5-0 out of 5 stars Eyeopening, precise, well-researched
As a nurse who worked with patients through each step of treatment -- and as a breast cancer survivor myself -- I found this book to be invaluable. It is a must-have for anyone being treated for breast cancer and building a library to understand it better. That's not just because it answers many important questions but because it raises some that scientists still need to answer, especially about environmental links, links to foods, genes, obesity, etc. We need more answers in each of those areas. A chapter is devoted to breast cancer myths, which is very eyeopening. It discusses many common beliefs dangled out there as facts, which turn out not to have much science behind them, like if you eat a lot of broccoli you won't get breast cancer. For some reason many people, some health care professionals included, believe this stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive
My oncologist had two of these books on his desk and gave me one the day I was told about my diagnosis. I started thumbing through it when I got home and could not put it down because with each page, all of the questions I had about this terrifying disease were being answered. I wound up reading it from cover to cover in two days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!
I discovered this book two years after having a "serous ovarian neoplasm of low-level malignant potential" removed. This book explained things so much better than my doctors did, and explained why some of the things that I went through without understanding were done.I wish so much that I had had this book when I was diagnosed; it would have been very comforting to have the info that the book gives.
1-0 out of 5 stars Several errors - not current
I tried some of the websites in the book and they were not valid and other erroneous things that were not current. I was hoping for more information on what I could do for ovarian cancer from a natural avenue, rather than simply following the crowd. I was able to find the information I was looking for in another book, so this one is on a shelf gathering dust where it belongs. This book is okay if you are looking for everything conventional, but the same info is available everywhere on the internet, so it was a waste of my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars comment from the author
I am glad that women and their families are finding the book helpful. Most of the information remains current, almost three years after publication. However, there have been some developments in treatment, so I encourage everyone to supplement the book with their own research (National Cancer Institute, etc.) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed:(
I read only half the book and was very uninterested. The whole frist part is just letters she received that are light-hearted but not funny.(I am a cancer patient myself) I have read funnier, moreup-lifting books.Barbara Johnson has a great cancer book that I loved and laughed so many times out loud.I left this book at the cancer center for someone else to hopefully find hope in.

5-0 out of 5 stars A uniquely inspiring person and story
I've had the extraordinary privilege to meet the author and read her books.I am not a cancer patient, but I know an extraordinary person when I meet one because it rarely happens.Anyone-sufferer or not-will be deeply inspired by Christine's story, her spirit, her will, and her example. She can change your life. And while that is occuring, she makes sure that you, as she urges everyone daily, "don't forget to laugh."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice for a Bad Situation
My mother is currently going thru chemotherapy and this book is incredibly helpful. Nancy Bruning, the author, is herself a breast cancer survivor and went thru chemotherapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars The basic information book for all cancer patients.
Bruning covers aspects of curing Cancer that no one is prepared for, in a factual, non-pitying way. This book is a departure from many "I Survived the Big C" books that gloss over how to contend with symptoms and side effects that do have remedies.5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful tool for those facing chemo.
I have purchased several copies of this book to give to friends who were facing or coping with chemo. All of them thanked me and said that it helped them so much.I am buying another one today, sadly, for yet another friend. It tells you things that your doctor may not and let you know how to help yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book; Great Doctor
This book is a must for any melanoma patient or their family.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must!
If you've been diagnosed with melanoma, this book is a must! The day I was told I had cancer, I was so frightened and confused. The doctor asked me if I had any questions, and I couldn't think of anything! The word "cancer!" just kept going through my mind. After reading this book, I was able to clear my head and not only ask questions, but ask the "right" questions. The only thing it didn't cover is the fact that it is sometimes difficult to diagnose melanoma. Sometimes the results are not black or white...there are also grey areas. But all in all, this book was extremely informative. Highly recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes...
I am at high risk for skin cancer being pale skinned, light eyed, blonde and living in San Diego. I never knew it was better for me to use sunblock and stay out of the sun instead of trying to go for a base tan, especially in a tanner. Tans only have a suncreen of SPF 5, come to find out. And even people with naturally dark skin need to wear sunblock because they can get skin cancer too, often in parts that go unchecked due to the fact people think their darker skin isn't at risk! These are two of the many "myths" brought out in this guide. Everyone should read this book so they know the facts about these horrible diseases.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Opportunity
After having read all of Marion Woodman's books and participating in two workshops at Esalen and one with Robert Bly in San Francisco, it was very exciting for me to be able to read this very intimate personal journal of her own spiritual and psychological process. In her lectures this wonderful woman is so open and honest and present and she is even more so in this book.It took my breath away to travel this moving difficult path with her.If you know Marion and love her this book is a must read.If you don't have any experience with her or Jungian theory I think it will be hard to follow since much of it assumes familiarity with her theories of the conscious feminine. She is a deep thinker with complex feelings. She models for us how to practice what she teaches. The book is also filled with her favorite poems and passages from the writers who inspired her teaching career before she went to Zurich to study Jung. There are also glimpses into her long and fruitful marriage to Ross and even a postscript from him to the reader.I am waiting for her book on the demon lover which she alludes to in this book. I love this book. There is much to savor and learn on many dimensions.

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful and profound
marion woodman is unequaled in her ability to see life, in all it's complicated paradoxes, and articulate her journey through it... i find her latest book to be compelling as she shares her personal story with compassion and rigorous honesty... just knowing that she has walked her own path inspires me to continue to walk mine... if you've ever wondered if someone walks ahead of you then read 'bone' and know she is .... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars not only for cancer people butalso for heathly ordinary who wants to get the max out of life.
I dont understand somthing, why all the time people are saying that this is for people figuting cancer? LeShan in his own words says that cancer is a normal process that is heppening in every body 24 hours a day, it is only the immune system that isnt able to fight the process and as a result what we are calling a diease excist.
1-0 out of 5 stars Is this book intended as a joke?
I've had cancer (and recurrances) for 7 years, and I've read every book on every aspect of the subject, and this book is the absolute worst I've yet to come across.LeShan writes a weird mixture of vintage voodoo and goofy "new-age" hype.LeShan's lethal psychobabble can be literally deadly as he lures frightened, newly-diagnosed cancer patients into drinking oceans of green tea while while scaring them away from conventional, proven treatment.Avoid this book, and the others like it, unless you want a good laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring - entertaining - wonderful
LeShan's message is simple -- put your life before your illness. For years, he helped people with cancer to live the lives they wanted to live, to "sing their own song" as he puts it.These people frequently recovered from cancer in the process of working on their lives.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide for a Difficult path
I had received an early warning sign. The possibilty existed that I had prostate cancer, a disease that killed my father. In my doctor's office was a book he had written entitled "The Complete Prostate Book". I obtained a copy of the book from Amazon.com so as to study the options available to me. Some months later my cancer was confirmed and I was well prepared to make a decision on my behalf.

Editorial Review

Serving as doctor to the Americans "wintering over" at the South Pole in 1999, Jerri Nielsen made headlines when she discovered a lump in her breast that a self-administered biopsy revealed to be an aggressive, fast-growing cancer. No flights in or out of Antarctica are possible during the continent's long winter, and Nielsen's account of giving herself chemotherapy while she and her fellow "Polies" waited for the weather to break is even more gripping than the news reports at the time. She's candid about her pain and fear; the media battle waged by her embittered ex-husband makes her ordeal even more challenging. Interestingly enough, however, this high drama does not overshadow Nielsen's deeper narrative of a woman who came "to the Ice" seeking new meaning in a life shattered by divorce and estrangement from her children. In the back-to-basics world of Antarctic medicine, with outdated equipment, few supplies, and no assistants, she rediscovered her vocation as a doctor, free from the imperatives of corporate-directed medicine. More importantly, Nielsen found spiritual solace in the world's most extreme environment, where she was "introduced slowly to the notion of giving more than you have and using less than you need ... of knowing that all you really own are your own thoughts." She makes the glories of the Pole so palpable that, by the end, readers will not even be surprised when she signs an e-mail to her family, "from the wonderful Ice." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and Beautiful, not gruesome.
This book was a fascinating portrait of the American South Pole Station and the people who winter over there. It is rich with details that one would never have thought of, like the difficulty of contacting the outside world when the communications satellite only peeks over the horizon for a brief time each day.All the people at the station are portrayed as exceptional, (maybe eccentric), strong, very human people who survive in part because of the great love and respect with which they treat each other--not to mention a strong sense of humor!Really inspiring.Made me want to go there myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where Life and Death Meet the Ice
"Ice Bound" is three stories that come together to create one indelible experience: a woman's struggle and escape from an abusive marriage, a travel adventure to the South Pole, and a life and death fight against cancer. Dr. Jerri Nielsen lived all three of these stories and writes about how they merged into one phenomenal journey.
3-0 out of 5 stars What Coulda Been Great Turned Out Just Good...
Dr. Jerri Nielsen's trek to the South Pole would have been filled with danger no matter what...most of the people that head down there must have a few screws loose to want to spend a year in complete darkness, with extremely cold temperatures, only to lose (in part) their social skills, their memories, and their sanity. What makes her story somewhat extraordinary is the fact that as the only trained medical professional 'wintering over' at the South Pole, she diagnosed and was forced to treat her own breast cancer with a small untrained support staff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best picture book about parental cancer
Many children's books about cancer in a parent treat it as movie disease: a convenient way to introduce mortality. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed a way to let my children know what they could expect as far as my therapy, and let them know what might happen emotionally.5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!
I go to school at Village Elementry in Coronado.Adrienne and Abigail are the cusins of a kid in my class named Paul. They got to come to our school and read the book to us.I think it was very good.It really is based on a true story! The book was about there mom who had breast cancer. They even wrote a hat song in the story!I give the book two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Publisher:
When Abigail and Adrienne's mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. But when the girls couldn't find any books that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they wrote one themselves.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect resource to win the war against cancer!!!!
Awesome book!!Very complete, simple to follow, and thorough...a perfect resource for anyone struggling with cancer and overwhelmed by how and where to get the right information to win this battle in a healthy, easy to follow,non-toxic, and cost-effective manner. The part about prayer and healing is very important.Trusting in a Power greater than yourself to win this battle for you is very EMPOWERING because unlike us,God has no limitations.Using these methods my breast cancer was cured w/o chemotherapy or radiation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still going strong!
I am now going on 14 months post colon cancer surgery with a clean bill of health! I am using this book for guidance and details on what to eat and how to keep my immunity up and prevent a recurrence. The information in this book has been a lifeline for me. I can't recommend it enough (and do so every chance I get)- it's exceptional! The details in every chapter and the way the information is presented on exactly what I need to do for the type cancer I had is amazing. I am thankful there are nurses out there who believe in alternative steps for cancer care, because this is one book I'd have been lost without.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical and helpful
I was stressed to the max when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I went through so many web sites and books on cancer, I was totally confused about what to do. A friend loaned this book to me and I'm putting several of the guidelines and suggestions into a workable daily program that I can help my dad to follow. This uncomplicated, easy-to-follow cancer book has been a lifesaver for me. I've since found an alternative doctor who does the vitamin IVs and we are also seriously considering either ukrain or antineoplastons. At least, now we know there really are a lot of choices for us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for cancer patients and loved ones
When I was a happy and healthy 39 years old, I abruptly became the first cancer patient I'd known, with a stage III colorectal cancer. Once diagnosed, I put together the best medical team I could. Then I found myself with many equally crucial needs for help as I entered the strange and uniquely personal terrain of my cancer experiences. How will I get through this? What does this cancer mean for my life? Journey Through Cancer provided excellent questions, stories, and tools that helped strengthen and enrich my ability to navigate through cancer. I found Journey Through Cancer at the library, and it was the sole book I found that understood that cancer patients need more than prescriptions for treatment, diet and attitude. Journey Through Cancer coaches readers through a process of discovering their own best responses to the unique impacts of cancer on our lives. For cancer patients and their loved ones, this is a must-read book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, compelling reading
My father is recovering from his second brain surgery in two months, and will soon begin adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy. I've been looking for information for him on what he can do to help the healing process from the inside. I recently checked this book out from my local library along with five others. I returned the other four, and haven't put this one down.5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
Dr. Geffen's book, A Journey through Cancer, was a revelation to me, because it showed me how MY participation in the healing process was vital to the outcome of the cancerous condition that had arisen in my body.Good as the doctors and nurses were, I soon discovered that they were most willing to treat my symptoms, that is the outer reality, but there was no inclination whatsoever to address the inner reality, that is the spiritual and emotional aspects of the patient. In most oncology centers, as far as I can see, the holistic approach is practically unknown, to all intents and purposes.Read more
