1-0 out of 5 stars a bit heavy on the christianity
The book has some practical(although somewhat obvious) advice. However, much of the book is dominated by references to God, Jesus Christ, to praying, to things like making a poster of a scripture saying etc.If you are not a Christian, you may not relate to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging
I found this book full of ideas to help a friend or family member going through the trauma of cancer. The author gives her personal experience with exherts from her diary and relates how she was helped during hercancer treatment. I also liked the way Pamela related her helpfulsuggestions in a practical way, stating what to do and what not to doduring different stages of cancer treatment and recovery. It certainly gaveme a better understanding of the cancer patient and how I may be able tohelp.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational, informative and resourceful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vitally important addition to every community library Health/Medicine reference collection in the country
Collaborative compiled, organized and edited by the team of Doctors David G. Bostwick (Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Virginia); E. David Crawford (Associate Director, University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer City, Aurora, Colorado); Celestia S. Higano (Oncology Specialist, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Associate Professor, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle); and Mack Roach III (Professor of Radiation Oncology and Urology, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of California, San Francisco), the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide To Prostate Cancer is a single volume compendium providing the non-specialist general reader with all of the up-to-date information available on prostate cancer. Included are the latest advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment of prostate cancer; varied prostate cancer treatments and the decision making process to determine the best one for the reader; coping with emotional stresses and potential physical side effects (including incontinence and erectile dysfunction); practical issues related to work, finance, and medical care; as well as the fundamental quality of life issues after treatment, including sexuality and relationships. With prostate cancer affecting one in six of American men, with more than a quarter of a million American men diagnosed with prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide To Prostate Cancer is a vitally important addition to every community library Health/Medicine reference collection in the country.

This book was loaned to me from the library of Mass General Hospital. It had absolutely no information on any "alternative treatments" or anything other than the standard treatments which are mostly 40 years old and known to fail to cure prostate cancer. Numerous treatments in current literature are not even in the index. This book is at least 30 years out of date and contains no useful suggestion for anyone with a cancer that might have spread.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This is an excellent source of information, given at an appropriate level of detail: not too technical, yet comprehensive enough to be useful.I first purchased it when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and I'm now revisiting it since my son was diagnosed with cancer.Part Five of the book describes treating the common cancers and covers over 51 types of cancer. At the end of each of the 51 sections is an incredibly helpful subsection "The Most Important Questions You Can Ask". For my mother's treatment, I brought the book with me during the doctor's consultation and asked each question that was listed. It opened the door for honest, realistic communication between the doctor, my mother and our family on a host of issues.I intend to bring the book with me for the doctor's consultation with my son.If you or a loved one has cancer, I highly recommend this book.It will serve as a valuable guide and help you to stay focused and informed when the riot of emotions threatens to overwhelm and incapacitate you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Readable Book on Cancer
I received a an earlier edition of this book in 1991 when I was diagnosed with colon cancer and found that the information on cancer was presented in such a way that most people could understand. Since that time, whenever I hear of someone having cancer, I buy a copy of the book and give it to them. The book is very comprehensive and besides covering all the different sites for cancer as well as treatment, it is well illustrated and has many references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, intelligent and interesting nutritional approach to cancer
I was diagnosed 9 years ago with advanced multiple metastatic cancers and a grim prognosis.I stumbled across this book in a health food store and was taken by the intelligence and straightforwardness of the program's design and by the apparent sincerity and enthusiasm of the late Mr. Breuss.I scrupulously followed his full 42-day vegetable juice fast twice, with about a year in between. The first time, I used the pre-made Breuss Juice from Biotta, and the second time I did all the juicing myself in a GreenPower juicer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
Breuss was a man of integrity and inspiration. His theory is sound. However the theory is not as easy to put into practice as it at first appears, First, you have to want to get better. That's not straightforward and requires physical, psychic and emotional work. Then there is the prospect of no social interaction over food for six weeks. That's not something most people have ever experienced in a lifetime. Thirdly the lack of mastication needs to be addressed, to me someone needs to come up with something between Breuss (best) and Gerson (good), that would be five star +!.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Breuss Cancer Cure
Very easy for reading and understanding, furthermore I know a woman who lived 6 years instead 1 month (per doctors assumption)after using the therapy.Who ever wants to get better, not only from cancer but all kind of illnesses I recomend from the bottom of my heart. There is herbal store in Ventura, Ca under the name Ema's herbs and they can provide all necessary herbs for therapy.Try it, nothing to lose but illness. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Soy NOT a Safe Way to Prevent Breast Cancer
Awaken the Warrior Goddess! What a powerful and positive message for today's women. Unhappily, Dr. Horner enters the fray with the dangerous advice that women protect themselves from breast cancer by increasing their consumption of soy. In fact, the evidence that soy prevents breast cancer is inconsistent and contradictory at best, with numerous studies showing soy can cause, contribute to or accelerate the growth of cancer, particularly breast cancer. I am not alone in this concern. The Israeli Health Ministry has warned that babies should not receive soy formula, that children to age 18 should consume soy foods or soy milk nomore than once per day to a maximum of 3 times per week and that adults should exercise caution because of adverse effects on fertility and increased breast cancer risk. The French Food Agency is now implementing regulations that will require warning labels on soy foods advising consumers of risks to women who have been diagnosed with or have a family history of breast cancer.Cornell University has also warned women at risk for breast cancer to take it easy on soy. Finally, soy contributes to numerous other health problems such as hypothyroidism, infertility and cognitive decline.Awake warriors need to know that POSSIBLE benefits are outweighed by PROVEN risks and a good policy is "better safe than sorry."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent health tips!
This book provides a variety of tips for healthy living, especially related to the prevention or recurrance of breast cancer. Just incorporating a few of them into your lifestyle would be a positive change. I recommend this to all women.

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for all women and men too
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and I read this book in the last week of September. So, this is the right time to share my views about this book with you. It also happens that this is the season for worshipping the Goddess Durga to whom the author refers to in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What everybody should know
I think that this book should be translated to every language and be read by all people concerned, doctors and patients alike. This book gives you an insight into what really goes on and what should go on...

1-0 out of 5 stars completely outdated
Not only is the information old, it's not very comprehensive. If you can get hold of Ron Falcone's Complete Guide To Alternative Cancer Therapies (also outdated but technically, very informative and provides an excellent background into key alternative therapies), do so. From a historical standpoint, Falcone's work is an excellent and scholarly introduction to the subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but outdated

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book!
Not only does this book deal with a very sensitive and difficult topic in a very intelligent, straightforward, sensitive, and psychologically healthymanner, but it teaches extremely valuable skills for parenting and coping with ANY troubles life may throw your way. The companion book for children does the very same thing, and very effectively teaches children coping skills in an encouraging, realistic, and safe way. Both books excel in highlighting and addressing differences between the ways adults process thoughts and emotions and the way children do this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read and understand
This is an excellent book I have ever read on prostate cancer. Because it is easy to understand. There are some other books on the subject but when you read them it is very difficult to understand. In other words, it is also easy for layman to understand this book. While reading a book if you understand most of what the book says you get pleasure. As is known, medical language is a highly technical language, it is not easy to understand such language. But this book solves the language problems and the reader can easily understand most of the book if he is a careful reader. I would like to thank both the authors and the publisher to publish such a good book to help people like me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Avery good place to start
A diagnosis of prostate cancer is just the first step in a long process, the next step must be educating yourself. The depth of information available can be staggering and often conflicting. Doctors will rarely agree on a definitive course of treatment. Fortunately, for the vast majority of us there is time to educate and reflect on all the options available. This book is a very good place to start the education process and full of references to other sources to completely explore your options

4-0 out of 5 stars The Discovery of the Orgone
Wilhelm Reich's most detailed review of his experiments in the U.S. outside of his psychiatric practice. In this text he explains thoroughly HIS discovery of the Orgone (chi, prana, ki) and its origins (I emphasize HIS discovery because every person stands to discover something different as it relates to them). He found it to be a cosmic energy, all pervading, emanating towards healthy life, healing, and protecting. He used it in several documented cases to cure cancer (thus the title). He experimented with it in combating nuclear radiation (and made one of his leaps into metaphysics), stating that orgone energy and nuclear radiation are opposing forces (the manifestations of good and evil). This point is highly controversial and became a jump off point for his desires to show people what he had spent his life doing, and how his ostrisisation from the mainstream medical societies he once was a part of was un-called for.He and his staff encounter an unnatural resistance to disease, increased eyesight (no need to wear glasses), increased circulation, and other positive reactions to daily orgone accumulation. The very same accumulators are described in this book, and even more on the internet... what more to say?Wilhelm Reich is considered to be a quack by most people, and yet no one denies he actually cured the people he had in his care through the use of a 'box' (that used no electricity, and is only made of alternating layers of steel wool, and lambs wool), in which the patients sat for 30 min. to an hour.As always, read for yourself, find someone with an orgone energy accumulator, feel and experience for yourself. ... "I didn't choose to study breast cancer--it chose me," writes Jane A. Plant, Ph.D., chief scientist of the British Geological Survey. Plant knows firsthand the terrifying experience of battling breast cancer that grew progressively worse five times and spread to her lymph system. She also knows the exhilaration and empowerment of defeating it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must to read and keep for all breast cancer patients
I live in Spain, and some friends from the UK sent me a cutting on the book, which I ordered. I read it while I was in treatment and it helped me no end in many ways. I have followed the diet and I am now still in complete recession almost four years after I finished my treatment for breast cancer and secondary liver metastasis. The book is excellent and well-documented, and Jane Plant makes a convincing case very well indeed. For me the book is like a bible, and I have recommended to it to numerous friends and fellow patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Economics of Beast Cancer
Jane Plant's book is ground-breaking and courageous. Every woman who's had breast cancer should read it. This is information no-one else will give you. Breast cancer is a huge industry, with expensive chemotherapy treatments that benefit only about one in ten women. Conventional medicine is limited in what it can offer breast cancer patients, and tends to camouflage the picture with pink ribbons, "look good, feel good" programs, and the like. I agree with the reviewer who suggested that the dairy industry doesn't want this information out there (remember the Mad Cow scare and the beef industry?)Women in Holland (high dairy intake) and farmers' wives have a higher incidence of breast cancer. Breast cancer patients need to help themselves in any way they can. I have read many alternative-therapy books but this one is tops, and is a must-read not only for women but also for men who wish to avoid prostate cancer, which is now one in eight, same as breast cancer. By the way, I'm an MD and a breast cancer patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition and Cancer
This book by Jane Plant, a British geologist, deals with a very difficult and emotional subject for women, breast cancer. It also has the potential to raise the eyebrows of anyone with a scientific background. There are numerous traps that Jane Plant could have fallen into, however, she avoids all potential disasters and winds up with a very scientific treatise on the subject of nutrition and cancer (breast and prostate). The book is mostly about her fight against breast cancer and the revelation that Oriental women have a very low rate of breast cancer. From this morsel Jane deduces that there may be a significant dietary component to the cause of the disease. Working from there she goes on to discuss a number of scientific studies that involve the growth factors that are contained in dairy products. Jane uses logic and scientific fact to come to the conclusion that dairy products are the single most important factor causing breast cancer in western women. She concludes by offering an alternative diet for women who wish to lower their chances of contracting the disease. This book is a must read for any breast cancer activist and any health care professional who treats breast cancer in women. It is surprising that the book has not gotten more publicity and attention. I suspect the American dairy industry may have had something to do with that. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor is the director of medical oncology at the renowned Strang Cancer Prevention Center in New York City. His mother died of breast cancer when he was 9, and he's made it his mission to spare other people the pain his family endured. Gaynor is concerned with the ubiquitousness of pesticides, herbicides, and other environmental toxins linked to cancer (the U.S. has made the use of DDT illegal, but regularly exports it to Third World countries for use on crops that are harvested and imported back to the States). He says, "even those of us who don't smoke, eat a high-fat diet, and don't work in a chemical plant are still living, at work and at play, on a profoundly soiled an carcinogenic planet."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource
This truly is a fabulous resource! The information is quite straightforward and covers a wide array of areas/issues that are certain to be impacted by the news of a loved one being ill.The components of the book cover areas such as understanding your feelings, how our fears play out in the ordeal, how to have conversations regarding the illness and ramifications of the illness, how to find resourceful medical care and how to balance one's role in life given the situation.5-0 out of 5 stars This should be for coping with any medical problem
My spouse had heart disease. At the same time, I was looking for a book for a friend with cancer. I found Precious and read it before giving it as a gift. I realized the suggestions applied to my family. I started using the author's ideas immediately and it helped us tremendously. I find myself quoting her often in my volunteer work at church (with patients) and with friends. One friend called and said she was having serious problem coping with her husband's diabetes. She read the book and called to tell me that after following the advice in Precious, she saw a dramatic change in the way her family communicated and supported each other. Another friend said she was in an argument with her daughter about the father's illness. The mother used the suggestions in the book to calm her daughter down. Later that evening, the daughter (in her 30s) came up to her mom and said, "Thank you. What you said and how you said it was wonderful!" This book should not even have cancer on the cover. It's practical, moving, upbeat and extremely helpful for patients and families coping with any medical challenge. J. Long, past president of a personnel agency

5-0 out of 5 stars PSA Reversed
I had prostate cancer and chose radical prostatectomy for treatment.Prognosis was good eventhough my Gleasons had been 9 & 10. PSA should have remained zero, but began to climb two years after surgery.I studied Dr. Katz book, followed several of his recommendations, and within two months my PSA dropped from 15+ down to 13.7 and hopefully will continue in that direction. The book is very credible. His redcommendations are all backed up with good data and science.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am the Author
This book also addresses exercises and information for those with Lymphedema. However when you go to Google, Yahoo.com or any search engine.......this book does not come up when you type in Lymphedema. It does come up for a lot of other needs like cancer, exercise, health, disease, fitness, etc which is also what the book has in the way of exercise and information, but perhaps people with Lymphedema are missing out by not including the connection to Lymphedema as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Thriving After Breast Cancer
Users will find Sherry Lebed Davis' book inspirational and valuable. It is easy to follow with many useful photos.5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Saver for Body and Spirit!
Upbeat, inspiring, innovative, medically sound, and therapeutic in the broadest, most uplifting sense! I was privileged recently to have been present at a Book Signing attended also by many women who had been members of the Focus on Healing Classes, some of them for a long time period. You have never seen such a vibrantly beautiful collection of "winners" gathered in one spot to celebrate the joys of participating in the program described. Sherry herself is Positive Force personified, and her cup-half-full take on life shines through every page of the book, as it describes her wonderful program. An absolute must-have for anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. Buy it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best at all and unnecessarily demoralizing in places
As the wife of a man just diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, I found this book very disturbing because it seems to over-emphasize deaths and tragedies and not survivors in many places. For example, in the section on how prostate cancer impacts spouses and daughters, there were nine women's stories--five of whom had their men die of prostate cancer, two of whom had upsetting stories about advanced prostate cancer, and only two with men who had had locally confined prostate cancer and seemed to do alright.Since 13 percent of all men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and only 2-3 percent of all men die from it, this seemed to be a VERY VERY unbalanced treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars The finest book in its class
The ABCs of Prostate Cancer is simply the finest book in its class. It elegantly and cleanly takes the most difficult concepts and clearly and simply lays them out. The use of graphic is the best I've encountered in apopular medicine book. Dr. Oesterling's devotion to his own father, who hadprostate cancer, is remarkable. This gives any prostate cancer patient asharp and clear edge with the best presentation of the most up to datematerial yet. Nice Job! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why We Walk: The Inspirational Journey Toward a Cure for Breast Cancer
I had the pleasure of meeting Deb Murphy on a "Walk" and am so excited about this book. They certainly did a magnificent job of putting together interviews with so many people all striving for one common goal, to eradicate breast cancer. In the meantime, these very very dedicated people are doing a large part.I am fortunate also to be related to one of the women mentioned in the book, who never stops surprising me with her strength and dedication to this cause. It is just so emotional to read about these individuals. Knowing, all too well, there also are so many others out there walking and walking. The stories are never ending and you meet such remarkable people as shown in this beautiful book.Thank you so much for creating this inspirational work of art. ...
