Not a good philosophy book
If you are looking for a new and SUBSTANTIATED philosophical view, this is not the right book. An excellent work of fiction, great writing, yes, these you will find in this book -- but not a strong philosophy.
"Walden" Meets "Easy Rider"
Anyone with moderate intelligence and sufficient leisure can work out their own private philosophy.The worth of such a philosophy should not be measured by comparison to the great philosophers of the past (or present); rather we should ask how well does it assist its creator in coping with life.Some personal philosophies are crafted in such a way that they help, not just their creator, but large numbers of their creator's fellow beings.Thus it is with the personal philosophy of Robert M. Pirsig, who laments that he has not had an original thought in years.
It is worth rereadng several times
I read this book several times over the years and each time I get something new out of it. I'm a Christian and though this book derives some of its underpinnings from Eastern philosopy, the book gives a great overview of Western civilization. How the book uses geography, the personal relationships, his past history, and Greek and Eastern philosophy to prove his thesis is fascinating. The book has problems. The main character does not follow his own philosophy in some ways. Pirsig makes too broad of generalizations about the Greek philosophers. Phaedrus's experience at the University of Chicago does not ring true to me. However, the book challenges the reader to think, to ponder life in general and contemplate on how the branches of knowledge tie together.

Been there, done that
I was 13 when this book was published.Though it might have been helpful to read then, reading it now was rather pointless.I went through many of the experiences her clients went through, and I quickly grew bored with their stories.
Reviving Ophelia

Saving the minds of parents of adolescent girls
this book gives a great overview of what our children are facing. it was written in the 1990's and refers to that date, however i believe that the truths it holds are even more true today. i found it full of great information that explained alot of things. however, if you are looking for what to do to save them, this book does not really spend too much time on focusing on that though it does go over a couple suggestions briefly. i would highly recommend this book to anyone with children be they teens or not, be they girls or boys the information is invaluable. good luck to all of you out there. ... Mr. Rohn is truly an excellent person and an incredible inspiration.This book turned my life around!!Superb, fantastic!!!

My personal favorite...and my 6 year old's!
I felt compelled to review this product after seeing some negative reviews of Mr. Rohn's CD.This is the first time I've reviewed a product of any kind.This program has changed my life.I have listened to and read scores of CD's and books over the past 15 years and this is the only one I felt like I truly needed.The principles contained therein are so fundamental that I feel like anything I investigate now is simply an addendum to what Mr. Rohn has taught me.Once I went to work on what I could change (i.e. me) my life has taken on new meaning.As Jim says, "learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job."Along with these two CD's, which are always loaded in my car's CD changer, I like to regularly refer to the book "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind," which I keep in my nightstand.My 6 year old daughter ASKS me to play Jim when she rides in the car!I'm not sure what to think of that!

Very Helpful Presentation
I have listened to many "self-help gurus", usually gleaning a good point here and there. I have listened to this presentation many times and find it very helpful, with many unique, interesting, and uplifting insights.

Great author, great book!
This is a very interesting book--after I read it I wanted to read all of Allender's other publications. He is a great author and this book was very hard for me to put down once I started! A great book for any Christian who has ever faced challenges in their life.

Biblical Sufferology
"The Healing Path" traverses the middle ground in biblical sufferology (a theology of suffering). That is, it accurately avoids two common extremes as Christian writers attempt to address suffering: a.) the extreme of staying stuck in the past by blaming the past, b.) the extreme of denying the past by ignoring the past.
Not much to say...
"Don't waste your pain", says the publisher's note on the rear cover of "The Healing Path", a recent offering from the prolific and popular Dan Allender. Allender suggest that life inevitably entails suffering, and that the key is to suffer successfully. Suffering leads to redemption and life, but most suffer pointlessly and unconstructively, not knowing how to suffer properly.

Get rid of back pain - FOREVER
Hello All. I am 29 currently and I have had backpain on and off for over 9 years now. After a particularly nasty back spasm at the gym 2 years back ( where I could hardly walk), I was getting desparate. I looked at physiotherapy,and briefly at some other forms of exercise. I could not find lasting results anywhere and then I came across this book. It was god send. I read it in couple of hours flat. Re-read it next day. Thought a lot about what the author suggests are reasons behind the pain. It is generated from within and the cure also should come from within us. Anyone who thinks that cure CAN ONLY come fromoutside is going to be looking for a cure, the rest of their lives. I analyzed the book ( I am an engineer) and trusted the book.
5 years with back pain, no back pain for 6 years.
There I was, 18 years old, after exercising badly in the gym I developed back issues. An x-ray stated I had a back abnormality. For 5 years I had back pain, evey single day, mid to lower back pain. You know whats its like, the type thats always there.
Great Book!
Dr. Sarno is a true pioneer in regards to diagnosing and treating back pain and has made a tremendous contribution with his discovery of the mind/body connection for this condition. I did, however, as a number of reviewers have pointed out, after reading Healing Back Pain felt the need for additional steps.

Eye-opening and thought-provoking, well written:a must read for anyone interested in the field!
In this well-written, very accessible book, Martin Seligman points out that traditional psychology has always focused on the pathology of the human condition:illness and trauma.By understanding more about what makes people exceptionally well - happy, positive, optimistic - and recognizing that those who have these characteristics are more likely not only to have rewarding lives, but also to be successful in the world, Seligman believes that those who are naturally pessimistic or focused on the down-side can shift their perspective and become happier people.
Positively Disturbing
This is the first time I have written a review.In this particular case, I felt it was my responsibility to forewarn potential readers of the disturbing contents of this book.I've read several "self help" books on subjects ranging from introversion to optimistic thinking.I found this book to be of little help and quite disturbing.The book is filled with tests and self evaluations.I do not believe it is necessary to know where one falls on the optimist/pessimist scale.Often, such tests can only further depress or make anxious an already vulnerable reader.In Chapter 5, the author uses an extremely horrific and disturbing story to illustrate a five step process to forgiveness.I was further sickened by the author's list of "bodily pleasures" in Chapter 7.Rather than feeling uplifted by this book, I found myself feeling upset and outraged by the author's egotism, ignorance, perversion and insensitivity.I caution anyone seeking advice on optimism

From a person who was once very unhappy...
I believe this book goes a long way toward directing those who are still seeking happiness at a feeling level. But, in order to be totally fulfilled we have to get over our (narcissistic) need to always look at our transient feelings as any indications of how we are doing. I completely disagree with Dr. Seligman's statements on our 'set points.' I used to be chronically unhappy. I moved so far beyond that 'set point' that I do not even remember who I used to be. I think that 'set points' are an unecessary perspective in such a happy book. I asked a teacher who has helped me greatly in shifting my perspective. Here is part of his response:

Learn to let go.
I have been recommending this book to my astrology clients and people who take my Creative Living class for years.It helps its readersto focus on how to change difficult patterns relational patterns--which we all know is not easy.Readers feel the kindness and compassion of the author as well as her expertise throughout the book.
A must for everyone!!!
This audio book was a great source of information, not only for helping me figure out my past anger issues, but how to deal with future issues.The examples in the book were real life and I could place myself in those situations.I have listened to it more than once, and I still keeping finding ways to avoid anger and work on the real issues with my kids, parents, co-workers and spouse.Again, a must for everyone...it may sound strange,but would make a great wedding present!

If you read and follow the principles in this book you will make enough money on your trades to pay for this book many times over. I have been active in the market for years (Averaging <20% return a year) and I agree with this author completely having lived out the greed, fear, and mistakes he talks about.Read this book and save yourself a lot of unnecessary losses.

Sensational
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest.Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing.Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly.Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.

Great tape
I listened to this tape again this weekend and what stood out for me was telling the truth.The real truth of who I am, what I want someone else to know about me.Taking off the masks as it were.I wa sthinking about this in relationship to dating as it's the huge topic amongst my friends and exploring why different peopel are successful in being in relationship and even getting into them and why others have successful relationship.I'm single and love the dates I go on, finding them to be wonderful experiences for getting to know someone, to revealing myself.Though I have other friends that have a cynicism about it, that fear that intimacy and engagement.Its funny, in some ways, tellign the TRuth, being like Hey, this is me.I dress nicely for dates and not a slob because of both self value and teh art of showing up and sometimes being on a date with someone who doesn't hold that value and worse yet criticizes me for doing so and standing firm in that.I don't show up in tux but I do dress well, in fact I honestly like clothes, nice ones not as a flaunting of my money or financial progress in life but because certain fabrics feel and fit better.However the lack of discussion and the fact that people assume judgment made me question my appearance a few times.Thsi tape, talking about the Truth of who you are, telling someone the Truth when you show up made me really reflect back on that.I've ha dthese tapes for years, been listenign to them for at least 10 years and every once in awhiel I pull them out and spend some time with them.There's an African word for learning something on one level one day and then on an entirely different and deeper level the next and the next after that.That's how I view this tape series. One of the best guided meditations
Kelly's soothing voice and tranquil story make this one of the best guided meditation tapes available.If you have heard any of the meditation tapes related to the popular Celestine Prophesy book(s)and liked them, you willvery much enjoy this tape.A very pleasant experience!

52 weeks to growing rich with Napolean Hill
I have to admit that I am a huge fan of Napolean Hill. I loved Think and Grow Rich and I love virtually everythingelse he wrote as well. Home Truths
Napolean Hill talks about attitude, outlook and how they influence a person's destiny. He's right and communicates this message to anyone who will listen. This book also has updated material more relevant to our time. If anyone is serious about changing their circumstance then this book is a good place to start.
