5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer
This book is the one to read if you want to know the details on the Prostate and prostate cancer. Also, its a must read if you think you want to handle it with surgery'

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, accurate and balanced
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I, like many other men, did a great deal of reading (both books and internet sources). One thing you find out quickly is - there's almost too much information out there, and it is vitally important to separate the "wheat" from the "chaff".I read Dr. Walsh's book first, and kept going back to it as I read other material.
3-0 out of 5 stars a gem of the past
tis is a very good overall background provider and 3-4 yrs ago would be a biblehowever it is not up to date and does not contain good info re IMRT(intensive radiation) or robotic surgery( Da Vinci Machine)- it is excellent re diet but needs to be supplemented(or a new edition perhaps) to get the latest on possible procedures, side effects and outcomes ... Editorial Review

At age nine, Lucy Grealy was diagnosed with a potentially terminalcancer. When she returned to school with a third of her jaw removed, shefaced the cruel taunts of classmates. In this strikingly candid memoir, Grealy tells her story of great suffering and remarkable strength without sentimentality and with considerable wit.Vividly portraying the pain of peer rejection and the guilty pleasure of wanting to be special, Grealycaptures with unique insight what it is like as a child and young adult to be torn between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly tobe perfect ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It had Potential...
Avoid this book like the plague.
5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly honest and touching memoir from a real human being
Many reviewers have beautifully reviewed this haunting memoir. I just wanted to add how touched I was by Lucy's struggle, not to be special, but to be normal. Her memoir describes acutely the psychic distress of finding oneself outside the norm in society. Despite Lucy's struggle for acceptance and normalcy, she still displays true wisdom and strength from her "outsider" perspective. Some think her stance toward others is unsympathetic, I found her to be as unflinching in revealing her thoughts and found her level of awareness of herself refreshing, if self-oriented, at times. There is something about standing out in an unwanted way that can create a barrier between us and the rest of the world and perhaps Lucy had a protective barrier that closedher off from others. Who am I to judge, I just stand in awe of the courage she displays time and again.Other reviewersalso criticize Lucy for not overcoming her need for acceptance, or normalcy. I can only thank Lucy for incarnating and being who she was, so honestly, so vulnerably, and for offering us an uncensored, heart-breaking, and ultimately revealing view of her experience of the world. I am sure many will resonate with the experience of being "outcast" and feel we have a friend and supporter in Lucy. Thanks Lucy, for not putting any masks on in your writing but allowing us to see youin your true complexity. I salute you wherever you may be.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Spiral Staircase Revisited
This book was much better written than Karen Armstrong's The Spiral Staircase but it was the same whining and self-pitying all over again. The author had no real feelings about her father's death yet she can't understand how people lack compassion for her deformity. When a woman who had had a mastectomy spoke to her about her own deep feelings of ugliness and loss, she dismisses the other woman's feelings because no one else's suffering can be as great as her own. It seems like she could only think of herself, her own feelings and her complete misery at being "ugly" without the slightest inkling that other people might have feelings and tragedies in their own lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars 23 year survivor
I think this is a great book, now we just need a book on finances and how to plan for lifes events like college, buying a home, and retirement planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars 18 Year Survivor and Counting!!!
I am an 18 year survivor of Osteoganic Sarcoma and I found this book to be one of the best and informative books I've ever read. I read things that I didn't even know about my disease or the long term late effects due to the chemotherapy I received. I will admit, at times it was TOO much information, but it was all factual and there were things that I read that I had to come to term with. I have an appointment at a Late Effects Clinic in a few weeks, and I am eager to get on with the rest of my life. A big Thank You to the authors who took so much time doing research and putting their own blood, sweat and tears into such an awesome project!!! Sincerely, Diane Trautman Smith

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Resource for Survivors!
This book is what every survivor, their parent(s) and thier doctor needs! It is comprehensive and well laid out...I love how I can easily find information on areas of concern I have regarding my son's survival. It has come in handy during follow up appointments to ensure my son is receiving the proper long term care. There is a compact card in the back of the book where all information about the child's treatment can be recorded so the child will have easy to access, concise information regarding their surgeries, chemotherapy drugs, radiation amount and type, etc. I know this will be an indispensible tool for my son as he grows up. I applaud the authors for writing a much-needed book. This book is a MUST-HAVE for EVERY childhood cancer survivor! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should come with diagnosis
This book is essential.I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in late 2003 and was given this book as a gift from a survivor I'd never met and still haven't to date. Because of her thoughtfulness, I was able to better understand, work with my treatment and get well again.I have given my copy away, that copy passed on by the person I gave it to again and I trust again since that time.Another friend of a friend was diagnosed in Florida (I'm in Michigan, my benefactor in California) and this was the first thing I did (after saying a prayer for her).Best Wishes for a speedy and full recovery to any/all who have need for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simonton's "Getting Well"
Book is very informative and offers hope and help.It is far too old and needs to be updated to more current situations but many of the facts remain true and it is still probably the best cancer help book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer
The theme of this book is that with positive expectancy of treatment and the patient's positive outlook, you CAN turn your cancer diagnosis into one of renewal of health. A patient CAN do this!Of the many books we have read, this one is outstanding.Dr. Simonton's book, Getting Well Again, is referenced in other volumes as well. The ideas are concrete, meaningful, and most of all---can be implemented. Positive expectancy is the key theme. We have read and reread its passages many times and have received renewed HOPE and OPTIMISM with every reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Aren't You Reading This Book
Many days and nights I sat with little energy and read and reread chapters from this wonderful book. I have loaned or given copies to friends throughout the years who have been diagnosed with or have been care givers to cancer patients It's written in simple, short chapters which helped me because concentrating for any length of time was difficult. It was a blessing. It's not complicated. It's easy reading and it is so helpful. Please read this book. By the way, I'm cancer free!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Selenium can help prevent and treat cancer
Nutrients can help fight cancer. The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for those who haven't had cancer too...
If you have ever had a difficult time in your life, this is a good book for you.I read this book when I was having a very depressing time, a time where I was not sure I was going to make it out. This book, though, was a gateway for me.Since I don't have cancer, this book didn't inspire me in that way, but it did inspire me.I saw people that had a harder life then I did, and I realized that I would get through, that life would improve for me, and it has. :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love
"Malignant", to hear this word when you or someone you love is diagnosed brings feelings of despair, fear and abandonment. The "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series gives you bits of humanity andmakes you feel hopeful, trusting and accepting. The stories, poems andessays are put together to give to us encouragement.I myself am a 5 yearsurvivor of stage 2 breast cancer and find the pages filled with newbeginnings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!
I purchased this review book and studied it along with the ACR. Most of the information in the book was on the registry except it lacked pathology and there were a few errors when you took the practice tests in the book. You really had to make sure you reviewed the answers.I got a 90 a my mammo registry!! I highly recommend this book!! I was a self study and was not able to attend any conferences so my information came from this book and the ACR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
I used this study guide and found the questions and the style of questions very helpful for the ARRT Exam.I used this Appleton and Lange Study guide along with a guide from an initial mammography training conference and had no trouble passing the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good format, watch the answers carefully.
Overall, the review questions were helpful, but there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the mistakes seemed to be poor proof reading, but many other questions/answers seem to directly contradict the text in the same book. That can be very confusing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be read by everyone!
Fantastic book! If you are at all interested in optimum health and well being or know someone suffering healthwise, this is a must read. It will change your life and the way you look at the food you eat. CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES CAN BE CURED-This book will tell you how. I have recommended it to all my family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gerson Therapy... by Charlotte Gerson
An indispensable aid for those wishing to use the highest cure rate therapy for cancer yet devised. The incredible cures for many degenerative diseases wrought by slight variations of this program are also described in this book. With the recent opening of a Gerson Therapy center in Hawaii, and with the Baja Nutri Care facility in Las Playas de Tijuana, Mexico, what's not to love about this amazing chance to survive the deadly big "C"? With a cure rate under 10% in America, why not go with the Gerson Therapy, with almost ten times the cure rate? This book is logical, orderly, and well thought out. It is not "easy reading," but it is certainly essential reading for our day. The present rate for cancer is five of every twelve alive today. Doctors are already predicting that the rate will increase yet again. Be prepared. Know how to prevent cancer, not just cure it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the only way
I found the book to be a litte condradictory. It acknowledges that other alternative therapies have cured terminal cancer via nutrition life style changes. It later leads you to believe if the protocal is not followed to the letter your cancer will return. This is simply not true. Whole foods is the key and detoxification. I know of a man who dissolved over 50 tumors in his body thru eating more fruits and veggies and coffee enemas and suplimentation of vitamins and minerals not mentioned in this book.He also has not juiced one drop of veggies or fruit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to life after cancer
I'm finding lots of answers to the many questions I have after finishing chemo for Non Hodgkins Lymphoma.Even family members would find this book helpful too. It's reassuring, honest and comforting reading about getting back to "life" after such a life changing event.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book for life after cancer
When you visit the health section of your local bookstore, you'll find a plethora of information about getting through a cancer diagnosis, and very little about how to adjust to life after cancer. As the founder of a cancer support group, I believe that survivors are leaving our hospitals in droves - unprepared.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book was critical to my recovery
I can't remember who suggested this book to me while I was recovering from surgery and radiation for liposarcoma in my leg. It must've been someone from my online support group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives.
Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."
4-0 out of 5 stars Selenium helps fight breast cancer and other cancers as well
The nutrient, selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to be effective in fighting breast cancer. Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet containing 200 microgram (mcg) of selenium for seven years had only half the death rate from cancer as a similarly large group of people who received yeast tablets containing no selenium. The reduction in death rate was higher for breast cancer than for certain other forms of cancer. The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

First of all Anne would have died 10 years or more ago if she didn't do what she did.The reason she died was because Conventional medicine damaged her liver to the point that nothing would help. The fact that she got 10 glorious years is a miracle in itself. 2ndly, What rock are you living under. Anne death was publicized. I heard about it right after it happened.

When all is said and done, perhaps the best way to rate this book is to realize that the author with cancer who originally co-authored this first book, Anne Fraham, eventually died, which I did not realize until after I had read the book. Many people, like me, probably don't know that, because it isn't highly published anywhere. I mean - if you are a family member and you are still taking in royalties off the book, would YOU publish that fact very openly, or sort of "mention it" maybe in a discreet note somewhere? When an author writes about a treatment that extends their life, that is well and good for them, but it shouldn't be a "temporary fix", and it shouldn't be forgotten that this case reminds me of that of Neil Ruzic who wrote the book, "Racing to a Cure." It is sad that Neil died from his cancer not long after he wrote his book - so much for his treatment "remedy." Yet Neil's book is still on the market and most people who buy the book have no idea that Neil died. Now - if thousands of people were reading "The Cancer Battle Plan," and getting completely cured, that would be something worth reviewing, but as far as I am concerned, even if the author extends their life by their "treatment," their death makes a real STATEMENT about how successful they really are! I am all for cleansing, but I am not for the coffee enemas. I believe there are too many other excellent natural ways to cleanse the colon efficiently without coffee enemas. For one thing, if you use the coffee enemas without using decaffeinated coffee (Ann recommended caffeinated coffee!), there are so many people with heart irregularities that this can be very dangerous for them to consume caffeine in any form that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and affect the heart! This can be deadly for them! There are also at least a dozen other books newly on the market fighting cancer from an alternative health standpoint, which outrank this one a hundred to one and their authors are still very much alive and well! Common sense tells me, after reading this book, I'm shelving it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for your bookshelf
If you sign out breast biopsies, then you really must own Rosen's Breast Pathology AND this small altas. It's now in it's second edition and is meant to be used in conjuction with the larger textbook. The writing, as with all of Rosen's material, is clear, and the pictures range from good to excellent. No real drawbacks, and it's a book that will be used very often in any busy practice. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Breast cancer is never completely over," says author Marisa C. Weiss, M.D., a radiation oncologist. Even when x-rays are negative and doctors proclaim remission, breast-cancer survivors often suffer from continued health problems along with elevated levels of anxiety, and the specter of recurrence is just a small part of the picture.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated
There's a lot of good information in this book...for 1998.Breast cancer treatment and survival has come a long way since then; this book should reflect that. Also, was surprised at how much stuff they covered that *wasn't* post-treatment.A lot of what this book covered was in other books for the newly diagnosed and those going through treatment -- I wanted more about actual life after treatment, not more recaps of breast reconstruction.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best for Metastatic Information!
I've been reading and researching breast cancer on and off for 4 years.A year ago my breast cancer metasticized, and it's hard to find honest information (or any information) about metastatic disease. The title to this book is misleading, because it doesn't mention the fantastic, updated metastatic information. It is by far the most comprehensive, readable treatment of this I've found.I'm ordering several copies to give away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comforting guide in the privacy of your home!
My daughter was sitting with my husband and myself in the office of myradiation oncologist. She spotted "Living Beyond Breast Cancer"on the bookshelf. She like myself was so lost when we found I had breastcancer.Neither my husband, daughter or myself knew what was going tohappen. She began reading the book and could not put it down. When theDr. came into the room he made comment about the book she was reading.Shewas so elated with all the facts, which are printed in such simple languagethat we could understand. The Dr. saw her enthusiasm and offered for herto take it home.Since that time I have not been able to seperate myselffrom this book.As I progress thru my mastectomy, I find new items ofinterest. It also helped me understand what my partner, my husband, wasfeeling.I read one of the chapters to him, at our breakfast table.Wesat and cried and agreed that the way he was feeling was as written in thebook.I never realized just how much he hurt and how comforting it was tohim to know there was a book written that could tell me how he felt.Read more

Editorial Review

When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
The book presents recipes attractively.I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents.Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars a treat for the eyes

3-0 out of 5 stars An important word on the "American Council for Science and Health"
I have not read Arnot's book. However, to those reviewers who cite the attacks made against the book by the American Council for Science and Health, you need to know the shaky credentials and corporate sponsorship of that particular organization.Go to their website: there you will find articles saying that pesticide in foods poses absolutely no health risks, and articles saying that vending machines in schools should be allowed to continue selling soda and a whole range of snack foods in the interests of a free market system. This Council appears to be nothing more than a highly-financed mouthpiece for various corporate interests. I have been highly skeptical of any of their "scientific" claims for a while now. Finding out that they do not support Arno's book actually makes me more interested in checking it out myself, so I have ordered a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for those dealing with breast cancer
Having just been diagnosed with a recurrence of non-metastatic breast cancer, I decided to seek out resources that might help me make the lifestyle changes I failed to make after my first episode, in order to prevent yet another recurrence. Since I'm in a doctoral program, I decided to take a course on alternative medicine and immediately began reading the texts, which led to this excellent resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better now, than later...
First, every woman I care about, my friends, sisters, mom, etc., will be getting a copy of this book as their next gift from me! Dr. Arnot gives example after example of medical research PLUS lifestyles of women all over the world showing better health than most Americans, revealing what scientists believe attribute to it! Unless every word and Doctor,or school referenced are all liars, this book is a LIFESAVE.Scientist have come a long way. They don't just say "don't eat this, but eat that" and you'll be fine. That's too simple. They know much more than that now and we need to take advantage of that. If they say breakfast is important, always eat SOMETHING,than that's what we should do! Ifyou want a fiction book,or an easy fix, or if you want to ramble about how research in mice has little to do with humans, than keep fooling yourself. I'll take all the help a reputable doctor or scientist or medical college wants to give to prolong my life AND give me GOOD HEALTH at the same time. Many of us ae having our children late in life.My youngest was born when I was 38.I've got to live a long time to be there for her.My mother had me at 18!She's 70 now and I love having her around.I trust there is nothing in Dr. Bob's book that will hurt me -- but that will only help me. Should I still go to the doctor?OF COURSE!!!I have been getting yearly mamograms for 15 years, and only this year did I have a a small spot.I'm to get another exam in May 2002.I'm worried. They think it's nothing and say MOST OF THEM ARE BENIGN. What if i'm one of those woman not so lucky? I am not sure about Soy Isoflavones (the dosage) although Dr. Bob talks about it.Thanks, and KEEP READING!!... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
Three months ago I took a PSA test and it came back 8.79 ng/mL. I had no other symptoms and started looking for an alternative to what the doctors wanted me to do. I found this book and followed the instructions which include a strict diet, exercise and 20+ vitamins. I took another PSA test two weeks ago and just received the results today: 4.5 ng/mL. Still elevated but quite a remarkable improvement in just two months. It will be interesting to see what it will be six months or a year from now.
