4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Highly
As a surgeon who does a fair amount of breast surgery, I recommend this book, HIGHLY, to any body (including men) who may have or may be facing breast cancer. The book (which, yes, I have read), is given, by myself, to each and every patient of mine who has breast cancer. It IS, unfortunately, rather technical--but breast cancer isn't easy--and hence, this book.I believe strongly in educating patients as much as possible; my ONLY criticism of the book is lack of good, SIMPLE, photographs and illustrations which, of course, always makes a book easier to read.4/5 stars because of this.I will continue to purchase the book and give it to my patients. It will answer ALL of their questions--they will just have to dedicate their lives to educating themselves if they want to survive breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative and helpful place to start
My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2005. She was understandably worried and upset, facing many tests and being given a lot of information, some in terms she could not understand. I picked this book up for her in a local bookstore. I was impressed that it was written by breast cancer survivors ( who better to understand my sister's fears?) and it seemed to break down all the information into sections that were easy to read and comprehend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that is readable in a time of need.
I bought this book for a friend who has cancer. It offers information and support both medically and emotionally for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It is a gift for its clarity and kindness. An easy read that can help someone begin to be empowered when their world has been turned upside down.Thank you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lung cancer- a review
Pass' book is excellent, well-written, and comprehensive. It is one of the first books patients and family members should go to, though they should be cautioned that the book is written for a medical audience.Skip the first two chapters on mollecular biology which are far too technical, and go to some of the other chapters written in a detailed but comprehensive fashion. This book will prove exceptionally useful, but tough reading for many, so keep a medical dictionary and encylopedia nearby.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for lung cancer clinicians and patient
This second edition is an excellent, readable resource that makes few assumptions about the reader's familiarity with lung cancer, molecular biology, or cancer genetics. Contains many entirely new chapters as well as carefully updated material from the first edition. Geared to oncologists and researchers, but nonetheless a good foundation resource for patients and families who wish to learn a great deal about lung cancer and its management. ... Read more

"Many experts believe that Herceptin represents the future direction of breast cancer drugs, because it targets a particular protein on the cancer cell, rather than attacking all cells at random. As research progresses, scientist hope to make all anti-cancer drugs as specific as possible." ~ pg. 97
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific educational tool for the patient with breast cancer
Be a Survivor was chosen by our women's health professional group as the educational tool of choice to use with patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The book offers excellent graphic examples to reinforce the information provided and enlightens the reader through documented personal experiences with breast cancer. As a health care practitioner who has never experienced breast cancer it is an excellent tool for education and a take home reference for the patient throughout the breast cancer experience. The accompaning DVD is an excellent way for the patient and / or family to view the information when they are at home. The DVD also allows for a different learning medium for those visual learners.

I have yet to read the book, but I was reading over the reviews and I found it funny that a male was so ticked off that Dr. Vliet only spoke of female issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!
I thought I was going crazy!I was only 26 years old and I was visiting 5 different doctors that were treating me for various problems (weight gain, migraines, acne, depression, hot flashes and recurrent yeast infections).Every doctor told me the same thing...."DIET and EXERCISE or YOU NEED AN ANTIDEPRESSANT"!!! Then I read this book...It all made sense!!! Dr. Vliet helped me understand that a hormone imbalance could affect every part of my body.I didn't waste any time.I called Dr. Vliet and made an appointment. She was the answer to my prayers!
5-0 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS PLUS!
The title of this book jumped out at me and struck my curiousity. After reading the book and being totally blown away, I went to see Dr. Vliet in Texas for a second medical opinion.Words cannot express the positive improvement in my life as a direct result of Dr. Vliet. This fascinating book is full of true life examples and actual case studies based on her years of medical experience. Her writing style reflects wisdom, warmth, humor, expertise, encouragement, and HOPE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemotherapy and Radiationfor Dummies
This book is wonderful for those going through the challenges of chemotherapy and/or radiation. I purchased it for my mom----who is now in the middle of this experience herself. Wish I would have known about it months ago! My mom loves that it is written by two oncologists---for the medical info---and by an author (Patricia Corrigan)--who has personal experience with chemo and radiation herself. Mom also loves that it has an index to look up particular topics when needed. She later told me a couple tips about chemo that she learned from a Pat Corrigan.I thought she was talking about some friend of hers, but found out she was talking about the author---Patricia Corrigan---quoting from her book!!As if she was her close friend!!She was able to laugh about things that Patricia mentioned (the "fuzzy" thinking for one thing---that goes away after chemo is over!)Patricia's sense of humor and encouragement are really appreciated by my mom and I. What a gift this book is!
5-0 out of 5 stars 24 hour help in the midst of chaos
I am undergoing chemo for breast cancer and am finding this book immensely helpful. It is a handy travel companion guiding me through the foreign, and often scary, country of cancer.Although my doctors and nurses are available for all my questions, when I am bewildered and frightened (often at 3 AM) it is reassuring and comforting to be able to consult this informative, well-researched and encouraging book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great information about radiation and chemo
My wife had breast cancer and had to go through chemo and radiation. This would have been an excellent book to read at the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book in need of an update
This is a good book in an interesting format - a collection of comic strips that chronicles Lisa's battle with breast cancer. This format is more accessible for many who read comic books or strips. There are several strips in Lisa's Story that are NOT available on the King Features website. The strips are from 1999, the book 2000.In 2006, there was a "second chapter" in the story:recurrence. I hope that Mr. Batiuk publishes an updated version of Lisa's Story collecting all of the strips, including the ones from 2006.Now out of print, but definitely worth ordering at the available prices - I ordered one for me, and two for the local oncology center's lending library.

1-0 out of 5 stars a cutesy/powderpuff look at primary, early-stage bc
Like so many breast cancer books out there, this one fuels one of the great myths of breast cancer today: Lisa survives the disease and they all live happily ever after. This and many of the texts on breast cancer tend to gloss over the reality: that no one is ever really safe from the possibility of their cancer returning. And if it does, there's really nothing funny about it.5-0 out of 5 stars A book with wide appeal
As a woman surgeon who treats women for breast cancer, I was intrigued by this book. I found it delightful! It treats a serious subject with just the right touch. More importantly, it is loaded with insights into breast cancer, the way patients and health care professionals interact, and the reaction of family and friends. The front part of the book reprints the story of Lisa, who discovers a lump in her breast, copes with diagnosis, treatment - including surgery, chemotherapy, and reconstruction, and gets on with her life with a good sense of humor. The back part of the book has one of the best selections of resource material for breast cancer patients and their families that I have ever seen. This is not just a book for women - it's a book for their husbands and their families and friends. Finally, it's a book that medical students and physicians should read - it holds up a mirror to the medical profession and laughs gently at our shortcomings. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Breast Ultrasound 'Bible'
The main reason I purchased this book was use it as a review before taking the Breast Ultrasound registry. The authors (Stavros/Rapp) are respected in their field, and I have attended their conference lectures. The overall size of the book was a bit intimidating at first (nearly 1000 pages). On the plus side, the images are outstanding. The image descriptions duplicate the text word-for-word, which really helps to cement the facts in your head. The chapters are formatted very logically, even if some of them are nearly 100 pages long.In my journey through the book I found only a couple of minor typographic/editing errors. If you are reading carefully, these won't be a problem. This book is now firmly planted in my office as a reference.Oh, and by the way, I did pass the registry!Kara Chickering, R.T., RDMS, RDCS, RVT ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
In 2000-01, I had 3 lumpectomies. All my mammograms were negative. The 3rd lump was excised when I was 62.I was a cytotechnologist for Unilab in Tarzana, CA.My medical director, Dr. Adele Hieshima, had a copy of Dr. Rosen's book on breast pathology. We went over it together.I was amazed at how many types of breast cancer there were.Cancer was revealed in my 3rd lumpectomy, but Kaiser could not identify it.They sent my tissue to a specialist in New York. I was surprised to receivethe pathology report from Dr. Rosen himself, along withpage numbers to consult in his book. His book clarified matters for me so I elected bi-lateral mastectomy. His book and his advice led to early detection and complete recovery.Thank you Dr. Rosen! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Newly Diagnosed Patients
This book is extremely important because Dr. Kaelin approaches breast cancer both as a highly respected medical professional and as a patient herself. I have just finished eight months of treatment and I know first hand how hard it is to integrate the medical profession information with the emotional side of things. Dr. Kaelin has bridged that gap for all of us. I found answers to every single question that arose for me well documented in this book and easy to find too - I only wish it was published six months earlier!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Guide
This comprehensive book will help any breast cancer survivor navigate the medical system and become her own best advocate for quality health care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved me from chemotherapy induced insomnia!!
This book saved me when I has having chemotherapy and ended up with constant insomnia. I had not read about that as a side effect of breast cancer treatments until this book which has a good discussion of drugs usually used to treat breast cancer. I had read LOTS of books prior to my treatment and only this one mentioned drugs used to treat insomnia. If hadn't of known, I probably would still be staring at the ceiling ALL NIGHT wondering what the heck was going on!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ
THAN YOU to the author is so inadequate for such a book as this.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Life, Too
Cancer Etiquette, by Rosanne Kalick, is not only an etiquette guide for friends, family, and caregivers of cancer patients. It not only tells us what to say or not to say; what to do or not to do; what to give or not to give. The book could be thought of as a guide for all our interactions in life, and the love, compassion, kindness, and joy that are so necessary. The author is a two-time cancer survivor who has been able to distill what has happened to her, including her good and bad interactions with people, into this detailed, valuable, life-affirming, and timeless guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be in everyone's library
This book will be helpful for everyone. We have all been in the situation of not knowing what to say or do for someone who has cancer...or any other life threatening disease for that matter.
