Not "Everything" you need to know
Dr. Sears seems to have spent the better part of his children's lives writing books about which he has no experience.His relegation of the father's role to secondary exemplifies his own inadeqacies.Back to the book.I'm sure it's useful to those mothers and fathers who never had the oral tradition training for parenthood and need a little help, but I would much rather recommend other types of reading for parents and parents-to-be.Spend some time on Native American spirituality. A little more time on books dealing with your nutrition prior to conception(BOTH PARENTS.)Try some humor, like Nora Efron to keep your spirits balanced.Learn about your body, mind, and spirit and that of your child by reading and listening to Rayna Gangi. Dr. Sears.You may help those who have no clue, but you need some further reading yourself.

useful and complete
A very userful book especially for new parents. It doesn't take anything for granted telling you everything you should know about your child. I could find answers to very common and "normal" concerns about my baby, that no one told me before (as for exaple that babies are not silent while sleeping, being in perfect health!)and important suggestments to detect more serious illnesses (such as GERD!)

Just Try It Out, and you'll see it works for you
I received this book several years BEFORE I became a mother--and decided it seemed a little too much for me.There was NO WAY I would ever sleep with my baby, breastfeed for more than 8 months, or carry the baby EVERY WHERE I went.However, I did appreciate that they valued the relationship between parent and baby, and that they were respectful of the child's needs and abilities, as well as the parent's needs and abilities.They also had some helpful ideas about food allergies, which runs in my family.

Take Care of the Child
Almost all sleep books talk about bedtime routines, sleep associations, and getting kids to fall asleep on their own, but Elizabeth Pantley does a good job of explaining why this is important.Imagine that your baby 'falls asleep rocking, nursing, sucking a pacifier' and then enters a light sleep phase and notices that everything is different from when she fell asleep.Is she likely to keep sleeping or wake up?Of course she is likely to wake up.The no-cry sleep solution will also help you to 'Change Your Baby's Sleep Associations' and 'Help Your Baby to Fall Back to Sleep on His Own' after he wakes up, whether you are breastfeeding, co-sleeping, or going back to sleep in his own crib.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to sleep problems, and if someone tells you there is - run the other way. Unfortunatley, what DOES exist is a whole lot of guilt.
Yes, it IS work - but worth it!
I love reading the critics of this book.They are looking for a gentle method of getting their child to sleep, but expect it to happen in a week or less.Parenting doesn't end at eight o'clock.And, like teaching your child to read, eat, go to the potty etc, it takes time and patience and practice and lots of reinforment.And this is coming from an exhausted mom, folks.And I know, from an sleep-deprived place in your brain, you tell yourself the crying is okay, it's not going to damage them - and it may be true.But going to your child when they're crying and holding them or nursing them tells them they can trust you, and THAT lasts.I used this book with my now 3 1/2 year old - she never slept...and this worked after a couple of months.I did let her fuss beside me in the bed as I held her, but she didn't so it alone.I so don't get that!Let a 4/5/6/7 month old baby lay there in a dark room, alone and bawl their head off until you've broke them like a horse and fall asleep.Insane.Elizabeth's book is just honest reading, makes you feel supported and not alone.If you want to help your child to sleep w/o CIO, seriously, not just as a pretty thought, but a commitment - this is the book for you. ... Really just okay...and a little disappointing
I believe in many attachment parenting principles, so I ordered this book once my child reached the appropriate age for discipline.I have to say I was more than just a little disappointed with this book.
I love Dr Sears but only liked this book
I am a huge believer in attachment parenting, but found this book to be a dollar short and way to late. I bought it when my son was 18 months old and reading it felt like I had already made tons of mistakes that wern't reversable as a parent. This book may be more helpful for "parents-to-be" or brand new parents. I also felt like some of the expectations were a little high... all in all I thought that the ideas and the general guidlines were good, just not many examples to help.

a working mom
Dr Sears completely ignores the HUGE population of working mothers!The book goes on and on and on about attachment parenting and how you should allow your child to disattach from you and not the other way around....well, the majority of the mother's in this world do not have this choice!Furthermore, he made me feel as though I was a selfish mother for not carrying my daughter on my hip for the first year of her life.My daughter is very attached to me and we have a very close relationship....yet I started back at work full time when she was 8 weeks old.I feel that Dr Sears only addressing those mothers that stay at home full time and even then he cautions about leaving your child!Easy for him to say!!!! ... My Favorite!
The Pregnancy Book is by far my favorite pregnancy book.This is the only one I sat down and read chapter by chapter.(I hated What to Expect When You Are Expecting.) This book gives a nice general month-by-month overview of what is going on with you and the baby.Each chapter covers how you may be feeling emotionally and physically, concerns you might have, how the baby is growing, topic of the month (nutrition, childbirth, tests etc.) and a diary section.
This IS the Book
This was my pregnancy bible. It had all of the information I needed and it wasn't scary. There are so many horror stories out there to frighten first time moms and so many books with dire advice that is little better than listening to old wives tales. The information in this book is presented in a thoughtful and non-judgemental manner and it really touches on all of the concerns pregnant women face, including working while pregnant and how to ask for pregnancy leave. My only criticism is that I wanted more pictures. I wanted to see more of how my baby was developping each week. That information is in there... just not enough of it to satisfy my insatiable curiosity about the new person I was carrying.

Useful all the way through
From the day I missed my period up until now with only a month to go until the birth, hardly a day has passed that I haven't consulted this book for something. It is information-packed, yet readable; reassuring, yet realistic; and gives a balanced perspective on potentially controversial things like homebirth and prenatal testing. Like most of the Sears books, it does have the unfortunate tendency to assume that its audience is made up of women in traditional, male-as-breadwinner marriages, and it does get overly corny at times. But those minor problems are easy to overlook in light of how terrific the rest of the book is. ... Read more

Get this one
The Birth Book provides well balanced information that women *and* their support people need to be educated consumers of birthing medical care. (Keep in mind that any childbirth could potentially land a woman in the hospital.)
Wonderful Book, Wonderful Author
You really need to read this book.It is a trusted guide written by an author with a normal approach to birth!
More anti-hospital biased than seems, but good read
I bought this book with the impression that it fairly showed both sides of the natural vs. medicated birth debate. But it clearly leans toward natural births. But it is still a good read if you are trying to decide whether you are going natural or medicated. It makes the medical community seem more "evil" than reality. At least in my expereice, the hospital i gave birth at is very accomidating to the mother's wishes and encourages many natural practices first. SO this book can freak you out, and make you more fearful than need be. But yeah, this book helped me out, and was worth reading. ... Read more

One of the better parenting books......
I thought this was one of the better parenting books I have read and believe me I read a lot of them.I have 3, very active boys, and I am always looking for some good easy to follow advice.I think the author(s) did a great job organizing the book and in the process making it very easy to read, which for a busy mom, I really appreciated.I really like the idea of summary pages at the end of each chapter so that I can refer easily to the most appropriate "skill" to be used in a pinch. When I read this book I felt I was receiving advice from a friend instead of a lecture from a book.I will read this book, I am sure, about 10 more times and I will probably like it even more.

Great parenting book
I am an avid reader of Dr. Sears books. I try to follow the parenting style he writes about as best as I can. I have almost all his books. The Discipline book he wrote was no help for me. I also tried "1,2,3 Magic" (I think that's the title), but I wasn't that fond of it. Then I read something that suggested this book, so I read it and LOVE it. It is easy to read and has wonderful suggestions on how to handle problems with your children and offers wonderful suggestions on how to handle yourself toward your children. I would suggest this book to everyone, especially to people who like Dr. Sears' books. ... Read more

Great parenting book
This & all the books in the Dr.Sears parenting library are wonderful! Very helpful with caring, smart ways to make parenting easier. You can really tell that the authors enjoy thier work & being parents themselves.

A must-read for every new mother
Thank you Dr. Sears!Attachment parenting has been around since the beginning of time, but we have Dr Sears to thank for bringing it to the forefront of discussion with the many books he has published, which all rally around the belief in AP.This is a must-read for first-time moms, as well as a great book for moms with children.With how our society pushes mothers to create independence in our children from the second they are born, telling us if we don't they will be clingy, whiny brats with the inability to allow us mothers to go on with our own independent lives, Dr. Sears brings us back to the importance of holding, loving and nursing our children, impressing upon us how these are CHILDREN who NEED their parents.I've read this book and now purchased it as a babyshower gift.
Decide for yourself about attachment parenting
Before I read this book, "attachment parenting" was just a phrase I'd heard thrown around--with good and bad connotations. This book explains the principles of attachment parenting, the benefits of it, and the challenges. When I reach a time in my life where I'm ready to have a baby, I am definitely going to try out some of these techniques. I already knew I was going to try breastfeeding for at least a year, but now I'll add to that trying out the baby sling and bed sharing.

Excellent Book!
I really am enjoying this book by Martha Sears, just as I have the other Sears books.What a wonderful way to help encourage our children to become the most successful people they can be!

Insightful, but don't believe everything you read
I love and agree with a LOT of what the authors have to say in "The Successful Child". However, the authors really push the idea that a baby must be breastfed and carried in a sling 24/7 in order to be "connected" to his or her parents. I don't buy that. I don't practice what the authors call Attachment Parenting, and my son and I are extremely connected.
naturally disciplining
I am from India and I ama product of attatchment parenting(almost all Indians are)...I now have a 2 month old baby girl...I agree with every aspect of Dr Sears philosophy about parenting.....As a kid,teenager and then a youth,I have always felt considering my parents' opinion before taking important decisions.It is true that I have not done many things I wanted to bcoz of fear of hurting my parents' feelings..looking back,I don't feel my freedom or independence was questioned in those times.In fact,they turned out to be good for me.But still,I disagree with my mom's opinions on almost anything and I have my own ways too.I believe attatchment parenting is what is natural and that is how to raise caring,sensitive children who havemoral values and will strive towards the bettering of the world they live in. ... Excellent reading on good nutrition.
I really enjoyed reading through this book. It gives extensive nutritional information for the whole family. Since reading this book, I have made several changes to my family's diet.

it keeps you interested so it's easy to read, a lot of practical tips along (how to low colesterol, how to increase iron, how to read lables and more), devided to chapters in a way that you can jump from one to another and not read in the original order, and like other books of his, positive.

My daughter likes it...
Is very graphic, so not for the faint hearted parent :-)
Best book on potty training.
This book and "My Big Boy Potty" are the best books I could find on potty training.Realistic situations addressed.
Not the Best Book Out There
Many of this book's positive qualities have been discussed already, but I will mention my favorites again: I like the simple pictures (which we all know will hold a toddler's attention better than more detailed drawings), the fact that the child in the book could be either a boy or a girl, the sidebars with answers to questions that undoubtedly will pop up ("Where does poo-poo come out?" "Why won't my poo-poo come out?"), the "tips for parents" on potty-training, and the fact that the child in the book is not punished for having an accident and not making it to the potty in time.And I love the fact that the potty in this book looks like a modern training potty, rather than a lemonade pitcher!This is a very loving book with two very loving parents and happy-looking older siblings.

Teaches Lifelong Health and Openmindedness about Trying New Foods
This book educates your child about the health level and quantity-intake of different foods, using the traffic light gradations of red, yellow, and green.Even today, after reading this book to my 4 1/2 old daughter since she was 2 1/2, she will pipe up and say, "Hey, this is a green light food, Mom!"We also use some of the recipes listed towards the end of the book, especially our own version of a balanced fruit smoothie.
As straightforward as it says: Eat Healthy Feel Great
-Puts the revised 2005 Food Pyramid designers to shame withits straightforward, clear approach (versus the revised pyramid 'stripes' that are supposed to indicate how much of each fod group to eat but who can figure it out at a glance?)
Building Good Nutritional Habits
What a wonderful resource for parents who are trying to "do the right thing" -- to teach their children healthy eating habits in the midst of a society that promotes the fast, processed, and packaged. Dr. Sears categorizes food into green light/yellow light/red light groups, and it's a concept my children (ages 2, 4) readily understand. The text is simple and clear, and the message is presented in a fun way. This book would be a big help to any parents interested in changing their families' eating habits for the better. There are parts in the book that are just for parents: they explain nutrition, as well as make suggestions on how to incorporate more "green light" foods in the family's meals. Great Book
This is a great book.I ordered this when I needed tips on how to help my son sleep.

Only good for stay at home moms
This book has a strong bias toward co-sleeping and nursing for several years.It does not have any tips for increasing sleep for a working mom, and it offers no help to anyone that does not want to share a bed with their 3 year old.

For attachment parents only
I bought this book in a sleep-deprived haze when my baby was waking every two hours during the night.Instead of offering advice, strategies, or even sympathy, I was told that this sleep-deprivation is "nightime parenting" and that I should enjoy my baby while he is small and needy.The attachment parenting spin on this book is so strong that it is virtually useless to anyone who does not follow this philosophy. I sent this book off to Goodwill.I much prefer the book by Mark Weisbluth, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.Weisbluth explains baby sleep, at what ages certain naps develop, and most importantly, lays out various strategies for getting your child to sleep better. ... This book worked for us!
Before our son (now 7 1/2 years) was born, I read all the major baby books carefully.But none of the advice on putting the baby to sleep worked.His disposition was evident in the hospital: he was serious and irritable although he was not a colicky cryer.He would not sleep unless held, nursed or rocked, could not be put down, and got overstimulated by almost anything.We got rid of his expensive crib, stroller, playpen, and swing almost unused.At 3 weeks old my sister-in-law gave me this book and it just worked.My son slept with us and was carried in a sling almost constantly.He is now a highly independent first grader who excels academically, is a voracious reader, creative and his own person.He requires very clear and structured discipline and routine which we started early because the Sears book warned that high need babies are usually high need children (I recommend Setting Limits with Your Strong Willed Child, and Raising Your Spirited Child).I would have thought the high need child business was just psycho-babble until this wonderful boy landed in our home and after talking to parents who have a first, second, or third child like him.Unless you've been in the shoes of a parent with a kid like this, you have no idea.We now have baby twins and all the stuff in the regular baby books works and life is easier.After a lot of soul searching and rereading and talking to other parents, my husband and I decided to practice attachment parenting (modified somewhat--our babies sleep mostly in cribs since 6 months and love their stroller) now out of choice not necessity.There are some people who would never practice any advice in this book--the recent norms in our society are so deeply entrenched (which I believe causes the low breastfeeding rates)--but read it and make your own judgement and don't listen to people who say you'll ruin your kids, you won't.Find what works for you and trust your instincts and remember this stage passes quickly.You only get to love and hold babies for a short time before they're off and running.

Attachment Parenting Ruined My Life
As a first-time expectant mother, I thought the idea "Attachment Parenting" sounded nice; a gentle, devoted approach to mothering, and one I could provide as a stay-at-home parent.
It openes my eyes on my baby.
Yes, this was my first book by dr. Sears and it helped me a lot. I was reading it while my little one was asleep in my lap and I found out that she was a normal baby with needs and not a monster who needed to be taught who is in charge. As a new mom and without any friends or support I felt so inadequate in this new motherhood thing. I was scared to spoil my baby and overdo things but this book brought me an insight and gave me a lot of confidence in what I was naturally doing.

Supports the CO not the SLEEP!
I am so glad I read this book because it helps me feel OK about our family bed. HOWEVER I was hoping for some ways to get our baby to sleep better but solutions are sorely lacking. For those I found another Sear's recommendation: The No-Cry Sleep Solution, which supports cosleeping but also offers ways for everyone to get better sleep. If you want your family bed validated this is a great book.

**Dr. Sears's strongly suggests: "if you resent it, change it."He also addresses the fact that actual BED sharing does not always work and that there are many other ways to "share" sleep with your child/ren.I highly recommend this book (and the rest of the Dr. Sears Library) to any and all parents of babies and children of all ages.

Very helpful!
As a woman who breastfed eight children (including her adopted child!) Martha Sears is exactly the sort of person you want writing books about breastfeeding. Her tone is loving and gentle while still offering a wealth of information and troubleshooting tips. Like most women I know, I found breastfeeding to be much more complicated and difficult at first than I'd anticipated. The first couple weeks were rough for me and I give much credit to this book (as well as my lactation consultant) for getting me through.

Excellent Resource for Any New Mom!!!
I used this book as a reference when nursing my own children, now give the book as a gift to my friends and relatives who are expecting a baby.
Hurt More Than It Helped
I was given this book as a gift and was eager to exclusively breastfeed my baby.The first few days after we got home from the hospital, however, things were not working right.I fed and fed him, yet he never seemed satisfied.I scoured The Breastfeeding Book for information about low production levels, and basically all it said was that it is rare and not to worry about it--just breastfeed frequestly and your supply will increase.I did just that, yet my supply never increased.My baby was so hungry and I was frantic and felt completely inadequate!This book basically implied that giving your baby any formula is just short of child abuse and breastfeeding is the only option, no matter what.Thank goodness a lactation consultant finally worked with us, determined that, in fact, my supply was too low for my baby, and recommended I supplement with formula.My baby was so happy after that, my supply actually increased after I started supplementing, and we are still doing a combination 4 months later.There is no way we would have stuck with it this long if I had followed the advice of this book and just breastfed.I give this book one star because, although there is some useful information, it makes moms feel like failures if they can't or don't want to breastfeed for a year or more.Being a mom is so much more than how you feed your baby! ... Highly recommended
After reading many reviews, I finally ordered 3 books about premature babies. This book was definetly the BEST. I read through it daily and it answered many questions. Iespecially recommend it if your baby had no problems and was only in the incubator to grow up.

Invaluable resource for NICU parents
This book contained the answers to questions I had while my baby was in the NICU. As a second-time parent, I was especially concerned with attachment issues with my baby that might arise from being hospitalized. Good Book

As a Christian, I found this book to be very apalling and offensive.I don't know how they can call this book "CHRISTIAN parenting".The authors take Bible verses out of context to support their own views--views that encourage making the child the center of the family (at the expense of your marriage), only doing what makes your child "feel right" (whether that means not disciplining your child, not making them sleep in their crib, never letting a baby cry, etc.) The authors are entitled to their own opinion, but they should not call their views "Christian" when it's clear to me that many of their views go against what the Bible teaches.God calls us to do the right thing, whether it FEELS good or not.God calls us to lead our children, not let them control & manipulate us, like this book advocates.Following the principles in this book will lead to a chaotic, child-run, sleepless household. On the contrary, if you want order in your home, great sleep at night and a great marriage, follow the principles in "On Becoming Babywise", "Babywise II" and all the books in that series.They are awesome, God-honoring, practical books. All of my children have slept through the night by 8 weeks old and are healthy, happy, well-adjusted and secure, largely due to the healthy guidelines in the Babywise series.

Piece of mind
Great ready reference for mother's who don't like to pump their children with antibiotics and would prefer to try a natural remedy first

This is a very good reference for natural remedies, however, I was hoping it would have some information about immunizations and it did not.
