I just got this book. Thought I'd try it for prevention. I don't have any wrinkles or sagging yet. One thing I noticed that made me very leery: The people shown in the before and after pictures are wearing the exact same clothing, including accessories. The pictures were supposedly taken 7 days apart. I e-mailed the company and asked about this; I told them it made me think some Photoshop had been used. I was told they purposely had the models wear the same clothes and makeup. Ummm...OK. Also, the instructional pictures in this book don't really show you anything. In fact, most of the sequential photos are identical. I asked about this too, and I was told to buy the DVD. Ummm...OK.
5-0 out of 5 stars Changed me forever!!
I cant believe how incredible 15 min. a day can change your life. I work out 1 hr. a day in the gym and never had as many compliments as I do now since I started doing the Facercise program. People say I look younger and have a smoother face . Also my skin color is more vibrant with a healthy glow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ladies and Their Hats
Coming from a hat wearing tradition, I fully appreciated "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats".My hat was a pill box a la Jacqueline Kennedy which shows how old I am.Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the photographs and the women's stories.Hat wearing is a fine tradition and very much a part of Black culture that Michael Cunningham has captured in all its glory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crowns truly deserves a Crown
We are performing the play Crowns here at the Unicorn Theatre here in Kansas City, MO as I write my review. It has been sold out every night and we had to add another week and it is sold out as well. I play the part of Mother Shaw. I have to say that before the play I was not one who wore hats but NOW!!!!!. The lines we say come directly from the book. This book is the best read I have come across in a long time. I had to order it here on Amazon because all the book stores in KC are sold out!! They love the play and they love the book. A book that all black women ( especially those of us who grew up in the church) can identify. We have all seen a Mother Shaw, Wanda, Jeanette and Mabel in the church wearing their hats. Regina Taylor really hit the nail on the head. This is one role that I can truly say I have enjoyed playing. God bless you Regina and keep them coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice!
This book brings back memories of being a young girl and seeing the church ladies entering the church wearing those extraordinary hats. Being blond and fair didn't stop me from mingling among the congregation just to see the hats and hear the singing. The hats in this book are so familiar. The stories are new and give life to those hats. This book would make an excellent gift. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Textbook or Reference for someone on the beginning.
I didn't buy this book and I'm glad I didn't. I'm not much of a textbook reader and this is definitely it. Contains basic details about things you should know but if you're really into skincare and have read too many books before this one, this is not the book for you. It should be for someone on the Skin Care 101 or someone looking for a reference book. So bad coz I'd really want to like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Lark has a series of books presenting well photographed, contemporary fine crafts. This book is a good survey of what is being created in brooches (compared to the bracelet book, which is not at all complete or even a small survey of contemporary work and should have been a gallery brochure). If you are teaching in art history or fine crafts areas, this is an important resource for students, collectors, museums, and libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SOURCE OF InSPiRATION!
Amazing examples of all kind of imaginable brooches. You will startcreating your own.

2-0 out of 5 stars 500 Brooches Review
This book, as all others in this series, is put together very well.But...the brooches are the poorest examples of exemplary contemporary artwork I have seen.In my opinion, 98% of the entries are unprofessional in their initial design and completion. Most are unwearable and impractical as brooches and are the farthest stretch of someone's artistic imagination in regards to fine artwork.Putting it bluntly, the bulk of the "artwok" in this book is rubbish.Embarrassing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
A must have for beginers, even for therapists that have been in business for a while. Great marketing ideas and tips. This book has changed my practice, by not only giving me the confidence I needed but also to be able to follow through with ideas and the know how on how to do it in a more professional manner. Awesome book, kudos to Monica Reseberry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it and couldn't put it down
It's been the best book on massage marketing that I have read and better than any massage marketing class that I have attended. I really couldn't put it down and spent all my down time reading. Most of the suggestions are in practice by many, I'm sure, but it's just some common sense advice that she gives or maybe just a positive attitude towards our service oriented careers that has made a big difference for me.I can't say that since I've read the book (one month ago) that I've had a surge in clients, but it's made the clients I have more satisfied. And my head is definitely filled with new ideas.

Editorial Review

In the latter part of the 20th century, the adage "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" has evolved far beyond its original intent as an admonition against false vanity to become a cultural manifesto used to explain phenomena as diverse as the art of Andy Warhol and the rise of a multi-billion-dollar cosmetics industry. But is there something more to human reaction to beauty than a conditioned response to social cues? Yes, says Harvard Medical School psychologist Nancy Etcoff. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not scientifically robust, but maybe a good fit for a dinner talk
"Survival of the prettiest" is a very provocative title indeed and it is also a very ambitious subject to say the least. I expected from this book an identification of a phenomenon called "survival of the prettiest" if there is indeed such a thing, and if there is, a robust account of how it can be explained scientifically, because the subtitle of this book is no less than "the science of beauty." But, as a whole, this book fails to give us any satisfactory identification or explanation of the so-called "survival of the prettiest." In fact, I find the book often drifts away to somewhat trivial episodes of some biological or sociological findings to sustain readers' interest. I don't see how such things can be put together to establish the author's ultimate claim that our biological and sociological existence is so designed that the prettiest have been assured a better chance to survive to form the current world. Chapters are not thematically connected with each other and are not well-organized to deliver what the author intends to get across. I expected somehow solid scientific backing for the author's claim, but generally said, this book is a very light read that may not be called the "science" of beauty. I have no objection, however, for the readers who just look for some interesting subjects for light talks with families and friends at the dinner table. This book may be a good fit for that purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is beauty an honest advertiser?
Etcoff does a great job showing how our response to beauty is innate and deeply connected with our urge to reproduce. But I would have wished for a bit more exploration of the way beauty also might fool us. For example, she talks about men preferring women with hourglass shapes and more feminine features, because it signals health and fertility. But then she doesn't give information about whether this is true. Are more feminine looking women more fertile in reality? Are they healthier? We don't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's hot

4-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of information, but not recommended for beginners.
I picked up this book at the library and I am impressed with the sheer amount of information Cavitch has stuffed into it. I learned things in this book that I haven't seen anywhere else, such as the idea to cut your PVC pipe in half to make it easier to remove your soap. I also found the information about petroleum lip balms. They fix the problem temprarily but ulitmately dry out your lips so you become addicted to it. That floored me because I AM addicted to lip balm! She gives us a recipe for a simple lip balm that is composed of beeswax and oil. I can't wait to try it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Most thorough soapmaking book available
I have been making soap for several years now and have checked out 15+ books from the library on this topic. The soapmaker's companion is the most comprehensive resource I have ever read, and has enough of the basics for a beginner as well. The recipes included range from simple (basic bars) to complex (glycerin soap).I am a chemist, so I appreciate the chapter on the properties of all kinds of oils and the instructions on calculating the right amount of lye.If you want to make soap, this is the best book to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than I Bargained For!
I never realized that I could make my own beauty products!I thought they had to be manufactured in a "laboratory"!Well, the kitchen is the only laboratory one needs. Not only was I very tired of paying outlandish prices for skin moisturizers and beauty creams, some of them actually irritated my skin more than helped.I searched the web for books on "homemade" personal care products.I thought, 'what have I got to lose?'The facial moisturizer recipe in this book was extremely easy (and fun) to make, and ... my skin has never felt or looked better.I have made many of the products in this book. Not only do they all work, but the ingredients are readily available, simple to assemble and inexpensive to make.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving this book!
I became interested in making my own beauty products for about one year now which is about when i bought this book.It is truly incredible. It is full of interesting and easy to follow recipes. The list of beauty ingredients in abcorder is wonderful because it exlains the use of items and where you can find them. I just cant stop reading this book over and over again. I try new recipes and then read more and try more.I bought Cox's other book "beauty for the seasons" (gift giving) it too is great, but this one is the best beginner and experienced person's choice.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars SalonOvations Day Spa Techniques..independent seller
I just recieved my copy of SalonOvations Day Spa Techniques and at this point I've only browsed the pages. It looks very interesting and useful. However, I'm really writing at this time to rave about the seller I received it from; Leslie66, who wrote me a kind email after the sale, letting me know about the prompt and effecient method by which the book was mailed out. And after having recieved it, I can say it is in excellent condition and appears to be everything the seller advertised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book

5-0 out of 5 stars The Japanese Tattoo
This is a visually stimulating book - for both the casual observer, who will probably be horrified at some of the work, and for the Tattoo Collector - who will be inspired to new heights by the glorious array of Classical Japanese Artworks presented herein.Printed on heavy stock with beautiful color separation, this is truly an important reference of the Japanese repertoire.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Photos, Weak Text
If you have no experience with horimono, this book gives some excellent images focusing mostly on the works of three masters (only one, Horiyoshi III Sensei of Yokohama still actively tattoos). The book is worth buying for the images alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny and More
Not only is this fine book a landmark in terms of photographic technique, it documents classic Japanese tattoo imagery, much as it has been for centuries. With less contrast and perhaps darker pigments than we are now used to in the West, this is traditional Japanese tattooing at its best. The themes in the symbolism are timeless and the close-up views of the tattoos are so detailed you feel like you could actually reach out and touch the skin.Absolutely fabulous and one of my favorite tattoo books. ...
