5-0 out of 5 stars Quite useful for the straight (or gay) man
Now first off, I have to get something off my chest. I am not a homophobe - I had a homosexual roommate sophomore year of college and we got along fine - but I get tired of people (most commonly women) who either drool at anything or anyone homosexual or having this belief that homosexuals are inherently good at anything involving home decor or style. I hate to break it to you, but homosexuals are like you and me, and not all are like the Fab Five. Remember my homosexual roommate? His side of the room was the messiest I have ever seen a human being make. The Fab Five would have had collective heart attacks upon seeing the state of it. By the logic of the homofangirls, I was the homosexual. Not to mention that half the things said in this book I have also read in "straight" men's magazines including "Men's Health" or the alternate "Men's Fitness." I'm sorry folks, but there's no Cult of Gays out there in brown robes meeting in caves and passing down tablets written by God that tell you what brand of shaving cream to use. The reason the Fab Five are so good at what they do is because they have had the training or education and DO know what they are talking about. For example, Thom Filicia founded an interior design company, and Kyan Douglas has had experience in professional and commercial salons.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Fun format, visually appealing (of course!), useful information in all subjects, even some really delicious, simple-to-cook but impressive-to-serve recipes, and take it from a girl: what these guys say about what appeals to women (or turns us off) is absolutely true.Best of all, it's never about changing who or what the reader is, but about bringing out the best that's already in him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of useful advise here!
Heard the taped version of QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY by Ted Allen et al. . . . I must admit to not being a big favorite of the TV show (of the same name); however, that said,

3-0 out of 5 stars My opinion may be just a bit biased......
As I was reading all the reviews for 'Fabulous Fragrances II : A Guide to Prestige Perfumes for Women and Men,' I notcied a common 'mild disappointment' with everyone. Since I just happen to be "in the biz" myself
1-0 out of 5 stars Title is misleading if you bought the first book....
I bought her first book, "Fabulous Fragrances", which was a great book. However, I really feel like "Fabulous Fragrances II" should be called, "Fabulous Fragrances" and then state, "Revised edition" beneath it.Imagine my dismay at reading the first book and then excitedly ordering the second one, shelling out my 29.00 only to find it is the same exact book with some new things added.I was extremely dissapointed. The first book was soooooooo good. This second book has most of the same text word for word, which in my opinion makes it a revised book.THey added some more perfumes (while still including all the old stuff), and added a section for men. There are SO many other NEW perfumes that couldve been listed in place of what was in the previous book. Really dissapointing. There was NOT enough new material in this for it to be a seperate book.I hope others read this before they buy an almost identical version of the first book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too florid
As a fragrance addict with some basic knowledge of perfumery, I felt that Moran's book favored style over substance. I prefer descriptions that give detailed information (including subjective assessments) about the character of the fragrances, their history, and the quality and origin of the various notes (the way some connoisseurs would describe wines, for example) rather than the marketing-style flourishes ("a fragrance for making love, and making love last") that characterize most of her entries. For newcomers to perfumery, though, or consumers who want basic information on fragrance classifications and a wide variety of brands, this is a good starting point. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Health Book
Marilu gives 10 steps to improving your health which some people may feel are radical. However, after trying out at least half of the steps, I am feeling more energized and healthier. If you are tired, or overweight, or just feel blah, this book is for you. It challenges the way you think about different food groups (dairy, meat, sugar) and will help lead you to a new lifestyle.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice!!!
I was a little hesitant about buying a health book from an actress but I like Marilu and she seems like she know what she's talking about. The advice she gives makes sense. I was looking for a reason to give up dairy and this book was perfect. She gives 10 tips to make over your health. I'm doing one by one. First thing I did was I stopped drinking liquids with my food. I instantly noticed the difference. I was way more regular!! The next step was I gave up dairy. I lost about 12 pounds just by doing that. I used to have ice cream EVERY DAY!! And I just noticed yesterday that I no longer crave sweets. I'm still working on giving up caffeine, but like I said, one step at a time. I strongly recommend this book!! Giving up dairy is HARD! I'm a vegetarianso a lot of my foods included cheese, yogurt, and creams. Its a lot harder now, but I feel so much better! Its worth it! I just recently got a physical and am eagerly awaiting the results. This book is so cheap you wont lose anything except weight! I hope this helps you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall Most Helpful Book I Have EVER Read!!!
I first read Marilu's book in early 2001.Within 10 months of implementing some of Marilu's suggestions, I lowered my cholesterol from 219 to 121, went from 139 lbs to 112 lbs (I'm 5'2"), got rid of my daily sore throat I had for years, lessened the number of headaches I had, and boosted my energy and joy for life tremendously!!I also finally had the courage to leave a job that affected my life outside of work because it was so stressful.I never looked back!!People who hadn't seen me in a while wondered how my face (and my belly) got so thin because I had always carried around a little extra "baby fat" no matter how thin I was before.I attribute it to letting go of dairy.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I looked through this at the store and immediately went home and ordered a copy through Amazon. It is a great way to learn about applying make up and getting new ideas. it is also neat just to look through. Nice quality book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Make up Junkie
The idea of the overlays is great - it allows you to see the makeup completely finished without the distraction of the writing and then able to add that information of where to place the colors.I like the honesty in using the same light/background/hairstyle in the before and after pictures without any retouching - it is more truthful than many other books (believe me, I have many).
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful make-up guide
The acetate overlays in this book are very helpful for make-up placement. They allow you to see the face before make-up application as well as the finished face. There are some great looks in here. They all use NARS products, and each face lists the exact make-up used. This is very beneficial, especially for those who aren't the best at chosing colors and/or textures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Freakin' Awsome
I am a MUA and i have to say that this book is freakin' AMAZING!!! its beautifully inspiring...and a great reference book for women of color! i love it!!!!! BUY IT !!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was anxious to get my hands on this book and wondered if I should just buy it online without seeing it first.I'm glad I didn't, because when I checked it out at the library, I was truly disappointed.More than just make-up application, I was looking forward to seeing a variety of models that accurately displayed the world's women. The book showed models of color but not in the variety of shades that each ethnicity comes in.For example, the Asian models were shown stereotypically with light beige skin. No brown, Southeast Asian models were represented from countries such as Cambodia, Burma, Indonesia or Thailand or if there were some that did they looked lighter than most of their countrymen. The same with Latinas. Some of the models that were listed as coming from Latin American countries such as Brazil, Puerto Rico or Mexico looked nothing like the majority of Latinos from those countries. One model that supposedly was from Brazil looked like a poster girl for the Aryan nation!Blond hair, blue eyes and all!
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide for all levels
This book was recommended to me by a Facialist at Elizabeith Arden Red Door Spa.Its great for all levels from beginners to the more advanced!!It has a wonderful section on skincare products based on your skin type. Also, if you were ever confused about your skin type, it clears up any confusion in a very simple way. The other sections are also comprehensive and serve as a good guide......the makeup applications and techniques are explained and detailed enough to pull if off on your own.If you like make-up an skincare, this book is it!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can This Marriage Be Saved?
I wish I'd had this book when my first marriage ran into trouble. My counselor at that time told me the marriage could be saved only if both persons were willing to work on it and that one person could not save it alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars very insightful
This book is very insightful. I just got the book and couldn't stop reading it. It points out many things that I've been doing was wrong and teach me new techniques to due with issues. I am the person that often spend a lot of energy being angry and felt like there were no way out because my partner and I are both very bull headed. But this book taught me many techniques to manage my anger (to release them but not venting them on my partner.), and deal with the problem.... not putting it off and felt more and more bitter and angry for months and finally there was the big blow up! These are good techniques to learn even if you are in a good relationship. I can't wait to try these little experiments and see how they work out.

5-0 out of 5 stars With the right attitude, it does work!
An action leads to a reaction.A reaction then leads to another action. Many relationships get suck quickly into the sinking sand, before you know it, it is over!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice enough for what it is
This was suggested in the Style books, but it's really a glammed up history book overview of French femmes fatale over the centuries: Lots of historical factoid, with a very few touches of style advice.Entre Nous by Debra Ollivier will tell you more about how to actually be a femme fatale.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what it purports to be
I wish I had heeded "Amberlis's" review. This is no more than a long essay describing various French women in history and some attitudes of modern French women. The historical references are interesting, but several are repeated (some more than once) in different chapters of the book; and the last chapter (quoting at length from Henry VIII's diaries regarding his amorous adventures with a French woman) seems to have been thrown in to make the book seem longer and more titillating. The most annoying feature is the large number of typographical and grammatical errors (for example, "chaise lounge" instead of "chaise longue)."I would have enjoyed reading a condensed (and better edited)version in the New Yorker, but I really regret having paid $10.00 for the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars an important book but hard to read
I love fashion theory writings. I really do. And i know this is a seminal text in fashion theory. But man, oh man, is it a doozy! I'd give this book a 5 for the concepts, but a 1 for the ease of understanding. It is really hard to plough through - it is translated from French so features some tortuous sentence structure, and feels like the writings of a guy who really loves to read his own work; the higher the word count the better. I feel that it is work like this that leads people to view academic writing as necessarily dry, dense, verbose and pretentious, when there are amazing theory writers out there who are accessible and interesting to read.

For any reader who has had a father that read *Playboy* "for the articles," even Barthes' highly analytical approach to the relation between image and text--which he insists *produces* Fashion or "realclothing"--can be funny.I.e., reading in translation the Americanreader may not identify so much with the eccentricities of Barthes' styleso much as his choice of subject.Barthes' work remains entirely relevant, even though the book was published in 1967--the decade where fashion modelswithered, along with any grand sense of ethics on the part of commercialartists, clothing designers, and filmmakers, down to nothing.PerhapsBarthes would say this Nothing was a *commentary.*Perhaps not.Butcertain details of Barthes' analysis hold very interesting still:forexample, the fact that Barthes refers to the way the"written-garment" in a layout calls attention to specificportions of the "image-garment" as "amputations" (15).Read more

Editorial Review

Veronica Vera is an artist, sex activist, and founder of the world's first cross-dressing academy, a truly fabulous institution that has been serving the unique educational needs of "boys who want to be girls" since 1992. Serving more than 100 students a year at her New York City campus, Miss Vera offers courses in makeup application, how to walk in high heels, etiquette for budding princesses, sex education, and, of course, getting frocked. More importantly, she teaches each member of her largely heterosexual male clientele to develop his inner femme and to "take the insights of his femmeself and integrate them into his male persona." 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Philosophical
"For every woman who has burned her bra, there's a man ready to wear one. Or so says Veronica Vera, who founded Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls in 1992 as a resource for that part of the adult male population that feels the need to dress in women's clothing. This book unveils the naked truth about cross-dressing in a fun and philosophical way for would-be girls--and real girls, too! 35 photos."-- zebraz

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
First, know that I am all man, and I personally have no interest in learning how to cross dress. However, I found this book at my friend's house one night when I could not sleep, and being an attorney, I have to read.Let me tell you, this is a book I could not put down.If you want to understand not just the "why" but the "how to" of cross dressing, this is the book for you.It should be considered a must read for any transgender, transsexual, multigender, gendersexual, or transmultisexual. My only criticism is that it should have more tips.I want to sell the look on a bidet if I have the chance.Or my friend does, I mean.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment Value
A cheerful look at the world of the closeted cross-dresser, this book describes Veronica Vera's approach to offering cross-dressing services to men who have sufficient funds to be able to travel to her New York "Academy" for "lessons" of one sort or another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info
I always get excited about cellulite books.this one is great.I was a bit confused about just exactly how many supplements to take but think I got it down.I went to a health food store an bought two different lotions that had good bases to start and I went home and added more.I added 5 capsules of vitamin E, grape seed oil, arnica oil, 1 lg capsule of omega 3. mixed it together and it's soaks in really good. Am still looking for more anti oxident liquid to put into the lotion on the next bottle.I've been doing this for about 2 1/2 weeks and am definitely noticing a difference. I have before pic's and need to take now to really look at the difference.I am going to read the book again because it is so informative.I am also like I said going to find more antioxidents to add to the lotion as I feel that will really help with the free radicals.I recommend this book highly..

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Smooth
I am finally feeling better about it being summer and I am in shorts.I am not a supermodel by any stretch but I still want to feel good about how I look.I made the commitment to the program.I not only lost the cellulite on my legs, I lost 10 pounds!I feel great and certainly better about my looks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, giving it a try
I just purchased the book and I'm very excited to try the program.I think there are a lot of cellulite "solutions" out there, but I trust Dr. Murad to have the best one. I easily found the supplements at a warehouse membership store (you know where I mean) and at a great discount site on-line. 5-0 out of 5 stars Expert advice with good mix of recipes
Dr. McDaniel's book is a great reference for those who are seasoned soapers as well as beginners looking for an introduction. One of the reasons this book is superior to others is the fact that the photos are instructional as opposed to decorative. For example, on page 57, he has wonderful photos demonstrating what trace looks like and how it behaves. I LOVED that because trace was the most elusive thing for me. People described it till they were blue in the face and I still didn't get it. It wasn't till I saw the photo that the "Aha!" moment came.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book to Start With
Overall, as a beginner, I enjoyed this book and appreciated a lot of his explanations and directions. I found his explanation of the math/calculation portion a little confusing, however. His step by step soap making was nice. I wish he would have explained different methods of coloring soap a little more. I am interested in making herbal soaps as natural as possible, and this book has helped me to get a basic idea. He goes over melt and pour in a brief overview, and I was glad he didn't spend too much time on it. He teaches the cold process method. I plan to find books that teach hot process next. This book is recommended for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book

5-0 out of 5 stars Like your fairy godmother explaining good shoes
I was hopeless; I wore comfortable... shoes usually from Payless. Nothing wrong with that until I was bored and waiting for friends at a bookstore and saw the pretty red cover of this book and briefly read bits and parts. Left the store without buying it; but it had some strange hold on me. A month later, back in the store I picked it up again to read bits more, but again, left without buying. The few parts I read had me. I had to go back and buy it. So strange to have to buy it; like an addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I was able to read this book in a day, that is how facinating and exciting it was.Filled with crucial and useful information about curls. Most importantly, Dickey "appreciates" natural hair and doesn't use his book to promote texturizers and relaxers and some "natural experts" do.So often, I have found writers try to impose upon you the things you are avoiding; Chemicals.I loved it.I am impressed, this is not someone who makes assumptions and writes a book, he knows hair, especially curl hair.A great read a worth every star.

1-0 out of 5 stars tried this for one week
never had more trouble with my hair, and it looked dull and tangled if I moved my head quickly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous and Educational
Anthony Dickey knows non-straight hair. He speaks like a University Professor on the subject, only difference is he speaks with life and humor.LOL.If you care about your naturally curly, kinky or wavy hair please buy this book. The only thing missing is the name and number to his Salon because I need to book an appointment to see this man LIKE YESTERDAY! Buy this book. :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Adventurous and Inquisitive
This was a fantastic book that went through all six inhabited continents and shared all-natural beauty remedies that I was very excited to try. I'm a believer in natural recipes for masks, lotions, serums, etc. and this book was full of them. It was refreshing to have a book that allows me to do nearly everything in it without it shoving brand names with sky-high prices down my throat. The only thing that I found that I wasn't particularly fond of was that some of the recipes are repeated through the book in various contexts, and also because Shalini Vadhera has her own makeup line, she ends up touting it a bit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book
I think this is a wonderful book because it has beauty masks that you can make by yourself at home. It is also fun reading about beauty tips from around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is passport portable and PACKED with tips on being your best, gorgeous self!
I love it, there is something in here for EVERYONE, especially if you are the natural type of woman that isn't stupid enough to spends hundreds of dollars on products in Sephora instead of lovingly making them with your own hands with essentials found right in your kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I am a 44 yr old mom, I'll be getting my first tattoo tomorrow night. I'm excited, still a little nervous, but a lot better informed about what will be happening since I read this book. I'd suggest it to anyone about to get a tattoo or just in the planning stages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed
I bought this book and read it cover to cover before I got my first tattoo (three weeks ago at age 35).I wanted a tattoo, but I had two problems: I am afraid of needles and I like to know what is going to go on - no surprises.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book was much better than I expected...
I have several tattoos, including large ones that required multiple sittings.I would like to think I know pretty much all there is to know about getting a tattoo, but man, I learned so much from this book!It is well written, easy to read and full of funny facts and trivia that I had to share with anyone that would listen!I would suggest this book to anyone, from someone looking to get their first tattoo to veteran tattooees and even tattooists.(Okay, I am making up words I think...)GREAT BOOK! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Well..
This book is really nice if you don't have a lot of money and skill to handmake the costumes yourself. Doesn't really give a lot of inspiration to costume designers though.

2-0 out of 5 stars It need color pictures so badly!
If you think this book would be a good inspiring source for your Halloween costume or for your kids' school show, think again.4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book For The Beginning Costumer
I had my doubts at first when the author said she could assemble a costume with just glue, some seam ripping and little to no sewing. ThenI saw the costumes. Wow! I just wish the pics were IN COLOR(hint, hint) so I could fully appreciate them. Now were's my glue gun?;-) ... Read more
