4-0 out of 5 stars Better textbook than prior years
This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good all around Beauty School book
Most of the chapters are well written and understandable.I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars My complaints for local hairstylists
For what the book taught hairstylists about cuts for round, and squared faces are totally wrong. If thte hair has to be styled to lift off the forehead, and come forward: All the hairstylists would do is leave bangs to the side of the client's face.Round faces should not have hair on top of hteir head. That is to crop up a spiky hairdo. To place some hair over the ears and cheeks is to make bangs on the side of the client's face.I have no idea what the editor meant by "keep the hair up on one side."I don't think round, and squared faces should have bangs at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need
This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important. You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and missleading
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.4-0 out of 5 stars Great text!
This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars So you want to learn about skin care, eh?
I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource
The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC REFERENCE
I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not to bad
The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely talented, not for everyone
Kevyn Aucoin is definitely everything his reputation says he is.This book is excellent, informative, and extremely well put together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making Faces, wow
Making Faces is an excellent book. However, it might not be what you expect. This book is wonderful provided you are looking for something a little more outlandish, extravagant, or theatrical. It focuses on color, mood, and the art of makeup.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing talent
I bought this book for my wife who works in a salon. But I find myself entertained by it too!Kevin is a fantastic makeup artist (which is obvious when you first open the book).I think anyone in the fashion/beauty industry should see this book. The book has makeup tips and tricks and plenty of beautiful pictures of celebs and normal people made to look like models, goddesses, and celebs from the past.A gorgeous book to own! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Color Me Beautiful
This is a great book. I gave away my first copy and puchased this one to replace it. I have also given this book as a gift.It is easy to read and a great tool for looking your best. The colors you wear make a big difference in the way you look. I have even purchased the color swatches from Ms Jackson's website and take them with me when I go shopping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still works after all these years
I had my colors analyzed at summer camp, way back in the 1980's, using this book.Almost twenty years later, I still have the color swatches, and still rely on them for choosing what shades to wear.
2-0 out of 5 stars Terribly outdated, and confusing formany women.
Any woman of any haircolor and ethnicity can be any one of the four seasons. Skin tone determines your season more than anything else.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Technique
The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Black & White Photos!
You would think that a book on makeup -- especially at this price -- would contain many more color photographs. After all, successful makeup is dependent upon illusions of color as well as light and shadow.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very thorough textbook...Highly recommended
This book is recommended in several pro makeup sites [...] and for a good reason. This book is a must-have for all the professional makeup artists. The book talks about all aspects of makeup- from straight beauty makeup, to special effects, appliances and hair techniques (applying moustaches and beards). The appendix itself is worth the price of the book. It talks about what should be in a makeup kit, product recommendations and comparisons, and what to expect when trying to get into a union. I love, love, love this book. I can't say enough good things about it, and have constantly relied on it for accurate information regarding makeup applications.

3-0 out of 5 stars Textbook or Reference for someone on the beginning.
I didn't buy this book and I'm glad I didn't. I'm not much of a textbook reader and this is definitely it. Contains basic details about things you should know but if you're really into skincare and have read too many books before this one, this is not the book for you. It should be for someone on the Skin Care 101 or someone looking for a reference book. So bad coz I'd really want to like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars esthetician's opinion
As a licensed esthetician, I find this book my best resource. It covers most of the questions I have had as a skin care professional and many of my client's questions as well. I consider this book essential to anyone in my profession. It is readable and understandable for anyone, those in the business or those just wanting to understand their skin and what products can help them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
A must have for beginers, even for therapists that have been in business for a while. Great marketing ideas and tips. This book has changed my practice, by not only giving me the confidence I needed but also to be able to follow through with ideas and the know how on how to do it in a more professional manner. Awesome book, kudos to Monica Reseberry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it and couldn't put it down
It's been the best book on massage marketing that I have read and better than any massage marketing class that I have attended. I really couldn't put it down and spent all my down time reading. Most of the suggestions are in practice by many, I'm sure, but it's just some common sense advice that she gives or maybe just a positive attitude towards our service oriented careers that has made a big difference for me.I can't say that since I've read the book (one month ago) that I've had a surge in clients, but it's made the clients I have more satisfied. And my head is definitely filled with new ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of information, but not recommended for beginners.
I picked up this book at the library and I am impressed with the sheer amount of information Cavitch has stuffed into it. I learned things in this book that I haven't seen anywhere else, such as the idea to cut your PVC pipe in half to make it easier to remove your soap. I also found the information about petroleum lip balms. They fix the problem temprarily but ulitmately dry out your lips so you become addicted to it. That floored me because I AM addicted to lip balm! She gives us a recipe for a simple lip balm that is composed of beeswax and oil. I can't wait to try it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Most thorough soapmaking book available
I have been making soap for several years now and have checked out 15+ books from the library on this topic. The soapmaker's companion is the most comprehensive resource I have ever read, and has enough of the basics for a beginner as well. The recipes included range from simple (basic bars) to complex (glycerin soap).I am a chemist, so I appreciate the chapter on the properties of all kinds of oils and the instructions on calculating the right amount of lye.If you want to make soap, this is the best book to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than I Bargained For!
I never realized that I could make my own beauty products!I thought they had to be manufactured in a "laboratory"!Well, the kitchen is the only laboratory one needs. Not only was I very tired of paying outlandish prices for skin moisturizers and beauty creams, some of them actually irritated my skin more than helped.I searched the web for books on "homemade" personal care products.I thought, 'what have I got to lose?'The facial moisturizer recipe in this book was extremely easy (and fun) to make, and ... my skin has never felt or looked better.I have made many of the products in this book. Not only do they all work, but the ingredients are readily available, simple to assemble and inexpensive to make.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving this book!
I became interested in making my own beauty products for about one year now which is about when i bought this book.It is truly incredible. It is full of interesting and easy to follow recipes. The list of beauty ingredients in abcorder is wonderful because it exlains the use of items and where you can find them. I just cant stop reading this book over and over again. I try new recipes and then read more and try more.I bought Cox's other book "beauty for the seasons" (gift giving) it too is great, but this one is the best beginner and experienced person's choice.I highly recommend it.

I just recieved my copy of SalonOvations Day Spa Techniques and at this point I've only browsed the pages. It looks very interesting and useful. However, I'm really writing at this time to rave about the seller I received it from; Leslie66, who wrote me a kind email after the sale, letting me know about the prompt and effecient method by which the book was mailed out. And after having recieved it, I can say it is in excellent condition and appears to be everything the seller advertised.

A friend of mine is a nail technician and running her own business. She was telling me today that she had been trying to find some samples of the book in japanese but it seems impossible. Could you please let me know if they come written in Japanese by any chance. She is one of my best friends and I would like to surprise her with the news that she can find the Art & Science of Nail Technology written in Japanese.Read more

Good inforamtion if I felt like I could trust it. So many typos and mispelled words, I started to question the accuracy of it.
