5-0 out of 5 stars I am Impressed
Great read. This author knows curly hair. She meticulously addresses some of curly heads major concerns and offers practical solutions. She even gives homemade recipes for hair products. I read this book in one day as I did A. Dickey's book, it was filled with great and accurate information.I compared the books to eachother and to what I know already and conclude these are writers that know their business - hair. What I love most is being able to learn new things, both Massey and Dickey make this possible.Worth every dollar and star!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed results
I have loose curly hair that tends to be on the dry side.I found that I had to modify the authors advice to get the desired results.I have psoriasis on my scalp and not using shampoo didn't work for me.My scalp was extremely itchy after using only conditioner.Furthermore, I am a runner and I found that I started to break out all over my scalp. The breakout cleared up after I started using shampoo again.I have to wash my hair every other day, but I did follow the advice to put conditioner on the ends before washing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hesitant skeptic, now a believer
I stumbled upon this book accidentally and I am so thankful I did. The web site [..] was mentioned in a letter written to Paula Begouin in her newsletter "Cosmetics Counter Update" (please note that Paula was NOT recommending the web site -- it was a reader who mentioned it and Paula published the letter). Paula is the Cosmetics Cop [..]and expert researcher in all things beauty. So, intrigued and curious, I went to the curly hair web site. It's the usual blather of bad-to-okay advice, hawking of various expensive products, etc. But I then found out about THIS book, so the trip to the web site was worth it. I decided to order it, since my hair lost all its curl after I moved to an island in Puget Sound, in the Seattle, WA area. You'd think that being surrounded by water, and in a more moist atmosphere than Southern California, I'd have MORE curls, not fewer. Alas, not true -- my hair would wave at best, hang with a few "angel wings" at worst (ladies, you know what I mean!). So, the book couldn't hurt, and it wasn't terribly expensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much advice
I was disappointed in this book- not much practical advice, almost nil hair cutting advice. He advises not washing hair every day. Ugh! I see plenty of unwashed hair and it isn't attractive. I don't use shampoo every day, but do use conditioner. Also, he is a big believer in setting hair with rollers. If you ask most males, their opinion is that women in hair rollers are very unattractive-good way to ruin a marriage. The hair styles are unimaginative (and need a set). Often he sends you to a "professional stylist" rather than helping you take care of hair on your own (Gray hair-difficult to color, go to professional.) Didn't learn anything new-all seems to be common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Nick Chavez Followers!
Nick Chavez, is an actual Stylist who owns his on salon in Beverly Hills, whom I discovered through QVC. His products are excellent and so is his book.He has done an excellent job.His book is beautifully illustrated, and his tips and directions on how to syle and take care of your hair are easy to follow. He sincerely cares about a woman's hair and how she treats it. Nick covers every hair texture, which many books do not.One added bonus for those of us who are followers of Nick, he includes a wonderful little bio about how he got started, his relationship with QVC, and his family (wonderful picture of his beautiful family). Buy the book, his tips do work, and buy his products!

I have seen this guy on homeshopping network, and thought he had great tips on do's and don'ts for hair. And seems like a person who really cares for peoples hair. Started reading the book and finished before I went to bed. I don't much about hair but this book helped me to learn to care for my hair. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I was able to read this book in a day, that is how facinating and exciting it was.Filled with crucial and useful information about curls. Most importantly, Dickey "appreciates" natural hair and doesn't use his book to promote texturizers and relaxers and some "natural experts" do.So often, I have found writers try to impose upon you the things you are avoiding; Chemicals.I loved it.I am impressed, this is not someone who makes assumptions and writes a book, he knows hair, especially curl hair.A great read a worth every star.

1-0 out of 5 stars tried this for one week
never had more trouble with my hair, and it looked dull and tangled if I moved my head quickly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous and Educational
Anthony Dickey knows non-straight hair. He speaks like a University Professor on the subject, only difference is he speaks with life and humor.LOL.If you care about your naturally curly, kinky or wavy hair please buy this book. The only thing missing is the name and number to his Salon because I need to book an appointment to see this man LIKE YESTERDAY! Buy this book. :) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars PAID ADVERTISEMENT...Not with my money!
I resent squandering my faith in ordering this book. This is the most self serving waste of words I have ever ordered from Amazon. I expected a instructive and useful manual to help Black Women survive the hair wars.I expected helpful tips in understanding our hair & how to master the obstacles we encounter, ranging "yes, chemicals, but also the harsh environment. Some of us live in dry climates, humid climates, getting older & seeing hair changes, dry hair, thinning hair & to grow old with fabulous hair. something like this is what I call "talking hair",Instead, the first 50 pages address, "my spirtual journeys, daily affirmations & issues of not having loving parents?... is that why my hair is damaged? The last 150 pages are hair styles, mostly fake ones ( I can get in a fashion magazine for less!)One chapter gives useful instruction, so this book could have been 200 pages lesser and with thinner pages (like most books), instead of the 100# gloss paper used in half the book, giving false impression of providing volumes of useful instructions for desirous Black Women.Save your money, really!I am getting mine back!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

2-0 out of 5 stars Not all Good...
The pictures in this book are not very helpful when trying to recreate the styles. I purchased this book in order to gain ideas for hairstyles for my little ones. This book does contain pics of different styles, but it will only show the hairstyle from one angle. It may show a picture from either the front, side or back, but not from all three angles. If you just want to read a few stories about kids experiences with their hair, then purchase this book. If you are looking for pictures of hairstyles, consider yourself warned.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's All Good Hair
When my daughter was born, I had to send my sister down to the hospital store to buy an adult comb because none of those cute little baby combs would work.Being Black, I thought I knew all there was about caring for black hair. But my hair is fine and medium length and here I was with a baby with thick, coarse wavy hair.My daughter has long, beautiful healthy hair.A lot of girlfriends as well as strangers ask what do I use on her hair and how do I care for it.I ran across this book in a thrift store and purchased it for $1.I like this book because it does a good job of telling you how to take care of your child's hair from birth and to recognize that your child's hair might be different from yours.Yeah, the illustrations could be better, but it's a good place to start if you want to get up to speed with caring for an African American child's hair.I often give this book as a gift at baby showers accompanied by Jane Carter Solution's hair care products, especially nourish & shine--it's a must have!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if your child has short hair!
I checked this book at the library and was so glad I didn't buy it. It had some really cute hairstyles but all the hair styles featured children with way past shoulder length hair. All the tips she gave were basic and stuff I already knew. She completely skipped toddlers. She had a small section on how to take care of babies hair and then jumped to pictures of older children with relaxed long hair. She had a small section for locked hair no section on nature hair and an area on how to relax your childs hair if her hair too nappy to comb. My daugher is only three. I was looking for tips to keep her hair healthy and to help it grow. She had one picture of a little girl with short braided hair and everyone else with hair down their back which is something most toddlers have yet. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I thought "Kids Talk Hair" was much better. This one's author seems more interested in bragging about her accomplishments (which aren't that impressive) than in telling you about hair care. The photos are drab and unenlightening. The message I got from this book was"go to a salon". For this I need a book?

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Hair Help!
I loved this book! I got my first relaxer at 8 or 9 so I have never learned to care for natural hair. This became a big problem when my daughter was born with a head full of it. I got through the baby stage OK, but now she is two and her hair is thick and kinky. After using styles that put too much stress on her hair, big chunks started to fall out and I knew I had to do something. I went to the Web to see if I could find a site or book that talked about hair stlyes for African-American children. I found Kinki Kreations and went to the nearest Border's the next day. I immediately began to use the tools and suggestions in the book, which was easy to read and understand, and had lots of illustrations. This was incredibly helpful to a novice like me. Within two days I had washed, trimmed, and combed out her hair as the book instructed and put it into little twists. I have never gotten so many compliments on my daughters hair! Her hair has stopped breaking, it's growing rapidly and is strong and healthy. The natural oils recommended have worked wonders. My heart sang when my little girl told me, while admiring her new twists in the mirror, "Mommy, I like my puffy hair". I am indebted to Jena Williams for sharing her knowledge and philosophy in this great little book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for boys' hair
If you have a girl, this would be a great book -- some really cute styles (I love the afro puffs). The section on boys' hair pretty much simply advocates to cut the hair very close to the scalp. There is info for cornrows, but the hair has to be fairly long. What was most frustrating was a picture of a boy with "coils", stating that this is a popular way to grow out the hair, but there is absolutely no info. on how to do these coils. She has one method of dreadlocks, but you can get more and better info. on the internet.

4-0 out of 5 stars good advice, cute story, excellent pictures
Basic hair care/styling advice throughout the book, very good for someone who wants more general knowledge on hair products, styles, how to take care of but it wasn't very detailed.
3-0 out of 5 stars a bit daring
the text in the book was quite helpful and the artistry of the photos were great...but the fact of the matter is, someone would have to be crazy or else realllly daring to try some of these hairstyles: think teased huge, feathers sticking out of the head, chopsticks-overload giving a general porcupine look to one hairstyle. as inspiration or perhaps wild runway looks they're wonderful, but i don't know anyone who would ever attempt to wear one of these styles in public.keep that in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificient book
This book is magnificient. I'm pretty good at styling my own hair, but this book gave such excellent guides, I would definitely recommend it. What I thought it lacked was more information on where to get hair extensions and indepth info on how to put them on yourself. We all want to look like our best and look different from our daily look and hair extensions make the difference between slight difference in appearance and incredible difference in appearance. I finally found a site worth its salt too, for anyone like me who wants the most.

2-0 out of 5 stars Informational but Biased
Ms. Begoun should be commended for her massive research but I found her information biased, and her opinions flip-flop from chapter to chapter.I did not understand her vicious attack on companies that produce natural and organic products, especially one particular organic company so I did a little more digging. She has her own haircare line which is full of all the things she says are bad for your hair. Her book seems to seeks to discredit any companies that make great products that do not use the chemicals she uses.
1-0 out of 5 stars NO INFORMATION FOR BLACK WOMEN, RACIST
This book is not for people of color.Paula Begoun only devotes 10 pages to information regarding black hair, and actually has the audicity to say, "Suffice it to say that the natural state of black hair is currently not an acceptable fashion statement for women of color."IS SHE CRAZY??? This statement is extremely offensive. (Would anyone ever say almond shaped eyes are unacceptable on asian people?)This is a part of our genetics and our looks. Does Paula notice all of the models, actresses, singers and even politicians who are black (women) who wear their hair natural???Even white people and asian people try to braid/lock their hair to look like ours!!If she thinks natural black hair is unacceptable, then she should not write books abour hair care, and go live by herself on an island (which is obviously where she has been).Paula sweetie, stop sniffing hair care products...

4-0 out of 5 stars ..OR - how to see through the marketing hype and be an informed consumer!
Paula Begoun is the Ralph Nader of the cosmetics world. There's a reason why cosmetic giants pay big bucks to get our attention.Basically, the gist of the book is:

4-0 out of 5 stars Curly Hair Relief
Ouidad understands curly hair as she, her siblings, and parents, all have differeing types of curly hair. How nice it is to have a stylist who created a product and a cutting method because she, herself, needed it -- as opposed to a marketer who is simply trying to make more sales. This book, partnered with the web site, is worth the money if you are trying to conquer and show off your beautiful curls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Curly Girl
This book may not be as colorful as Curly Girl, but it offers better, more practical advice that really does help. Never shampooing and constantly rubbing conditioner into the scalp without rinsing thoroughly (as recommended in Curly Girl) is just unhealthy, and conditioner will not "clean" the scalp or the hair. There are only a few flaws in Ouidad's book, including a recommendation for those with kinky curls to wash once a week (that's not enough-wait no more than 4 days for optimum scalp and hair health) andadvising people to stay away from "harsh" claryfing shampoos (there are many gentle ones, such as Suave Daily Clarifying, White Rain Extra Body, and Tressemme Deep Cleansing, and sometimes you need to get conditioner and styling product buildup out of your hair). The book also makes it seem as if salon products are better than drugstore products (not true). But the book is VERY helpful and inspiring for curly-haired people. You'll really learn to love and take care of your curls.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get CURLY GIRL book instead
Sorry but this book was like watching an informercial for Ouidad products.Don't waste your money on the book or the "miracle product."Buying a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner which contains the right proteins, emollients, humectants etc.and alcohol-free clear hair gel from your local discount store will do the trick.HINT: Look for products in the ethnic hair care section of your store, product with a big price tag that promises your hair a miracle! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a bad haircut and here you are...
What is it about a bad haircut ~ I mean a truly, truly BAD haircut, so bad my husband didn't even recognize me when I walked out of the salon ~ that drives people to "Haircutting for Dummies"?I know I'm not the only one who has been in this DIRE situation. This is a good guide, a little confusing in places, but that confusion might be me, but overall a very helpful guide. If only this book could grow out bad haircuts... at least it can help fix them.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is poorly written and confusing.
I bought this book to save a little cash by learning to cut my own hair. In 300+ pages this book does not give any basic instruction (implied in the title "For Dummies") but instead goes on for almost the entire length of the book about cutting very specific styles in an innane step-by-step "instruction" that nobody but the writer could possibly follow. Waste of time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's ok but don't spend the money
I took out a copy from the library, it's worth it as a library book, has some helpful tips, but no reason to spend $15 on it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Hair Has Been Rescued!
I have read many hair care books, and this by far is the "ultimate" in hair care and maintenance guides.I have implemented many of Mr. Fletcher's suggestions into my daily hair care routine, and have experienced tremendous results. My hair has gotten longer, stronger, and more lustrous. My only regret is that I did not discover this book sooner. Thank you, Mr. Fletcher!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste
I bought this book from the man himself. Not only is he arrogant, but his book made proposterous suggestions (standing on ones head to grow hair) and not enough information about how to grow hair. Save your money and buy No Lye: The African American Woman's Guide To Natural Hair Care by Tulani Kinard instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for Hairloss
Honestly, I don't think I really would have needed this book. When I first picked it up, I had beautiful waist-length black hair. I, striving for perfection, read it through and eventually bought it. I was completely hooked by the time I read about shampoo companies and the dangerous chemicals leading to hairloss. After easing into it slowly by making the essential shampoo and using the apple vinegar based rinse, I realized that my scalp stopped being so itchy and my hair stopped being so greasy. Flakes disappeared, and after I started using the cayenne based solution every week, my acne even started to clear up. This book has served me well. I don't think I shall ever go to store-bought shampoo ever again. This book should appeal to more than the balding demographic that it already does - everyone should take advantage of this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of useful information
I've been steadily losing hair since my twenties (I'm a woman in my early thirties). I attribute the loss mainly to stress and periods of extreme dieting which are, thankfully, behind me (the dieting, not the stress). I've tried seeing trichologists who mainly prescribed massage, expensive hair treatments and iron supplements, but without much improvement. Most of the thinning has occurred around my hairline -- if I pull my hair back into a pony tail I see areas of bare scalp. All in all I have a pretty healthy lifestyle with exercise, good diet, etc. I decided to give this book a try as a last resort, and because I'm on a limited budget. I Now that I've given you some background, on to the review:
3-0 out of 5 stars Too good to be true?
I was very excited when I saw this book. There is a lot of great information in it and it makes a lot of sense. But now, after trying some of the recipes, I'm not so sure about it. The shampoo recipe made my hair so oily and heavy that I had to rewash my hair with my regular store bought brand. It does say to use only 1 teaspoon per washing and I used more, but I had to use a lot to get all of my hair lathered. The second recipe I tried was the flaxseed volumizer gel, and it was impossible to strain so I ended up just throwing the whole mess away. My third disaster, which I recommend that you DO NOT try, was the flour and water conditioner. Maybe I did something wrong, but when I tried to rinse it out of my hair it turned into something resembling rubber cement. I thought I was going to have to cut it out. My boyfriend spent 1 1/2 hours slowing working it out of my hair using a comb, water, and half a bottle of conditioner to soften it a little bit. Now I'm a little skeptical about trying any other of the recipes. I will make sure next time to only try a small portion of my hair first and not my whole head. Also, the cost to buy all of the initial ingredients is considerable. However, they will last for quite a while. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bare Faces Have Empty Souls
I attended the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Carson City on a lark, and entered myself as a contestant in a bout of sheer madness. It was pretty difficult to imagine what these people would be like. Before long, I learned that anyone willing to transform his face into a piece of abstract art is fine by me.This magical Halloween weekend of October, 2003 is well encapsulated in this amusing and photo-filled masterwork - and I don't just say that becuase my photo is the final image in the volume. Come to Berlin in October for the next competition and feel the excitement - just don't touch my beard. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'd like to see better illustrations
The info is good. Im a cosmetology student, so I can actually understand the content. The pictures are not very good. I would like to see color pictures, w/maybe a Manikin demonstration, something other than the simple drawings provided.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guide to coloring hair at home
I would have liked to have seen more color illustrations, but this is a very good book to have if you're interested in hair coloring. Although it seems to be written for cosmetology students, the material is written in a very simple, straightforward way that laypeople can understand. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic Styles - Not Enough Formal Styles
I expected more formal braid and updo styles, especially for the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful.
I bought this book because I was looking for some hairstyles beyond those found in basic books on braids and updos. There are some styles in this book in addition to the standard ropes, twists and French braids. They involve twisting your hair into zig-zags, looping, weaving a ribbon into your hair, or tying your hair into a big bow on the back of your head. These styles are ugly!Just plain atrocious-looking! Trashy and/or bizarre. Salon Ovations should be able to do better than that. 4-0 out of 5 stars Simple enough for anyone to use
This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn to braid hair in a wide variety of styles. It includes information on the basics of working with long hair as well as 20 different braids. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good teaching book, but has some benefits.
I had to get this book for an african hair braiding class. We didn't even use the book. It doesn't teach you techniques, but there are good hair care recipes in the book. If you want to learn braiding techniques your better off looking in a search engine for braiding videos.

5-0 out of 5 stars When you are ready
This book was great! when or if you decide to be natural , Or if you already are, you will learn something new.Great info about SEVERAL natural hair styles, braids, with or with out extensions,afros,twists,Locs/Dreadlocks.The pics were Great!,Fabulous info on essential oils, great recipes, this book is great for someone who is going to school for natural hair or someone who just wants to learn. It is a TEACHING book, healthy hair begins from the inside out. What I liked about the Loc section is that it is straight up and to the point,REAL locs will NOT happen over night. Page 245 sums it ALL up, I like how she saved the best for last!I'm partial though cause I have locs:)This book will teach you how to be natural and stay natural.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good
I think the book was good but it could have been better.I agree with another review which said that techniques on palm rolling and flat twists were scant. It would have just been better to leave these two styles out, than to have step-by-step instructions on other styles and nothing on these two.I am guessing Mrs. Bailey and her associates do not want to give away too many tips and secrets and it left me a little disappointed.Overall the good was very good but I agree the instructional portion should have had bigger, clearer pictures.I liked "Let's Talk Hair" better also. ...
