Editorial Review

Houston televangelist Joel Osteen is well qualified to write this book, having used the seven principles he shares to achieve his own "rags-to-riches" story. At the heart of Osteen’s message is that achieving a successful, prosperous life of fulfillment can only occur when we stop worrying about the past or future to make the most of each present moment by using our God-given strengths and talents to achieve our goals. The key to doing so are the seven steps Osteen outlines: Enlarge Your Vision, Develop a Healthy Self-Image, Discover the Power of Your Thoughts and Words, Let go of the Past, Find Strength Through Adversity, Live to Give, and Choose to Be Happy. Mixing biblical teachings with his own personal experiences, Osteen explains each of these seven steps in an encouraging, optimistic manner that makes them accessible to anyone interested in principles of personal growth. Although written with a Christian slant, the seven steps Osteen shares will have value to anyone wanting to know more about practical steps of self-betterment, regardless of their denomination.--Read more

This is a great book and you can learn so much from it. Mr. Osteen talks about being focused on the future and not staying and dwelling in the past. You can't look ahead if you continue to look behind you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Life is to live...
I think deep thinking people tend to be unhappy because they're not living life. They're idealizing and rationalizing life. Some of the concepts here may be good, but reading this book will leave you feeling empty, even if you agree. It's better to spend the time living your life than reading these kinds of deep books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give this book as a present for anyone you care about
The more you read this book and go deeper into the principles of Covey the more you discover yourself and others. For many people reading Covey's book or listening to him speak literally changes their lives. This is a powerful and effective recipe for success indeed and highly recommended for people in training.
5-0 out of 5 stars All Time Classic
This book is an exceptionally well thought, intellectual work. I admire Mr. Covey for his in-depth analysis of human relationships and the new concepts he introduced like emotional bank account, paradigm shift, and writing a family mission statement. I truly believe that it is extremely important for everyone to read this book. ... Read more

If you follow this program, you will pass the NCE exam.I used it for 3 weeks prior to taking the exam, and I passed with flying colors.Just listen to one audio CD each day and read the corresponding questions in the Encylopedia of Counseling. You won't need luck.Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Dale Carnegie is one of the authors I have admired for so long. There are numerous reasons why this book is a classic one. He deeply believes that in every person there is good and you can approach it. Of course, there are many negative people who don't like this book because they see everything in black and white. Carnegie on the other side advocates a really delicate, positive and humane approach to everyone around you. It comes very close to "treat the others as you want them to treat you". I am sure that if everyone read and apply the principles in this wonderful book, the world will be a better place. I am sure that you will be pleased as well with his talent to really understand what drives people. Some of the key and basic motivators he discussed are sex and being important. His viewpoint is very close to the one of the bestselling author of scientfically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex. After all genius things are usually simple. Carnegie explores the human nature and common hot buttons together with the reader and gives you tools to manage and push them at your will with the help of numerous examples. I liked that the book is practical, easy and fun to read, and most of all that it delivers great value. I can not say the same for many other books. Definitely get a copy especially if you are a "good" person and prefer to treat people with respect and dignity.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only...
If everyone in the world read this book just once, it would be such a more enjoyable place to live in...

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic of Self Help Genre
This book may be the one that Created the genre. And what was true then is just as true today. One of the loveliest parts about this book are the stories and anecdotes from the time when it was written. It was a simpler time back then. And the people faced such different dilemas than we do today.Yet, the more things change, the more things stay the same. The humanity of this books comes through loud and clear. ... I always learn from Marianne's words and once again she delivers a message on self-acceptance and love in simplistic terms. She combines humor and personal stories that anyone will relate to. No one else compares in relating the message of A Course in Miracles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Demonic? I think not!
I read this book. It's helped me understand my purpose and that we're not all here for the same reason. 4-0 out of 5 stars Keep an open mind...
Actually, I am in the process of listening to this book on tape and am getting a really good vibe from the actual author as she reads. She definately says "take what you can and leave the rest behind.Unfortunately, conservative Christians come off as "holier than thou" and bascially to me their concepts of the Bible detaches from everyday life. What good is a religion in my opinion if it doesn't teach you how to be a better human being. As far as the Bible goes, there has been edits made by those in position to do so to disempower the people for their own selfish means.Sylvia goes into this in speaking of reincarnation as an example of the corruptness of religious authoritarians.Remember slavery was deem appropriate by so called Christians at one time. However, Christianity isn't the disease, but those who interpret and misuse its teachings are the culprit of evil and that goes for any religious belief. I believe we have so much to learn about ourselves, life, the afterlife and the basic truth of all existence and to think there is only one way of thinking hinders us as human beings and our awarness of the eternity of life. When our beliefs limits our thinking or actions how great is that, I ask?I say stop preaching damnation and the wrath of God, and show by example the power of what it means to truly human and to love your fellow person. ... When I read "Crucial Conversations" I found myself tearing through it in long spurts, driven by an intense interest in the authors' discussion of how we handle those tough circumstances life throws our way. It makes the case that we all need to understand our style for handling the inevitable duress of a difficult conversation, and they complement theories with excellent, actionable strategies that work well in the real world.

5-0 out of 5 stars a true eye opener for personal safety
I think what I took away from reading this book was really a lesson in personal safety. I found myself really paying attention to everything going on around me and walking a little bit taller. This isn't for everyone but I found it a critical read living and working in the city at night. I actually was able to identify a bad scene unfolding in front of me and got my feet moving to avoid it. John Douglas presents the facts in a non-alarmist way while still putting great emphasis on what bad dudes are all about. This is a must read for anyone in law enforcement and anyone who likes to gain power through knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good insights into human nature
This was a very interesting book describing the rise of criminal profiling in the F.B.I.John Douglas pioneered the combination of psychology and crimaal catching which has become so popular today, especially since Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs, which showed the public how this new science works (in an exaggerated form, of course). This book details how that science developed, what it's benefits are, and why it should be used, but unfortunately Mr. Douglas doesn't really tell us a whole lot about how exactly it works. He looks at case files, examines autopsy reports, then comes up with a profile of the killer. All of the cases he records in this book are cases he got right (one wonders how many he has gotten wrong, since he mentions having done hundreds and hundreds of cases, and he only mentions a few dozen), yet he never really bridges the gap between case file analysis and criminal profiling.Perhaps he doesn't want us to know, so that criminals cannot use that information to their advantage. If so, he should have explained himself, as the books cover and intro are rather misleading.
3-0 out of 5 stars I CONFESS! I READ THIS BOOK!
Hey, I am not looking for a plea bargain here. I plead guilty to reading Mindhunter by John Douglas.

Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest.Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing.Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly.Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being. ... We're constantly negotiating in our lives, whether it's convincing the kids to do their homework or settling million-dollar lawsuits. For those who need help winning these battles, Roger Fisher has developed a simple and straightforward five-step system for how to behave in negotiations. Narrated soothingly by NPR announcer Bob Edwards, Fisher adds the meaty portions of the material with a sense of playfulness. The blend of voices makes this tape easy to listen to, especially the real-life negotiating scenarios, in which negotiating examples are given. This is a must-have tape for every businessperson's car. (Running time: one hour, one cassette) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me sort through a lot of conflicting feelings...
I would definitely reccomment this book to anyone who has been lied to and decieved by a loved one.I read this two weeks after I found out my fiance had been cheating on me for 2 1/2 years.Although I chose to end it, it helped me sort out alot of the chaos in my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars This books tells it like it is!
I was recently dumped by a pathological liar who lied about EVERY aspect of his life.Although it still hurts, I know I'm much better off. This book really clarified for me the "little white lies" compared to the whoppers that can affect everything in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling It Like it is Heals the Hurt, Strengthens the Weak
When your gut is telling you one thing and he is telling you another, the confusion literally weakens your mental powers and makes you doubt yourself. You slow down at work, your creative powers diminish, your lust for life fades and you suffer all the effects of emotional abuse. Betrayal, just one of the types of lying discussed in this book, is one of the most damaging forms of emotional abuse there is.

Edelman shares her own painful story and the stories of many other women who, as children or adults, lost their mothers. She explains the stages of grief and adjustment. She considers the secondary effects that can occur: the girl-child filling the lost mother's role at home for father and younger siblings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother
Motherless Daughters: The Legacy Of Loss by award winning journalist Hope Edelman is an informative and expertly contributive documentation of the psychological and spiritual effects the death of a mother might have on the life and psychological well being of a daughter. Deftly presenting how the absence of a nurturing maternal hand could influence the development of a daughter's self identity, and what might result from the loss of such a role model and source of emotional support, Motherless Daughters tells of why living beyond a mother's final year reminds a daughter of her exquisite separateness; how present-day relationships are defined by past losses; what the "unmothered" woman can do to reclaim her autonomy and restore her connection to the family of the motherline; and how to understand grief as an ongoing journey. Very strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother, Motherless Daughters is to be especially commended or its outstanding presentation of insightful and helpful material for coping with the death of a mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Loss Through Mental Illness and Abandonment
In my work as a therapist, memoir coach, and memoir writer about mother-abandonment, I have found Hope Edelman's research and knowledge a valuable asset in helping my clients and students understand the lifelong effects of mother loss, and the long path to finding the love, and the "mother" within oneself. I was blessed to meet Hope in person recently and to hear her speak. Our subjects are similar--mother loss--and she presents with such compassion her findings about the differences between women who have lost their mothers in death to those whose mothers are alive but are rejecting, uninterested, abandoning, or mentally ill--perhaps many of the above adjectives apply all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars worth its weight in gold
I lost my mom 2 years ago and read this book for the first time shortly after her passing. I refer to it now and then for comfort. The book has been a crutch that got my through the first holidays following my mom's passing when I couldn't be with my family due to geographic distance.

Editorial Review

There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girls Need To Make Peace With Conflict
I found this book, "Odd Girl Out," not only helpful but also cathartic. It answered a lot of current questions I have about raising an adolescent daughter by enabling me to go back and visit my own youth and remind me of my own experiences. This book illustrates how easy it is for mothers raising daughters to live vicariously through them and see how it brings out old fears and insecurities. It was a re-education.
4-0 out of 5 stars Part of the Puzzle, Read It, but Don't Stop Here
You know, this is actually a topic that is near and dear for my heart and it did have a lot of interesting examples and data...but like Fast Girls before it, this reads a lot like someone's research paper and doesn't really delve too far into the history of aggression (in boys or girls) beyond a barest basics that most people probably already know.Simmons also doesn't offer any statistics, she mentions repeatedly that there really isn't any research on this, but I felt like this was just a big book length article that focused on her own personal fascination with the topic and the scope of the book really doesn't go much beyond her own group of interviewees.I was also kind of annoyed by the great deal of repeated information, it's as if in the absence of statistical data to support her theory she just keeps saying the same thing over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dads and Educators ALSO Need to READ This Book!!!
The book opened my eyes into a girls' world I'd never realized existed. A father, I got the book to understand the social dynamics my daughter navigates. It's like a gardner suddenly discovering that flowers have aromas, weeds have deep roots, and roses have thorns.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life Strategies
Life Strategies by Phillip C McGraw is a fine book about how to look at yourself. PCM gives you a realistic feeling about how to protray yourself with no nonsense ideas. He has you approach your important categories in life (ie; personal, professional, relationships, family and spiritual) by applying his ten "Laws of Life."By taking responsibility for your actions and realistically evaluating your strengths and weaknesses you can improve your quality of life. His book is a fine read and useful to anyone who wants to learn more about what is important to help them live better and reach their personal goals.I definitely would recommend this book, because it's ideas are realistic and helped me focus on what is important in my day to day activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.
If you are one of those people who shy away from doing a truly in-depth analysis of why you perpetuate unproductive, dysfunctional behavior, this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you are willing and desire to explore the inner you and examine what motivates your behavior even if the truth is ugly, hateful and makes you want to run and hide, then this book may be helpful to you. My quest for self-improvement led me to read this book and ultimately discover the hidden payoffs for my counterproductive behavior. This book, in addition to Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich", helped me to totally change my thought process and as a result I lost 89 pounds with no gym, trainer or surgery. Nothing but pure motivation propelled me to exercise everyday (at home with videotapes and outside-first walking, then running) and it was therapy for me. I've made a 180 degree turn from the negativity I used to manifest due to my pessimistic viewpoint of life. I've improved 100% body and mind and give the credit to both of the earlier mentioned books and to God, because I also prayed a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great self-help... if you follow through...
Even though this book was written in 1999, I only came across it in 2005, and took my time to read it.It has been very helpful in identifying why I sometimes do what I do, and what I need to change. It is true that one size does not fit all, and that is why this book is written in a "coaching" manner of asking the right questions in the assignments so that we take time to reflect on these questions so as to gain a greater awareness of ourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights into human/cat interactions, beautifully written
This is without doubt one of the best books on animal behavior I have ever read. What Thomas does that others do not (and often cannot) is three-fold:1-0 out of 5 stars The Circus culture
I spend a lot of time in India and am very knowledgeable about tigers. I was absolutely amazed to read that Ms Thomas thought it perfectly acceptable for tigers to be kept in tiny cages, and dragged around America only to emerge in a circus ring and then be put back in a cage. Ms Thomas seems to think this a wonderful life guaranteed to keep tigers alert and happy, and reccomends the practice continue. She even sings the praises of John Cuneo who breeds tigers for circuses in the US and is currently being prosecuted for animal cruelty.1-0 out of 5 stars Skip it

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
Marianne Williamson cuts through the chase and brings to light, in vivid details, how a real blessed relationship should be, giving tips on dating and the horrors involved in that area. She also conveys a spiritual message of how to deal with depression, making one feel not so alone with darkness. I love her humor and savvy tips on men. 5 stars to you Marianne, with much love and respect.

2-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I give it 2 and not 1 star is because of some good information. She tells us to fall in love with Universe. Because of this and other similar comments I give it 2. I do recommend that you listen to this. She has a lot of good, and helpful information that will help you see things from a different side of problems & relationships. don't accept everything she tells you, but some of the information will open your eyes on dealing with problems and relationships. And even if you're not in one at the moment, you still need to hear this. This is a must for all who is in a relationship or thinking to enter one. 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem!
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest.Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing.Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly.Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best and Most Basic
This will not be a formal review.I found myself with the link available to write one, however, and just could not refrain from making a short stab at it.This set of tapes contains wisdom not just for couples but for anyone, at any time.A comprehensive base of spiritual wisdom drawn from world religions and and the best of thought is condensed into this perspective. Moreover, the suggestions that follow from it are practical and workable. How I wish I had discovered this set of tapes sooner! How I wish it were in hard copy.If you are in need of help, go here. The opening message by Stephen (both he and his wife are conducting the workshop from which the tapes were made) put me off a bit at first, with its quality of incantation.I realize now that this was likely the leading of an opening meditation.Continue.You will not be disappointed!
