2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I thought "Kids Talk Hair" was much better. This one's author seems more interested in bragging about her accomplishments (which aren't that impressive) than in telling you about hair care. The photos are drab and unenlightening. The message I got from this book was"go to a salon". For this I need a book?

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Hair Help!
I loved this book! I got my first relaxer at 8 or 9 so I have never learned to care for natural hair. This became a big problem when my daughter was born with a head full of it. I got through the baby stage OK, but now she is two and her hair is thick and kinky. After using styles that put too much stress on her hair, big chunks started to fall out and I knew I had to do something. I went to the Web to see if I could find a site or book that talked about hair stlyes for African-American children. I found Kinki Kreations and went to the nearest Border's the next day. I immediately began to use the tools and suggestions in the book, which was easy to read and understand, and had lots of illustrations. This was incredibly helpful to a novice like me. Within two days I had washed, trimmed, and combed out her hair as the book instructed and put it into little twists. I have never gotten so many compliments on my daughters hair! Her hair has stopped breaking, it's growing rapidly and is strong and healthy. The natural oils recommended have worked wonders. My heart sang when my little girl told me, while admiring her new twists in the mirror, "Mommy, I like my puffy hair". I am indebted to Jena Williams for sharing her knowledge and philosophy in this great little book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for boys' hair
If you have a girl, this would be a great book -- some really cute styles (I love the afro puffs). The section on boys' hair pretty much simply advocates to cut the hair very close to the scalp. There is info for cornrows, but the hair has to be fairly long. What was most frustrating was a picture of a boy with "coils", stating that this is a popular way to grow out the hair, but there is absolutely no info. on how to do these coils. She has one method of dreadlocks, but you can get more and better info. on the internet.

4-0 out of 5 stars good advice, cute story, excellent pictures
Basic hair care/styling advice throughout the book, very good for someone who wants more general knowledge on hair products, styles, how to take care of but it wasn't very detailed.
3-0 out of 5 stars a bit daring
the text in the book was quite helpful and the artistry of the photos were great...but the fact of the matter is, someone would have to be crazy or else realllly daring to try some of these hairstyles: think teased huge, feathers sticking out of the head, chopsticks-overload giving a general porcupine look to one hairstyle. as inspiration or perhaps wild runway looks they're wonderful, but i don't know anyone who would ever attempt to wear one of these styles in public.keep that in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificient book
This book is magnificient. I'm pretty good at styling my own hair, but this book gave such excellent guides, I would definitely recommend it. What I thought it lacked was more information on where to get hair extensions and indepth info on how to put them on yourself. We all want to look like our best and look different from our daily look and hair extensions make the difference between slight difference in appearance and incredible difference in appearance. I finally found a site worth its salt too, for anyone like me who wants the most.

4-0 out of 5 stars the best of the best perfumes
This extrordinary book covers the most impacting fragrances on both the public and the industry. From conception to development to launches, it gives a thorough history of these wonderscents. Each chapter is a spesificscent, covering the designer, the fragrance creators, the bottledevelopment and all the dirty little secrets of how they got to the top.The book thoroughly covers 45 perfumes (I think he missed a few) includinggreats like Chanel #5, Shalimar,Anais Anais and Angel. Mr. Edwards alsogives a composition rundown, But this is a little confusing if you are notfamilliar with his Fragrance Manual. Required reading for any fragrancenut.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly comprehensive treatment of a fascinating subject
At first glance, Perfume Legends is a beautifully illustrated coffee table book packed with fascinating stories about the creation and evolution of some of the greatest fragrances of the century. Dig deeper and you discover it's a valuable reference tool for anybody involved in the fashion or beauty business. Perfume is an art form, it captures the spirit of the times, and it's an eye-opening exercise to trace the evolution of fragrance through the history of the 20th century. It's also intriguing to read about the scientific breakthroughs that gave rise to new perfume notes, which greatly expanded the perfumers' repertoire. Michael Edwards obviously knows his subject intimately and he manages to share his knowledge in a readable way. He has clearly spent years researching the true stories behind the myths. The clever combination of scholarship, anecdote and brilliant pictorial material (some of it never published before) makes this book a must for anyone interested in the subject.Even people who just love fragrance will get a lot out of Perfume Legends. It's the only truly comprehensive reference on the subject of French female fragrance classics that I've been able to find. I heartily recommend it. It is ironic that Michael Edwards, who lives in Australia, was born in Africa and educated in England, seems to have beaten the French at their own game. They must be furious. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect pitch.
As a new volunteer Big Sister, I hoped this would help break the ice with my "little." We pass the book back and forth every week, each of us doing the exercises and writing comments in the margins.I can barely keep up with her!The author has perfect pitch when it comes to keeping girls interested, enthusiastic, and building self awareness and confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave New Girls: Creative Ideas To Help Girls Be Confident,
I am a teacher of troubled middle and high school girls and boys.I have used this book with some of my students. It has given them new perspectives. It is so easy and dangerous to live life according to theassumptions of one's particular culture. This book helps them see beyondthat. It helps girls especially see that they can achieve their goals byfollowing the simple exercises. It brings awareness to them of the methodsof the media which attempts to characterize them into a single mold.It isintrospective and enlightening.I recommend this book for anyone who workswith young people and those who care about their welfare.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for teen-age girls!
I was highly impressed by this book and can't wait to use it with my teen-age Girl Scout troop. My daughter (13) picked up the book and read it through. She thought the exercises were interesting, up-to-date and onesthat she would like to do herself and with her friends. The situations arevery true to the lives of teenagers today and the language is not"preachy" or "fake".I would highly recommend it toany teen-age girl. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a universal approach
The approach offered by this book, which is to get out and network yourself to friends of friends through meetings and lunches isn't going to work for everyone.First of all, I found the book quite heterosexist. The book's suggestion of advertising your availability to everyone you know is problematic if you're a closeted homosexual. As a bisexual I found the idea of advertising my ability to friends of friends (of friends, etc.) who were strangers to me and outing myself with no idea of their beliefs about bisexuals and the possible hostile reaction that could provoke quite unreasonable.
5-0 out of 5 stars An approach that is clear and makes sense
Domininz offers a step-by-step approach to finding love that does not skip the important steps:knowing yourself, knowing what kind of person you want, and knowing that you are ready to give and receive love.He hasguidelines to follow for each step.He also reminds us that meeting peopletakes effort, that you shouldn't keep your interest and availability asecret in your community, and that half-way measures get in the way offinding real love (e.g., dragging out that old not-right relationship formonths and years while you hope Mr. or Ms. Right will show up at your doorwhen you're not looking).I highly recommend this book! ... Editorial Review

Your biological age may be a lot different from your chronological age--for better or worse. Dr. Michael Roizen, a preventive gerontologist at the University of Chicago who appears perennially in the "1,000 Best Doctors in the U.S." listings, says that with the help of his RealAge program, you can reduce your biological age by up to 20 years. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reality Check
This book is an excellent source of information on the body's aging processes. It will educate the reader on ways to identify lifestyle choices that may have a negetive impact on one's health. Written with a negetive undertone, this is a real slap-in-the-face, a good reality check.Makes you aware of your unhealthy habits and gives you options of control.Emphasis on being responsible for your own health and happiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book caused be to change many bad behaviors
I read the first Realage book in 2000 and it is the book that finally got me to exercise, floss daily, eat nuts, wear my seat belt, take vitamins and start many other healthy habits. When you start thinking of your behavior as making you older or younger it really make you conscious of the fact that you are damaging your body. I have read hundreds of books in my life but the Realage books have caused more change in me than any other. Sign on to Realage.com and take the survey to see what your real age is, read the book, and change your behavior so you can live an extra 10-20 years, your family will thank you.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ignores detoxification and other things
I thought this book had some useful information when I first read it several years ago. After I read it, I stopped taking selenium supplements and decreased my daily dosage of vitamin C to 2,000 mg. Then I got a tumor in my neck (spring 2000), and most recently a breast tumor. I read that selenium actually inhbits the growth of tumors, so I am upset for having followed Roizen's advice. Also, I learned that one can take up to 10 GRAMS of vitamin C per day with very beneficial results. This vitamin also helps prevent and fight cancer. Finally, Roizen completely omits any mention of the need for regular detoxification. He says it's okay to drink tap water! I have lost my respect for this author and am now selling his book. It's out of date. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vive La France!
Is not the words "Joie de Vivre" French for joy of life? Qui!
1-0 out of 5 stars fluff history
Some more rigorous historical analysis would have turned this 'lite' read into something worthwhile. The crude translations of 17th-century France into modern-day America, irrespective of different economic systems and radically discrete cultures, turn what could have been an inspired thesis into the kind of chatter you'd expect to hear from grandma.

5-0 out of 5 stars "stylish" social history
This was such a pleasant, historical read.I'm very interested in all things stylish, if not fashionable. This title interested me at once.It really describes how so many things we use today date back to the era of Louis XIV. Today's obsession with luxury goods really has its roots in France's history.Louis XIV wanted every aspect of his life, including those around him, to be luxurious.Today, many middle-class (and sometimes lower class) working person thinks they deserve a Louis Vuitton bag or Lexus SUV.Living in style is a privilege, but can be obtained with some creative thinking and budgeting, just as long as we have our priorities straight. ... it's a great book with lot of recipes for all your beauty needs like i said every woman should have this book and man for that matter it's a great money saver and it's just a really great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight and to the point
This is a very good book for the beginner like I am.This book has a chock full of very useful information without all the fancy pictures. Most spa books are built like magazines with colorful vivid pictures and not alot of information. This book is to the point and addresses many things and is not filled with fillers or useless junk information. It may not be as aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it give you the information you want and need to learn about herbal spas. There are many great ideas in here that can easily be used to build your own unique custom gifts that are more personable that going to commercial stores. There is enough reference in here to build your own concoctions as well.I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in herbal spas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough book on home beauty
Not only does this book offer recipes and tips on inexpensive, chemical-free beauty care, but the author also offers advice on purchasing, storing and choosing the proper products. It's a great resource if you want to save money but still look great and without putting toxins in your body.

4-0 out of 5 stars Friendly, Informative and Not Preachy!!!
This book is like listening to a wise, loving friend. It isn't preachy and Judy Ford is in touch with several generations, and both genders.I would compare her book to a big box of chocolates with a lot of variety!(I bet she'd like that!)
3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed thoughts
First i think it is ironic that this item was sold in the "self help" section of waldens when the book teaches you not to think of being single as a problem that needs to be fixed or delt with but to be enjoyed.

Editorial Review

"We promote wellness, longevity, radiance, and bliss when we follow simple, nurturing practices," says Horst Rechelbacher, the founder of Aveda, the natural, aromatherapy-based, hair-, skin-, and body-care products line. In addition to heading Aveda, he is also an environmental activist and a seeker who has studied the world's spiritual and self-healing traditions. He says the key to wellness, inner harmony, and beauty is a process that is eased by returning to nature and to the wisdom of the oldest cultures and rituals.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Yes it has product endorsements, but it also recommends other things.it is a book that each time i read, gives me clarity, and helps me relax.great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply exceptional!
Mr. Rechelbacher's book features ideas to help beautify your life from the inside, out. Both his writing style and the book layout is easy to read.He is very good about "suggesting" changes in your lifestyle, and with each change he suggests, he talks in detail about how such a change could benefit your life, health, and/or appearance. He uses his own rituals as a starting point, but encourages the reader to develop their own personal rituals. He does not shamelessly plug his own products (as some authors are wont to do).He even admits to not following his own advice occasionally!I especially liked his chapters on self-massage (something I'd never even considered), nutrition, and refreshing yourself mid-day.5-0 out of 5 stars Horst:Beyond Beauty & New Age Psychobable
Horst Rechelbacher was my hairdresser in 1968.In 2001; he has touched the lives of many, not just w/his excellent product line -- but because he is charisma. He is a complex person, so it's best for the reader to focus on the philosophy he expounds in this book rather than try to write his bio -- which many of his devotees would love to do.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great vintage children's clothing reference book!
This is a very well written book with excellent photographs. It is a must for all lovers of antique children's clothing.I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Well Dressed Child, A WonderfulInsight Into The Past.
This is an awesome book from cover to cover. I was enchanted with the text and the many fabulous pictures and have read it over and over again. I especially loved the Christening section and drooled over the pictures of the many exquisite gowns. I am thrilled to have this beautiful book to add to my antique book collection. I have found the author Anna MacPhail also has an equally superb web site (www.[...].com) which I have started to visit on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a lovely book.
Anna MacPhail's book is a work of art in itself.Every page is glossy photo paper, and only one page has no photos. Each photo is in color, (even the black and whites are sepia toned), and some of the items are priced, giving collectors an idea of value. This book has very littletext, so if visual history is your thing, this book is superb. ...
