5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information...
I found this book to be a true inspiration for me. I found out about it through one of the Massage magazines and I can honestly say it was one of the best and most important purchaces I made since I graduted from massage school in 1999.5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderfully insightful book
As a massage therapist, I was trained that massage was generally contraindicated for cancer patients. Gayle does a wonderful job of explaining why massage is appropriate, the chemistry behind metastisis and the issues around massage treatment along the continuum of cancer treatment. It also has a chapter on death and dying that I recommend to many patients. I have made this a required text in the therapeutic massage program as our local community college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I was privileged to take a weekend seminar from Gayle MacDonald, and Ipurchased the book at that time. Her amazing compassion and caring areevident in every line of this book. If you have been told that massage isnot appropriate for people living with cancer, this book will change yourthinking. The book also gives a very good basic description of the processthat cells go through to become cancerous, and de-mystifies some of thetreatments that patients go through. Medicine Hands is a practical, down toearth book that is well worth reading. It is an excellent book for anyoneliving with cancer - in one's self or in a loved one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"There are two aspects to the human side of cancer: what cancer doespsychologically to people and their families, and how emotions and behaviors mayinfluence the risk of getting cancer and its outcome," writes Jimmie C. Holland,M.D., founder of the field of psycho-oncology (the psychological issues ofcancer) and chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences atthe Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. "The human side of cancer is allencompassing; it's about you, your surroundings, and your experience of theillness."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource...
This book comes highly recommended. It seeks to instill a feeling of acceptance and comfort for distressed cancer patients. The author discusses how to cope with difficult emotions in all stages of cancer, from initial diagnosis and onwards. As a doc working with cancer patients myself, I cannot overstate the importance of Dr Holland's message. For example, one of her points that really stood out for me was the idea that negative emotions cannot cause the cancer. Some people do worry that they must always remain positive, even if they have to fake it.Not true...being real and honest is far more important...having occasional negative thoughts and feelings is normal and does not make the cancer worse.Dr. Holland presents these ideas in one of the most non-judgmental ways you will ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Overall very helpful
This is one of the few books I can imagine my mother reading. She was recently diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer and I ordered this book (and a couple others) to help my understanding of the emotional aspects of the disease and treatments. My mother generally escews "self-help" type books and outside help such as counseling. But this book is matter-of-fact and is presented in a way that respects individual differences and styles. It's not full of "touchy feely" (Mom's phrase) jargon but does address psychological issues effectively.Mom might actually find this one helpful, as I have. One weakness I found was the short section on ovarian cancer -- it addresses mostly fertility and sexuality issues -- the first doesn't apply to the older woman and the latter may or may not -- the writer seems to miss the boat on this type of cancer in the older woman.Overall, though, a helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for newly diagnosed
I bought this right after my diagnosis and it was very helpful. This book answered questions I just couldn't get answers to.It also helped my husband with some concerns he had.I recommend getting it as soon as possible when you're first diagnosed. It's first rate!

5-0 out of 5 stars "WILL I EVER GET MY LIFE BACK?"
I ordered this book for my daughter who was having a "meltdown" dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy. She tells me that it was extremely comforting to see in print what she was living through and not losing her mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but a little neurotic
I bought this book within my first week of diagnosis with early stage (II-A) breast cancer. I am the target audience for the book, and found many useful tidbits in it; unfortunately, the author seems to tend to be a worrywart. There are big differences among oncologists' recommendations, and invariably the book would sound alarms ("don't go out to concerts! don't eat a salad in a restaurant!") that my oncologist found laughable. A lot of readers might be unduly frightened by what they read--in fact, some caution is good, but you might worry far too much because of the book's heavy emphasis on the dire. If that's your cup of tea, buy the book; as I said, there are good tidbits. Plus, it's breezy and well organized, and not at all intimidating to use as a reference. But if you take a fairly pragmatic and optimistic view, and if your oncologist does the same, I'd skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My life as a comic strip
As someone with metastatic breast cancer, I felt as though Miriam were writing about my own life. Who knew that those of us with breast cancer had such universal experiences? (Thank you for giving us that awareness, Miriam.) When I suggested to my family that cancer could be funny, they seriously doubted me and my sanity until they read this book. The "which breast?" cartoon made us all hysterical, and made me long to have t-shirt just like the one portrayed in the strip. The book is poignant, irreverant, laugh-out-loud funny, and truer than true.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I just finished this book today, one week after finding out that my metastatic breast cancer has progressed once again. After a very sobering meeting with my oncologist, I'm thinking about reading it again because I need a good laugh right now. I think anyone would enjoy this book, but for those of us living it right now, it's priceless. Don't waste your money on pink ribbons, buy this book and educate yourselves or someone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughing and Crying
If laughter has the power to heal, and there's plenty of reasons to think so, this book should be required reading for cancer patients. Its humor is all the more powerful because it so beautifully reveals the humanity and vulnerability of the author. The ending is sad, as others have noted. After I finished the book, I was afraid to try to find out how Miriam was doing, but then I couldn't help looking her up, as I had come to care about her so much.I recommend her website, [...]. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very informative and easy to understand
I highly suggest this book to anyone with cancer or if your helping someone with cancer. The information is very practical, easy to follow and lets you know that there is way more you can be doing than just what your doctor tells you. great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A common sense approach for the most part
After having two close family members diagnosed with cancer I became very concerned about the nutritional and environmental links to the disease. When someone you love has kidney cancer and the doctors tell you that they don't know why it happened you have a tendency to panic.I set out to learn everything that I could about cancer and possible causes and/or techniques for prevention.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of this genre..Not full of the usual disproven B.S.
Unlike many other books of this type, this book is well-documented and not full of disproven B.S.There is a more famous author who makes claims that various doctors have found "cures" for cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most thorough treatise on the subject
This book does an excellent job of summarizing and organizing all of the work done by Michio Kushi and others over the span of decades working with cancer patients. Though Macrobiotics is based on much Japanese culture, this book is geared to the westernized/American reader so there is very little in the way of cultural chasm to jump over.1-0 out of 5 stars take it with a pinch of salt...
Sadly, both Michio Kushi's wife and one daughter have died of cancer.Being that they were Japanese, the healthiest and longest lived people in the world, this doesn't really speak well for the diet. However, macrobiotics, when taken with common sense, have been known tohelp cancer patients, some say to the extent of "curing" them.Follow your own instincts...and keep in touch with a trusted doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have cancer, this is the diet!
I read the book and am fully convinced of the diet prescribed by Michio.I've just completely switched to a macrobiotics diet and feel healthier and more energetic. My blood pressure is back to normal so is my diabetes.I've read several of his books where there are testimonies of cancer cases where doctors have given up hope and given them months to live, they've survived for years and have proven western medical opinion wrong.Read more

This fascinating book, written by Alan Hobson (a leukemia survivor) and his wife and caregiver, Cecilia Hobson, is a must read for cancer patients and theircaregivers. What helps make this book unique are the analogies Alan makes between his battle with cancer and his three attempts to climb Mt. 1-0 out of 5 stars Uhhh
First off, I think the author forgot to mention that Rife is apparently God of universe in his book, or at least thats the way he is portrayed.Second, why should I have to plunk down 4000 bucks to prove this radio can heal me, maybe you should try showing a couple of people through some free trials.Who is going to support some quack job by giving them $4000 only to find out that it doesnt work?

5-0 out of 5 stars WAKE UP AMERICA, IT'S YOUR HEALTH!!!
It's time for America to wake up to the reality of what is going on around us.Orthodox cancer treatment not only DOESN'T work, but it is killing people!Rife was a genious who was condemned and persecuted for discovering a non-chemical way to knock out virtually every disease known to mankind. We need to be suspicious of WHY Rife was snuffed out rather than being revered as the Humanitarian HERO that he was.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. A. French
Who is this character, Peter Bowditch (from below, no pun intended)? He seems to be talking directly from his armchair, out through his colon.I live, work, breath, and dream within the health-care industry.I have a good feel for this game and its sordid history.I can somewhat grasp the ENORMOUS amounts of money AND personal reputations (ie. ego) at stake. The politics of it all are staggering and simply sickening (figuretively and literally).Enough is enough.I have seen the results from Rife and many other "natural" applications.Even vitamin C, for pete's sake, is an excellent remedy for many things and is supported by shockingly good, "gold standard" scientific studies, many of which date to the 1940s and 50s.Once one can get over the enormity and the obvious implications of the "conspiracy" (I don't use that word lightly here) of modern health-care, then one is logically drawn to ideas and approaches such as Rife's and others. You say you don't "believe" the science and/or physics and/or biochemistry and/or energy behind any of the alternative approaches??Well, pull your head out of your colon and roll up your sleeves Mr. Skeptic, or better yet, put up the money and experiment for yourself because I am fully confident the results will be there, with or without your institutionalised beliefs. This book is a good, honest account of what kind of therapies exist to treat the human condition, which in many ways has been totally compromised by mainstream health-care.As I final note, my vast experience with the ridiculous naysayers has taught me that they all seem to use very similar vernacular for expressing their criticisms of alternative health-care, and these words are almost always:pseudoscience, quack, quackery, cult, voodoo, and anecdotal.Simply coincidence?Seeing these words will almost always alert you to the critic's closed and narrow mindset.Let's hope that no one close to Peter Bowditch gets critically ill because the danger of HIS words will become most apparent. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for......
I found this book to be very depressing and dark. The author kept saying how cancer will haunt you the rest of your life, little hope to escape it, you'll just have to live with it.I've choosen differently, but this book was NOT helpful in my after treatment recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not crazy...
After all my treatments for breast cancer were done, everyone told me i should feel better-but i didn't! My feeling were much worse than i expected after so many months and i'm glad i found and read this book! It helped me understand that it is OK to have lingering fears and emotions and that it is normal-especially months after treatment! Maybe it's because she is a survivor too, that makes this book so great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A blessing for all
For anyone who is facing or has faced the Breast Cancer challenge directly or indirectly ... or if you just want a window into the lives of others facing this challenge ... this book will help show the the way in and the way out. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pays for itself in 10 minutes
This is a fantastic book! It is written extremely positive and will be a "Bible" throughout a cancer ordeal. It is a ray of hope and friend for the lost soul on a solo Cancer journey. It is very well organized and easy to read. It is up-to-date and has many online links that work on the web. It will provide a positive and structured environment to help you make intelligent decisions in healing yourself with or without a doctor's aid. This book taught me more about Cancer than a visit to the Oncologist only after 10 minutes of browsing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge!!!
OK, sorry for the pun, but it's true. Bill Henderson has found a way to provide the best researched PROVEN treatments and CURES for cancers of all shapes and sizes in an easy to read and understand format. While waiting for my doctors to schedule, execute and analyse a biopsy of my neck (prior tests have made them suspect some kind of lymphoma), I started doing some research of my own and stumbled across Bill's fabulous book. I immediately started upping my dosages of some of the supplements I was already taking, and added some others recommended by several of the doctors and scientists mentioned in the book. I also modified my diet somewhat. Within 3 days of starting, the seering and throbbing pain I was experiencing DISAPPEARED! The mass in my neck, what ever it is (still haven't got the results back from the biopsy) softened and shrunk by 20-30%. Within a week, I can now see the shape of my face again (mass now smaller by over 50%!!), and I feel like I am winning my fight already! I am still fine-tuning my protocol based on many of the recommendations in Bill's book, have several supplements on order through discount nutrient providers (all found in the book), and have been constantly reading new material through many of the links provided within the book. It may only seem like 200 pages or so, but with the links to other invaluable sites as well as the newsletter archives on Bill's website, you too can become an "expert" on cancer and alternative treatments in a very short time. And you can keep learning new proven techniques because Bill is contstantly researching and updating his site with the latest and greatest. This book could literally save your life or the life of someone you love. Even if no one you know has cancer, you can learn how to insure that you and your family never get it by reading this book and learning EXACTLY what causes cancer (turns out it's pretty simple!) and how you can make yourself virtually cancer-proof. I only wish I knew this information 3 years ago when my Dad was battling leukemia. Chemo did not save him. Read this book. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ANYONE DEALING WITH CANCER!!!
I must say that Bill has really done his research and has written a book that is a definite wealth of information for the cancer patient and family. This information will not be shared by your run of the mill oncologist!Bill's book will direct you to some of the finest websites that offer alternatives to cure your cancer. Also you will be able to locate Dr's who are willing to work with you when you choose not to go with the cut, burn and poison treatments if you have cancer. The book tells you about lifestyle changes, being healthy eating, exercise and what supplements to take to help cure your cancer. If you are looking for this kind of information and feel lost out there in cyberspace, then you need this VERY helpful guide book of Bills! Thank you Bill for helping so many people!Lynn MillerP.S. Bill also made this book very easy to understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Inspiring & Entertaining!
I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search ofgood health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!5-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched and thought out
Loaded with the latest Research and many years of practical experience, made this book such a beleivable read, a book I can reference and read over and over again, I specifically used a pink highlighter to zoom in on all the important points, which runs rampant without the whole book. If you are a person who wants valid, clear information on how to take care of yourself for the rest of your life whether you have cancer or not, this is the book for you, I healed my cancer fifteen years ago using these principles and there never outdated, like so many diet trends out there!! this is a keeper. Thank you for your hard work, in putting the book together. L.K. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Correct on metaphor; incorrect on mind-body link and HIV causation
Sontag is spot-on in her analysis of metaphors of AIDS: the military metaphors, the latency metaphors, and the plague metaphors. Her observations are keen and insightful in this regard. It is troubling then, that she seems unwilling to follow her own analysis and that she dismisses "psychological" aspects of disease causation in favor of a purely materialist understanding. Does she not realise that the "de-interpretation" of illness metaphors is itself a psychological act that affects patients? How does she reconcile her dismissal of psychological states with the fact that her very own writings on illness and AIDS are themselves psychological and therapeutic?
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Susan
Susan Sontag disparaged the idea that dis-eases are caused by mental states, and her resolutely taking this position illustrates the great and willing blindness of this talented but dis-eased anti-white racist. She had such a beautiful basket of blossoms to offer, and between their leaves and stems crawled poisonous snakes she could not free herself of because she wasn't willing to look in her own basket. Unfortunately her work is forever tainted with her hatred.Sad -

2-0 out of 5 stars this book misses the point
i think Susan Sontag is missing the political nature of illness.as far as i'm concerned there is a culture of blaming the victim in our society that is not limited to medicine.the victim is blamed because the victim has little power.the ill person is blamed because the tobacco companies are powerful, the oil companies are powerful, the sugar companies are powerful, the retail chains are powerful, the manufacturers are powerful, the health insurance companies are powerful and the governments are powerful.they have armies of lawyers to defend them; they have armies of doctors, scientists, and psychiatrists to fabricate pseudo-scientific evidence to support their self interest, but the victim is powerless to defend themselves against blame.this isn't about language, it's about politics of money and power.language is only one of the tools that the powerful use to blame the ill, and victims more generally. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for the tragic elements, a health warning for the rest...
This is a tragic story and for that (and for that alone - in so far as the book is sold as an account of Treya Wilber's lamentable and extremely moving death) it gets five stars. However, the other side of this book is equally lamentable. It is also a desperately cynical and muddled stab at publicising Ken Wilber's ideas via a `soft' title. It stands as the work of a man who uses his wife's death to grandstand, once again well away from any rigorous academic spotlight, his untested `Integral' vision. He tells us that Treya herself wanted this kind of content to be published with personal diaries after her death, but, really...how sickening does the book rapidly become when chapter after chapter is devoted to stating how much of a genius Wilber is alleged to be, or how incisive his ideas are according to himself and the various spiritually biased writers he turns to for validation?Consequently, I have one or two questions, seeing the book is now actually in danger of being turned into a film starring Jennifer Aniston.
5-0 out of 5 stars A mind & spirit opener
Other books may be eye openers, this one opened my mind and spirit. It was recommended to me by a friend who'd read it after his mother died, and I took it up after two recent deaths in my family and to prepare myself to deal with my own mother's severe illness. I found this book not only to be soothing andtruly inspiring, it also provided something I had long sought for without being able to put a name to it - an introduction to perennial philosophy, a starter and a guide on how to to explore and combine Western and Eastern philosophies and religions.

I read this book twice and loved it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr.'s don't always know everything
Ms. Drescher give an honest & straight-forward account of her experience with cancer and the amazing fact that it took 8 doctors before she was finally diagnosed.Good sense of humour, and well-written.Quick reading, too (I'm a slow reader).

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me understand
I read this as my adult daughter has been awaiting the results of her radioactive iodine treatment for cancer that has spread. My daughter also had to try several doctors before she found one who would listen to her, although the diagnosis was fast. A very serious subject, and dealt with by a star whose situation is not ours, but Fran Drescher gave me perspective on another's cancer struggle. I have never seen her tv show or read her other book, but am always looking to read other people's cancer stories to see what we can learn. It validated our searching for information and for answers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Resilience and Hope
Reading this book helped me to understand, in a deeper way, the struggle that so many women go through in losing their hair and the strength that comes along with the struggle in learning to recognize both their inner and outter beauty. I have had female friends of all different ages overcome cancer and am constantly in awe of their resilience and message of hope. This book is an affirmation of all those women. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Synchrometer Science Laboratory Manual
This book is the finest book written by Hulda Clark that goes to the nitty gritty of cleansing the body and chasing out the polutants and invaders. The progress Hulda Clark has done in the field of health in mere 15 years could not be done by Allopaty in hundreds of years.Fantastic job!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate science appetizer
This is the ultimate science appetizer. It is relevant because it holds the key to proper immune support and protection. It is fascinating because it is new turf. This book shows how to be your own toxin detective in the foods you eat and the personal items you use.
