5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Health Book
Marilu gives 10 steps to improving your health which some people may feel are radical. However, after trying out at least half of the steps, I am feeling more energized and healthier. If you are tired, or overweight, or just feel blah, this book is for you. It challenges the way you think about different food groups (dairy, meat, sugar) and will help lead you to a new lifestyle.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice!!!
I was a little hesitant about buying a health book from an actress but I like Marilu and she seems like she know what she's talking about. The advice she gives makes sense. I was looking for a reason to give up dairy and this book was perfect. She gives 10 tips to make over your health. I'm doing one by one. First thing I did was I stopped drinking liquids with my food. I instantly noticed the difference. I was way more regular!! The next step was I gave up dairy. I lost about 12 pounds just by doing that. I used to have ice cream EVERY DAY!! And I just noticed yesterday that I no longer crave sweets. I'm still working on giving up caffeine, but like I said, one step at a time. I strongly recommend this book!! Giving up dairy is HARD! I'm a vegetarianso a lot of my foods included cheese, yogurt, and creams. Its a lot harder now, but I feel so much better! Its worth it! I just recently got a physical and am eagerly awaiting the results. This book is so cheap you wont lose anything except weight! I hope this helps you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall Most Helpful Book I Have EVER Read!!!
I first read Marilu's book in early 2001.Within 10 months of implementing some of Marilu's suggestions, I lowered my cholesterol from 219 to 121, went from 139 lbs to 112 lbs (I'm 5'2"), got rid of my daily sore throat I had for years, lessened the number of headaches I had, and boosted my energy and joy for life tremendously!!I also finally had the courage to leave a job that affected my life outside of work because it was so stressful.I never looked back!!People who hadn't seen me in a while wondered how my face (and my belly) got so thin because I had always carried around a little extra "baby fat" no matter how thin I was before.I attribute it to letting go of dairy.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB!
I have worked with a nutritionist several times in the past. This book summarizes everything the nutritionist told me AND MORE! 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome !!!
Some people just don't get it. This book is not just about dieting, but improving your life and living healthy. Like Marilu said "Everything is connected to Everything". I never believed in this theory, but after reading the book.. I have definitely changed my mind. 2-0 out of 5 stars Assertions Without Facts
I don't object to what the author says so much as what she leaves out.She makes many assertions, but usually fails to give support or references for them.I would find her much more convincing if, instead of saying "Milk is toxic sludge that only cows should eat! YUCK!" (paraphrasing here, sorry) she would list some of the studies that have proved this to be true.I could even like the "YUCK!" if she had any proof of the fact behind it. While I admire her attempt to change the standard American diet, I found this book to be, frankly, something of an insult to my intelligence.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, tasty dishes
I've done the 30-Health Makeover several times, mostly because I miss something along the way, or forget things over time.I first started this program in 1999, lost about 60 lbs. (without much exercise as I was working about 75-90 hrs. a week and my skin, hair and nails became healthier.I've always had people at work asking me what I'm eating because it looks and smells delicious.I sometimes substitute less expensive fish and the program works fine.By the end of the month, you're pretty used to the food combining and it's not hard to come up with simple meals of your own that follow the rules. Also, many maintstream grocery stores now have organic foods and lots of soy and/or rice substitutes, so shopping is easier than it was when I first started the program.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 30 day total health makeover by Marilu Henner
I checked out this book from the library and thought it was great.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the recipes call for some exotic ingredients. It's hard if you are on a budget.By the way I ordered this book from Amazon almost two months ago and still haven't recieved it.They never returned my money and they stopped responding to my emails. The book is good, but you might want to buy it somewhere else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Feel the difference!
I wasn't expecting much when I started this eating plan, but was pleasantly surprised. I DID feel much better. However, the food combining theory can be a little confusing, and the book needed to be a little clearer on substitutions. The recipes are tasty, but although none of the recipes call for adding salt, there is a prominent use of Tamari/soy sauce which is in itself high in sodium. If you are watching sodium, you might want to use another type of seasoning. Some of the recipes for example called for Sea Bass and/or Red Snapper and Ahi Tuna (the Sushi grade kind). At my supermarket, the sea bass was $20.00 lb.,I can only imagine what the Ahi tuna costs! I just substituted plain old tuna, and either cod or tilapia for the sea bass. Also, the menus needed to be planned better to utilize your leftovers. For example, I baked the "Mary Ann's Corn Muffins" recipe, which made 12 muffins. We were supposed to have them for breakfast for that one day, and nowhere on the plan did they appear again! So the next day, there was another different breakfast, with no usage for the leftover muffins, and no information on what to do in these cases. Some of the recipes that did allow you to use leftovers the next day, happened to be the recipes that made very small portions to begin with, so there WERE no leftovers! UGHHH! Also, you need to have a restaurant size icebox for all the veggies and ingredients. I found myself going shopping more frequently, running all over town to different stores to get some of the ingredients. Luckily, I live in an area that it's easy to find the different ingredients. If you are a working person, you will need to cook things the day before you need them to have it all ready on some occasions. I had to make my hubby's lunch the night before for some of the days, otherwise I'd be up all night cooking. It seemed I was in the kitchen way too frequently though. I was a little disappointed to find out that Marilu has a nanny employed! :) I wonder if that's who cuts up all the veggies in her home and prepares all of these meals. Because some are a little time consuming. Don't get me wrong, I like Marilu, and although there's a few downsides to the book, it is still worth doing. Sometimes celebrities forget about what it's like to be the "average" person. See Bass is ok for celebs, but there are other types of fish that are cheaper and also healthy. But the diet can become a little pricey if you get every single ingredient on the shopping lists - but in the end, you'll feel better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Recipes from Marilu
I have all of Marilu's books, and if you're looking for great recipes, this is the one for you.It has dishes that are more gourmet/restaurant quality.Grilled Tuna with Washabi Whip was on the menu this week, as was Tofu Olive Wraps (sun-dried tomatoes, olive spread, watercress, fresh rosemary, carmalized onions).Everytime I cook from this book, my hubby can't stop raving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS guide to celebrating special days!

5-0 out of 5 stars delicious, healthy recipes
I wanted to add a good review for this book because people have written negative things about it. The recipes are so good! I made several for different parties and everyone loved them. There's lots of other info, but if you're not interested, don't read it! Yes, it's true that the index is not thorough enough for a book that's organized differently like this one is, but that's the only drawback to this healthy cookbook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook and so much more!
Not only will you love the recipes in this book, you will use it again and again as a guidebook and manual to healthy cooking/living.It explains the components of a healthy diet according to her plan, and gives many food ideas for healthier eating and substituting.
4-0 out of 5 stars I think...I like it!
alright, hi! I read this book...I am a teen, and I've been avoiding dairy...I really believe it could be connected to nasal congestion and acne. I do feel clearer (no more phlegm). however, I am not decidedly cutting out sugar, meat, and dairy for the rest of my life (hey, I still have experimenting to do/find my own "thing")...Anyway, one thing I've taken away from this book is soy milk...I started to drink soy milk in replace of regular milk and I don't know if I'll ever think of downing milk from a glass the same way again....ewww. This book also has really good information on toxic preservatives...she lists them (grouped Most Dangerous, Not Sufficiantly Tested, and found to actually be Good for you i.e.- spices, etc.) I do agree that the Food Combining section is confusing..and a little impractical (are u really going to "add a legume dish" to the recipes Marilu gives that don't complete the food-combining system?) However, I'm making recipes from her book, and so far, so good...The KILLER BROWNIES are GREAT..I made meat-loaf (made of Gimme Lean soy- yes, btw that may be another thing, the ingredients are organic/may seem hard to find- but I'm finding it, nevertheless in grocery stores near me...Health Food stores are GREAT...)_> my sis, stepdad, and mom loved the meatloaf dish (I thought it was 3/5 stars- a little salty but good.)
5-0 out of 5 stars great family-friendly recipes!
I'm always looking for healthy, nutritious meals to feed my family. There are so many great recipes in this book - and everyone loves them! From meatloaf to mac & cheese, from muffins to cookies - everything we've tried has been excellent!Plus, so many of the recipes are good enough to serve company - and cheaper than eating at a restaurant.Even if you don't follow Marilu's health and diet plan, you'll love these recipes. They're amazingly good, and good for you, too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you have kids, buy this book.
You will be so happy you bought this book if you have kids.It really educates you on the "junk" we are feeding our kids, and gives healthy alternatives that kids will still love. Not only does she give some good background on the healthy principles she believes in, she backs it with science.
5-0 out of 5 stars easy recipes; very kid-friendly
Yes, the recipes are easy - you can prepare much of this food with kids 10 and over.Plus it's kid-friendly food, not as gourmet as Marilu's other cookbooks.I also really liked all the info on development stages of children - for people who don't have time to research childhood development, it was great to have the info in one place, and to relate children's health to what they eat, and what they do (movement & activities).5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I've been looking for...
Even though I am a vegetarian and eat very healthy, I have felt a little lost about how to pass on the importance of healthy food to my daughter. People are always asking me how will I handle certain situations when she is no longer a baby and I do not control everything that goes into her body. For example, how to handle McDonald's birthday parties or school snacks without making her feel like the odd one in the bunch. This book gives great advice on how to handle these situations in a positive manner as well as how to make healthy eating a lifestyle for the entire family. I also love the recipes and knowing that I can still bake homemade desserts for my family, just without all the processed sugar and dairy. I have already tried some of the recipes and they have been a hit so far. Thank you Marilu - every parent should read this book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't give in and be consistent
That's the whole point of this book.I have loved Marilu's previous works, but this isn't one of her best. Not much here to sink your teeth into.
1-0 out of 5 stars This book made me so mad!
So much in this book reminded of the way our great grandparents raised kids, with that 'children are to be seen, not heard' type of attitude. It left a really bad taste in my mouth for so many reasons.
1-0 out of 5 stars Did anyone fact-check this book????
Where do I begin? There were some very bizarre claims the authors made. For instance, it was claimed that a child who has not broken a pacifier (thumb-sucking) habit may be doomed to smoke cigarettes in his/her adult years. One parent who had a teen asking for advice on how to get the teen off cigarettes (unclear if the teen was on a pacifier as a child), but the problem was that the parent was on cigarettes for many of the teen's early years. Dr. Sharon's advice? To ask the pediatrician to tell the teen how harmful cigarettes are. As if the pediatrician will have more persuasion power then a parent! It will be a sad day when children have more respect for their pediatricians than their parents.
