4-0 out of 5 stars The Course and Marianne
I have known and known of Marianne Williamson for several years, and know of the inner battles she had until she discovered the Course on Miracles. I believe this book is good for those who have lost sight of our purpose on Earth, and those who may need a swift kick of unconditional love to get them on the right path.Much like Louise Hay, Rayna Gangi, Andrew Weil, and others, Marianne tries to show us that love is possible, necessary, and expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
It would be nice if everyone in the world could read this book, it may be a more peaceful world.A Return to Love is a heart opening book on a path of inner healing.Another place to view inspirational work is the website SmileAcrossYourHeart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Funny
This book hit the nail on the head for me. It helped me extricate myself from a life time of having to deal with my mother's emotional blackmail, PLUS confront my own maladaptive patterns that were equally bad. Uncannily enough, I had saved photocopies of a pile of letters I had sent to a long-term past boyfriend with whom I had a dysfunctional relationship. I went through all of those letters and underlined all my blackmailing tricks and named which category they belonged to. What a revelation and how wonderfully freeing. I then prayed that God would give me the courage to overcome these ways and replace it with courage and insight to be honest. Wow! I've never looked back ... only to consult the book every now and again for a booster! And to re-read those letters for a laugh.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book - It really helped!
I was fortunate to find a great book that explains how people displace negative feelings onto others - and how to respond to that. This is a great resource - thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars This can be a life-saving book!
If you think you might be a victim of a parent or loved one who is using emotional blackmail to manipulate you and keep you from growing or changing, then this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever
i love this book, i'm 26 years old, and i have been doing alot of soul searching, this book has open my eyes about myself, how i am holding myself back because of all the stories i tell myself
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
After reading "The Dark Side of the Light Chasers," I expected the same level of insight in this volume.Instead, I found a smorgasbord of various religions that didn't really seem to do justice to any particular one.I realize this book is more self-help and self-discovery oriented, but the spiritual overtones were too strong and too garbled to be of any real help.Ford is a good writer, and she does have some helpful insights on personal care habits, so I give this one two stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical and really made me think!
I was given this book by my therapist, as she felt that I still needed to work through a lot of issues from my past and that this book may help me bring the experiences forward. I can honestly say that it did.

"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book that describes how to create a trend
I was fascinated by the original perspective in this thought provoking book about the evolution of an idea into a trend.Using easy to understand examples, Malcolm Gladwell explains the mechanics of the process, and enlightens us about the the various people involved.I strongly recommend this book.I also recommend Robert Cialdini's book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. These books complement each other and should be read together.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tipping Point
Staff writer for The New York Post, Malcolm Gladwell, explains what causes a concept, idea or item to become an epidemic in The Tipping Point.Using case studies the reader will relate to (Sesame Street, Blues Clues, Crime in New York City in the 90's, Hush Puppies, Paul Revere's famous ride North), Gladwell discusses how and why people react the way they do in certain situations and to certain ideas/items.You'll look at your friends, co-workers and family in a different way as you consider who is a Connector, Maven or salesperson, you'll consider the context in which something happens as opposed to just the action, you'll think about everyday happenings in a different way after you read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars It had quite an unusual effect
I was looking for an original and valuable present for my boyfriend. I am very pleased with my decision to buy this book. It draws from several areas of knowledge and Malcolm Gladwell is a very skillful writer. He knows how to engage you from the first page till the last one and keeps you wondering what more you will learn from this incredible book. My boyfriend said that the tipping point and scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex are the best, most valuable and eye-opening books he has ever received as a present. Well, I don't hear such compliment every day. It was such a small thing for me to give him a present and yet it turned so important for him. What better proof for Gladwell's thesis. I also agree that we all should start paying more attention to the small, small things and details from our daily lives and the result may astound us. It takes so little to even change someone's life for better. This is one of the books, which I definitely recommend. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development isalternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatricpsychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you work w/ a difficult child
This well-organized, brilliantly thought-out book gives educators and parents a completely different way of thinking about how we lead all children but particularly difficult, abused, angry children. In short order it provides specific tools together with examples of what we can do to create a more peaceful, flexible child who can function successfully in the world and get along with others. The corresponding web site is extremely valuable in conjunction w/ this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Results-when nothing else has worked!
Thank you Dr. Greene, as reading this book has been more helpful to helping me understand my daughter, and has given us more tangible results than any other medication or therapy that we have tried. Things are not completely normal, but after instituting the behavior plan, they are MUCH BETTER. Every child is different, but in our specific case, the information that Dr. Greene presents makes so much sense, and his basket approach has really helped us avoid rages. This is a must read for parents of children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder, Bipolar, ODD, or ADHD. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Child? The Real Solution May Surprise You!
Frustrated by my son's age-inappropriate temper tantrums, I desperately searched for solutions. [He'd be set off by little things like making a mistake coloring and would rage for 1/2 hour or more ... still at age 6! Maybe this is understandable for a 2 year old, but there was something wrong here...] I approached it psychologically, certain that I somehow wasn't handling him properly. However, he just seemed out of control. No matter how I approached his anger, I couldn't make any significant changes. I purchased this book, but it didn't help me much, as I'd already tried so many behavioral approaches. I finally researched the Feingold Program (you can Google it) after observing that his biggest tantrums came immediately after eating foods with red food coloring. The Feingold Program primarily removes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from children's food and environment (yes, even those hand-stamps after gym class can have an effect!), and it's been around since the '70s. A family friend used it successfully for her 2 boys during that time, so I knew at least one success story. I bought the materials and dove in. Guess what -- no more tantrums! My boy is a changed person, and I couldn't be happier. Please give this diet a try -- you may be amazed! It's a bit more work for me when shopping or cooking, but my life is so much easier in every other way because I'm not dealing with a raging kid all the time. He and his little sister (who's 3 and is also on the diet now; she doesn't seem as sensitive as he is, but she definitely benefits also) now play nicely most of the time, freeing up hours of my day. I truly believe that the question is NOT "Will this help my child?" ... the question is "How much will this help my child?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
Everyone is different.I only know myself, so I will share my story and you can take it for what it's worth.I battled with some level of anxiety for many years, through most of my early 20's, I suppose, maybe earlier too.Around the age of 25 I started to have some agoraphobic behaviors, wanting to get away when in social situations, having trouble getting in a car when someone else was driving, etc.; I started to avoid going out with my friends. My symptoms and behaviors slowly worsened, but not to the point that they became debillitating.Shortly after my 28th birthday I decided to return to graduate school after having been away from acedemia for 6 years. My first three months back at school were extremely stressful, extremely stressful.I was trying to balance my school work with starting research, on top of that I was teaching (which was insanity for me considering my fear of public speaking), trying to make friends and keep my marriage together.Towards Christmas I started to suffer from daily headaches.Around November I had my first full blown panic attack.I didn't know what was happening, I thought I was dying. Most of you know what I'm talking about.I made it to Christmas, and returned home to visit my parents.I thought the time away from school would allow me to recover, but the opposite happened. That two weeks was the most difficult two weeks of my life.I was in a constant cycle of panic. Each morning I would wake up and bolt upright in bed, immediately the fear and adrenaline would start, I'd wonder if I'd ever be able to take care of myself, wonder what my relatives and friends must think, I'd shake and have heart palpitations, the clock ticking would crash through my head like a bass drum, I'd sweat and have diarrhea, I couldn't eat or sleep or be around people, I feared time alone with my thoughts.I thought I had gone crazy, lost it, that's how I'd spend the rest of my days. This went on for two weeks. Two weeks does not sound like a long time, but I would compare that mental anguish to the most severe physical pain you can imagine.I won't paint any graphic imagery because if you're reading this then you probably know what I'm talking about. It was the most intense pain that I have ever endured.I was SURE I could not return to graduate school.I thought I might need to be put in an asylum.Somehow a friend got word of my condition and offered me this book.Just reading the first chapter made me feel so much better.I tell you in all honesty, this book changed my life.It took a lot of work and a lot of time and then more work, but I turned my feelings completely around.I am more self-confident now, two years later, than I have ever been in my life.I have not had a panic attack in perhaps 18 months.I KNOW that I am in control.Again, the change was not instantaneous; I had relief from some of the acute symptoms fairly quickly, within days or weeks, but it took several months for me to stop having panic attacks on a daily basis.Given the title of the book, it sounds cliched for me to say this, but I truly have taken all of my negative attributes that started my panic cycle in the first place and turned them around so that they help me succeed.I am realizing dreams that I never thought possible.Somewhere in the book Lucinda says that she's happy she went through her panic/anxiety disorder because it has made her a stronger person than she would have ever been.I remember reading that the first time and thinking what a load of crap that was.But now I feel the same way.Few things in my life have so defined and limited me as my panic and anxiety, and now that I'm in control of my feelings, nothing could be more powerful.Good luck.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed in the "general" advice
This may only be my opinion, but I've gone to therapy in the past so I feel I can compare this book with what would be discussed in a professional office.
1-0 out of 5 stars If you are Clinically Depressed - you may want to STAY AWAY
While I'm sure Lucinda has found a niche with this book and helped others, I would warn those in a deep depression or those struggling with severe anxiety to pass this by.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ilyanla Live!: Self Value, Self worth & Self Love
I enjoy watching Iyanla on TV, and I have read a couple of her books, this was the first time I purchased one of her tapes and was very disappointed. The sound quality is poor.I found myself turning the volume up and then down, and then at times I couldn't hear anything at all.It started out with singing, which I guess is alright if that is what you had expected, but I didn't see the connection in the overly long singing introduction to the tape subject. She had a few good points that she brought out, and made one think. There were maybe 20 min. of interesting subject matter to listen to: I would not recommend this particular tape.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am a huge Iyanla fan, but even she has a bad day. This tape was a disappointment, expecially after being fired up with the "Faith" tape. The quality of the sound was not good, her singers were not on their game and the message seemed to come in the last 5 minutes of the tape. You found Iyanla rambling on and on mostly.I will still try the other cassettes but this one, you can pass on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remember to Love Your Feet
Iyanla takes us on a journey of the past and present on this cd.You willfind yourself in Rhonda ( the story she is telling throughout the lesson). You will step outside of your inner being and take a hard look within.Youwill come to know something that you have learned for years but never paidthat much attention to - "that you are made in the image of God." I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but you will learn to love yourfeet, your face, your private parts etc...Purchase this, and I promiseyou will finish it enlightened. Now hug yourself and tell yourselfRead more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mind opener
I am a father of two boys and I came across this book by searching on Amazon for books that could help me improve my parenting skills. I love my boys and I consider my parenting as a full time job. I read other readers comments and I did some research before I purchased a couple of books, Raising Cain being one of them. My main motivation in buying these books is derived from the frustration that I experience when I know I fail to understand my son on some issues and also from my worry that I do not understand what is going on in a life of a young man in today's world.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent insight
I appreciated the insight in this book and have recommended it to everyone I know, and most importantly to the women in my life so they can understand me a little better when I do that male "thing" that confounds them so.As others have done I also read Reviving Ophelia and I would recommend these two books be read in tandem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents/caregivers
This book provides a fascinating insight into the emotional development of boys.I am only on Chapter 4 of the book and already it has provided answers to some fundamental, why-does-he-do-that questions that I've had about my son.It should be required reading for teachers and administrators.I definitely recommend this book to any parent of young boys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING AND SPIRITUAL
In this series, Dyer's focuses on the power of manifesting what you desire. To him, there's a lot of truth that if you ask and believe in something you shall get it.Of course, this goes against the logic of the age but some things can't be quantified, can they?

2-0 out of 5 stars find another book
Makes a few accurate observations about boy behavior and its origins, however, the book leans a little too much toward "feminization" of boys in preventing behavioral problems. This may be the politically-correct way to help boys, but not the productive way.The book is also on the new york times best-seller list, this is significant, because that publication is notorious for being the most anti-male biased newspaper in the united states.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you raising boys today?
If you are raising boys today I suggest reading this book before they enter the school system! Is he in school and saying things like, "that's gay" or "fag"? Sure he is, we raise them that way and don't even know it.
3-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to read the whole thing
The author makes some fantastic points in the first hundred or so pages in this book.He then makes those points over and over again until they have lost all meaning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book of Persuasion
The Psychology of Persuasion is a fun read. It is written so that you can be more influential with your kids, your boss or your business dealings.Another very nice benefit of this book is the subject of collecting intelligence.I promise if you buy this book you will never see people the same. You will really understand how they think, how they decide things and how they buy. It's not boring mumbo jumbo like a college text. It's readable for real people.I got so many ideas between the book and the presentation that I'll be working a long time and making even more money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is an easy to read book, as any other book it uses many examples to understand the objectives. Something unique about this book is that it uses exercises; this is great for people who learn by repetition or practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golden Nuggets
Often I have a difficult time remembering various techniques that I read about in my pursuit of knowledge. This book gives such useful information, that I felt compelled to make index cards illustrating the concepts. I carry one index card with me each day as I attempt in incorporate that day's golden nugget into my life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Topic - Terrible Presenation
Well, I just had to try another Dr. Phil book, since it has been a number of years since I read Life Strategies. To be honest, even though he can be a polarizing figure, I have nothing against him. I think his TV is a source of help and inspiration for thousands of people.
4-0 out of 5 stars Getting There
Haven't finished the book yet because unlike almost every other self-help book I've ever seen, this one requires a lot of hard work -- and that's the only way to get results.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Phil...
This book was an interesting read; I enjoyed hearing all of Dr. Phil's amusing personal stories. I guess this book could be helpful if one actually had the motivation to get through all of the exercises. However, discomforting is the fact that most of the concepts in this book, actually every concept in this book, is largely stolen from other prominent psychologists such as Maslow and Erikson. There is no credit cited for any source used in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Different View of Enlightenment
Anyone on the path of enlightenment should add this course to their studies. It can be daunting at first to understand where Stephen is going with this technique. But as the listener continues on this tutorial, the stories he shares can be enjoyed while gathering information during his discourse for use in the normal meditation disciplines.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good.
I don't know how many times I can listen to this guy ask "If you don't use your thoughts, memories, emotions, associations, or perceptions, how do you experience X". I don't know what this question is supposed to do for you or why he thinks that asking it over and over for different experiences does anything for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving from Chronos to Kairos Time
From the back of the audiotapes:
4-0 out of 5 stars A Myssian look at our spiritual journey
Carolyn Myss fills six audio cassetts with witty conversation in dialogue with a live audience. Her objective is to show us a way to think about our spiritual journey by using Jungian archetypes as they appear in our "sacred contract." This helps us define and understand our heroic journey into consciousness on a symbolic level. Our goal is to discover our "charism," a Greek word used in the Catholic catechism meaning "special or unique grace." Dr. Myss implies that we each are given a special or unique grace by God (or perhaps the Holy Spirit). We incarnate with a "sacred contract" which tests who we are as we proceed in search of this charism. Our task in life as we choose to become conscious is to learn particular lessons which are delineated in our sacred contract. We have choice points along the way. If we do not choose to learn the lesson in our contract through acquiescence to our surrender points then we must forever keep meeting up with the same archetypes (i.e., universal life patterns) until we make the choices which allow us to learn the lesson and thus to move to higher levels of consciousness and understanding (i.e., our minds are transformed so they serve the spirit [our higher self] as we liberate ourselves from the tyranny of our tribal mind). Our journey helps us refine our charism which in turn refines us so we may continue to refine our charism to give something of value back to the world before we go home (i.e., place of origin of our soul). Dr. Myss illustrates her ideas using a Jungian archetypal approach to the telling and analysis of Dorothy in the Wizzard of Oz and Annie Sullivan's young blind and deaf charge. Dr. Myss focusses on the "universal" archetypes of child (orphan), prostitute, victim, and saboteur. The tapes are fun to listen to. The material is complex and deserves several sessions of listening and relistening for maximum understanding. A novice will find the material confusing as Dr. Myss's verbal style is circular and integrated rather than linear.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many distractions
The information in these tapes is very valuable and as usual, Dr. Myssdelivers her lecture with great depth and humor.Unfortunately, due tosome unexplained shenanigens on the sidelines with a woman named Robin,Myss is quite distracted through the first 3 tapes. It appears that Robinis doing something to make the audience laugh and Dr. Myss keeps having toask her to stop.I found this extremely irritating and distracting and Iwas very surprised that with all the lectures Myss delivers each year, theywould decide to release tapes with this kind of thing taking up so muchspace. If you want some good tapes, try her lecture on The Fundamentals ofSpiritual Alchemy. It is much better (I am a big fan and have many of hertapes) and there are no irritating distractions. Also on the archetypestapes, Dr. Myss spends a great deal of time writing out diagrams which shedoes not explain for the benefit of her listening audience. The lectureitself is good if you have the patience to sift through all of the otherparts that weren't well thought out or executed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Find out what type of person you are when confronted with change.
This book can identify to all categories of people and how they react to change.I think at some point I have played all roles when someone has moved my cheese.I think I should read this book on an annual basis to remind myself of which mouse I would like to be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Confrontational, enlightening but too simple
This book uses two mice and two little people who look like mice to make a serious point. How do you respond to change? In Who Moved My Cheese?, we see those who immediately seek a new viable option, those who move forward only when a situation is life threatening, and those who refuse to budge.Isn't this what we see in everyday life?My biggest concern about this book is that the question provided to deal with the fear that stops us from moving forward is "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" This is an example of repressive coping, and does not deal with the reason for the fear, and does not resolve the fear.To learn how to best deal with troublesome feelings that stop us from making the most of our lives,I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self.I recommend each of these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good slap in the face!
This book is an excellent quick read for everyone. The analogies utilized remind people how to properly, and improperly deal with change and are superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. The author gently helps you pin-point your problem areas and sensitively points you in the right direction (to God). I loved the idea of imagining your mind as a control center and identifying who was really at the controls, then working to put God and you back into the control seat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather weak and superficial
I am surprised by the high ratings of the previous reports, for I found the book to be very superficial. The main point of the book is that authenticity means to take control of your decisions, but it does notprovide any real help about how to achieve this goal. The discussion isvery naive and useless if you really have a problem. It may be of some useif you a strongbeliever, since the author builds a lot on christianvalues.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on learning how to respect/honor self
Neil Clark Warren makes visible the importance of being truthful, not only to ourselves about ourselves, but to be truthful about ourselves to others; only then can we obtain the inner peace and contentment we so desperatelyseek. Within the pages of this book, you will examine your life and learnhow to change the patterns that keep you from the happiness you diserve.Others authors I have read that speak of living an authentic life are Rev.Wayne Muller "How, Then, Shall We Live? and Neale Donald Walsh"Conversations with God Book II". ... After witnessing the recent horror (school massacre) inflicted upon the Amish community, "Everyday Sacred" is a timely reminder that they and the human spirit will endure. It reminds us to ask not what we lack, but to appreciate, daily, what we already have.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Cure for the unnamed Problem
It's a great description of the Spritual Cure.... but we never analyze what was wrong in the first place... it's a type of Narcissism which in her case comes into conflict with her religious values and forced her to develop her spritual walk as a cure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
This book fell into my lap at a time when I was "most ready" to hear it, so my review may be tainted. It was so inspirational to me, and I absolutely loved the analogies and word pictures that Sue Bender used.I refer to those illustrations in my mind nearly every day.I use this book as my nightstand "go to book" when I need a spiritual pick-me-up.It is beautiful, articulate, and powerful.I have sent copies to nearly everyone I know because I believe anyone and everyone, no matter what your spiritual beliefs are, can benefit from Ms Bender's eloquent writing. ...
