What is the meantime? According to author and inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, being in the "meantime" means being in a state of limbo. "Whenyou are not happy where you are and you are not quite sure if you want toleave or how to leave, you are in the meantime," she explains. Rather thanwallow in confusion, Vanzant encourages you to use the meantime as anopportunity to prepare yourself for true love. The first order of business isto clean house, starting with the basement--the place in the psyche where youstore your most destructive thoughts. Room by room, Vanzant takes youthrough a metaphorical cleaning of the soul. This way, when your meantimedays are over and love finally comes knocking on the front door, you'll have aclean house to welcome love into. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Iyanla is very personable. She really makes you stop and think that we are not crazy or wrong, we all just need to believe and trust in ourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and an even poorer message
My wife and I have been married 11 years, things have been better between us. We both went out and bought books to help with the relationship (or so I thought). After reading the book my wife explained that we should "wait and see". I, at the same time, read the 7 Principles of Marriage. My take was, our relationship is bent not broken, let's try to fix it together. After reading half of "in the meantime" I see where she got her opinion of "action". You have two choices from the book: 1. Do nothing until "inspiration" hits 2. Throw away everything and start over.Either way the book gives no other options or practical examples to move ahead together in a positive way. Don't waste your time and hope to God that your significant other doesn't get a hold of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Iyanla Vanzant helps you get to the core of life
Iyanla Vanzant speaks mostly about the importance of "living in the now", something we all know but are too busy to practice. She does a nice job too of comparing the Western style of "Doing" as opposed to the Eastern style of "Being." Linking the two cultural aspects could not have been an easy task, and I applaud Ms. Vanznant for having the courage to reach into a women's soul, and to draw out the ugliness that lives there.

The "meantime," according to best-selling author and inspirationalspeaker Iyanla Vanzant, is that in-between stage of life when you're gatheringup strength, evaluating past mishaps, and preparing for the next chapter. Usingthe metaphor of psyche as house, Vanzant believes that the meantime offers aperfect opportunity for tackling a rigorous cleaning. "We are going to gothrough every inch of your emotional and spiritual house and clean up the mess, clear out the debris, fix the leaks, stop the squeaks, and reveal and repair anydamage we can find," she promises in this workbook. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Mean time is still the present moment ... and should be made the most of
I just love this woman's deep passion and if you ever hear her speak ... you just get it in the gut how close to the bone her wisdom is! The tone is simple but the actions they inspire are not. It is not easy to be breaking lifelong habits and cleaning the residue of all the years they operated unconsciously in you. But ... it can be done ... and worth it. No one ever won an Olympic God Medal without the agony of hard endurance training over many years. Hence, why the meantime is just as precious as the moment on the podium.
5-0 out of 5 stars Iylanla Digs Deep
I have been a Starting Over Fan since I stumbled across it during the second season. Iyanla Vanzant is one of the "life coaches" who helps women deal with their pain and problems. In her book, Living Through the Meantime, Iyanla gives readers the necessary tools to dig deep and uncover all the muck and wounds so that they can be their authentic selves and not just a shell of a woman.

2-0 out of 5 stars I just couldn't hack it
I bought the audio book and started listening on an 18 hour plane trip to India.I only made it through 4 chapters.Maybe the book is easier to take, but the narrative style of the author on the audio book made me feel like I was in grade-school again. On top of that, the premise of the book was too simplistic.Fix yourself, get happy, clean your emotional house...I'm not saying the material won't enlighten anyone, but if you're awake at all, you probaly have heard what she has to say already -- and probably from someone less annoying. ... Ordained minister and "spiritual life counselor" Iyanla Vanzant doesn't know the exact moment when her soul opened up "and the spirit of the divine entered [her] body." But she will always remember the key insight that opened the door to her soul and simultaneously locked the door to her insanity: "If you know who walks beside you, you can never be afraid." This is the premise from which Vanzant has launched her enormously successful 40-day, spiritual self-help program. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
I read and did these exercises several years ago when I was going through a very difficult time. The book helped me to feel centered and know that everything was "okay" and exactly as it was supposed to be at that time. The wisdom from the book is carried with me years later.Recommended for anyone going through transitions or difficulties. The book will comfort you while enlightening you.I looked forward to the comfort I found in it each day.Don't pass this up if you are having a hard time, and if you are not having a hard time, the book will just be wise and wonderful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleasantly surprised
I read the most current reviews and purchased this book with some skeptiscm (granted the author's link to Oprah weighted favorably for purchase). Then, I put the book aside for FOUR years.Following major surgery a few months ago and forced to reflect on my unfulfilled life while flat on my back for 6 weeks, I committed to 'do' the 40 days and nights. My original thought was, "Okey, okey, what can it hurt even though I'm a little fed up with books purporting healing and the way to self-knowledge."After about the first 20 'days', I felt a quiet change in me.I was still faced with the same problems and challenges but my outlook had changed. My problems were challenges and opportunities for inner growth rather than issues which fed my victimization mentality.I am still impressed after 35 'days' to feel compelled to put my 2 cents in having observed this positive phenomenon personally.I am certain the positive meditations brought my mind into a better alignment with my spiritual imperatives. And, some of the chapters truly and, at times, uncannily spoke to my inner world. This book obviously is not for everyone but it has lifted a dark cloud from ME and I am so grateful...

I love books that help you conretely set intentions and keep you focused on moving forward and growing. This is one such book. Each day you are given a focus and space within the book to begin using your life to apply this thought provoking journey.I'm not into Magical thinking and assuming that the power of one book is going to alter years of patterns.I believe that it takes our dedicated efforts. This book simply makes those efforts a little less chaotic and helps direct you through a self-journey.I've had it for years.I find that once a year or so, I'll go through some of it again and discover places that I've grown.Excellent book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Iyanla
I had read several other books by Iyanla before I started with this one and I have to say that I have never read another book that give's one so much information and yet is so accessible. Iyanla has a way of making seemingly esoteric issues very relatable and very understandable, and very easy to apply to your everyday life. "Acts of Faith" is definitley in that vein. I would also recommend 'Until Today' by Iyanla which I believe is a more developed version of 'Acts of Faith' in that the daily passages are longer and she give daily affirmations and activities to complete on each day.

5-0 out of 5 stars GET THIS and GIVE THIS to your favorite women:)
This is my FAVORITE book by Iyanla Vanzant because of:It's size(small enough for your tiny purse), its lack of preach-i-ness and how the index is organized by subject. I feel its a synopsis of all the subjects covered in her other books.I also feel the book is applicable to women of ALL cultures. You can use it as a daily guide or you can use the index to find a subject for which you could use guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for daily reflection
I can not express how insightful and helpful this book is! It really makes you look deep into the reason(s) why you thought you needed a book of affirmations in the first place. This book is perfect for those "why me" and "I really can't take any more" moments when you feel like life, and everything in it, needs to give you a break. If you're a woman experiencing a lot of change in your life and it seems like you just can't handle another crisis (or is it a crisis afterall?), this is the book for you. I carry it in my purse!

Each time my spirt is down, or I'm going through a situation, I turn to this book.I hold the book in my right hand by its spine, fan the pages with my left hand to stop at randum. The passages I've read, I have felt its deep spirtual feeling and I understand its meaning. Then I reflect on my situation and the passage fits.It helps me to understanding whats going on.It uplifts my spirit to deal with my situation. It give me insight to view my problem from a different angle. It also assures me that what I am currently going through will end.I will get through it.In my view, its a powerfull book.I have read several other books by Iyanla, even watched her talk show (sorry that went off the air), but like the bible, I keep Faith In The Valley near by. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "I sat down and had myself a good cry."
This book, that poem changed my ENTIRE life and still is. For so long people have been thought to believe that crying is a sign of weakness, and for me that was Magnified to the point where anger built up inside of me so much that it poured out in all the wrong times and at all the wrong people... until I read that poem, "Yesterday, I Cried." That poem is so powerful, not just in my situation but it's powerful in relation to life... Crying is HEALTHY!And moreso, it's OK!!!!I won't go into loads of detail, but read the book.... YOu will NOT be disappointed and you won't walk away from it with less, but more. Iyanla Gives such spirtual food to our souls and I really feel that this woman has an abundance of knowledge and just encouragement to give... it's truly a Wonderful thing what she's doing... I know some say hey it's a career hey she's making money... But the bottom line is, that's the cycle of life... but I think money that's spent on improving ones inner self and making it easier to deal with life.. I mean, this is a chaotic world we live in... there's hurt, pain, disappointment, all types of things we encounter and I think dollars spent on building up our Inside to cope with the Outside is money well spent. She has an incredible message to deliver to those willing to listen... Life is more internal than external and it's important that we build our "insides" up so that we can withstand the storms of the outside world... and yes, it is THAT serious. Depression is on the rise and I personally think it's because we don't have enough Value coming from the inside our ourselves... but this is something that we can work on, and this book is just one of the many tools that Iyanla (and others I'm sure) gives us to do so.I am personally a huge fan of Iyanla because I believe in the sincerity and fullness of her message... she's a wonderful relay of imperative messages.

4-0 out of 5 stars CD is Abridged...
I got the CD so that I could listen and read along. I am reading this book for academic reasons and normally do not read these types of books. The CD was to help me if the book got slow to me. The problem is that the CD cuts out sentences, paragraphs, pages (I counted once a 7 page leap), and chapters (Chapter 5 - "What is the Lesson When You Are Poor, Ugly, and Feeling Bad" was completely skipped.) I recommend that if you want the whole story with all of the details, just read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very powerful, thoughtful book
Heard YESTERDAY, I CRIED by Iyanla Vanzant . . . it is a powerful memoir by the best-selling author (known to regular OPRAH viewers) who has had an amazing and difficult life . . . yet I never got the feeling she was ever painting herself as a victim; rather, it seemed she was writing to help work out her problems . . . and, in doing so, she was showing me how I could work out mine.

When I was about 14 or 15 years old, I was in a afterschool class, and the instructor gave us each a copy of "Acts of Faith." The title of the book was very powerful to me, and I tried to read it then, but I was not ready. See, thats the thing about most self help books like these, you must be READY to read them.I actually got "Tapping the Power Within..." last month from my counselor, thats when I realized I still had two of her other books. My aunt also bought me one of her books when I was of the age 14, because I was going through a tough time. The book was called "Don't Give it Away." Which I am now in my THIRD YEAR OF COLLEGE... YAYY ME, and I passed the book down to my sister.(Also, I wanted to leave this portion of my message for a poster on here named Tigress "JD": Do not feel stupid for buying a collection of her books. Actually, I had just did the same thing. I am about to buy more of her books). Its quite hard choosing which books to read. I am currently reading the "Acts fo Faith" day by day, and I have finished reading "Tapping The Power Within" Which is helping me a lot.The following books I already have purchased was already shipped to me is "Faith in the Valley," "Living Through the Meantime," (which I started to read, but I was not sure if I was ready, after reading a couple of pages through)"One Day My Soul Just Opened Up (which I am debating with "Living Through the Meantime"), and "Yesterday I Cried." So I have about seven of her books. I am going to purchase more right now. I hope you all remain strong, and I hope the books will help you all a lot. (sorry for all the typos its 3:12am in the morning in NYC and I could not help it, but to get back online and purchase some more books, plus I cannot fall asleep).

5-0 out of 5 stars Iyanla touches my soul
I am a big fan of motivational and self-help books. I have read many in my lifetime. Mostly good, some so-so. It is important to read a book relevant to what one is going through at that time to get the full scope of things from the book we read I believe. Iyanla's books are one of them and one of my favourite authors. The first book I got from Iyanla's collection was "Yesterday I Cried" and that had helped me through the ditch I was going through at that time. A friend of mine recommended a book of hers "One day My Soul Just Opened Up" which at that time I had already knew about her and went on to search on amazon her other publications and purchased the whole series of her books. Yeh - crazy me! But hey, she's good! I like her approach in the way she writes and conveys her message. It's real. I can relate to her. I have almost the whole collection of her books that she has published and reading them one by one as I go through my life's ups and downs. For the past few months I've been going through many valleys, I started reading "The Value In The Valley" which has given me many insights into my own valleys that I am going through and have gone through and approach life and my valleys in a different light. I have just purchased the Audio CD version of it to listen while I drive or at home. Can't wait to get it and the rest of the motivational goodies I just got from other authors. :) Thumbs up to this book as well as Iyanla's other books. Thank you Iyanla for all the insights your book has given me. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars The Spirit of every Man
Author IYANLA VANZANT offers a spectular guide line, for every man who want to know his spiritual side of themself. The book offers a great guide for Afro-Americans, especially young African American male. My two elderbrother read this book and they recommended i read it. This is the firstbook of VANZANT that i have read, and i would recommmend young AfricanAmericans to really read this book."America's greatest crimeagainst the Black man was not slavery or the lynching, but that hewas taught to wear a mask of slef-hate and self-doubt"-MalcolmX5-0 out of 5 stars Iyanla, I love you!
I am a 21 year old black man, who for so long knew that there was more to life but could not figure out what it was. Months of searching lead me to realize that I had to become more spiritual. I went on to read numerous books on spirituality and self-improvement, but after learning these principles I had no way of applying them. This book showed me how to apply what i had learntand also taught me a lot more things about life and my relationship with the Creator. This book is a must for every black man or woman who is at the entrance of the tunnel, sees the light at the end, but does not know how to walk through. Iyanla took my hand and I'm sure she'll take yours. After she has lead you to the light, you learn the ultimate lesson: you have been and will always be able to lead others through this tunnel. ... I love inspirational card sets and this is one of the most beautiful and interesting sets I've yet to encounter. Iyanla Vanzant is a best-selling author who has created these cards to encourage you to address critical life issues in a creative manner. 5-0 out of 5 stars Healing and empowering cards!!!
One of the best healing decks I own, it only compares to Louise Hay cards. This are not affirmation cards, each card ask you a question in one side, on the other side an empowering action is suggested. The actions are to be taken "NOW" in the present moment or day. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ilyanla Live!: Self Value, Self worth & Self Love
I enjoy watching Iyanla on TV, and I have read a couple of her books, this was the first time I purchased one of her tapes and was very disappointed. The sound quality is poor.I found myself turning the volume up and then down, and then at times I couldn't hear anything at all.It started out with singing, which I guess is alright if that is what you had expected, but I didn't see the connection in the overly long singing introduction to the tape subject. She had a few good points that she brought out, and made one think. There were maybe 20 min. of interesting subject matter to listen to: I would not recommend this particular tape.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am a huge Iyanla fan, but even she has a bad day. This tape was a disappointment, expecially after being fired up with the "Faith" tape. The quality of the sound was not good, her singers were not on their game and the message seemed to come in the last 5 minutes of the tape. You found Iyanla rambling on and on mostly.I will still try the other cassettes but this one, you can pass on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remember to Love Your Feet
Iyanla takes us on a journey of the past and present on this cd.You willfind yourself in Rhonda ( the story she is telling throughout the lesson). You will step outside of your inner being and take a hard look within.Youwill come to know something that you have learned for years but never paidthat much attention to - "that you are made in the image of God." I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but you will learn to love yourfeet, your face, your private parts etc...Purchase this, and I promiseyou will finish it enlightened. Now hug yourself and tell yourselfRead more

Very helpful, Iyanla is a calm and soothing guide. The meditations, though simple, are very very effective. I am now greatly interested in hearing more from, and expect to be just as pleased with, future purchases of this author.

2-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed with this cd
I was disapointed with this cd. The title,to me,promised some tangible way to connect better with your center. I thought the meditations were "trite" and not too effective. I learned one good breathing exercise on the cd or I would have rated it a one star. ... Read more
