1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy resource
First off, I am on the Fat Flush Plan, and enjoy it very much. However, several things about the plan and this book in particular really offend me:
5-0 out of 5 stars Lose weight, lower cholestrol & cleanse your Body!
After my sister was told that her cholestrol was 319, I asked what she was doing about it.She told me that she and her husband (who lost 35 pounds: she lost 23 pounds) were doing the "Fat Flush Diet."I asked what that was and ended buying the book. After 18 months my sister's cholestrol was 198 and our family history points at heart disease.I read the book avidly, did the 2 week 'flush' and lost 12 pounds."The Fat Flush" food plan was how I usually ate anyway, however new ideas from "The Fat Flush Cookbook" (which I have since purchased) for making 'good for you' foods was welcomed.Try it as a lifestyle! It makes sense! You are what you eat!

Editorial Review

Richard Carlson has written numerous books encouraging folks not to"sweat the small stuff", and his title for teens is as warm, wise, and witty ashis previous works. His tone is one of an older family friend who manages toadvise while still maintaining the minimum level of coolness that teens requirefrom those who intend to guide them into adulthood. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars better than i thought
When my grandma first gave me this book, I thought it was gonna be another useless book saying "just be yourself" and all that [...]. But this book actually has substance and I was surprised that I actually got something out of it. Recommended to any teen on the "emotional roller coaster" who needs some guidance in their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I always read books I get for my daughter first to confirm that I got her something right/good for her. This one is no doubt a winner. The titles of each chapter were catching enough to make you curious as to what you were about to read and then the story you read were a great explanation to the sometimes funny and odd titles. The story in each chapter was absolutely great. They were short enough to keep any kids attention, make a good lesson and walk away feeling good that you learned something new and were inspired. The really great thing is, my 13 year old who usually complains about sitting still and reading because she'd rather be actively playing sports, isn't complaining a bit about winding down and reading this book. She loves that most chapters are only 2-3 pages each, but even better, she is mimicking what they are teaching and I'm loving it, too, as a mom. This is a great read, a great inspiration and a lot of the stories are what these kids can relate to.I plan to buy it as a gift to others, but I'm not sure if I should get it for the parents or the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!
This book definently helped me to chill out with certain struggles and people in my life. This book is a wonderful read for teenagers, because it suggests, not tells, how teenagers take things, and how they should act in certain situations. I would definently recommend this book to any teenager, or parents of their teenagers, who are struggling to find themselves, and also who are struggling in dealing with life. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars WORD GAMES
AGELESS BODY is Deepak's attempt to neutralize the word "old" as in old age.The writer has a knack for making common words, like "body, "mind" and "self," into profound concepts. His technique is to overlay his abstract ideas with suggestive experimental studies. But ambiguity in interpreting these studies abound.
3-0 out of 5 stars To Live To Eternity...
How would it feel to live forever; could you feel young when your body looks old.Your body is aging beyond your control because it has been programmed to live out the rules of collective conditioning. What you need is the body/mind connection.Beginning at age 30, the average human body starts to come unhinged: wrinkles appear, skin loses tone and freshness, muscles sag, fat catches up with muscle, eyesight and hearing taper off.As the bones thin and become brittle and break easily, stamina and endurance decline. You just can't do the things you are used to doing. To transform the patterns of the past, you must know what they are made of and how to stop the progress of deterioration. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that details Holistic approach to living longer

1-0 out of 5 stars To Good To Be True
The Adkins diet works because decreasing your carb intake decreases your calorie intake and it also works by your body loosing significant fluids secondary to increased urine excretions of ketones (from fat burning) and nitrogen (from use of protein for energy rather than the body's first choice of glucose from carbs).

Editorial Review

"I got skinny on fat," claims Suzanne Somers. It sounds too good to be true--a weight-loss program that lets you "eat incredible, rich foods in abundant portions while the unwanted pounds effortlessly melt away." Most nutritionists would cringe at the idea that people trying to lose weight don't need to restrict their dietary fat, but Suzanne Somers and her "Somercizers" insist it works. Fat (even saturated fat) isn't the enemy, she claims--it's "products loaded with sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, and chemicals and preservatives that replace Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed my Life
At 16 years old, I was gravely obese at 330 lbs.I was depressed and desperate, trying things from cutting portions to, at one point, eating nothing but bread and water for two weeks.I still gained weight no matter what I did.
2-0 out of 5 stars Suzanne Somers is giving middle aged women false hope
Suzanne Somers is partial scam artist. She claims that if you follow the advice in her books, prepare her recipes, use her skin products, etc. you can look as good as she does for her age. She never mentions all the cosmetic surgery and lipo suction she has had done. I know a number of Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists, and they all claim that there is no way that her face and body can look as good as it does for her age without Cosmetic Surgery on her face and body and touch-ups along the way. However, her books with their beautiful pictures of her and her recipes are lovely to look at but she is giving women who are in their 50's and beyond false hope. She should really write a book about all the work she has had done, what it was like, the cost (which the average woman cannot afford), etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suzanne or Marilu--who will be your guru?
I have just read this book as well as Marilu Henner's book.In some ways they are similar: both feature beautiful, healthy, glamourous, rich, 70s-sitcom-starring celebrities. Both claim to have discovered the secrets to health and vitality and slimness. Both are enjoyable to read and seem like someone you'd like to have as a friend. But the food...there's the big difference. Being an aficionado of the famous Eat Right 4 Your Type way of eating I have discovered that as a type O+ I feel much better on a protein/veggies/fruits regimen versus an almost vegetarian (fishaterian?) grains and veggies approach. I spent 6 years basically doing the Henner approach but found a much higher energy level and ability to maintain a healthy weight AFTER I quit eating so much starch and started eating meat again. As I read this book I couldn't help but notice that it is very close to what Dr. D'adamo recommends for Blood Type As in his book; lots of soy, grains and legumes, avoiding dairy and meat and keeping fat intake low. I am convinced that this is the best approach for some people, probably the Type As! Suzanne Somers' book which allows meats, dairy and fat (properly combined of course) works really well for me and probably other type Os who really do need protein to maintain their health and energy. Speaking strictly as a cook and an enthusiastic eater, the Somers book is much more fun. I found recipes in this book that I will definitely use. Therefore, my advice to these readers is: If you are a type O, then check out Suzanne's (and Peter D'adamo's ER4YT of course!) book and enjoy a tasty dinner!!!An aside--I saw Ms Sommers in person in Palm springs two years ago and she looks absolutely lovely. She must be doing something right! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Eat Great, Lose Weight (Miniature Edition)
I was very disappointed in this book even though it was a miniature. Some of the pages were blank, having not even been printed.I figure the book was a total loss of money spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eat as much as you want.
Sticking to the diet in the book I lost 35 lbs in five months.I find, interesting the fact that I can eat as much, or even more that I need as long as I keep the named proteins and carbs separate. This is the second copy of the book I have purchased and did so for my son and his family. He needs to lose about 20 pounds. I suggested that he follow the book suggestions very strickly and he should attain his goal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Great, Lose Weight- It really is THAT simple!
I am about to get married in a year, and as usual, I am looking for any way I can to slim down for that perfect wedding dress.Just a few days ago, I was sluggish, and depressed after going on Jenny Craig and failing at it.I went on Jenny Craig at age 16 and was uncannily successful, almost 10 years later, I decided to try it again, but to no avail. It just didn't fit my life style anymore, and I had a REALLY hard time refraining from cheating, and incorporating resturaunt and "non-menu" meals to fit my plan.

A breakup, divorce, or loss of a loved one isn't just the end of your relationship with that person. It's a continuation of every feeling of abandonment you've ever suffered. It's the loss of a system of approval you'd come to depend on. The struggle, as Gray points out in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent guidance for moving on/& letting go of pain/hurt
typical John Gray take on male/female differences in dealing with loss, break-ups, or divorce, I found myself learning more & realizing what we tend to do without awareness when we have had our hearts broken & life altered, especially after any long-term marriage/relationship of 20+ years, it is not only a loss/death of a marriage, it is a total change of life-style, mind-set,& new set of rules, but what John Gray helped me to see is without healing properly from this event or any major loss, that if we don't grieve, & feel all the emotions from sadness, sorrow, fear, to anger we can't release the unhealthy part of that relationship & move forward to love & be more balanced in a new relationship, I think it will help me & others who have a desire to grow & be more balanced, without as John says by (giving too much or avoiding intimacy) I would advise this to anyone ready to move forward in their life with a open heart towards others.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GOSPEL TRUTH AND "FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED"
This is the first book that clarified for me what men are doing when they use women the way they do after they get divorced.I'm a coach who works with midlife daters, and I see it all the time.I hoped it was just a few bad apples.Evidentally not.According to Gray, it's more the norm. That's like finding out there isn't a Santa Claus ... an illusion destroyed, but good to know, because a man "in transition" is simply not available emotionally, yet can be the most romantic and ardent seducer the woman has ever had, so she never sees it coming. He gets his ego back together and drops her like a hot potato.

The advice he gives men and women is ludicrious. There again

5-0 out of 5 stars Never Sick anymore
Dr. Chopra is personally responsible for my complete change in beliefs on being sick. In his book, he states clearly and simply that the natural state of the body is health, not illness. And after reading that, something in my mind locked onto it, believed it and for the last 10 years my body has been living it! I no longer think I need to be sick to build antibodies to various diseases, I simply allow my body to be healthy- even in the midst of coughing and wheezing people. It is a mindset for which I am extremely grateful! A highly valuable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reply to the "nonsense" review
A gentle response to the reviewer who thinks this book is nonsense: For your kind information, Carbon is an atom, not a molecule. Now, I am not really a fan of Deepak Chopra, but if this is the level of your scientific knowledge, you hardly have any right to make statements about Dr. Chopras lack or otherwise of scienticic knowledge!
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Nonsense - some miss the point
To those reviewers that claim this book is nonsense are completely missing the point. In my opinion the author is expanding traditional Western thinking around healing. Not that we can actually study and manipulate the quantum level of our own bodies, but rather entertain new ways of enhancing our own healing through the power of our own mindsRead more

Editorial Review

If you've been a yo-yo dieter for years or if you can eat a pound of pasta at one sitting, this book may very well be an eye opener. In simple--but never condescending--language, it explains the roots of carbohydrate cravings and teaches you how to normalize your insulin levels to prevent future food binges. Regulated insulin levels in turn help to temper serotonin levels, so food cravings and mood swings are prevented. The authors, both research scientists (one a health psychologist, the other a pathologist), have lost and kept off a total of 200 pounds between them. They've based this book on nearly a decade's worth of research, during which they've helped nearly 80 percent of their patients lose weight and keep it off for at least a year.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A TREAT WHEN YOU EAT !
I like this book very much ! I followed this diet with a friend and she an I were trying to lose weight . Guess what, THE DIET DID WORK ! The book tells you what you have to eat threw the course of the day with foods that are low in carbohydrates. You can decide which meal of the day you choose to have your goodies (TREATS).For EXAMPLE: If you want a Treat for breakfast it can only be with that meal. You can decide when you want to eat your treat, either it be lunch or dinner its up to you. But It will only be that one meal of the day that you choose. You CANNOT eat your TREATS in every meal. Of course, we incorporated EXCERCISE which also helped in the process to lose weight. I'm the type of person who likes VARIETY, so I have many books on diet and nutrition. So when I get bored with one diet I can choose another. When I do find the BEST diet for me, I will tell all you readers out there about it! Stay motivated and be forever fit!

2-0 out of 5 stars I'll Pass On Carb-Loading One Hour A Day
When you have lost weight, it's a very natural thing for others to be curious about how you lost your weight and kept it off. Whenever they have heard me tell my story, read my blog or book, or found out that I did it on the low-carb lifestyle, one question invariably has come up from time to time:
5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver
I've been reading reviews written by others and am a little irritated by some people putting this diet down.Everyone needs to understand that not every diet suits everyone and that just because a diet doesn't work for you does not mean it is rubbish or stupid, that's plain immaturity.Everybody is a complex being with different physical, mental, psychological and emotional needs.I can say that in my case if I hadn't come across this book in my local library on a day when I was feeling particularly tired and drained in every way,I don't even know if I would be alive today!I had been suffering from bulimia for two years bordering on anorexia. This book changed me and my life 10 years ago.I am and will be thankful forever.Thank you Dr Richard and Rachael Heller :-) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Easy
I really like what Carlson has to say. Very refreshing. Some of his ideas, while not all new, are very powerful. Takes the focus away from introspection and the past, and makes life both more practical and easier as well as more enjoya.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!
This book dispels the confusion that has wrecked too many lives. It offers five key principles all readers should embrace in understanding the wonders of life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but...
I have to agree with all of the reviewers below: This book has some valuable insights. And because I am not unfamiliar with the concepts (see my review of "Napkin Notes on the Art of Living") I was interested to read a different presentation of similar material.Yes, we control our thoughts, our thoughts affect our moods, and feelings are a good indicator of when our thought process has derailed -- ie we're not living in the moment. And with a lot of patience and practice, we can navigate even the hardest things in life with more grace. But there were times while reading that my little voice said "This guy is making it sound way too easy...OR he's way too happy..."He insists that ignoring your low moods or negative feelings isn't "denial" but "deferral" of dealing with those feelings until you're in a better frame of mind, but often we aren't given that luxury.I worked really hard to maintain respect when, in two or three lines, he described how he was able to cope when a dear friend died in a car crash on the way to standing up to his wedding. Was it really as easy as he makes it sound?Human beings are complex, and often overwhelmed by feelings. So while this is good advice for many of life's ups and downs, I suspect the more complicated scenarios will require a bit more. ... Editorial Review

A woman tells you, within minutes of meeting her, that she's in a support group for incest victims. In theory, this woman is trying to recover from her childhood trauma, but in reality, Caroline Myss writes, she's one of a growing army of people who practice "woundology," the use of their pain and suffering to manipulate those around them. Myss first noticed this phenomenon in the late 1980s, and began to analyze why so many people seemed to choose to carry such painful problems so proudly through life, to define themselves by the awful things that had happened to them. She offers a program to use "symbolic power"--a deep, spiritual insight that surpasses any conjured by the conscious mind--to craft a genuine conclusion to the illness or injury. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Empowering... if that's what you really want
Why People Don't Heal and How They Can (WPDH) is a (potentially) valuable and empowering piece of non-fiction literature in the field of self-health and healing. It sheds light on many truths gleaned by Caroline's personal and direct experience in working with thousands of people wanting (and not wanting) to heal physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.
3-0 out of 5 stars People Do Heal--just not all at once
In Why People Don't Heal and How They Can, Caroline Myss Ph.D and medical intuitive, explores healing from using the age old energy chakra system. As in her previous book, Anatomy of the Spirit, Ms. Myss explains the ages old concept of the 7 energy chakras found in the human body and how their balance (or lack of it) affects our health. But here she takes those concepts a step further, relating them to both the 2,000 year long astrological ages and 7 Christian sacraments. Those may seem like conflicting philosophies but the symbolism as it plays out in our culture and in our daily lives was surprisingly pertinent. The Aquarian Age energy underlies holistic thought-and in terms of healing represents the increasingly recognized concept that we cannot heal part of an organism without treating the whole of it-body, mind and spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balance of Letting Go and Drawing Closer
There is nothing new in Angeles Arrien's book about the second half of life. Indeed, there isn't meant to be. Our lives at midpoint are about putting aside newness and embracing the ancient, the everlasting, the always true.
2-0 out of 5 stars The worst of its kind
I found this effort weak and even irritating on several levels.I'll start general and get more specific.
5-0 out of 5 stars glad eldership
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE SECOND HALF OF LIFE as an enlightening & forthright guide to spiritual maturity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Healing
This is my fourth purchase of Weil's CDs in the past 14 months. The first two were for my partner who was anticipating and then recovering from diverticulitis surgery. The second and third pairs were for friends enduring chemo and radiation after cancer surgery. The latest was for my oldest nephew who is dealing with a currently inoperable/untreatable intracranial hemorrage. My nephew, a hard-living Texas oil industry type, was the only one resistant to the concept. After actually trying the process, he's on his way to a 360. My partner and my friends didn't resist at all and put these meditational practices to good use immediately with very positive results. I might add that they, and I, continue to use the CDs for health maintenance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Choice for Learning Breath Yoga
If you have never done breath work before, Dr. Weil's CD: Breathing The Master Key to Self Healing is an excellent first choice that will provide a series of short exercises to improve your breathing technique, quiet your mind, and help you clear your daily tension and anxiety prior to deeper meditation. This initial preparation assumes that you know little about breath discipline (a form of Yoga), and takes you from the very beginning with a kindly voice and beautiful music.Dr. Weil's producer has taken care to provide the best quality sound, the best musicians, and even a high quality CD that will resist wear.(I use my CD every day on my bus commute to town.)

Editorial Review

The "meantime," according to best-selling author and inspirationalspeaker Iyanla Vanzant, is that in-between stage of life when you're gatheringup strength, evaluating past mishaps, and preparing for the next chapter. Usingthe metaphor of psyche as house, Vanzant believes that the meantime offers aperfect opportunity for tackling a rigorous cleaning. "We are going to gothrough every inch of your emotional and spiritual house and clean up the mess, clear out the debris, fix the leaks, stop the squeaks, and reveal and repair anydamage we can find," she promises in this workbook. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Mean time is still the present moment ... and should be made the most of
I just love this woman's deep passion and if you ever hear her speak ... you just get it in the gut how close to the bone her wisdom is! The tone is simple but the actions they inspire are not. It is not easy to be breaking lifelong habits and cleaning the residue of all the years they operated unconsciously in you. But ... it can be done ... and worth it. No one ever won an Olympic God Medal without the agony of hard endurance training over many years. Hence, why the meantime is just as precious as the moment on the podium.
5-0 out of 5 stars Iylanla Digs Deep
I have been a Starting Over Fan since I stumbled across it during the second season. Iyanla Vanzant is one of the "life coaches" who helps women deal with their pain and problems. In her book, Living Through the Meantime, Iyanla gives readers the necessary tools to dig deep and uncover all the muck and wounds so that they can be their authentic selves and not just a shell of a woman.
