4-0 out of 5 stars Better textbook than prior years
This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good all around Beauty School book
Most of the chapters are well written and understandable.I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New and cheaper spin on skincare and looking your best :-)
This truly is a book for everyone.Like a reviewer says below, it is for guys too. When you think about it, skin is skin whether it's on a male or female and everyone needs to take care of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy Program that shows RESULTS!!!
I am now in week 5 of this very fun and easy camp. I've been trying it out with some friends at work and we are all seeing results. I think in the first week I saw major changes following Dr. Loretta's advice of changing my pillow case and my detergent. I have had way fewer blemishes and cut out some acne products that were actually doing more harm than good in the redness department. I am highly recommending this book to EVERYONE! It is truly fabulous and even the adorable cover makes me smile (people have asked me why I look so happy and bright the past few days!). Hats off to Dr. Loretta for writing such a helpful manual for navigating the cosmetics world!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Men
Gentlemen out there, this message is for you. Don't be fooled by the pink cover, there's lots of great insight for us. As a man, I never thought much about taking care of my skin. But after reading through this powerful book, I realized what a difference a few simple, easy steps can make--and how quickly I can see results. My girlfriend thinks so, too! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and missleading
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.4-0 out of 5 stars Great text!
This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars So you want to learn about skin care, eh?
I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and suit for worldwide reader
Why I choose the word "Worldwide Reader"? I got this book in UK edition which I doubt that if it has any differences from the US edition. Anyway, I have to say that this book is one of a kind that it is well writen, easy to understand and really simplify all the science thing which some make it so hard and too redundant to understant. What impress me most is the selection and cases provide. Being an Asian reader, most of the time, I find books with only US or EU product recommended, which sometimes I find they are not as effective or as good as products from the Asian original (not to mention that it's very hard to find), but that doesn't happen with this book. The author impress me with Asian cases and even recommend some Asian brand product, which is easier to find and that I've been using and yet found it really effective and good to my skin (so I know that the product she recommended is really work).

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help your skin care regimine
Baumann has put together a book that will help you find how to take care of your skin the best that you can.I like that she spends time giving you 4 different tests so you can see what type of skin you have. These tests are better than the dry, oily, and normal skin types that we all typically classify our skin.Using these more sophisticated tests you can better assess your skin.
2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas, but advice was lacking
I bought this book in desperation to try and improve my acne-prone skin. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and I was excited to see what the book would tell me. I bought it, read it, and followed the product advice for my skin-type, using the products exactly as she suggested. Within a week, my skin was 80% worse. I had pimples all over my forehead and chin, and my skin was dry and peeling. I continued to use the products and to get the same results for about a month before I gave it up. It turns out that one of the products she listed as her favorite for my skin type was full of acne and irritation causing chemicals. This book is mostly well-written and interesting, with some good healthy habbit advice, but be careful with the products suggested. I got the impression that she didn't really try them, or do any real research on them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An informed and informative addition
Enhanced with the inclusion of 14 color photographs, 2 color maps, 36 black/white photographs, and 13 line drawn illustrations, "Skin: A Natural History" by Nina G. Jablonski (Head of the Department of Anthropology at The California Academy of Sciences) is a thoroughly "reader friendly" and scholarly introduction to the biological and cultural functions of human skin. "Skin" addresses such questions and issues as how and when human skin came to look, fell, and function as we know it today; why we turn pale when anxious but red when we are embarrassed or angry; why touch is one of the fundamentally important senses of the body and relates to every aspect of human life; what is the real purpose of fingerprints; skin as a canvas for self-expression; the effects of aging, environmental stress, insect bites, burns, and diseases upon skin; advancing medical technologies relevant to skin issues, and so much more. Surveying more than 300-million-years of evolutionary development as it relates to the skin of homo sapiens, "Skin" addresses the critical role skin plays in human health (including processing sunlight for Vitamin D), the role of melanin in protecting us from the sun's rays, and the advances toward to the creation of artificial skin, gene therapies, reversing the aging process of skin, and other fascinating issues related to our skin. "Skin: A Natural History" is an informed and informative addition to medical school, academic library, and Anthropological Studies collections, as well as a very highly recommended study for non-specialist general readers with an interest in the biology and sociology of skin issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars They Work!
These exercises work. No question about it - they really work. I'm 40 and was starting to notice the old age droop in my cheek and eye muscles as well as the characteristic bulge from untoned tongue muscles. Within one week of doing these exercises I noticed significant improvement. The cheek droop line is tightening up and receding. The muscles of my eyes and forehead have tightened up and lifted again. What's more, unlike with Carol Maggio's book, these exercises gave me a way to do these exercises without creating new wrinkles - a big reason why I stopped the exercises from Maggio's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, usable instructions!
In this book I found what I was looking for. It has excellent pictures, clear instructions, explanation of how our face ages, specific exercises for the different areas of the face, and the goal of each exercise. I especially like using my "will" to get my face muscles to move. Although I don't do the exercises consistently every day, I see progress anyway. I was able to tighten my cheek muscles so that my cheek dimple, which had sort of slid down toward my jaw, is now higher on my face. Cute! There are some exercises that I can do at my desk at work, which I like. Great book for those who want to know WHY the exercise works.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This book was a huge disappointment. It was very basic and very vague. For example, it would tell you to shape the brow to make their face look longer or shorter, but it wouldn't tell you how to shape the brow in order to do that. All the pictures were small, in black and white, and it was hard to see any detail.I kept on reading on, hoping that I was going to get to the good stuff, but the good stuff never came.I truly felt like I learned nothing and it was supposed to be an instructional book.A waste of money.I was debating returning it, but it doesn't seem worth it to go to the post office and have to pay for shipping it back.

I just got this book. Thought I'd try it for prevention. I don't have any wrinkles or sagging yet. One thing I noticed that made me very leery: The people shown in the before and after pictures are wearing the exact same clothing, including accessories. The pictures were supposedly taken 7 days apart. I e-mailed the company and asked about this; I told them it made me think some Photoshop had been used. I was told they purposely had the models wear the same clothes and makeup. Ummm...OK. Also, the instructional pictures in this book don't really show you anything. In fact, most of the sequential photos are identical. I asked about this too, and I was told to buy the DVD. Ummm...OK.

I cant believe how incredible 15 min. a day can change your life. I work out 1 hr. a day in the gym and never had as many compliments as I do now since I started doing the Facercise program. People say I look younger and have a smoother face . Also my skin color is more vibrant with a healthy glow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Textbook or Reference for someone on the beginning.
I didn't buy this book and I'm glad I didn't. I'm not much of a textbook reader and this is definitely it. Contains basic details about things you should know but if you're really into skincare and have read too many books before this one, this is not the book for you. It should be for someone on the Skin Care 101 or someone looking for a reference book. So bad coz I'd really want to like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book and good products
I saw her on the PBS special, read the reviews of this book on Amazon.com, and bought the most expensive PBS package which included this book, some of her products, and DVD. I felt her book did have useful information in it, although I was personally disapointed that she did not recommend a specific solution for the dark undereye circles I suffer from. What was most interesting in her book was that she explains how the cosmetic companies work, and how it is that even though they are including the latest ingredients in their products, their products still wind up ineffective due to being present in amounts to low to do anything. Also of interest is that she does recommend products of *other* companies; not just her own products. She sincerely seems like she wants to help everyone stop the aging of their skin.Personally, I have suffered from female late onset adult cystic acne, for which I took Accutane about 7 years ago. The Accutane effect has somewhat worn off and I do have cystic acne from time to time. I can honestly say that I think her products have made my skin feel the best of any cleanser that I have used to date. My skin has felt more consistently soft. It has not solved my acne problem, but I suspect that it has helped. I have also had a couple microdermobrasions and a micropeel this year, and I do believe that this has helped with some fine lines and helped to diminish the lingering red marks from acne.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Excited to Find Dr. Denese
I just saw Dr. Denese on PBS and ran here to buy her book.EVERYTHING she said correlated directly with what I represent being an Arbonne representative.I was so excited to see corroboration with yet another skin care expert (Dr. Perricone being the first) that everything Arbonne uses in their anti-aging line truly are the best ingredients available, even down to the peptides in the RE9 line and the CoQ10 in the supplement lines. And ESPECIALLY the advice of avoiding petreleum based products. You don't see that too often elsewhere, and it's is vital information - you have to check labels to make sure there aren't petroleum products in your skin care (unless you use Arbonne of course, because we never use petroleum products).Mineral oil (aka baby oil) is the main petroleum product used in 90% of skin care, yet it actually can contribute to the aging of the skin.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, Fabulous Skin Care Line
I bought this book after watching the PBS special and buying her defense day cream (SPF 30) and her amazing exfoliating facial pads. Both products are wonderful. As I finish up the current line of cosmetics I am using, I am moving into her skin care line.

I purchased Facebuilder on a whim.Actually, I was turning 50 and started to see an older face staring me back in the mirror.Boy was I was looking tired! So I got the book and the DVD to go along with it.I practiced the exercises for 3 weeks and I gotta tell ya - I am a new man today! My face looks more energized, my eyes are wide open and my jaw looks toned an strong.Thank you Carole -- and you are such a hottie!

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of irrelevant information
Only about 30% of the book contains information about the exercises and related questions. The rest of time the author keeps on telling how wonderful the Facebuilder program is.

I own a aesthetic and plastic surgery center in Scottsdale, Arizona.Several of my patients are men, I encourage a great deal of these patients to do "Facebuilder", in just 7 minutes a day these patients are able to dramatically tone their face.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip-off
This book is a rip-off. If you want simple, easy recipes to follow, don't buy this book. This book gives a lot of useless information and is poorly written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, a bit confusing
I read this book countless times trying to absorb the processes before I began. I was a bit intimidated, but was that way with CP soaping as well, so knew it was all about "diving in". I've tried two batches of the alcohol method and they were extremely thin. After boiling the soap down for a whole day it got thick, but then crystals started appearing the next day. I probably put too much borax in, but don't really know since I messed so much with the recipe trying to first melt the soap completely (it says if doesn't dissolve it's too concentrated) then thickening it up (then it was like water). Just made my second batch and it's sitting there, thin as can be at 40% soap, with the maximum recommended Borax. I hope to write a better review with a successful batch.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not practical
After making cold process soap for several several years, and working in product development for a major soap company, I must say that this book is interesting, but not very practical and certainly confusing.I suppose I need more science to really understand this process.I found the soap to be very drying, with a "fat" smell that was really hard to cover. Also, the shelf life was not very long. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook on makeupI've ever seen
I think people like to bag this book simply because Cindy Crawford wrote it.It's like "oh, she's a model, professionals do her makeup and she has to be too dumb to write anything worthwhile anyway".Actually this is the best book I've ever seen on makeup and the one I'd pick above any other to recommend to anyone and I'm a qualified makeup artist myself.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I love this book! I think because Cindy Crawford has so much experience with the world of beauty that she cuts through all the bull, and gets to basic stuff if you want to wear make-up but do not want to look like a floozy. Plus, she gives great tips on buying makeup, using makeup, etc. She gives unvarnished but very helpful advice. It is the best book I have seen on beauty tips. Plus the pictures and silver cover are cool too. I am surprised it is not on shelves anymore. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to makeup.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for basic instruction
this book is good if you want to learn the basics of makeup use. crawford tells you how to apply, what to apply with, what to apply on, what to buy, etc...all the basics. the color tear sheet in the back is good to take when going shopping--it gives handy tips on picking the right products. as other reviewers have said, the pictures tend to be more glamour shots than instruction, but the photos of the actual makeup products and tools are good. If you are looking for a basic instruction book, this is good. If you already know the basics, you maybe should look elsewhere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect)

5-0 out of 5 stars No other book is as good
I think the biggest complaint or criticism of Dr. Perricone's recommendations is the excessive cost of supplements and creams. With regard to the supplements, Dr. Perricone gives recommendations on the vitamins and supplements you should take. I spent some time looking at all the ingredients listed and realized that you can get those same supplements, vitamins, and minerals at your local health food / vitamin store GNC carries a lot of them get DMAE here and so does Trader Joe's you can get the Complete EFA essential fatty acids, Alpha Lipoic Acid, but does not have DMAE, and Costco good price for CoEnzyme Q10! The prices are much more reasonable. In fact, on the nvperricone website, the vitamin packets list all the ingredients and the amount of product included in the packets. In his book, he makes dosage recommendations too. I hope this helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book
I became interested in Dr. Perricone theory once I saw him on PBS over a year ago. He was convincing enough to make me, old sceptic, get his book and follow his advice... I recommend The Perricone Promise to anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle and have younger looking skin. It is actually a continuation of the idea presented in his previous book Perricone Prescription.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Is Beautiful
This book starts with the premise that everyone has unique qualities that are beautiful.Rather than expend large sums of money, suffer the pain and risks and possible dissatisfaction of permanent surgical options, the author suggests using makeup. Sharing techniques she honed as a professional make-up artist, the author takes regular people, wrinkles and all, and transforms them. Each step is photographed and described in the text and the make-overs are impressive. The models include the author, her family and friends and she addresses everything from covering tattoos and age spots to enhancing the eyes, straigthening the nose and enhancing the bust line.
3-0 out of 5 stars still nothing that new
I bought this book for the purpose of gaining new and insightful makeup tricks and tips. I didn't find them in this book. I own many makeup books and have learned many techniques over the years. Unfortunately this book didn't really impress me. Every make-up book explains what foundation is and why you need to pluck your brows, but I need something new! I wouldn't recommend it if you own at least one of the popular makeup books

3-0 out of 5 stars not for everyday looks
i enjoyed reading through the book once....it was "interesting" but it's not something i would constantly refer back to because i felt the makeup was too heavy and the "tricks" were too over the top...BUT if you work in a business where you MUST look different say for photos or whatever then this would be helpful. i personally have adopted more of a "take what you have and work with it stance" so i would never pile on this much make-up for the sake of appearing different. it's not a bad book just not something i'd use for everyday or really even special occasion good looks...the content of this book would have been great as a tv program you watch once then move on with your life. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for new soapmakers.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to make soap. After reading the book, I was hesitant with attempting to make soap since the author made it sound so complicated. (It took reading several other soapmaking books to get up the courage.)I use it more as a guide/advice book rather than a book for soapmaking recipes.

2-0 out of 5 stars dissapointing
The book gives great information on the basic ingredients for lotions , but theres no "SIMPLE beginners recipe" in here, except perhaps at the end in the "Beauty Food" chapter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting recipes, but...
As the owner of a home-based Bath and Body Products business, I am always on the look out for new recipes to try, adapt, etc.Although there are some fabulous sounding recipes in this book, the use of hydrosols, Sea Berry and Rose Hip Seed Co2 (had never heard of them before, ever) make them way too complicated and expensive for someone who just wants to learn how to put together some simple cosmetics at home. Some of the ingredients, waxes in particular, I'd never even heard of.Perhaps someone living in the U.S. would have an easier time acquiring the "exotics," but my excellent Canadian suppliers do not sell them.I also am not keen on her use of Borax in recipes as it can be a sensitizer for some people and there are gentler preservatives on the market one can use.I can't say I'm completely disappointed, but a strong word of caution to those thinking that they'll find easy "first timer" recipes in here -- they won't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some New and Wondrful Recipes
I've read dozens of books over the years that use the same types of natural ingredients.Donna Maria has uncovered and made available the newest aromatheraputic technologies for the home nuetricutical maker. Some folks have had trouble locating ingredients perhaps like CO2 extracts, hydrosols, and waxes. In the years since the book was first published, these ingredients flourish on the internet...there's not one I haven't been able to find.I'm so excited to have a new direction to experiment with for facial and body preparations.Read more
