Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements
I know there has been a lot of criticism to this book since many say that Lyle has ties to Usana. If Lyle wants to sell his book, why would he put in the book that he works with Usana, Douglas Laboratories, Life Extensions Foundations and Source Naturals, knowing that there are people who are going to think differently after reading the book. If Lyle was interested in the money of selling the book, he wouldn't have written that information in there. Plus, if Usana or Douglas Laboratories was paying Lyle money to put their products as top of the line, why would he say he works with them? Wouldn't that cause a problem with trusting the book in general?I think he wrote it down because he takes pride in the companies he works with. This is just my opinion.There is this document posted by Melaleuca called, "Getting to the bottom of the Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements."Melaleuca critiques the book on six pages.Anyone who has questions about the blending standards, or about the book in general should read it.

Great information...
This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins.I had a hard time putting the book down.I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using.Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.

Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be
If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals.But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.

Best Book on Vitamins for a Healtier Life-The Proto-Wicca Herbal Primer
This paperback is filled with so many great vitamin facts.It's still the best book on utilizing vitamins and herbs ,for optimum daily health.Calling it the 'Vitamin Bible',was a bold and well-justified title.Nicholaus Culpepper compiled a massive tome on herbs,some three centuries eariler.Culpepper realized the benefits of using the herbs of our earth.He also realized the self-empowerment ,of fellow humans connecting with our natural world.He printed biblical passages inside,to leasen the concerns over any 'earth-magick', being revealed in his magnum opus.I think there are alot of neo-pagans out-there,who first used this book as a herbal primer .The original 'Vitamin Bible' was published in 1979.It's funny because many of the old hippies turned born-again christians reached-out to this book for 'healing wisdom'.It rode the high-tide,along side of the 'Dianetics-Scientology' books. It's still a great reference, for anyone looking for an introduction on herbs and vitamins,and a reawakening for all Western-world people.

Excellent Guide for Health
I bought this book last week and it's excellent value for money.It has all the information about vitamins and herbs; it gives recommendations as well as warnings; advice about specific ailments, and so much more.I was surprised at the depth of information given.For example, my doctor told me that the herb known as horsetail helped halt osteoporosis when taken along with calcium.He also recommended boron.Nowhere else have I found confirmation of that information but this book mentions both. Unfortunately, you will not find horsetail listed in the index.That is the only complaint I have about the book that, occasionally, just occasionally, something was not listed in the index that was referred to in the text.If you care about your health, I recommend it.It's a no-nonsense book.

Out of Date?
This five year old PDR Family Guide to Nutritional Supplements, first edition, Dec. 2001, is an excellent consise book and easy to read. However it is out of date when compared with PDR Health on-line. To get started this book is good. To get the latest information from PDR one has to go on-line and combining the two can be confusing. I'll not order until the second edition is released.

I use it in my healing practice, and nursing practice
Note:First of all, there are 2 natural remedy PDRs, one for Nutritional rRemedies and Supplements, and another specifically for Herbal Remedies.You will NOT find herbal info in the nutritional PDR, nor nutritional supplements in the Herbal PDR.

Great book
I love this book. Lots of great info.
The ONLYreference you will every need!
Simply put, I have used this incredibly thorough book like a health and nutritional "bible". I have studied nutrition and supplements and have found the information presented to be accurate, concise, easy to understand and it covers virtually every topic imaginable. If you have any health concerns, it offers sound natural advice as well as supplemental information, pros and cons and warnings as well (which many books fail to deliver). You will not be disappointed. I would highly recommend this for every family library!

A Must Have For Any Supplement/Altern. Medicine Aficionado!

Outdated and Useless
A lot of the percursors mentioned in this book, namely androstenedione, are no longer legally available in the U.S.

I tested prior to takingandro and after!!!!!
The advice given is worth listening to. I did. I am 58 and tested prior to the use of Androstenedione and after, The results were great. I was at the lowest level of testosterone to start and after 6 months of 50mg of Ando per day, It was raised the middle level, Just where I wanted to be. L-Glutamine and Creatine are other supplements to be considered for older men, When used in correct doses and exercise bring good results. I have more studies on my website. Roger Mason, a Scientist has other good books on Amazon check them out.

Super Book on Super T
This is an excellent presentation, aimed at a lay audience, for the role of testosterone replacement and supplementation for male and female health. The author clearly knows the field backwards and forwards, and presents a balance view on each supplement and approach discussed. I also thoroughly agree with his view on weight training, which can be summed up in a question one posed to Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ah-nold's answer: "Am I too old to train with weight?" Important Information About Treatment for Heart Disease
The book logically presents information suggesting that there is a simple preventative treatment for heart disease.The author writes to the lay person, explaining the lack of information supporting the status quo - the supposedly heart-healthy low fat diet - and supporting his homocysteine hypothesis.The only short-coming of the book is in the final chapters, where the author over reaches the information presented and suggests control of homocysteine levels may be a cure all for a wide variety of conditions, including alzheimers and cancer.

I just received my book and have yet to read more than 30 pages.So far, I find the material interesting and the arguments convincing.More than anything, I wanted to comment on the review by "a reader"...and his or her suggestion that readers would be better off skipping the book and instead seek established medical advice.Just go to quackwatch.com, well known debunker of less than scientific studies and bogus health and nutrition theories, and read how much credence they give to the same ideas espoused in this book.I would add, who better to present the medical evidence than McCully himself, who in 1969, first described the vascular pathology [of heart disease] as it relates to homocysteine levels?

Not Worth The Money
This book does a disservice for those who really want helpful information about diet.. Dr. McCully did not do himself any favors by allowing his daughter, Martha, a Fashion Magazine Beauty writer to co-author it.. just very badly written.. and it undermines his medical crediblity..Read more

Fascinating read for holistic medicine followers

A Must Read Book
This is such a practical book and very helpful in the "where do I go if I have cancer" question.It gives you hope that cancer does not have to be a death bed. You do have alternatives to radiation and chemo. A must read book

Getting tired of the "why" question...
As an "alternative" practitioner, it sure does get tedious to hear the question, "If it worked so well, then why isn't it all over the news and talked about by every M.D. and cancer researcher?"With the answer often being, "because it works too well and no real money can be made from it", most people grapple with the implications and ultimately write it off as some crazy conspiracy theory.This is the saddest, most frustrating, and even ridiculous type of road block to encounter when attempting to educate and help very ill people.It ultimately reveals the extent to which we've all been programmed (and I don't use that term lightly here).If you don't like the word "conspiracy", then use another, but it doesn't change the fact that a small group of greedy, powerful people are keeping vital health info from the rest of us for a variety of self-serving reasons.

For each ailment, (acne, depression etc), it provides a list of vitamins that can help solve that ailment. In the second half it lists each vitamin and the amount to take. It's a great way to figure out what supplements can help you, how much to take, and what to look for when shopping for the supplements. It's a wonderful reference book.

Repetitive, un-referenced and narrow-minded
As a well-read reviewer on this subject, perhaps I am being overcritical.However, I found his testimony throughout the book that the only purpose of antioxidant consumption is to desotry fre radicals to be missing the point of good nutrition.He tries to extrapolate all benficial qualities of antioxidant rich food to their free radical scavenging abilities, which he does not back up with valid scientific sources.He neglects the vast epidemiological studies attributing better health from of consumption of antioxidant-rich foods because of their high fiber, unsaturdated fats, and low cholesterol. A phenomenal book on adjuvants in cancer therapy that is both conservative and very thorough
For a few decades a few scientists, some of them Nobel laureates, have believed that antioxidants may prevent and even help to treat cancer.Some of the ideas and clinical results have been very promising, but have not received the attention they deserve.Even worse, unsubstantiated and even false claims have been bandied about by some of those who claim to know everything about the antioxidants, which makes anyone who touches the subject appear to be disreputable.
Useful information for co-doctoring
All cancer patients must co-doctor if they are going to survive.Most cancer doctors will warn against the harmful effects of taking antioxidants with chemotherapy or radiation treatments.This book completely debunks that medical school dogma.
Must read for anybody with cancer
This book provides concise information regarding nutritional supplements that are effective in fighting cancer. Advertised as New but was used
This is not a review but a critique. The book was advertised as new and I paid the "new" price, but it was used. There were several pages with penciled-in answers. The book itself is Murray's usual fine work.

Incomplete and full of inconsistencies
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions.For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine."Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine." Breakthrough Information
This book truly made a great impact in my life. My husband and I are glad that we are taking the right path to a healthy lifestyle after reading Dr. Packer's book. We have been taking supplements that contains the optimum amount of antioxidants mentioned by Dr. Packer especially lipoic acid. Our health greatly improvedmost specially my husband who is alreadya candidate for diabetes.
THE ANTIOXIDANT BIBLE
This book is all you need, if you want to know the importance of antioxidants. It clearly explains the four most important ones, after you've read this, you will always take them for the rest of your life. PERFECT
Book was written by a true professional. I like books that repeats itself a little bit in each chapter. This is how a true journalist writes a book. It is very important to go over in each chapter a little bit of what what taught in the previous chapter, this is called repetive learning and the learning will stick with you longer. Very good written book.

stupid book and waste of money
Ok, Cichoke is not wrong. But here is the BIG problem. He repeats himself constantly. He cuts and pastes the same exact phrases over and over and over again on almost every page. The sloppiness and pure laziness of this book defy the mind. It is immoral to say so little and repeat it so often to make a book look big and fat. This entire book could have been written in about 20 pages. If I had seen this book before I would never have bought it. Buy any other book on enzymes. There is a caveat, if you can not remember what you have read as you turn from one page to another, then you will love this book. Every page is a near repeat of the page before. On the plus side, the info is accurate. I am not accusing him of being wrong. An additional problem is his zealous plugging for specific brands of enzymes, for no reason. Does he own stock? Lazy author, not much info, repetitious. Makes all health enthusiasts look like opportunists. SHAME!

Excellent Encyclopedia of Enzymes!
Dr. Cichoke does a great job of giving the basics of enzyme therapy, that is the therapeutic value of increasing the enzyme content of your diet. The book covers enzymes in natural foods, such as amylases (starch digesters) in beet juice, as well as powerful enteric-coated enzyme pills, such as Wobe Mugos. The book is divided into multiple sections. The first 88 pages are an introductory course in enzyme types (such as amylase, lipase, pancreatin, papain, etc), the function of enzymes, as well as an encyclopedia of "enzyme helpers" such as vitamins, etc, and their individual benefits. In fact, the information is extremely useful even for those not interested in enzyme therapy, particularly the tables listing various phytochemicals and their uses.Read more

Gormley does it again!
I was impressed enough when Gormley came out a landmark book on DHA in 1999, but was equally impressed when he came out with this book, the most-concise, best-researched, most practical and powerful consumer book on brain-boosting I have ever read--and there are a number out at this point. Bravo!

Incomplete
For a 270 page book that focuses on only one subject, "The Homocysteine Revolution" should have included much more iformation on what a person should DO in order to have favorable Homocysteine levels -- especially when it comes to diet and other lifestyle habits.
status quo is a death sentence
Excellent exposition of a revolution in medical science that will eventually save millions of lives.Besides, even if he is only half-rght, how tough can it be to take a few vitamins, eat your vegetables, cut down on donuts and doritos, and take a walk (preferably uphill) once in a while?Moreover, it is also an excellent and clear example of the entrenched members of a group suppressing an idea that would take away their income derived from maintaining current orthodoxy.This has always been true and always will be true.Why?After all, if you had attended college and graduate school and trained for 5 or more years beyond that, and accumulated $200k+ in debt to become qualified to perform open heart surgery (or pick whatever profession or skill you like), and to be elevated into a position of seeming god-like powers, and to be worshipped by the multitudes, and to hear the exalted "Doctor" pronounced before your name (egos please stand up!) and then someone came along with a new theory that said your patient could take 10 cents worth of vitamins every day and avoid your surgical specialty, don't you think you'd be a little resistant too?It is easy to say, well they have no integrity.
