5-0 out of 5 stars Best Make Up Book For a Teen
This book is truely a great make up boook for teens. Definetly a good book for beginners. Of course, if u are already a girl that reads fashion/beauty magazines, then there isnt anything new here...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teens
I bought this as a gift for my 12 year-old niece. I read it before I gave it to her to make sure it was appropriate. I LOVED THIS BOOK. Bobbi addresses the girls as peers, tells them to love their looks, particularly those things which make them "unique"- freckles, a strong nose, etc., and urges them to use make-up primarily as an enhancement. She also discusses skin care, hair care, and shows before and after pictures. I want to get the one for adults, and I already plan on buying one for my own daughter when she is older.

5-0 out of 5 stars For what it was I like it
I got this book when I was 16 or 17 years old, and I liked it.I've never been much for fashion or glamour, but this book focused as much on looking and being healthy as it did on making your self look really done up every day. Also, the author really encourages girls to really love their individual, unique beauty, and discourages doing anything to alter the way you look naturally.I suppose I havent read many books on the subject, it may be pretty standard for these books, but it sure is a change of pace from so many other messages women and young girls are constantly bombarded with.Sometimes I still pull this book out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a bad haircut and here you are...
What is it about a bad haircut ~ I mean a truly, truly BAD haircut, so bad my husband didn't even recognize me when I walked out of the salon ~ that drives people to "Haircutting for Dummies"?I know I'm not the only one who has been in this DIRE situation. This is a good guide, a little confusing in places, but that confusion might be me, but overall a very helpful guide. If only this book could grow out bad haircuts... at least it can help fix them.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is poorly written and confusing.
I bought this book to save a little cash by learning to cut my own hair. In 300+ pages this book does not give any basic instruction (implied in the title "For Dummies") but instead goes on for almost the entire length of the book about cutting very specific styles in an innane step-by-step "instruction" that nobody but the writer could possibly follow. Waste of time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's ok but don't spend the money
I took out a copy from the library, it's worth it as a library book, has some helpful tips, but no reason to spend $15 on it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What to Wear?
I enjoyed this book and found it informative. However if you have a general knowledge of the time then some information will not be helpful. For instance the author spoke of mourning clothes and some of the different stages.I believe most people who are interested in the time already know such facts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
I must disagree with some of the previous reviewers on a number of issues about this book on women's clothing styles of the Civil War period.
3-0 out of 5 stars A good resource, BUT...
...take it with a grain of salt. This is an excellent overview of period fashions, but unfortunately it's become the reenactor's bible. Ms. Leisch is not a historian and I find it difficult to believe that one person found the absolute truth from such a relatively small sampling of photos. Yes, Godey's Lady's Book was the "Vogue" of today, but since the dawn of tim less-affluent women have copied the fashions of the well-to-do in more affordable fabrics. I've seen reenactors chastised or expelled from events "because you're too old for this outfit" etc using ONLY this book as the basis. (I have a daguerreotype of my great-great-grandmother, age 35, middle class, in a Zouave jacket, with her hair parted on the side, by the way) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenominal!
This book is amazing!I'm not even completely through the first section and I find that it's been well worth the money.Even if you never plan on designing your own sweaters this book is worth reading. The explanations of how the various factors such as body shape, 'standard' measurements and the drape of different yarn types affect the finished project will help anyone improve on the fit of even published patterns as well as improve your satisfaction with the final product.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
When I first bought this book, my knitting experience was not matured enough to appreciate the depth of the information contained in this book.To be honest, I was even dissapointed since the style of sweaters shown was not stylish, the models wearing them were not stylish commercial models. The book is full of English text and has no eye-candy photos. So it had been sitting in my bookshelf for almost one year,I even thought about selling it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for would-be designers!
I checked this book out of the library since I am fascinated with the idea of designing my own sweaters. But this book offers much, much more. It teaches the basics of color, it tells what colors work for you and why. Then there is a section on figure types. What sweater designs flatter and which do not. And the chapter does not have just the usual hour glass, pear, top heavy distinctions, there's the rectangle, the triangle, the oval, the tiffany diamond.... It is almost garanteed the you will find your body type in the list.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to Reah Over and Over
I bought this book, thinking it was written in the present era. I seriously got about halfway through before I realized how old it was. But that in no way took away from my enjoyment of this book. I've read it half a dozen times now, and it's always a complete delight. This book is timeless in its advice (well, mostly) and I believe a lot of people, and not just women, would benefit from reading it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys their feminity even just a little bit. You'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Guide!
This book was so old fashioned, mostly in the beginning that it was entertaining.I did skim over some parts but found the book to be a great read with many things we all need to be reminded of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting book.
Before you purchase this book, you may want to know it was first published in 1938.I didn't know this when I bought it, but I am glad I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Hair Has Been Rescued!
I have read many hair care books, and this by far is the "ultimate" in hair care and maintenance guides.I have implemented many of Mr. Fletcher's suggestions into my daily hair care routine, and have experienced tremendous results. My hair has gotten longer, stronger, and more lustrous. My only regret is that I did not discover this book sooner. Thank you, Mr. Fletcher!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste
I bought this book from the man himself. Not only is he arrogant, but his book made proposterous suggestions (standing on ones head to grow hair) and not enough information about how to grow hair. Save your money and buy No Lye: The African American Woman's Guide To Natural Hair Care by Tulani Kinard instead.

"Plastic surgery isn't the only way to keep the aging process at bay. With the proper care you can have fabulous skin in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond," promises author Nicholas Perricone, M.D., assistantclinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. In hisopening chapters, Perricone explains why skin wrinkles and sags--a combinationof factors including the passage of time, stress, poor nutrition, excess alcoholconsumption, sleep deprivation, and exposure to cigarette smoke, sunlight, andpollution. I loved this book. I knew you should drink lots of water and eat fish. But staying away from pasta... I had no clue. This book is real informative and a must read for anyone concerned with aging. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good start
I think the Wrinkle Cure will motivate you to adopt new, better ways of eating. It seems to be addressed to people who have never heard of the benefits of eating fruit-and-vegetable diet. However, it seems that the author is a little behind when it comes to the vast amount of information concerning availability of on herbal skin care (i.e. green tea is not only good for your skin but it also anticancerous...)All in all it is a good book for beginner. For further reading I suggest books written by herbalist experts in natural remedies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Resource for Historical Costuming
I never thought I would ever sew. However, my brother and I got the grandiose idea that we would make ourselves leather buff coats to wear during re-enactments with our 17th century living history group. We needed a pattern and started with research at the local college library and found this book. Although neither one of us had ever sewn before, we were able to take the coat pattern from this book, adapt it to fit our bodies and sew a coat for ourselves out of buff leather. There is a whole chapter on 17th century clothing which has patterns for breeches, doublets, cassacks and sword hangars. It also has photos of actual museum pieces. If I could use the patterns in the book, than anyone with any skill will have no problems. This book is an good resource for those wishing to sew their own period clothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Source for Men's Clothing
I was a little surprised when I recieved this book that it is not quite as beefy as Norah Waugh's _Cut of Women's_ clothes.I was however very pleased with it's cotent.About half of the patterns seem to be taken frompre-1780s and the other half from 1840 on.This was a little disappointingas I was looking for some good Regency Jackets for my husband. There arehow ever several frock coats that I can easily ajust the cut to to get thelook I want. This is a great book as far as I can tell but I am stillundecided as to whether it is worth the steep price tag. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Text on Perfume
Good exposition of history of perfume, basic types, and so on. Good instructions on how to start making your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lets think a little, before rating
Some Amazon reviewers seem to miss completely the point of the books they are rating. One example: among the reviews of a book on yoga for (very) fat people, some commentators criticize the author for changing some of the classical positions. If one can work out the correct positions, why is he(she) meddling into, and messing up, the references for less fortunate people?
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for one who is familiar with synthetics AND naturals
I am only writing this as a guide for people who have read the other reviews.I am going to buy this book, as well as some other ones, because I used to make perfume for a major U.S. candle company, and it is maddening to not remember what I used to make!!!I feel that for aromatherapy, natural oils are essential, but there is nothing wrong with synthetics for sachets, candles, and other non-topical applications. If you shine sunlight, or a flashlight through a prism, are the colors any different?Such is the quandry concerning synthetic versus natural. And many people would benefit from knowing the various groups, or families, because everything smells different on different people.I once had access to an out-of-print, French perfume chemical handbook, costing hundreds of dollars, and also, hundreds of handwritten french perfume formulas, made obsolete by modern methods. So I am trying to replace that lost information, and begin to identify the scents in perfumes all over again. There is a nice selection of books available - a good place to start! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Love Denim
Anyone with an interest in denim will find this wonderful book to be a very easy and enlightening read. The pictures are all bright, clear, and of high quality. There are several great images of musicians and celebrities wearing denim (Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis) as well as close-up shots of vintage jeans (The first known pair of Levis!). Not only are the pictures great, but the book is written in a manner which is easy to digest. The subject ranges from the history of denim to current trends. It also contains a glossary of terms for quick lookup so if you need to be reminded what selvage or sanfordized is, it's there for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information
I read this book simulataneously with Rochelle Harpers "Sew the New Fleece." There is much overlap and both books are good. Cornwell's book had a very useful section in the beginning that lists all the mills that make synthetic fleece and pile fabrics, who they supply (e.g., who supplies LL Bean, who supplies Patagonia, etc.), and what the various characteristics are of each type of fabric--she knows what she is talking about in this area. As far as fleece construction techniques, I thought that Harper's book beat out Cornwell's with more options and details. Cornwell's had a lot of "cheater" shortcuts that I wasn't interested in since I want to make good, solid ready-to-wear style outdoor garments. Also, Cornwell's focus was too much on the baby-bunting/"fashion" jacket/granddaughter's outfit-type projects rather than the serious outdoor garment scene. Many of the photographed garments screamed "I'm homemade!," and she spends too many pages on techniques like "fleece sculpturing" that could only have applications in tacky, crafty, homemade looking projects. If your goal is serious outdoor wear, Harper edges out Cornwell, but the serious sewer will want to read both.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I just purchased this title and can't put the book down.It is extremely thorough and includes everything you could possibly need to know including identifying quality fabric, choosing the correct needle, troubleshooting, inserting zippers and embellishing. A definite must read for fleece lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond a doubt the best book on polar fleece on the market!
There is no question, the techniques and practical guides in this book are the best I've read.Nancy has comprehensive and detailed photos for each technique! And the ideas are todays look and ready to wear professional.I would urge anyone who is sewing on fleece to hurry and purchase this one.No affiliation just a happy customer! Although this book seemed to steal a bit of material from others--like anecdotes from another pageant book I know--it was EXTREMELY detailed and helpful in getting prepared and realizing that IMAGE IS EVERYTHING in a pageant. Honestly, I can't see how I competed without buying this book first. This book practically gives the formula for success, even how to stand and walk in swimsuit! I can't wait for my next competition!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!
Anna Stanley's insight as a contestant, judge, and director makes her book an outstanding guide for contestants. Her coverage on each phase of competition has thoroughly prepared me for my state and national crown. The appendix of resources serves as an effective aid for contestants with their pre-pageant packing and research."The Crowning Touch" is a valuable reference source for all pageant affiliatesand would be a wonderful edition to your library. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Gentleman
Flusser's "Dressing the Man" is vastly superior in terms of both content and comprehensiveness. Generally speaking, I found the "Gentelemen" book series to be either common sense or just plain wrong. If you want a very short reference guide, though, this is better than nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Additional Resource
I bought this for my husband (the dapper clothes horse) just because I saw it in my Gold Box.He is a strict adherent to Flusser, so I took a risk and ordered this because it was low priced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Amusing and worthwhile
This book is both helpful and entertaining. Its style, which amounts to a compilation of aphorisms--some of them clever--makes it an easy read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks photos and realistic illustrations
This book lacks photos and realistic illustrations.I had a hard time visualizing what Feldon meant by long waisted, short waisted, and the stylized stick figure, two dimensional illustrations did not make the difference obvious. Before and after real life photos would help. Also, given that 60% of Americans are very overweight, dealing with large women's concerns would be helpful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to your library of style books
IMO this is not a stand-alone book, but a resource to add to a library on style. That's fine, because learning to develop your style and what is flattering on you is a larger process than one volume can hope to cover. This is about fine-tuning details on your wardrobe to make sure you are choosing the most flattering looks, but she gives express "permission" to break any & all of them. It's written in a warm & humorous way--she's not taking this too seriously, and you shouldn't either. It's not a judgemental or critical book on weight or size.Caveats: Mandarin collars & buttoned-up looks are not good on busty women, who look better in an open neckline. In the search for the slimming Almighty Vertical Line, prints can keep the eye moving, and thus miss lumps & bumps.Black, black, black can look funeral, and is too dark next to the face for most women, especially for us who are over 30.I would recommend this in addition to Brenda Kinsel's "Brenda's Wardrobe Companion" to develop your own style (highly recommended) and a book on wardrobing (such as "I Don't Have a Thing to Wear," but I'm not totally happy with any current book on wardrobe capsules to be honest.)

2-0 out of 5 stars The unbroken line of black
This book does succeed in telling women how to create an unbroken line of monochromatics, which creates the illusion of a longer, leaner body. However, it is not in the books's scope to tell you how to flatter your unique shape. If you are a woman who is round all around, or thick top and down without much waist definition, these tips will work great. However, any curvaceous woman, like a pear or an hourglass, might wish to purchase "The Pocket Stylist" instead, as the advice there is not to make you look leaner as much as flatter your existing body type. As an hour glass, these tips made me look boxy, much leaner, but boxy as though I were shaped like a ruler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for Hairloss
Honestly, I don't think I really would have needed this book. When I first picked it up, I had beautiful waist-length black hair. I, striving for perfection, read it through and eventually bought it. I was completely hooked by the time I read about shampoo companies and the dangerous chemicals leading to hairloss. After easing into it slowly by making the essential shampoo and using the apple vinegar based rinse, I realized that my scalp stopped being so itchy and my hair stopped being so greasy. Flakes disappeared, and after I started using the cayenne based solution every week, my acne even started to clear up. This book has served me well. I don't think I shall ever go to store-bought shampoo ever again. This book should appeal to more than the balding demographic that it already does - everyone should take advantage of this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of useful information
I've been steadily losing hair since my twenties (I'm a woman in my early thirties). I attribute the loss mainly to stress and periods of extreme dieting which are, thankfully, behind me (the dieting, not the stress). I've tried seeing trichologists who mainly prescribed massage, expensive hair treatments and iron supplements, but without much improvement. Most of the thinning has occurred around my hairline -- if I pull my hair back into a pony tail I see areas of bare scalp. All in all I have a pretty healthy lifestyle with exercise, good diet, etc. I decided to give this book a try as a last resort, and because I'm on a limited budget. I Now that I've given you some background, on to the review:
3-0 out of 5 stars Too good to be true?
I was very excited when I saw this book. There is a lot of great information in it and it makes a lot of sense. But now, after trying some of the recipes, I'm not so sure about it. The shampoo recipe made my hair so oily and heavy that I had to rewash my hair with my regular store bought brand. It does say to use only 1 teaspoon per washing and I used more, but I had to use a lot to get all of my hair lathered. The second recipe I tried was the flaxseed volumizer gel, and it was impossible to strain so I ended up just throwing the whole mess away. My third disaster, which I recommend that you DO NOT try, was the flour and water conditioner. Maybe I did something wrong, but when I tried to rinse it out of my hair it turned into something resembling rubber cement. I thought I was going to have to cut it out. My boyfriend spent 1 1/2 hours slowing working it out of my hair using a comb, water, and half a bottle of conditioner to soften it a little bit. Now I'm a little skeptical about trying any other of the recipes. I will make sure next time to only try a small portion of my hair first and not my whole head. Also, the cost to buy all of the initial ingredients is considerable. However, they will last for quite a while. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basics Bookof major muscles and their function
This is a great book for the novice to see the major muscles and how they work in the body or for the more advanced anatomist that would like a review/quick look at them.Information is not dumbed down though just gives you the basic facts and a little extra to help put things in perspective and give you a better big picture understanding.Like that the pictures are clear.I love that he has practical applications sections on each like "body language weakness" which explains how one would act or look if have a weakness in certain muscle and "watch out" which explains movements that can injure the muscle discussed. Plus the other interesting helpful blurs like he explains the origin of the name.Definitely recommend this book.
