
This book has been a lifesaver for me.I had breast cancer a year ago and if I had a question, I knew I could turn to the index and find the page that would have my answers. It put me at ease most of the time through a very scary experience.I have bought this book for a friend who just found out that she has breast cancer. She, too, have enjoyed the peace this book gives. It is very informative and interesting.I recommend this book to every lady who is told that she has, the scary words, "breast cancer".

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information
I bought this book for a relative who had breast cancer. This book helped her refine her questions about treatment as she met with physicians. It also gave her a much needed information about breast cancer. It was especially helpful in being very clear about what was known for sure about the disease and treatment and what was still unclear.I consider this book a must for anyone with breast cancer or with a family member or friend with breast cancer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another WHO book
World Health Organization: Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs (edited by Fattaneh A. Tavassoli and Peter Devilee) is the 4th in the Pathology and Genetics of Tumours series from the WHO. With an impressive set of multidisciplinary contributors from several continents, this book improves on previous books from that organization by representing a reasonable attempt towards consensus in their presentation of the various topics. The main strength of this book, as with others in the series, is that they are concise and emphasize the most salient points in each topic. While it is not meant to be an encyclopedic account of the various tumors, essential definitions, clinical findings, morphologic points, immunophenotypic variations and molecular and/or cytogenetic pathogenesis are well presented. This book does not resolve some of the more controversial issues in these fields (such as the prognostic significance of micropapillary patterns in ovarian serous borderline tumors or terminologic issues in intraductal breast proliferations), but at least provides another framework for further discussion. The illustrations are excellent and the text is well-supplemented with tables. Overall, I would recommend this book to trainees and practitioners alike ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!
I purchased this review book and studied it along with the ACR. Most of the information in the book was on the registry except it lacked pathology and there were a few errors when you took the practice tests in the book. You really had to make sure you reviewed the answers.I got a 90 a my mammo registry!! I highly recommend this book!! I was a self study and was not able to attend any conferences so my information came from this book and the ACR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
I used this study guide and found the questions and the style of questions very helpful for the ARRT Exam.I used this Appleton and Lange Study guide along with a guide from an initial mammography training conference and had no trouble passing the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good format, watch the answers carefully.
Overall, the review questions were helpful, but there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the mistakes seemed to be poor proof reading, but many other questions/answers seem to directly contradict the text in the same book. That can be very confusing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives.
Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."
4-0 out of 5 stars Selenium helps fight breast cancer and other cancers as well
The nutrient, selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to be effective in fighting breast cancer. Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet containing 200 microgram (mcg) of selenium for seven years had only half the death rate from cancer as a similarly large group of people who received yeast tablets containing no selenium. The reduction in death rate was higher for breast cancer than for certain other forms of cancer. The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Editorial Review

"Breast cancer is never completely over," says author Marisa C. Weiss, M.D., a radiation oncologist. Even when x-rays are negative and doctors proclaim remission, breast-cancer survivors often suffer from continued health problems along with elevated levels of anxiety, and the specter of recurrence is just a small part of the picture.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated
There's a lot of good information in this book...for 1998.Breast cancer treatment and survival has come a long way since then; this book should reflect that. Also, was surprised at how much stuff they covered that *wasn't* post-treatment.A lot of what this book covered was in other books for the newly diagnosed and those going through treatment -- I wanted more about actual life after treatment, not more recaps of breast reconstruction.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best for Metastatic Information!
I've been reading and researching breast cancer on and off for 4 years.A year ago my breast cancer metasticized, and it's hard to find honest information (or any information) about metastatic disease. The title to this book is misleading, because it doesn't mention the fantastic, updated metastatic information. It is by far the most comprehensive, readable treatment of this I've found.I'm ordering several copies to give away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comforting guide in the privacy of your home!
My daughter was sitting with my husband and myself in the office of myradiation oncologist. She spotted "Living Beyond Breast Cancer"on the bookshelf. She like myself was so lost when we found I had breastcancer.Neither my husband, daughter or myself knew what was going tohappen. She began reading the book and could not put it down. When theDr. came into the room he made comment about the book she was reading.Shewas so elated with all the facts, which are printed in such simple languagethat we could understand. The Dr. saw her enthusiasm and offered for herto take it home.Since that time I have not been able to seperate myselffrom this book.As I progress thru my mastectomy, I find new items ofinterest. It also helped me understand what my partner, my husband, wasfeeling.I read one of the chapters to him, at our breakfast table.Wesat and cried and agreed that the way he was feeling was as written in thebook.I never realized just how much he hurt and how comforting it was tohim to know there was a book written that could tell me how he felt.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An important word on the "American Council for Science and Health"
I have not read Arnot's book. However, to those reviewers who cite the attacks made against the book by the American Council for Science and Health, you need to know the shaky credentials and corporate sponsorship of that particular organization.Go to their website: there you will find articles saying that pesticide in foods poses absolutely no health risks, and articles saying that vending machines in schools should be allowed to continue selling soda and a whole range of snack foods in the interests of a free market system. This Council appears to be nothing more than a highly-financed mouthpiece for various corporate interests. I have been highly skeptical of any of their "scientific" claims for a while now. Finding out that they do not support Arno's book actually makes me more interested in checking it out myself, so I have ordered a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for those dealing with breast cancer
Having just been diagnosed with a recurrence of non-metastatic breast cancer, I decided to seek out resources that might help me make the lifestyle changes I failed to make after my first episode, in order to prevent yet another recurrence. Since I'm in a doctoral program, I decided to take a course on alternative medicine and immediately began reading the texts, which led to this excellent resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better now, than later...
First, every woman I care about, my friends, sisters, mom, etc., will be getting a copy of this book as their next gift from me! Dr. Arnot gives example after example of medical research PLUS lifestyles of women all over the world showing better health than most Americans, revealing what scientists believe attribute to it! Unless every word and Doctor,or school referenced are all liars, this book is a LIFESAVE.Scientist have come a long way. They don't just say "don't eat this, but eat that" and you'll be fine. That's too simple. They know much more than that now and we need to take advantage of that. If they say breakfast is important, always eat SOMETHING,than that's what we should do! Ifyou want a fiction book,or an easy fix, or if you want to ramble about how research in mice has little to do with humans, than keep fooling yourself. I'll take all the help a reputable doctor or scientist or medical college wants to give to prolong my life AND give me GOOD HEALTH at the same time. Many of us ae having our children late in life.My youngest was born when I was 38.I've got to live a long time to be there for her.My mother had me at 18!She's 70 now and I love having her around.I trust there is nothing in Dr. Bob's book that will hurt me -- but that will only help me. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for newly diagnosed
I bought this right after my diagnosis and it was very helpful. This book answered questions I just couldn't get answers to.It also helped my husband with some concerns he had.I recommend getting it as soon as possible when you're first diagnosed. It's first rate!

5-0 out of 5 stars "WILL I EVER GET MY LIFE BACK?"
I ordered this book for my daughter who was having a "meltdown" dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy. She tells me that it was extremely comforting to see in print what she was living through and not losing her mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but a little neurotic
I bought this book within my first week of diagnosis with early stage (II-A) breast cancer. I am the target audience for the book, and found many useful tidbits in it; unfortunately, the author seems to tend to be a worrywart. There are big differences among oncologists' recommendations, and invariably the book would sound alarms ("don't go out to concerts! don't eat a salad in a restaurant!") that my oncologist found laughable. A lot of readers might be unduly frightened by what they read--in fact, some caution is good, but you might worry far too much because of the book's heavy emphasis on the dire. If that's your cup of tea, buy the book; as I said, there are good tidbits. Plus, it's breezy and well organized, and not at all intimidating to use as a reference. But if you take a fairly pragmatic and optimistic view, and if your oncologist does the same, I'd skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My life as a comic strip
As someone with metastatic breast cancer, I felt as though Miriam were writing about my own life. Who knew that those of us with breast cancer had such universal experiences? (Thank you for giving us that awareness, Miriam.) When I suggested to my family that cancer could be funny, they seriously doubted me and my sanity until they read this book. The "which breast?" cartoon made us all hysterical, and made me long to have t-shirt just like the one portrayed in the strip. The book is poignant, irreverant, laugh-out-loud funny, and truer than true.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I just finished this book today, one week after finding out that my metastatic breast cancer has progressed once again. After a very sobering meeting with my oncologist, I'm thinking about reading it again because I need a good laugh right now. I think anyone would enjoy this book, but for those of us living it right now, it's priceless. Don't waste your money on pink ribbons, buy this book and educate yourselves or someone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughing and Crying
If laughter has the power to heal, and there's plenty of reasons to think so, this book should be required reading for cancer patients. Its humor is all the more powerful because it so beautifully reveals the humanity and vulnerability of the author. The ending is sad, as others have noted. After I finished the book, I was afraid to try to find out how Miriam was doing, but then I couldn't help looking her up, as I had come to care about her so much.I recommend her website, [...]. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for......
I found this book to be very depressing and dark. The author kept saying how cancer will haunt you the rest of your life, little hope to escape it, you'll just have to live with it.I've choosen differently, but this book was NOT helpful in my after treatment recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not crazy...
After all my treatments for breast cancer were done, everyone told me i should feel better-but i didn't! My feeling were much worse than i expected after so many months and i'm glad i found and read this book! It helped me understand that it is OK to have lingering fears and emotions and that it is normal-especially months after treatment! Maybe it's because she is a survivor too, that makes this book so great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A blessing for all
For anyone who is facing or has faced the Breast Cancer challenge directly or indirectly ... or if you just want a window into the lives of others facing this challenge ... this book will help show the the way in and the way out. Simply, personally, clearly and gently shares the stories of many, and provides direction to the choices and paths available.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very New York!
Once I remembered where I was emotionally at 27, I could then get into this woman's ballsy approach to facing breast cancer. I used to live in NY, which adds to her in-your-face view of the world. I loved the story about the taxi driver! I loved the tattoo! I love how she eventually overcame it all even though it was not a pretty journey. How honest.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very surface
Every young woman's experience with cancer is different so this account is useful from that perspective. But as a young survivor I found it very ego-centric and not at all relateable. Is it tragic that she got breast cancer - yes.Is it more tragic that she got breast cancer AND she's "pretty" and married to a doctor and knows people whose names we recognize - no.While I acknowledge that body image and issues of sexuality and attractiveness seem to be more acute the younger a woman is - this book never develops beyond the surface.Being someone that is not interested in "It" girls (or guys) to begin with - her "it" experience with breast cancer is also lack-luster for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever AND touching personal story of breast cancer survival

5-0 out of 5 stars This verse unlocks the heart.
Terry Tempest Williams is a national treasure. Her unvarnished verse carries one deep into the mystery of the Earth and sends us helplessly into the depths of our own hearts. The landscape of wildness breaths a spectacular wisdom under the watchful eyes of this keen observer of wind, rock, desert, sky, sage, along with the birds who soar and dance and play in a benediction to non-sentient life.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you have been affected by cancer it is worth reading!!!
I loved and hated this book. It is beatifully written.I found the author frustrating at times. Some parts got a little long winded about the birds. It takes you on a emotional rollercoaster but the pay off of finishing this book is worth it.Any one who has been affected by cancer will find this book very inciteful to the process of going through treatment and also the death process. Terry Tempest gives the most authentic and honest account of what life is like living through cancer I have every read. She put into words thought and feelings I could never express fully.
3-0 out of 5 stars Suprising turn of events
Terry Tempest Williams is a naturalist living in Utah who has the history of cancer in her family.Cancer in this novel is paralleled with the flooding of the neighboring Great Salt Lake.Overall this book goes to show that cancer goes deeper than the person who it is diagnosed to.I would suggest this book on limited circumstances: One-if you can get past the strong feminine presence and domination of this novel. Two-do not read the last 60 or so pages.I approved of this book up until that point. If the book ended at that point, leaving out the harassment of the government it would be ten times better. To anyone who is in the process of reading Refuge, you won't want to read past around page 230. Enough said.
