4-0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read even for time management junkies
The Stephen R. Covey engine has kicked out numerous books on self-help, and they consult 200 out of the top 500 Fortune companies. After all of those books and years, they have heard enough stories and waded through enough crisis situations to get a good handle on what works and does not work in all of those environments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent thesis camouflaged by flowery writing
The author of "First Things First," Stephen Covey, Roger Merrill, and Rebecca Merrill, are all involved with the Franklin Covey Company--a company most known for training individuals and institutions in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."The purpose of "First Things First" is to provide an expanded, fuller treatment of some aspects of the Seven Habits. These aspects include the concepts of "Sharpening the Saw" (making time to renew and develop your mental, social, physical, and spiritual health), Quadrant II (things that are important yet not urgent), Personal Mission Statements, What Matters Most (making sure you spend your time in the most important activities and relationships), Roles and Goals, Synergy and Inter-dependence, and Leadership Styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Archetype Cards are a Fabulous Writer's Tool
These cards are great as a writer's tool. I bought The Archetype Cards by Caroline Myss to help in my writing.
3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but not brilliant
We carry all of our archetypes in our psyche. The problem with this deck is that there are too many and the instructions are not clear enough on how to work with the selections you choose. It's a bit of information overload and complicated to someone whose not too familiar with astrology, etc. For the serious Jungians this is great but for the rest .... be prepared to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Archetype Card Collection
"..archetypes are not passive entities floating around in the psyche like old family portraits hanging in a dusty ancestral castle. They take an active role as guardians and inner allies, awakening you when you're in danger of falling into destructive behavior." ~Caroline Myss

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Care of the Child
Almost all sleep books talk about bedtime routines, sleep associations, and getting kids to fall asleep on their own, but Elizabeth Pantley does a good job of explaining why this is important.Imagine that your baby 'falls asleep rocking, nursing, sucking a pacifier' and then enters a light sleep phase and notices that everything is different from when she fell asleep. Is she likely to keep sleeping or wake up?Of course she is likely to wake up.The no-cry sleep solution will also help you to 'Change Your Baby's Sleep Associations' and 'Help Your Baby to Fall Back to Sleep on His Own' after he wakes up, whether you are breastfeeding, co-sleeping, or going back to sleep in his own crib.

3-0 out of 5 stars different strokes...
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to sleep problems, and if someone tells you there is - run the other way. Unfortunatley, what DOES exist is a whole lot of guilt.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it IS work - but worth it!
I love reading the critics of this book. They are looking for a gentle method of getting their child to sleep, but expect it to happen in a week or less.Parenting doesn't end at eight o'clock. And, like teaching your child to read, eat, go to the potty etc, it takes time and patience and practice and lots of reinforment. And this is coming from an exhausted mom, folks. And I know, from an sleep-deprived place in your brain, you tell yourself the crying is okay, it's not going to damage them - and it may be true. But going to your child when they're crying and holding them or nursing them tells them they can trust you, and THAT lasts.I used this book with my now 3 1/2 year old - she never slept...and this worked after a couple of months.I did let her fuss beside me in the bed as I held her, but she didn't so it alone.I so don't get that!Let a 4/5/6/7 month old baby lay there in a dark room, alone and bawl their head off until you've broke them like a horse and fall asleep.Insane.Elizabeth's book is just honest reading, makes you feel supported and not alone. If you want to help your child to sleep w/o CIO, seriously, not just as a pretty thought, but a commitment - this is the book for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This certainly is a purist's view, but that doesn't make it bad
I see a lot of critics of the Ornish diet suggested in the book; however, it certainly seems as if there is a lot of data available to document the results and support the promotion of the Ornish diet. However, I would strongly suggest reading both Dr. Dean Ornish's book on reversing heart disease and Dr. Julian Whitaker's book on the same.I think that the Whitaker book provides a much more practical view and also displays what may be a good diet (and life-style, etc) for (1) a healthy person that wants to prevent possibility of heart disease, a "preventative" approach, and (2) a person who has heart disease and needs a "reversal" approach. That said, Dr. Ornish's book is an eye-opener and does cause a concerned reader to focus on the level of discipline and focus that a "reversal" diet and life-style requires.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there these days
After my older brother suddenly died of coronary artery disease at age 40 due to genetically high cholesterol, I needed to learn everything possible on the subject so that I could avoid suffering the same fate.I read all the books on the shelf, among them Dr. Ornish's.I disliked this book because it is rather narcissistic and is focused more on Dr. Ornish himself than on educating us about how to avoid heart disease.Take a look at chapter 1 and you'll see what I mean: "I was trained to treat hypertension..."; "I first became interested in conducting research on heart disease in 1975..."; "I began to wonder..."; "I went to the medical library and began reading extensively"; "It seemed like an exciting opportunity, so in 1977 I decided to take a year off..."; "I hadn't had enough clinical experience to be jaded..."; "I was unwittingly giving many of them hope for the first time since their illness had been diagnosed"; "I went back to medical school and graduated in 1980"; "From 1981 to 1984, I completed my internship and medical residency in Boston."; "In July 1984, I moved to San Francisco..."This is just the tedious first six pages.Trust me, it goes on and on like this.Do you want to learn about how the heart works? You'll finally get a few sentences on that subject when you get to page 42, squeezed in between more "I did this and I did that."You'll get a little info on LDL and HDL when you get to page 51.Sure, there is useful information within the 672 pages of this book, but you'll be forced to become an expert on Dr. Ornish and his life story to find it.And remember, this book is more than 15 years old.Perhaps back in 1990 he needed to devote 300 pages to convincing people that he was correct in believing that diet, exercise, and stress affect your risk of heart disease, but that that is common knowledge and not controversial now.The research is far more advanced in today's world. If you are interested in Dr. Ornish personally and the history of the study of heart disease in the 1970s and 1980s, you'll probably enjoy this book. But if you are serious about educating yourself on heart disease and how best to avoid it, I would recommend Dr. Robert Superko's "Before the Heart Attacks : A Revolutionary Approach to Detecting, Preventing, and Even Reversing Heart Disease" (2003) or Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz's "The Expert Guide to Beating Heart Disease: What You Absolutely Must Know" (2005).These books are more up to date and provide far more useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When I follow the diet and work on the other aspects of the program I feel better, lose weight, am happier and have better test results. The book is easy to read and understand. The program is not for the die hard meat lover. It takes commitment to follow. From the reviews I have read and comments from coworkers and friends, it also takes an open mind and balanced attention.I am currently purchasing this book for my adult son.It all depends on what a reader is looking for.Dr. Ornish does not give a quick fix.I am a believer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just in time
I'm going through a difficult time at work. All the people in my department who were here when I started a year ago have left and I'm the last one left. The new hires are gossips and backstabbers and I found myself stooping to their level. We have evaluations and our first staff meeting meant to blame and accuse others coming up. I found this book just in time. Alot of this is positive reenforcement of concepts most people know but its great to have the reminder to me about how people behave and when to just let the small stuff go and its a great pick me up. I keep my copy in my purse and read it on breaks when co workers are getting me down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent "Don't Sweat" Book
Here is a small gem in the self-help arena.Richard Carlson, psycologist and author, has invested himself in helping people find more joy and peace in life.He promotes stress reduction and 'success' through slowing down and worrying less.He has penned a series of "Don't Sweat" books. This installment focus on the work place. In it, Carlson record 100 tips, tricks, attitudes, etc. that will, if used, reduce help you reduce your stress level at work and perhaps make it a more enjoyable experience. Here are a few samples:

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I love Christiane Northrup's holistic view of our bodies, minds and spirits. As someone who has felt alone and crazy at 47, I am grateful to feel validated and reassured. Not all things in the book apply to me at this time, but were very interesting and I am glad to learn new information about what is coming. This book is great for anyone who is ready to believe in the power they have to manage thier own health.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning
Do not buy this book unless you have a very high tolerance for new age gibberish. There is factual information here, but it is buried in gushy self-absorption.I bought it for psychotherapy patients who are going through menopause, but I'd be embarrassed to lend it out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not far enough
The Wisdom of Menopause provides an accurate description of what happens to a woman's body during and after ovarian failure (menopause). This book describes in detail the negative effects of menopause (ovarian failure) while still describing it as a natural and normal process to embrace. I don't believe we should be so willing to allow our ovaries to fail, instead we should look for ways to help them work better and for longer. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Really just okay...and a little disappointing
I believe in many attachment parenting principles, so I ordered this book once my child reached the appropriate age for discipline.I have to say I was more than just a little disappointed with this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars I love Dr Sears but only liked this book
I am a huge believer in attachment parenting, but found this book to be a dollar short and way to late. I bought it when my son was 18 months old and reading it felt like I had already made tons of mistakes that wern't reversable as a parent. This book may be more helpful for "parents-to-be" or brand new parents. I also felt like some of the expectations were a little high... all in all I thought that the ideas and the general guidlines were good, just not many examples to help.

2-0 out of 5 stars a working mom
Dr Sears completely ignores the HUGE population of working mothers! The book goes on and on and on about attachment parenting and how you should allow your child to disattach from you and not the other way around....well, the majority of the mother's in this world do not have this choice!Furthermore, he made me feel as though I was a selfish mother for not carrying my daughter on my hip for the first year of her life.My daughter is very attached to me and we have a very close relationship....yet I started back at work full time when she was 8 weeks old.I feel that Dr Sears only addressing those mothers that stay at home full time and even then he cautions about leaving your child!Easy for him to say!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone!!!
This audio book was a great source of information, not only for helping me figure out my past anger issues, but how to deal with future issues. The examples in the book were real life and I could place myself in those situations.I have listened to it more than once, and I still keeping finding ways to avoid anger and work on the real issues with my kids, parents, co-workers and spouse.Again, a must for everyone...it may sound strange, but would make a great wedding present!

Dr. Chopra is a dear man.To be in his presence is a powerful experience. But sometimes it's painful to read his work, as when he goes over the same material again and again, chapter after chapter.Mimicking his one time spiritual master, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who does the same thing so much more elegantly.

I bought this book not knowing fully what it was all about.I was very surprised to discover that my 3rd grade daughter has been doing these exercies since kidnergarten, just under a different name - Brain Gym.Many exercises are the same, they just have different names such as cross crawl, brain buttons, turning our listening ears on, etc. They have definetly helped her in school. Her teachers have taught them to her, so I am excited to learn the exercises too.

Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.Read more

Dr. Oz, the heart wizard, is of Turkish descent and attempts to combine East and West traditions of healing during post-surgery.He is a heart surgeon located in New York City.First of all,he is searching for the elusive one universal healing endeavor. Some things we all need are recommended such as Love is a major healing force, as is religious faith in one God.He is of the opinion that modern medicine is not perfect.Nothing is perfect, not even beauty, he says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins is amazing!
This book is absolutely indispensable for your study of Organic Chemistry.I am a student of Dr. Atkins and am glad other people can learn from him through this manual. Not only does each answer have a detailed explaination of the answer, but also each chapter has a self-test of about 30 questions (answers in the back).Note that the text by Carey has the answers to the questions in each chapter (about 1/3 of the total questions in the book), but he does not include end-of-chapter questions' answers or anything but just the answer (as opposed to Atkin's details).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solutions Manuel
This book accompanies Francis Carey's Organic Chemistry Textbook. It includes solutions to all of text problems and the solutions are worked out well to allow the student to understand the thought process involved in solving them.Truely, a thorogh solutions manuel!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts I had while in college
An all-around good book for an intro to organic chemistry.Good example problems, plenty of end-of-chapter questions and concise explanations of critical concepts.Lays an excellent foundation of molecular theory as it pertains to Organic Chemistry in the first few chapters.End of chapter review (very thorough) gives tables of important reactions, their respective reagents/catalysts, and in some cases real-world applications (very helpful).Of course, I had excellent teachers for these courses, so I am a bit biased in favor of this book. But, organic chemistry is inherently not an extremely difficult subject to understand; mostly memorization.I found the graphics somewhat boring, though, and felt they could have aided in understanding concepts, as might be the case with students who stuggle with this subject; maybe the newer editions are better; I haven't seen them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite!
The Pregnancy Book is by far my favorite pregnancy book. This is the only one I sat down and read chapter by chapter.(I hated What to Expect When You Are Expecting.) This book gives a nice general month-by-month overview of what is going on with you and the baby. Each chapter covers how you may be feeling emotionally and physically, concerns you might have, how the baby is growing, topic of the month (nutrition, childbirth, tests etc.) and a diary section.
4-0 out of 5 stars This IS the Book
This was my pregnancy bible. It had all of the information I needed and it wasn't scary. There are so many horror stories out there to frighten first time moms and so many books with dire advice that is little better than listening to old wives tales. The information in this book is presented in a thoughtful and non-judgemental manner and it really touches on all of the concerns pregnant women face, including working while pregnant and how to ask for pregnancy leave. My only criticism is that I wanted more pictures. I wanted to see more of how my baby was developping each week. That information is in there... just not enough of it to satisfy my insatiable curiosity about the new person I was carrying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful all the way through
From the day I missed my period up until now with only a month to go until the birth, hardly a day has passed that I haven't consulted this book for something. It is information-packed, yet readable; reassuring, yet realistic; and gives a balanced perspective on potentially controversial things like homebirth and prenatal testing. Like most of the Sears books, it does have the unfortunate tendency to assume that its audience is made up of women in traditional, male-as-breadwinner marriages, and it does get overly corny at times. But those minor problems are easy to overlook in light of how terrific the rest of the book is. ... Read more
