    Editorial Review

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many People can be helped with a lower carbohydrate approach.
The Atkins Diet was the first one I tried after I got serious about losing weight and controlling my type 2 diabetes. After being in the induction period for a week, I lost ten pounds. However, I found that it was too difficult to adhere to for an extended period of time. I decided to try a moderate carbohydrate approach coupled with eating foods with a low glycemic impact, eating foods with a lower energy density, and regular exercise.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to lose weight, but its not for the long term
When this diet first came out I got on it and lost about 40 pounds.I kept at it and for quite a while stayed really thin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins is amazing!
This book is absolutely indispensable for your study of Organic Chemistry.I am a student of Dr. Atkins and am glad other people can learn from him through this manual. Not only does each answer have a detailed explaination of the answer, but also each chapter has a self-test of about 30 questions (answers in the back).Note that the text by Carey has the answers to the questions in each chapter (about 1/3 of the total questions in the book), but he does not include end-of-chapter questions' answers or anything but just the answer (as opposed to Atkin's details).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solutions Manuel
This book accompanies Francis Carey's Organic Chemistry Textbook. It includes solutions to all of text problems and the solutions are worked out well to allow the student to understand the thought process involved in solving them.Truely, a thorogh solutions manuel!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts I had while in college
An all-around good book for an intro to organic chemistry.Good example problems, plenty of end-of-chapter questions and concise explanations of critical concepts.Lays an excellent foundation of molecular theory as it pertains to Organic Chemistry in the first few chapters.End of chapter review (very thorough) gives tables of important reactions, their respective reagents/catalysts, and in some cases real-world applications (very helpful).Of course, I had excellent teachers for these courses, so I am a bit biased in favor of this book. But, organic chemistry is inherently not an extremely difficult subject to understand; mostly memorization.I found the graphics somewhat boring, though, and felt they could have aided in understanding concepts, as might be the case with students who stuggle with this subject; maybe the newer editions are better; I haven't seen them. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars To Good To Be True
The Adkins diet works because decreasing your carb intake decreases your calorie intake and it also works by your body loosing significant fluids secondary to increased urine excretions of ketones (from fat burning) and nitrogen (from use of protein for energy rather than the body's first choice of glucose from carbs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling Information about Whole Body Dentistry
This was a very informative and well written book about "alternative dentistry". Dr. Breiner explains the differences between traditional and whole body dentistry in easy to understand terms. He gave many examples of the types of health problems which can be related to amalgams, root canals, periodontal work, orthodontics and bridges and partials. He also described the kind of exam and treatment a whole body dentist would use. A great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome edition to the weight loss literature.
There are three phases to the Atkins diet. In the first phase, which lasts two weeks, carbohydrates are restricted to 20 grams a day. More carbohydrates are eaten in the second phase as long as weight loss continues. The third phase is lifetime maintenance. Even more carbohydrates are allowed in this stage but usually no more than 90 grams a day. "Atkins for Life" is meant to explore this dietary phase more deeply than the original revised book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution".

    Editorial Review

Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Co-author Dr. Vernon needs a new approach...
...to dieting and to writing. As a previous reviewer alluded to, this book would have been much better had Dr. Atkins been able to finish himself. However, what we are left with is a co-author MD who's personality is as cold as ice; not to mention condescending and disrespectful. This shines through in the tone of the writing. Furthermore, how can we take diet advice from someone who is obese herself? There are plenty of other well-written low-carb diet books.Try another.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener on Blood Sugar Disorders

2-0 out of 5 stars Moderation is key
This book, like the Atkins approach in general, has part of the picture, but is certainly incomplete.Moderation, not virtual elimination, of carbohydrates, when paired with lean protein, plenty of omega 3 (fish and flax oils), and monounsaturated oils (like olive oil), has been shown to be the healthiest diet (a Mediterranian type diet). The Atkins approach does not advocate moderation, instead prefering to vilify an entire necessary macronutrient - carbohydrates!Certainly the old fashioned 1980's style high carb low fat diets were a disaster, and brought out diabetes in susceptible people - but the answer is balance - good quality, naturally high fiber carbs, paired with protein and healthy fat - not virtual elimination of carbs.Inadequate carbohydrate intake can lead to fatigue and reluctance to exercise.Dr. Vernon herself continues to struggle with her weight, despite following the Atkins approach. Most Americans will initially lose weight when starting on Atkins because most eat FAR too many carbs. But they also eat too much saturated fat (animal and dairy fat, for the most part), which has been show to worsen insulin problems and diabetes, and aggravate cholesterol and artery inflammation, worsening risk of heart disease and stroke.Atkins addresses one of the these culprits (excess sugar), but not the other (excess saturated fat).Americans need to cut down on these, and then add more good fats (fish, nuts, olive oil, avacado), lean protein (to cut down on saturated fat), and not be afraid of healthy carbs in the form of whole fruits (not juice), vegetables, and whole grains (not white bread or sugary low fiber cereal). That, plus watching the calories, and daily exercise (at least 30 " of moderate cardio, five days a week), and diabetes will DRAMATICALLY improve.Try it and see! Health is not just about weight - its about healthy body fat and muscle ratios, and what is going on inside your body - in your arteries, your brain, etc.The studies all support healthy balance. ... After the publication of "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution," this older version seems to have been neglected.Mostly this is good because while it's a great book and I enjoyed reading it, Dr. Atkins' understanding of things has come a long way since he wrote it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Atkins and God Bless You!
What can I add to all the glorious reviews below and above this one? Here's a man that was frowned upon for many years because he dared to oppose his peers. Unfortunately his diet was only officially recognized after death and as a result several similar diets have sprung up since, taking advantage and credit of his lifetime's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Best Weight Loss System!
I lost at least 30 lbs and kept it off! This diet has been around awhile. I knew it worked as had tried it many years ago. I like the "new" addition of a salad a day. This is a high protein, very low carbohydrate diet. I have felt good on this diet. The day I ate macaroni and cheese, I felt bloated and fat, not slim as on the other days. I am loosing weight, even with "slips" and my regular sweet coffee. "Caffeine stimulates an overproduction of insulin, which ultimately promotes weight gain. The biggest need is to stop a caffeine addiction. Once you go 2 weeks without caffeine, you may have it again as long as you don't become dependent on it for energy." I do not need coffee for energy. I just like the taste! Since muscle weighs more than fat, and I'm walking vigorously (at least 20 minutes every day on days that are not too cold or rainy), less weight loss is normal.

    Editorial Review

From the wife of the late Dr. Robert Atkins, here is an inventive cookbook that will allow low carb devotees to keep the faith without cutting down the fat. Grounded in the carb counting, fat allowing formula that launched millions of dieters, Veronica Atkins has designed a book "to make doing Atkins a permanent part of your life." Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very limited application
Granted - even in the introduction (which I instruct any reader to read thoroughly), Veronica Atkins mentions that this cookbook is intended mostly for those at 'maintenance' level, where only 'healthy' eating (rather than weight loss) is the goal. Were someone not seeking to lose weight, or at any rate no substantial amount, the main dish recipes could be useful - they could find that they no longer needed snacks and the like because they had sufficient protein not to be ravenous. But most of the recipes are useless for low carb dieters who either actually want to lose weight or do not want to regain weight they have lost on the Atkins programme.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing offering from a usually trusted source
Don't get me wrong: I love Atkins and I'm a low carber myself. But I don't know what they were thinking when they put this cookbook together. Oh wait, I do know: they were thinking that total carb count is all that matters. Anyone who really understands low carb knows that it isn't just the total number of carbs you consume: where those carbs come from matters at least as much. So I was surprised to see recipes in this book calling for ingredients most low carbers wouldn't dream of touching on a regular basis. There also seemed to be an over-reliance on Atkins products, and overall, it looked too much like someone took a regular cookbook and just substituted artificial sweeteners for sugar and Atkins bake mix for flour and thought the recipes would fly. Not only did I make the decision not to buy this book, I didn't even like it enough to check it out of the library after reading through it. I hope the next Atkins book is closer to the mark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Recipe is a Winner!
I received this cookbook for Christmas 2004 and have already made a half dozen or so recipes - every single one was thoroughly enjoyed by my non-low carbing husband! I figure that Veronica Atkins has been eating low carb longer than just about anyone - she has a lot of great recipes to share! If you want to make low carb living your way of life, you will want to have this cookbook on your shelf. ... Read more

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed.Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.5-0 out of 5 stars 34 lbs. in 3 Months!!!!!

    Editorial Review

Dump the food pyramid that the American Dietetics Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society all implore you to follow for the sake of your health. Take antioxidant supplements (but skip most of the foods that naturally contain these nutrients). Eat a high-protein diet that has received the thumbs-down from major medical and nutrition experts and associations and has been deemed especially dangerous for women, as it depletes the body's calcium stores. If you believe that Dr. Atkins somehow knows better than all those experts and organizations, here's his latest--a plan to defy aging through eating a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, taking lots of supplements, optimizing your hormones, detoxifying your body through chelation therapy, exercising, and taking brain-boosters like ginkgo biloba. Free radicals, insulin resistance, sugar--these are the reasons we age, get sick, and get fat, insists Atkins, not dietary fat. Eggs are good for you. The cholesterol you eat does not affect the cholesterol in your blood, he says. He scoffs at "the unholy alliance among the American Heart Association, American Medical Association, American Diabetes Association, and U.S. government in its many manifestations (FDA, Department of Agriculture, NIH, et al.)." One wonders why Atkins thinks all these medical organizations would band together to promote an unhealthy diet and not herald Atkins as a genius if, indeed, he had the answer. ... Read more
