3-0 out of 5 stars An important word on the "American Council for Science and Health"
I have not read Arnot's book. However, to those reviewers who cite the attacks made against the book by the American Council for Science and Health, you need to know the shaky credentials and corporate sponsorship of that particular organization.Go to their website: there you will find articles saying that pesticide in foods poses absolutely no health risks, and articles saying that vending machines in schools should be allowed to continue selling soda and a whole range of snack foods in the interests of a free market system. This Council appears to be nothing more than a highly-financed mouthpiece for various corporate interests. I have been highly skeptical of any of their "scientific" claims for a while now. Finding out that they do not support Arno's book actually makes me more interested in checking it out myself, so I have ordered a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for those dealing with breast cancer
Having just been diagnosed with a recurrence of non-metastatic breast cancer, I decided to seek out resources that might help me make the lifestyle changes I failed to make after my first episode, in order to prevent yet another recurrence. Since I'm in a doctoral program, I decided to take a course on alternative medicine and immediately began reading the texts, which led to this excellent resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better now, than later...
First, every woman I care about, my friends, sisters, mom, etc., will be getting a copy of this book as their next gift from me! Dr. Arnot gives example after example of medical research PLUS lifestyles of women all over the world showing better health than most Americans, revealing what scientists believe attribute to it! Unless every word and Doctor,or school referenced are all liars, this book is a LIFESAVE.Scientist have come a long way. They don't just say "don't eat this, but eat that" and you'll be fine. That's too simple. They know much more than that now and we need to take advantage of that. If they say breakfast is important, always eat SOMETHING,than that's what we should do! Ifyou want a fiction book,or an easy fix, or if you want to ramble about how research in mice has little to do with humans, than keep fooling yourself. I'll take all the help a reputable doctor or scientist or medical college wants to give to prolong my life AND give me GOOD HEALTH at the same time. Many of us ae having our children late in life.My youngest was born when I was 38.I've got to live a long time to be there for her.My mother had me at 18!She's 70 now and I love having her around.I trust there is nothing in Dr. Bob's book that will hurt me -- but that will only help me. Should I still go to the doctor?OF COURSE!!!I have been getting yearly mamograms for 15 years, and only this year did I have a a small spot.I'm to get another exam in May 2002.I'm worried. They think it's nothing and say MOST OF THEM ARE BENIGN. What if i'm one of those woman not so lucky? I am not sure about Soy Isoflavones (the dosage) although Dr. Bob talks about it.Thanks, and KEEP READING!!... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

"Dieting is like holding your breath," NBC News medical correspondent Bob Arnot writes in his introduction. "You can only do it so long." His book details ways to eat a lot of food but still get lean. He recommends long lists of "hard" foods--those that your body has to work to process and put to use--and "soft" foods, which make you fat. There's also quite a bit about using foods to manipulate the neurotransmitters that control moods, like serotonin, which can make us feel good about ourselves, and dopamine, which makes some feel alert and productive. A well-written and thorough dietary sourcebook. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sound theory, hard to do in real life. Beans, beans, beans!
All the principles espoused in this book are basically sound and seem to be well rooted in science. I had to keep reading the book over and over, though, in order to figure out what you're supposed to eat! I'm pretty well versed in nutrition, but I have a hard time planning real-life meals that conform to his guidelines. How many homemade lowfat bean burritos can one person eat? If he were to follow up this book with a menu planning book or a cookbook, the usefulness of this diet would go way up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works For Me!!!
For all my early life, I was one of those people who could basically eat whatever and whenever I wanted and never gain an ounce. Then somewhere in my thirties my wait started to creep up from my steady 150 lbs until , a couple of years ago, it had reached 175 lbs, which on my 5'7" frame was more than I was comfortable with.Through eating smaller portions and exercise I was able to get it slowly down to about 167 pound on a couple of occasions, only to gain it all right back as soon as I stopped excersizing for just a few days.I somehow vaguely knew that my problem had something to do with my now 48-year-old metabolism and my total lack of any kind of knowledge about nutrition.Having read Dr. Bob Arnot's "Turning Back the Clock" I was a little familiar with some of his ideas and liked his writing, so one day, while browsing the web, I ordered "Dr. Bob Arnot's Revolutionary Weight Control Program".Loosely following the book's eating guidelines I had lost 5 lbs before I finished the 4th chapter.I had originally thought I would be thrilled to be able to get down to and maintain 165lbs and fantasized about weighing in at 160lbs.Now, after a couple of months I've easily gotten my weight down to a steady 158lbs and feel younger and more energetic than I have in years!I really feel like 155 or even 150 lbs is not out of reach!Of course, I've always liked the knids of foods he prescribes in the book, high-fiber cereals, beans, etc., but I just did not know how and when to eat them for their maximum benefits. I think the strong points of this book, and exaxctly what I needed, is that it gives very specific suggestions and reccomendations which the reader can put into effect right away and see immediate results. This book has worked like magic for me, and I look forward to re-reading it for a better understanding of exactly why this program works like it does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great -- Even for Women above 45
I read this book in late April, started following it on May 1 and have lost 35 lbs since then. I'm healther, have twice the energy and have decreased my family's food bill. Not bad for a $20 investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're over 30 - BUY THIS BOOK!
"Wear and Tear" is a gem that should be on the best seller list. This book has been a real eye-opener for me and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help slow the damage we heap on our bodies as we age. But to be honest I've been a Dr. Arnot fan since he wrote "Guide to Turning Back the Clock", another excellent book (that needs to be updated).4-0 out of 5 stars A cure for Wear and Tear?
This book is great for people who suffer from Arthritis, who are overweight, have reducecd flexibilty, or any other pain associated with their joints. Bob Arnot, one of the authors of this book believes strongly in yoga and stretching as exercises for people suffering with pain. In his practice, he does prescribe asprin and NSAIDS, but disourages the overuse of them. He believes more in exercise. Not strenuous exercise, just exercises like bicycling, walking, or swimming. Exercise is the key to strong muscles and joints. He also gives ideas for proper footwear, no high arched shoes. The book is jumpy as you read it, but overall, it would be of good use to those who suffer with joint pain. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title full of clichés and obvious advices
"The Biology of Success. Feel Great, Focus your energy, Master the power of positive thought, Maximize your potential for success". Absolutely misleading, I bought the book, and I can tell that you probably won't learn anything new from it. The topics Dr. Robert Arnot addresses are covered more thoroughly and helpfully in other books.
2-0 out of 5 stars Eh.....
I bought this book partly because I am around 90% obsessive compulsive---hoping to gain a little more insight in how to plan my day and use time to my advantage...and partly to see if Dr. Arnot knew anything any other life oriented person didn't.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Wonderful--inspiring and very readable"
As I read this book I thought to myself, how wonderful to read a book, authored by an M.D., which is actually written in English (as opposed to doctorish). This book is written in such a way that anyone can read it.Most of the information is basic information, but the picture the author portrays seems like a medical marvel. There are so many ways that we can improve our lives, and move closer to success, that Dr. Arnot barely scratches the surface. The chapters on exercize and moving beyond our comfort zones motivated me the most.Dr. Arnot abolished the age old myth that we should not over-train, but rather push ourselves to new levels if we want to improve. That is something I have long agreed with. This book is not chock-full of new information, if that is what you are looking for.Rather, this book is one of many of the well written volumes of success available.I highly recommend it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not for men only
Sensible and practical. No quick fixes, but collects a bunch of good tips into one place.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Guide
Dr. Bob's "Guide to Turning Back the Clock" is 100 percent accurate and a good motivational tool for both men and women.I had no idea that enriched flour ... is so bad for your body.He has some very good ideas on how to eat and "fuel" your body.I especially liked the sections on roller blading and cross country skiing. This is the "one" diet/fitness book to have at your side.Cousin Arnold is right: "Be the best you've ever been. Now is the time and this is the book!"

5-0 out of 5 stars How can Schwartenegger be wrong
great book, very informative, talks about not only diet, but also the importance of exercise and mixing it up.Not just cardio but muscle building/strengthening as well.No BS in his book, everything makes sense.Oh yeah, Arnie recommends it. ... Read more
