3-0 out of 5 stars Out of date product information
This book was published in 2003, so much of the product information is out of date. It may have been helpful then, but not worth spending your money on now. I did find a number of statements that were blatantly false as well. Additionally much of what is presented as "fact" is actually just the author's opinion, be it an educated one.

1-0 out of 5 stars What Does Work?
I wish that reviewers here who say, "She hates product lines that have worked well for me and my clients" would tell us what those product lines are. I NEED to know what works and what to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My dreams come true
I have had great difficulty in finding good information about Japanese soaking tubs of the kind that I saw in Japan. This book, written for the U.S. market, not only contains a plethora of wonderful pictures and ideas for the tub I was planning for my bathroom, it included suppliers and other resources that have proven invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars This has changed my bathing habits forever...
I love the concepts in this book, so much so that I long to have a house with two bathrooms, one with toilet, one without, with a separate bath and shower area, and if I can't have a view with a nice garden, I could at least have a great overhead skylight. Now, doesn't that sound like heaven?!
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this little book Japanese Baths
Loved this little book. Great pictures. Very interesting reading detailing the whys and hows of the traditional Japanese style of bathing. Was originally looking for information and ideas on building my own ofuro and Japanese bath. Gained a lot of info from this book to come up with my own ideas and plans..... If you are trying to de-stress your life and live more peaceful and zen like, you will like this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but maybe hard to implement...
I thought the book was very interesting and thought provoking; however, I don't think it would be realistic for me as a mother of two young children to implement all of the lifestyle changes recommended at this time. I am hoping to start the process of "shedding," as the author refers to it, but I'm thinking it will be a long process (several years). Also, there is a lot of cost in changing all of your cosmetics, etc. And, I tried the organic deodorant (without aluminum) and I stunk too bad to keep using it--I went back to my old stand by. This is a good book to buy, though. It is well written and contains lots of good info and websites to go to for additional info. Hope this helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars It still happens today!
After what I have gone through, your book is like looking in a mirror. It's amazing how like me these other folks (case histories in the book) were before 1989. I can also see how people met eachother for romance purposes back then, and sometimes still do today. I mean we didn't have matching services like eHarmony and after becoming emotionally attached it is much harder to say, "I don't think we are are good match."
2-0 out of 5 stars Cases Without Real Solutions!
My review is ditto to Crystal's and Ellie's reviews--not enough information about overcoming one's own psychological problems that lead to unhealthy relationship attachments and possessiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can see clearer know !
Excellent Book !!This book was a gift for myself, and I am amazed at the extensive analysis of anxiously attached people, that it provides.I have a clearer view know as to why I behave like I behave in relationships, as well as why I tend to choose the partners I have chosen. It's all a cycle. It was a long read, but it's really, really worth it.All the examples of other people's experiences that are described in the book, were real eye openers.I am hoping this is a good step to start changing my behavioral patterns. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BREEZY, DOWN TO EARTH, AND BURSTING WITH DISH !

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, funny, logical and honest narrative
i deplore fashion and beauty magazines and I have never read Lucky- haven't read Elle in years- so I am in the minority of readership. However, I liked the sidebars especially, finding them full of practical information. As well, the dishy gossip on corporate politics a la fashion- I thought were very realistic without being cynical or cliched. The writer seems down to earth and perceptive, and funny and warm. I breezed right through the book and may just become a fan. the beauty business is HUGE and nary a modern woman of any ilk can be considered on the sidelines- everyone brushes their teeth, washes their face and hair- this is not an elite category- Indeed the items needed for absolute basic items constitute a hefty enough portion of take home pay and information is power- we need "scientists" like the author to navigate through the aisles of the real world

3-0 out of 5 stars It Must Be Nice...
...to be this author.Godfrey-June's book starts strongly, with a brisk introduction to her Devil-Wears-Prada-ish experiences at Elle magazine. The dishiness wears off, however, when the author goes on about her reluctantly privileged lifestyle in her yuppie-hippy town. And a privileged lifestyle it is, with all of the free products, fashion shows, etc.(Instead of bemoaning the hundreds of beauty products that clutter their homes, why don't beauty editors donate unwanted things to a local women's shelter?)This book is a fun read for fans of Lucky magazine, and the book definitely promotes the magazine. The sidebars are actually fun additions to her book, and her writing style is fresh and casual.Overall, a fine beach or bus book; something to breeze through and return to the library or pass on to someone else.

Editorial Review

Janet Luhrs provides a thoughtful and practical guide to simplifying our busy lives. Luhrs stresses that living simply is not about being frugal, living on a tight budget, or a modest income. Rather, living simply is being fully aware of what you're doing and why you're doing it. Luhrs demonstrates through many real-life examples how you can redesign your life and learn to savor every moment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Living Bible
I signed up for a Barnes and Noble online course on Simple Living that used this book.I checked out a copy of this book from the library (I was already frugal, before buying the book!) and sat down to begin the course. After about five minutes, I realized that there were far too many people signed up for the course. It would take me hours just to read my fellow "classmates" posts. So, in an attempt to bring greater simplicity to my life, I dropped the course!Turned off by the bland cover of the book and its hefty size, I went to return it to the library. In the parking lot of the library, I took one last look at it.It drew me in.Instead of returning it, I have kept it and renewed it several times. The book is now on my wishlist for my birthday next month.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide Full of Ideas - Not a perfect book, however
I am in my mid-twenties and a graduate student. I have, for a very long time, wanted to save more money and live a life that is less driven by getting things done and one that is more focused on living life right now and enjoying those things that are important to me.I think a lot of time the right book comes along at the right time in our lives, and for me, this book was it. It provides lots of ideas - some about being just a little more simple and some that are about pretty drastic changes. Another reviewer is right that this is not likely a book that people who want to live very radically simple lives would find valuable. This is for folks who still want electricity, maybe a car, some nice "things," and so on.I found it very readable with lots of ideas, and also a very exciting philosophy - driving home the idea that we lose sight of the point of life - that for most people, it doesn't make sense to work a lot, to get lots of money, to get a bigger house and lots of stuff.Rather, we can be more content (and have a lighter environmental impact) by working only as much as we need to in order to meet the needs that are basic and the needs that are most important to us. Thus, if having a nice car is important, save for that and cut down on expensive clothes. It encourages you to thin of life in terms of tradeoffs. If I work 50 hours a week, I can have a big house, but much less time to live in it or be with family. Is this worth it.It also helps to counter conventional wisdom about the kind of money it takes to live a "decent" life.It challenges assumptions and offers new way to think about things. The book did not come across as preachy to me. I think you can take from it what is helpful in your life - it is like a sourcebook or reference book.Take what works for you and leave the rest.I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would not buy again
I was offended by the "humor" in the book.At one point she refers to the babies of mothers who could not breastfeed in a certain culture and states that the babies would usually die, but that at least they were spared a lifetime of gastrointestinal illnesses. I pretty much put the book down after reading that.In general, I found the book to be overly preachy, and there was nothing new in the advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook on makeupI've ever seen
I think people like to bag this book simply because Cindy Crawford wrote it.It's like "oh, she's a model, professionals do her makeup and she has to be too dumb to write anything worthwhile anyway".Actually this is the best book I've ever seen on makeup and the one I'd pick above any other to recommend to anyone and I'm a qualified makeup artist myself.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I love this book! I think because Cindy Crawford has so much experience with the world of beauty that she cuts through all the bull, and gets to basic stuff if you want to wear make-up but do not want to look like a floozy. Plus, she gives great tips on buying makeup, using makeup, etc. She gives unvarnished but very helpful advice. It is the best book I have seen on beauty tips. Plus the pictures and silver cover are cool too. I am surprised it is not on shelves anymore. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to makeup.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for basic instruction
this book is good if you want to learn the basics of makeup use. crawford tells you how to apply, what to apply with, what to apply on, what to buy, etc...all the basics. the color tear sheet in the back is good to take when going shopping--it gives handy tips on picking the right products. as other reviewers have said, the pictures tend to be more glamour shots than instruction, but the photos of the actual makeup products and tools are good. If you are looking for a basic instruction book, this is good. If you already know the basics, you maybe should look elsewhere. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as informative as I thought
I'm wondering if the previous reviewers did any online research on the subject before purchasing the book & giving it rave reviews. There's very little information in the book that I can't easily find online. A good/reputable essential oil supplier's website would contain much more information than this book. The descriptions of only a handful essential oils are also extremely lacking. Somtimes she'd say, this oil is usually good for xxx, but I tried just the opposite and it still worked well (paraphrase). But she offers absolutely no explanation why it still worked for her when the oil is typically used for something else. She casually uses her own experience as examples frequently, but offers no detailed explanation. Often she just says, I like this, or I don't like this. Again, no reason why she liked or disliked something. She simply doesn't sound like a professional writer to me (almost airy), and I expected a lot more from the book, especially after reading the other rave reviews. There are many books out there not even specifically focused on the subject of essential oils, but still contain much more useful & detailed information than this book. Total disappointment. Unless you're too lazy to do any online research and only want to touch the surface of what essential oils are, then this may be the book for you. Afterall, it does contain a small amount of information in an organized fashion, but I could've written this book in a week. Otherwise, don't waste your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much advice
I was disappointed in this book- not much practical advice, almost nil hair cutting advice. He advises not washing hair every day. Ugh! I see plenty of unwashed hair and it isn't attractive. I don't use shampoo every day, but do use conditioner. Also, he is a big believer in setting hair with rollers. If you ask most males, their opinion is that women in hair rollers are very unattractive-good way to ruin a marriage. The hair styles are unimaginative (and need a set). Often he sends you to a "professional stylist" rather than helping you take care of hair on your own (Gray hair-difficult to color, go to professional.) Didn't learn anything new-all seems to be common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Nick Chavez Followers!
Nick Chavez, is an actual Stylist who owns his on salon in Beverly Hills, whom I discovered through QVC. His products are excellent and so is his book.He has done an excellent job.His book is beautifully illustrated, and his tips and directions on how to syle and take care of your hair are easy to follow. He sincerely cares about a woman's hair and how she treats it. Nick covers every hair texture, which many books do not.One added bonus for those of us who are followers of Nick, he includes a wonderful little bio about how he got started, his relationship with QVC, and his family (wonderful picture of his beautiful family). Buy the book, his tips do work, and buy his products!

1-0 out of 5 stars His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect)

5-0 out of 5 stars No other book is as good
I think the biggest complaint or criticism of Dr. Perricone's recommendations is the excessive cost of supplements and creams. With regard to the supplements, Dr. Perricone gives recommendations on the vitamins and supplements you should take. I spent some time looking at all the ingredients listed and realized that you can get those same supplements, vitamins, and minerals at your local health food / vitamin store GNC carries a lot of them get DMAE here and so does Trader Joe's you can get the Complete EFA essential fatty acids, Alpha Lipoic Acid, but does not have DMAE, and Costco good price for CoEnzyme Q10! The prices are much more reasonable. In fact, on the nvperricone website, the vitamin packets list all the ingredients and the amount of product included in the packets. In his book, he makes dosage recommendations too. I hope this helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book
I became interested in Dr. Perricone theory once I saw him on PBS over a year ago. He was convincing enough to make me, old sceptic, get his book and follow his advice... I recommend The Perricone Promise to anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle and have younger looking skin. It is actually a continuation of the idea presented in his previous book Perricone Prescription.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is nice that we finally have an updated book...
I felt that the book was basically the same as the previous edition, with the exception of aromatherapy, and electric filing.Unfortionatly no one book can give all of the information that is required about a subject. That is what teaching is all about.I generally supplement the material from other books, and Florida law so our students stay on the right path.Over all I would have to say that this book was above average, and addressed many of the changes in the industry to date.

I have taught for years and have been impressed by Milady's dedication to the Industry, until now. This new text book was headed in the right direction, with the addition of some fantastic photos for nail diseases, but it missed it's usual high standards drastically. The chapters, especially those most important to the foundation of education, such as sanitation issues and safety issues towards clients, fall far too short.A school is intended to give the basis of a long and safe career in this industry, yet this book irresponsibley dedicated more time to air brushing (which is difficult at best to learn via a book) then it did to the fundamentals of salon safety for both the tech and the client.I am very very disappointed. The chapters seem to be started off in the right direction, then are seemingly cut severly short. The book is choppy and incomplete at best.Sad to see such unprofessional results from a long time industry leader who has continually been the one who set the standards and raised the bar. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Is Beautiful
This book starts with the premise that everyone has unique qualities that are beautiful.Rather than expend large sums of money, suffer the pain and risks and possible dissatisfaction of permanent surgical options, the author suggests using makeup. Sharing techniques she honed as a professional make-up artist, the author takes regular people, wrinkles and all, and transforms them. Each step is photographed and described in the text and the make-overs are impressive. The models include the author, her family and friends and she addresses everything from covering tattoos and age spots to enhancing the eyes, straigthening the nose and enhancing the bust line.
3-0 out of 5 stars still nothing that new
I bought this book for the purpose of gaining new and insightful makeup tricks and tips. I didn't find them in this book. I own many makeup books and have learned many techniques over the years. Unfortunately this book didn't really impress me. Every make-up book explains what foundation is and why you need to pluck your brows, but I need something new! I wouldn't recommend it if you own at least one of the popular makeup books

3-0 out of 5 stars not for everyday looks
i enjoyed reading through the book once....it was "interesting" but it's not something i would constantly refer back to because i felt the makeup was too heavy and the "tricks" were too over the top...BUT if you work in a business where you MUST look different say for photos or whatever then this would be helpful. i personally have adopted more of a "take what you have and work with it stance" so i would never pile on this much make-up for the sake of appearing different. it's not a bad book just not something i'd use for everyday or really even special occasion good looks...the content of this book would have been great as a tv program you watch once then move on with your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!
Wonderful book for those who want suggestions and guidance to living a more natural life. I am an owner of a natural lifestyle website Life-Thyme - and this book fits right along with with so much of what makes life beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Uplifting
This is a beautiful book with a balanced approach to aging, beauty, and health. (I've happily used Dr. Hauschka products for almost 20 years, so I'll admit to being biased.) Highly recommended to those who use the products as well as to those who would like to learn more about a holistic lifestyle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polynesian Historical Documentation
This is an excellent book as a historical refernce for Polynesian Tattooing. It offers nothing new but puts the historical information from previously published books on the subject in one book.I reccomend it for anyone interested in Polynesian tattooing as not the definitive, but a good book.I foucuses too more on Maori Tattoing and less on others but that it has alot and shows the that this is a book that doesn't have much new content, just a combined resource. This is also a good reference into Polynesian culture bcause the Tatau was not a fad, or in anyway negative in Polynesia it was interwoven inteo life as a positive art form historically and today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed Book
At a time when there is a cultural rage for "tribal tattooing,"there is a scarcity of materials on Polynesian tattooing. This book finally addresses that need. The book contains many historical photographsof examples of 7 different polynesian culture's uses of tattoo.Briefsummaries examine each area's history and methods for tattooing. The bookis very attractively done.Recommended for anyone serious about tattooing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping tradition alive
It i great to know there are books like this that are out that can help the younger polynesian generation learn about their ansetries art and culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
When I got this book I was not expecting nothing more than narrow minded approach to etiquete and "good habits", instead I found a delightful reading full of sarcastic humor and useful tips. I think this book is definitely a surprise and maybe that is why some readers find it odd or disappointing, but I can assure you it is not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Metrosexual Guide review
This book is AWESOME. Clear, concise and well written. Includes EVERYTHING a man should know about food, fashion, travel, style, grooming, health, fitness, art, etiquette, you name it. I use is as a guideline for everything. Easy to read with a good sense of humor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but...
This book is full of useful advice, but do not mistake it for instruction on how to become a gentleman. Despite what one would think, I have come to appreciate this term "Metrosexual" as it distinguishes those who use manners and the appearance of urbane sophistication for their own self-advancement from true gentlemen.True gentlemen show respect for themselves and others, bringing the light of civilization to a darkening world, and leaving society better for their efforts.A gentleman's manners, urbanity and consideration are a lifestyle, not a mask that is donned for selfish convenience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masks of Bali
Masked drama performances have been an important ritual on Bali for over a thousand years.Slattum presents a gallery of fifty significant, visually stunning masks photographed at both private collections and in Balinese museums.Explanatory text accessible to Westerners delves into the artistry involved in creating these intricate pieces, their symbolic and cultural significance, and the elevated role they assume in village ceremonial life. These magical, totemic masks have come to represent Bali to many visitors, who are spellbound by their exotic, gargoyle-like demeanor and their entertaining presence in evening dance spectacles (and in every art and craft shop window all around the island).
