5-0 out of 5 stars "Excellent "Book on Nutrition &Cancer
WOW!! This impressive book is for the person who desires to "optimize" their own health. Diana, a Registered Dietitian, and survivor of THREE episodes of cancer herself, discusses the on-going and evolving state of nutrition research and how she uses that information to determine her own "optimal diet" to treat/prevent cancer recurrence. She discloses how she has implemented good nutrition and complementary therapies into her everyday life. She shares her own recipes, serving sizes, sample menus, tips for eating 9+ servings of fruits and vegetables, recipe book sources, her own personal grocery list, dining-out tips, and newsletter, book & internet resource listings. Don't pass up this great help-yourself book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so helpful that I volunteered to translate it!
When I started reading A Dietitian's Cancer Story, I found it so interesting, well written, and practical that I could not stop until I had finished. Then I thought, what a wonderful information resource from which many people around the world could benefit. It has been a pleasure for me to translate A Dietitian's Cancer Story into Spanish (Historia De Cancer De Una Dietista) which is also now available on Amazon.com.I admire Diana Dyer as a nutrition professional and also as a patient who has gone through a lot to be where she is now: helping many people. The field of cancer and nutrition has been enriched with the book A Dietitian's Cancer Story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diana Dyer is a Good Teacher
This would be a very helpful book for anyone who wants to improve her or his nutrition, regardless of whether they have cancer or not. The author starts out by teaching the reader how to have a well balanced diet -information everyone needs to know. One of the things I like best about thebook is that she acknowledges that research on nutrition and cancer isincomplete, but then goes on to discuss how to include foods that have beenshown to be possibly helpful in preventing cancer. The book is packed withuseful information and helpful hints to make the dietary changes easier andmore enjoyable. Reviewed by Patricia J. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very New York!
Once I remembered where I was emotionally at 27, I could then get into this woman's ballsy approach to facing breast cancer. I used to live in NY, which adds to her in-your-face view of the world. I loved the story about the taxi driver! I loved the tattoo! I love how she eventually overcame it all even though it was not a pretty journey. How honest.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very surface
Every young woman's experience with cancer is different so this account is useful from that perspective. But as a young survivor I found it very ego-centric and not at all relateable. Is it tragic that she got breast cancer - yes.Is it more tragic that she got breast cancer AND she's "pretty" and married to a doctor and knows people whose names we recognize - no.While I acknowledge that body image and issues of sexuality and attractiveness seem to be more acute the younger a woman is - this book never develops beyond the surface.Being someone that is not interested in "It" girls (or guys) to begin with - her "it" experience with breast cancer is also lack-luster for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping it simple
How do you go about explaining something to your children that you have difficulty understanding yourself? Well Barklay and Eve make the process easier. This wonderful book describes the most complicated procedures in simple terms without talking down to children. I found the illustrations and story content charming and informative. Children will find the common hair loss of cancer a much less frightening process when they see the fun that Eve has with a wig. While dealing with cancer can't be made easier, Barklay and Eve can make explaining it easier. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reminder to seize the day
I picked this up at the airport looking for an interesting, easy read during a business trip.Since I've recently become a fan of cycling I thought this would fit the bill, and it did.
1-0 out of 5 stars another cocky bio by the same cocky guy
interesting enough, lance loves to blather on about how its important that one cannot get absorbed in himself, but rather be about the team. i quote lance "if you aren't thinking 'team,' you got left home." ok, sounds alright. then i flip a page and read further: [floyd landis got second place in a race]..."I patted myself on the back for being smart enough to recognize how good he was before he saw it for himself..." ok lance, we get the point, you're awesome at everything, including being 'smart.' but you don't quite understand the 'team' concept

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book
Throughout this book Lance Armstrong talks about different aspects of his life. From struggling with cancer, his training for the Tour de France, raising three children, and all the other criticism he faces; this book has not only a factual account of his life, but ideas that are useful to all. "Winning only measures how hard you've worked and how physically talented you are; it doesn't particularly define you beyond those characteristics. Losing, on the other hand, really does say something about who you are."

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

I understand these recipes are intended to introduce people to eating more appropriately sized meals -- a worthy cause. However, the book goes way overboard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Eating for Good Health
The book is beautifully illustrated andthe recipes are innovative, based on easy-to-find ingredients.I recently served the Mixed Greens with Blueberries and Feta salad and the Asian-style Stir-fried Vegetables at a dinner party andthey were a big hit.The nutritional data is helpful to those on restricted diets.I have recommended this book to my daughter who is an avid cookbook collector, as am I.This one is a keeper! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This verse unlocks the heart.
Terry Tempest Williams is a national treasure. Her unvarnished verse carries one deep into the mystery of the Earth and sends us helplessly into the depths of our own hearts. The landscape of wildness breaths a spectacular wisdom under the watchful eyes of this keen observer of wind, rock, desert, sky, sage, along with the birds who soar and dance and play in a benediction to non-sentient life.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you have been affected by cancer it is worth reading!!!
I loved and hated this book. It is beatifully written.I found the author frustrating at times. Some parts got a little long winded about the birds. It takes you on a emotional rollercoaster but the pay off of finishing this book is worth it.Any one who has been affected by cancer will find this book very inciteful to the process of going through treatment and also the death process. Terry Tempest gives the most authentic and honest account of what life is like living through cancer I have every read. She put into words thought and feelings I could never express fully.
3-0 out of 5 stars Suprising turn of events
Terry Tempest Williams is a naturalist living in Utah who has the history of cancer in her family.Cancer in this novel is paralleled with the flooding of the neighboring Great Salt Lake.Overall this book goes to show that cancer goes deeper than the person who it is diagnosed to.I would suggest this book on limited circumstances: One-if you can get past the strong feminine presence and domination of this novel. Two-do not read the last 60 or so pages.I approved of this book up until that point. If the book ended at that point, leaving out the harassment of the government it would be ten times better. To anyone who is in the process of reading Refuge, you won't want to read past around page 230. Enough said.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can be strong!
This is a great book for women with breast cancer who want to be strong or stay strong. It has great information on what kind of exercise we need and has specific exercises for our various surgeries. When I started chemo everyone told me that 80% of women gain weight. I was lucky to find a local fitness program for people with cancer (Living Strong Living Well) and I was able to work out during the time I took Taxol. Not only did I not gain weight but I know how to lift weights and feel so strong. This book will now help me get through Tamoxifen and work on being fit for life. Well done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cook book for everyone
I use this book daily for recipe ideas. All the recipes I have tried have been excellent. The different flavors and variety and information is perfect for anyone. You don't have to have cancer or be a cancer survivor or care taker. The recipes are wonderful. The Magic Mineral Broth recipe is just the best. I use it often as the base to making rice instead of plain water. Everyone who have tasted my rice have just loved it. The broth can be frozen and I at times drink it straight instead of teas. It is full of vitamins and minerals that the body needs. Try it for yourself!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone loves this food
I love the soups and the other food I have eaten from recipies from this book. I am just a friend and have eaten dinners with those who needed to eat the food prepared these special ways. I don't have these issues myself. I would choose these yummy selections over and over. They are as good, or really, far better than regular recipies. This is top notch eating regardless of the reason they were invented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caregiver's Hidden Secret
This an excellent book.I bought it for my mother-in-law who has pancreatic cancer.I am a nutritionist and she looked to me for some assistance. My main concern is to just keep her appetite so she keeps eating.I happened upon this book at a book festival and was pleasantly surprised. The recipes were nutritious, not complicated and had aroused all of the senses--she loves the smells and the tastes of everything we make. While she was researching specialized diet books that gave her a list of foods that she should eat, this book brought it all together. It bridged that gap.It also has some wonderful stories inside. It should be given to all cancer patients but then again, I find myself making these recipes for my own family--We love it just as much as she does!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO UNDERSTAND
A necessary foundation to begin the process of learning about prostrate cancer, what to ask when going to the doctor, and help in deciding which treatment is best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough, easy to read
My wife and I found this book to be extremely user-friendly. My doctor suggested this book before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it helped us understand the entire diagnosis process. It is completely up-to-date, including nutritional discussions, and it was the best resource we found that discusses all of our treatment options objectively. It was by far the easiest to use and understand compared to some of the other books available--it wasn't preachy and it didn't talk down to the reader. This book has become a well-worn companion of ours and we highly recommend it to anyone that has questions or concerns about their prostate health in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite on this topic
Contrary to other readers, I didn't appreciate this book quite as much as Prostrate Cancer for Dummies. Some of the advice was in conflict with other sources, and I was really concerned with the section that suggested it was kosher to return to the diagnosing urologist for the surgery.Skill and experience are critical for this surgery - I think you should find the best (and forget about professional courtesy).I also felt like the author tended to be arrogant with his opinions.Just my opinion, but I wish I had gotten Walsh's book which I've seen recommended on multiple support sites.I am very happy, though, with the Prostate Cancer for Dummies book which I found to be upbeat and easy to understand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one
Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer is an excellent resource for many folks. It is NOT just for those dealing with prostate cancer. It is chock full of interesting and tasty recipes which include a variety of soy products. There is a full complement of recipes ranging from appetizers to desserts.Any woman who wants to include soy in her diet to deal with menopausal symptoms, any person who wants to decrease the amount of animal protein in his/her diet or any parent who wants to include high quality soy protein in the family meal plan should invest in this resource. It is much more than just a cookbook.I have purchased many soy based cookbooks over the years looking for something like "Eat to Beat..."This is the ONE!Thanks,David Ricketts.

Nonetheless, the benefits that have come from my change in diet are well worth it!I've shed a few pounds and feel great.Ninety-nine percent of the recipes I've tried are easy and delicious.Speaking of easy and delicious, I've impressed a couple of my dates with these recipes.Although I still eat like a T-Rex, from time to time, I feel confident that (prostate) cancer won't make me extinct.Cheers! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book on adjuvants in cancer therapy that is both conservative and very thorough
For a few decades a few scientists, some of them Nobel laureates, have believed that antioxidants may prevent and even help to treat cancer. Some of the ideas and clinical results have been very promising, but have not received the attention they deserve.Even worse, unsubstantiated and even false claims have been bandied about by some of those who claim to know everything about the antioxidants, which makes anyone who touches the subject appear to be disreputable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for co-doctoring
All cancer patients must co-doctor if they are going to survive. Most cancer doctors will warn against the harmful effects of taking antioxidants with chemotherapy or radiation treatments. This book completely debunks that medical school dogma.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anybody with cancer
This book provides concise information regarding nutritional supplements that are effective in fighting cancer. I am battling Colon Cancer.Traditional medicine has its place, but the statistics were not very comforting.I thus have spent a great deal of time researching CAM (complimentary alternative medicines). One is quickly overwhelmed by the volume of (often contradictory) information available via web and books. For this, Dr. Moss is a goldmine. This book allows one to setup an affordable supplement program based on current scientific research, not quackery.I am happy to report that I have done very well with the chemo, and am confident that I will beat this cancer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have
Since my diagnosis three weeks ago I have checked out and read every book on chemo and radiation in my county's library system. This is by far the best - it's the only one I decided to go out and purchase so I could keep it around for reference. The advice is very down to earth and practical. The authors' knowledge and practical experience is evident on each page. The diagnosis of cancer sent me into an information seeking frenzy - I'm glad that I found this one right away as it de-mystified a lot of things for me. Read this one first!

2-0 out of 5 stars Little info for Radiation
I bought this book expecting information for dealing with radiation. There was very little information on radiation at all. The book may be useful for Chemotherapy patients (which is why I give it two stars). It had no stars of value for me dealing with radiation. My doctor told me more. "Cancer for dummies" and "just get me through this" have more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This was a great little bite-sized book - my favorite part was where the author dealt square-on with death.I have used the analogy she wrote in this book so many times! What a gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars AbsolutelyInsightful!
Dr. Adler shares her experience with Lymphoma. My husband was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. This book tells current and factual information regarding diagnosis, signs & symptoms, side effects & treatment. When I can understand the diagnosis, I don't fear it. I would highly recommend this to anyone with any type of cancer, especially lymphoma. Judith Hafner

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd read it sooner!
I read this book after I completed my last round of R-CHOP and sure wish I'd read this book before I had started my treatments!Even so, it is full of helpful information. There are lots of technical terms and complete sections that I just couldn't understand, but what I did read was informative. If you're looking for a book that will help you cope with a long term living with Lymphoma, don't buy this book. It's really more for how to cope with the treatments, side effects from the different forms of chemo, what to expect in the future, etc.The author, being a doctor, was certainly not very proactive about her illness until she found out that it was non-hodgkins lymphoma. All of her odd symptoms were misdiagnosed and mis-treated for quite a while before she was finally diagnosed accurately. This in itself is a lesson, but unless you have lymphoma, you wouldn't be reading this book, so it's not very helpful to the lymphoma patient except to show us that those in the medical field aren't perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not the Lymphoma patient, but.....
This book was the best source of information for both my husband and I as we go through treatment. It answered questions and helped formulate others for the Dr. to answer. It is by my bedside everynight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best, Supposedly
My husband contracted prostate cancer in 1995, had the "seed" treatment successfully, but it came back in 2003.He seems to have read EVERYTHING, scoured the internet and even talked to physicians across the US, including Dr. Scardino. My husband considers this the best general reference book you will find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Scardino did my surgery.
I read this book from the perspective that I knew that Dr. Scardino was personally going to do my surgery.
5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer
I thought this would be a depressing read, required by my situation. To the contrary I found myself significantly comforted by the facts that Scardino presented. For anyone with the condition this is a must read.Go to uptodate.com to get research articles written after the 2005 publication and you should be comfortable you've done your research. ...
