Linda Wells, the founder and editor-in-chief of Allure magazine, has put together a book filled with the best beauty secrets, tips, and tricks that she's come across since the magazine's launch fifteen years ago.Although Allure isn't an actual teen magazine, the beauty, style, fashion, and makeup tips that it contains are perfect for anyone who wants to look their best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Part expose, part confesional :-)
This book is fascinating on a few different levels.Alex Kuczynski (New York Times Style reporter) has done her research; she's dived into this industry and what makes it tick. She also admits to having work done herself and reveals about herself being a beauty junkie too (fat sucked out of her butt and eyelid lifts). She confesses to walking through New York worrying about her mortgage payment considering that she just spent an obscene amount of dough on cosmetic surgery.

This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good all around Beauty School book
Most of the chapters are well written and understandable.I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars My complaints for local hairstylists
For what the book taught hairstylists about cuts for round, and squared faces are totally wrong. If thte hair has to be styled to lift off the forehead, and come forward: All the hairstylists would do is leave bangs to the side of the client's face.Round faces should not have hair on top of hteir head. That is to crop up a spiky hairdo. To place some hair over the ears and cheeks is to make bangs on the side of the client's face.I have no idea what the editor meant by "keep the hair up on one side."I don't think round, and squared faces should have bangs at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need
This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important. You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have. ... I purchased this book a few years ago and browsed through it thinking, "Wow, great stuff!" But I never bothered to do the exercises at the end of each chapter (too much effort) and never finished more than a few chapters. Unpacking boxes after a recent move, I rediscovered the book and decided to give it another 'go'.

To achieve great financial success, you must dream big. Big dream bring big money. Small dream big small money. As simple as that. Are you dreaming big everyday?
4-0 out of 5 stars Author Strikes Familiar Cord
Dreaming the impossible dream is a favorite American pastime. Most of us never get any farther than merely dreaming. With the help of this book, we can discover what the author calls the "keys" to turning dreams into reality. He says these come from studying successful people. They seem simple enough, but taking the steps is always the difficult part. Steven Scott doesn't just give the reader the steps to take, he shows them how to do it. That's the hard part. Anybody can tell you what to do, it's making you do them that takes real motivation.

3-0 out of 5 stars What About Mental Fitness?
Whenever I read books like this, it makes me think again that doctor's just don't get it - they ignore the "big picture" of their patient's health and focus on treating symptoms with just Western medicine. That's their business, of course. It's up to consumers to get educated, on that I agree. We can do a lot by keeping physically fit, but what about mental fitness? Whoever talks about that? We are an aging population and more needs to be done to prevent memory loss, etc. Rather than obsolete books, I find services like Agogus.com much more "up" on the holistic perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy Program that shows RESULTS!!!
I am now in week 5 of this very fun and easy camp. I've been trying it out with some friends at work and we are all seeing results. I think in the first week I saw major changes following Dr. Loretta's advice of changing my pillow case and my detergent. I have had way fewer blemishes and cut out some acne products that were actually doing more harm than good in the redness department. I am highly recommending this book to EVERYONE! It is truly fabulous and even the adorable cover makes me smile (people have asked me why I look so happy and bright the past few days!). Hats off to Dr. Loretta for writing such a helpful manual for navigating the cosmetics world!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This book shows you how to take one piece and use it four ways, whether skirt, jacket or pants, and then how to accessorize. There is a section on undergarments, too. In front of the book, you'll find a bookmark with a list of essentials to buy, so take this with you when you shop. In the back of the book is a workbook for lists of things your friends like, how to choose what to keep in your closet and other helpful hints.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am Impressed
Great read. This author knows curly hair. She meticulously addresses some of curly heads major concerns and offers practical solutions. She even gives homemade recipes for hair products. I read this book in one day as I did A. Dickey's book, it was filled with great and accurate information.I compared the books to eachother and to what I know already and conclude these are writers that know their business - hair. What I love most is being able to learn new things, both Massey and Dickey make this possible.Worth every dollar and star!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed results
I have loose curly hair that tends to be on the dry side.I found that I had to modify the authors advice to get the desired results.I have psoriasis on my scalp and not using shampoo didn't work for me.My scalp was extremely itchy after using only conditioner.Furthermore, I am a runner and I found that I started to break out all over my scalp. The breakout cleared up after I started using shampoo again.I have to wash my hair every other day, but I did follow the advice to put conditioner on the ends before washing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hesitant skeptic, now a believer
I stumbled upon this book accidentally and I am so thankful I did. The web site [..] was mentioned in a letter written to Paula Begouin in her newsletter "Cosmetics Counter Update" (please note that Paula was NOT recommending the web site -- it was a reader who mentioned it and Paula published the letter). Paula is the Cosmetics Cop [..]and expert researcher in all things beauty. So, intrigued and curious, I went to the curly hair web site. It's the usual blather of bad-to-okay advice, hawking of various expensive products, etc. But I then found out about THIS book, so the trip to the web site was worth it. I decided to order it, since my hair lost all its curl after I moved to an island in Puget Sound, in the Seattle, WA area. You'd think that being surrounded by water, and in a more moist atmosphere than Southern California, I'd have MORE curls, not fewer. Alas, not true -- my hair would wave at best, hang with a few "angel wings" at worst (ladies, you know what I mean!). So, the book couldn't hurt, and it wasn't terribly expensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dress Sence 101
The book is good, and takes a couple of evenings to go through. It has what many "men's" magazines lack in the "how to fit" the right clothes with the right person, and insight into patterns, texture and color. If you haven't read a couple of issues of "men's" magazines and have never dressed formally and intend to do so you better read this or you will stick out of the crowd like a sore thumb. The book is comprehensive but could have included more, such as "adventurous" without looking old-fashioned (the old scarf to hide a sagging throat), for me it lacked clarity in the shoe department especially in the color section (unless black, dark tan and suede are the only choices...). The smart/casual section was good, but a clear miss in the sporty casual department where many of the <40 tend to dress much of their time and forced the need to live in a cold weather climate - lots of layers. Although I did not like the cartoon like drawings, the pictures where interesting to see how different nationalities have used clothes with different "shape's" in the past, although many are old Hollywood stars their shirts did seem to be somewhat oversized.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Maybe I'm scary!
I really looked forward to ordering this book after reading the blurb about it & couldn't wait to read it when it arrived. The author is absolutely gorgeous & looks fabulous in the pictures, but after reading it I felt as though it was intended fora much older person than myself (I'm in my 40"s). She essentially says not to wear a bathing suit unless you're actually going to swim, hide all skin as it's aged & crepey, cover up - you're not your daughter! In checking to see what part of the country she's from I discovered she lives in California like me,where a lot of the women are in very good shape without horrible skin & hopefully look very attractive showing a little skin somewhere. Tired of being called a Baby Boomer or worse? Christine Schwab has given us a new name that is everything we aspire to be: fun, sassy, fashion savvy. We are Grown-up Girls! In her latest book, Christine gives advice to the fashion-wary and applauds the fashion-aware with her message that it is possible to become ageless rather than older. This inspiring book is so much more than a list of 'dos and don'ts'. Another wonderful surprise-besides the practical advice, colorful layout, and fun photos- are the philosophical gems Christine shares. A must read for any woman, whether she is 'grown-up' or not!

2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and missleading
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.4-0 out of 5 stars Great text!
This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars So you want to learn about skin care, eh?
I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource
The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC REFERENCE
I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not to bad
The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book that's full of practical ideas!
I've never been a big makeup wearer, but as I've hit my 30's, I've become more interested in wearing makeup to enhance my look. I bought Kashuk's book last year, and it's been great!
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough ethnic information...
This book is mainly made for a limited spectrum of people. Not to mention there are minimal tips for people of different colors, even the pictures don't have a lot of ethnic diversity. A lot of tips don't take into consideration of ethnic features, and some of them are even non-applicable. There's this one section teach you how to pick eyeshadow color according to hair color. I can't simply see how it works on any asian complexion. It doesn't even mention black hair. For eye shape, it doesn't even mention asian eyes. I am not looking for a book that is going to devote a whole section for ethnic makeup, but at least like Kevyn Aucoin book, talk about it in one or two lines, use at least 1 or 2 asian models.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Guide For All Ages and Skill Levels
In the 70's I did a lot of make-up on customers in the salon I worked in. One thing I always told them that the trick was to make people notice the difference in them but not admire their make-up. Imagine my delight to find Sonia has this same philosphy. On the DVD she talks about women being taught, another "thing" of mine. Women are sold all sorts of things but never taught the best way to use them. This book and DVD do just that, they teach. There is something for all skill levels and ages. Young girls just starting out to those of use who are more mature in our beauty can find some new trick. Even though you know Sonia has her own line of products she never pushes them, a real plus to my way of thinking. I have already tried three new ways to apply my make-up and I am pleased with the results. Sonia "rocks"on all levels and you will not be disappointed in this book/DVD combo. Not get out the colors and play! ... Read more

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

Kevyn Aucoin is definitely everything his reputation says he is.This book is excellent, informative, and extremely well put together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making Faces, wow
Making Faces is an excellent book. However, it might not be what you expect. This book is wonderful provided you are looking for something a little more outlandish, extravagant, or theatrical. It focuses on color, mood, and the art of makeup.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing talent
I bought this book for my wife who works in a salon. But I find myself entertained by it too!Kevin is a fantastic makeup artist (which is obvious when you first open the book).I think anyone in the fashion/beauty industry should see this book. The book has makeup tips and tricks and plenty of beautiful pictures of celebs and normal people made to look like models, goddesses, and celebs from the past.A gorgeous book to own! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and suit for worldwide reader
Why I choose the word "Worldwide Reader"? I got this book in UK edition which I doubt that if it has any differences from the US edition. Anyway, I have to say that this book is one of a kind that it is well writen, easy to understand and really simplify all the science thing which some make it so hard and too redundant to understant. What impress me most is the selection and cases provide. Being an Asian reader, most of the time, I find books with only US or EU product recommended, which sometimes I find they are not as effective or as good as products from the Asian original (not to mention that it's very hard to find), but that doesn't happen with this book. The author impress me with Asian cases and even recommend some Asian brand product, which is easier to find and that I've been using and yet found it really effective and good to my skin (so I know that the product she recommended is really work).

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help your skin care regimine
Baumann has put together a book that will help you find how to take care of your skin the best that you can.I like that she spends time giving you 4 different tests so you can see what type of skin you have. These tests are better than the dry, oily, and normal skin types that we all typically classify our skin.Using these more sophisticated tests you can better assess your skin.
2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas, but advice was lacking
I bought this book in desperation to try and improve my acne-prone skin. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and I was excited to see what the book would tell me. I bought it, read it, and followed the product advice for my skin-type, using the products exactly as she suggested. Within a week, my skin was 80% worse. I had pimples all over my forehead and chin, and my skin was dry and peeling. I continued to use the products and to get the same results for about a month before I gave it up. It turns out that one of the products she listed as her favorite for my skin type was full of acne and irritation causing chemicals. This book is mostly well-written and interesting, with some good healthy habbit advice, but be careful with the products suggested. I got the impression that she didn't really try them, or do any real research on them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Japanese Tattoo Art
This book is a great reference for tattoo artists and other artists that enjoy the art of Japanese tattooing.

3-0 out of 5 stars fabulous photos, unique access, lost opportunities
It appears to be the sad fate of English-language books on the Japanese tattoo that they so rarely combine all the desired publishing strengths--first-rate photography, unique insights, disciplined writing, and careful documentation--in a single volume. And this is disappointingly the case with Takahiro Kitamura's "Bushido: Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo."The book includes, as previous reviewers have noted, stunningly beautiful photographs, and it benefits mightily from the personal access of Kitamura (who tattoos as the artist Horitaka) to modern practitioners of the Japanese tattoo. However, it is also the case that only a minute percentage of the book's illustrations are captioned and explained, the text keeps shifting perspective and voice, and the glossaries and index are inadequate.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Best tattoo book I've ever seen.Large, colorful pictures, detailed descriptions, and beautiful artwork.I had to drive all the way to Japantown in San Francisco to find the book because it's out of print or something, but it was worth the wait.Pick this up, you won't be disappointed... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Photography book is a better description...
I must admit I was very excited about this book when I bought it. However, I became dissapointed after 5 minutes of openning it. The pictures are beautiful however, there is not a lot of information about techniques and makeup in general. The makeover examples are not innovative at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST Definitive Book on Makeup Artistry
As a makeup artist I can simply state that Robert Jones has written the finest, most comprehensive book on makeover/makeup application I have ever read. All others pale in comparison and are somewhat self-serving in nature compared to Robert's book.If you are new to makeup, want to study application techniques or just a FAN of makeup artistry in general... BUY THIS BOOK.You will thank yourself and find that you refer to it more than any other book on the subject.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good picture book...information is not as appealing
This book seems to have spent a lot of time on the photographs of the models/women and other images---this is great if you're looking for a good picture book. However, the book is misleading in that the reader is made to think that the simple instructions are written to help achieve the beautifully photographed looks in the book. This is not the case. The models are wearing looks that are more sophisticated than what one would achieve if the book's instructions were followed.
