5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to Help Us Decode Our Emotional Garbage
After reading The Four Agreements, I felt that it is great to learn the four agreements V be impeccable with your word, dont take anything personally, dont make assumptions and always try your best. However, that book did not have enough practical ideas or skills to guide me decode our old agreements/emotional garbage, how to be aware and how to transform. This book has a practical guide to teach us how to live in the four agreements. It teaches us how to become aware and how to transform.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
Anyone who has read his first book will definitely want to read this one as well. This book actually helps the reader to implement the Four Agreements into daily life.Very insightful and I wish I had read it forty years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grounding Clarity, Simple Truth
This is an excellent book for anyone. Don Miguel shares a heartfelt vision of very fundemental and useful truths in a very practical way that is easy to understand and follow. His work also goes beyond the new-age people, and far beyond the pop-psych books, because he is the real deal. His connection with the indigenous traditions of his people gives his expressions an uncommon sincerity and authenticity. I guarantee it will help you, should you allow it. ... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad Motivational/Inspirational Book
I can't help but wonder who the target audience is/was intended for this book.At times it read very smoothly; other times I felt like it was written in an uncreative/predictable manner. It made a lot of good points; I valued a lot of the lessons and advice.I just felt like the whole story about David, the presence of his sister's spirit, etc could have been left out and it would have been just as good.I learned quite a bit; I just wasn't awed.I think there are better motivational books out there besides Wokini.

5-0 out of 5 stars logical, practical, enjoyable, and readable
When my grandmother died I had to go through her things, and I found not one but two copies of this book. Out of curiosity I read it, and was very moved and at the same time felt enlightened. I really wish that I couldtalk to her about this story, and regret that I didn't know her wellenough, because anyone who appreciates this story is on the right path asfar as I'm concerned. I am a Christian and I am not Native American, butthose things really don't matter as the only thing you need to have whenreading this is your desire to search, to learn more of yourself and theworld. You will get out of this book much more than you spend on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fate Has Led Me to This Story Once Again
By chance, I found this book in my local library, read it and had a life change.Today while looking up Nicholas Sparks I find that Wokini is in print once again. Life is good! This book will change your whole attitudeand outlook on life.It begins by breaking down the old ideas (lies) aboutwhat happiness is and is not.It follows with a day by day path on how toachieve true happiness. A great book to give and to keep! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Native American Paths to Healing
Eagle Man (Ed McGaa) shares his knowledge of Lakota Sioux spiritual practices as a way to include everyone who wants to heal our world. He calls those who revere Mother Earth and want toensure her continuation, Rainbow People. He writes in an intimate way, as if talking with friends. He describes the meaning of the various rituals and myths and shares helpful information about how non-Native people may or may not participate. In addition to his personal journey and the sacred practices, he details techniques for building a sweat lodge, making a peace pipe and more. A fascinating book which has earned a place in my personal library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mother Earth Spirituality : Native American Paths to Healing Ourselves and Our World (Religion and Spirituality)
Easy to read and understand. Very "down to earth". A guide book to preparing the necessary items and tools of the Native culture. Very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interested in Native American Spirituality
If you're interested in Native American Spirituality then I would read most all of Eagle Man's books. He provides great insight into the Native American beliefs and customs.Personally I believe his books should be used in high school and colleges to allow others the opportunity to understand our Native American Indian brothers and sisters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Connection, compassion and depth
Plant Spirit Medicine speaks of the elements of nature, the plants, shamanism, and healing. Cowan's integrity, wisdom and humor is apparent throughout. I first read this book 7 years ago. It changed my life, opening me up to a world where healing, love and compassion are always flowing from the plants and other aspects of nature. This book speaks of one man's journey and opens the doors to allow you to make your own journey and find your own path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awaken your own shamanic capabilities
This book is an accessible, sincere and inspired guide for anyone who is curious about how to recover the human's innate ability to be in communication with the non-human world - which apparently just awaits our intention to do so.Eliot Cowan shares his own fascinating journey of discovery in a way that also offers to the reader ideas for how to do the same. His message is not, "look at me, I have special abilities," but "look into yourself and see what is there just waiting to be revived."The disastrous psychological, ecological and spiritual situation humans find themselves in as a result of having stopped engaging in "the great conversation" with nature, as author Thomas Berry puts it, can begin to heal if we try hard, now, to apply ourselves to the wisdom available in such books as Plant Spirit Medicine. We have a responsibility to read and utilize such information as Eliot Cowan makes available here.--Tayria Ward, Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound Medicine
I've read this book 3 times and plan to read it again. It is clear that Cowan has a love for and a thorough grasp of his subject matter.A must read for anyone intersted in shamanism, herbalism or healing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Source of Insight
"Coyote Medicine" is a tremendous source of insight and experience within the path of shamanism and health. Dr. Mehl-Madrona's story-telling is magnificent and at times very suspenseful hitting directly on our sensitive health and spiritual issues we face culturally. But, he doesn't give you easy answers, because his path to becoming a healer was very complex. For me, this book opened up parts of my consciousness and answered questions I was asking and some of those I hadn't yet asked. This book was truly a God-sendand I am savoring every word I read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading on Holistic Medicine
This book blew me away.I have reread much of it so many times and bought multiple copies for friends.I have filled the margins of my copy with notes and filled notebooks with essays and thoughts inspired by Dr. Mehl-Madrona's book.It is nothing short of miraculous itself, in addition to describing medical miracles and how they are brought about by spiritual intervention and Native American healing.5-0 out of 5 stars Take the risk and make the leap
Coyote has always been a special animal to me, so the title jumped out at me.The two feathers and physician's symbol on the cover present a beautiful balance. The physician's symbol has the twin serpents and the two wings of the one.In the background is the four, the Mystery.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who loves herbs
Ms. Hutchens has put together an amazing collection of herbal uses from the First Nations. This is one book that should be on the bookshelf of every budding herbalist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why can't the editor spell?
This book gets serious stars taken off for unprofessionalism. It's one thing if the author can't spell, but her editor is supposed to catch her errors. This important practice can't hope to be taken seriously if the editor couldn't even spell the title of the book. The correct spelling is "herbology" and means the study of herbs. Geez.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cross-cultural Herbal Guide
Indian Herbalogy of North America by Alma R. Hutchens is a helpful reference book for those desiring a greater understanding of cross-cultural applications of herbs. The title is somewhat misleading because though there is an emphasis on Native American herbalism there is also a great deal of information regarding Russian herbology and folklore. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid credentials but too abstract
--Dr Alvord writes about her journeys as a Native American student and physician. The book seems clearly designed for non-technical readers rather than the professional medical community, and there's little medical jargon. She uses her own difficult pregnancy and the death of a beloved grandmother as case studies in integrating Western medicine and Navajo ideas.5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK
I picked up this book and I could NOT put it down. What a wonderful journey described here....how she interlocks traditional medicine with Navajo, how harmony and positive spirit is such a process in the healing world. You will not be disappointed with this read. I have shared this with all those close to me.Make it part of your list

5-0 out of 5 stars What We All Want in a Doctor
This book was recommended by a friend, and after I read it, I chose it as my selection for my book club.Living in the Southwest, the insight into Native American culture was especially educational.Alvord seems to confirm what so many of us as patients have been saying for years:give us a doctor who will take the time to get to know us on a personal level and treat the whole person.I would recommend this to men and women, young and old alike! What an amazing woman. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book only if you dare to see you as you really are
Michael continues his journey of a Helper in the truest form of "being Cherokee".I am amazed at how simple God our Creator is revealed in our self induced complexity of life.Thank you Michael for helping to remove the scales of our heart and spirit. For those of you who are Christians, I would encourage you to use Michael's book as a help in your journey through the Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I came across this book while exploring my recently discovered Native heritage. It fit the bill perfectly, helping me learn about universal Native traditions, practices, and thinking.I could go on and on, but it's enough to say that this book is well written, informative, and enjoyable.Michael Garrett has a lot to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful teachings!
This is a wonderful book - the lessons, the stories, the exercises, all are superb.Through these different avenues/activities Michael Garrett really conveys not only native american rituals (what, how) but also such deep meaning and connection with mother earth (why). Its a fun book to read, very open and honest style that becomes a real page turner.I love the opening poems to the different chapters that set the stage. Here's the oe for the chapter entitled The Rule of Opposites:"The good road and the road of difficulties; you have made me cross; and where they cross, the place is holy."There are wonderful drawings throughout the book as well. This is definitely one of those books that you read and you think about life in its purest sense. The exercises at the end of each chapter give you good real-world things to do to really understand the teaching.I love it!! Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful book and more powerful message
All of Tom Brown's books are written on many different levels. As a just-starting-out naturalist, I read most of Brown's books with interest, but the deeper I go into the naturalist's world, the more powerful messages I get between the lines. 5-0 out of 5 stars Man's Environmental Holocaust
Dear Sirs,I hope you reconsider your decision not to publish this review. On October 7, 1998, the NY Times reported on the biggest Ozone Hole yet seen.To quote the article: "Government scientists said today that the gap in the planet's ozone over Antartica was greater than the size of North America and was the largest ever observed."In addition, on August 13, 2000, a frontpage article in the Sunday NY Times reported on how a formerly benign fungus which has been found in the US from time immemorial was suddenly killing millions of acres of oak trees in California. The article ends on a puzzling note with scientist unable to explain why this disease had become so virulent. However, it is well known that UV radiation affects plants earlier than Humans and one documented effect of UV radiation is a weakening of the immune system. It is not a far stretch of the imagination to theorize that UV radiation may be responsible for this latest plant die-off.I hope you give these issues consideration.-----------------------------------------------------------------5-0 out of 5 stars A unique culteral view of universal truths.

4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult, but worth the effort.
Michael Taussig takes a stance towards "terrorism" not common in today's world. By trying to trace the roots of this phenomenon, he brings to light many explanations and understandings many of us fail to realize, only because we have not come across them before. I give this book four stars instead of five simply because it is a difficult read, but if you are interested in what we, today, call "terrorism" and are willing to take the time to plunge into this book, then it will certainly be worth your while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taussig takes one on a terrifying, gut churning, horrifying
trip through the rubber boom of the 1800's in South America. From detailed historical survey to his first hand accounts of life around the Amazon, he never ceases to confront the reader with reality. His study iscomprehensive in that he brings attention to all different aspects of theEuropean, Indian and African people who live there. The study helpsintegrate the anthropological view of society to consider the religious, political, economic and moral as part of the collective consciousness of acommunity.Powerful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than a simple ethnographic investigation...
Arguably one of the most accomplished anthropologists working today, Michael Taussig provides an intensely individualistic bricolage of literary, historical, and ethnological interpretations of his many years of fieldwork in the Upper Amazon. One of the most detailed and poignant accounts of shamanism in its cultural context - will very soon be regarded as a classic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Tuscarora dreaming
This book follows Boyd after his meeting the eclectic Tuscarora medicine man and documents their travels across the country, with the aim of promoting inter-religious dialogue and cooperation. It is writtenwell; Boyd managed to captureMad Bear'sculinary and other idiosyncrasies in a way which is genuinely funny and, at the same time, filled with valuable information about modern native medicine. With native Americansinformation rarely comes in an explicit way; likewise, the most valuable stuff in the book is hidden between the lines: the Tuscarora/Iroquois dreaming practices, the practices used to take care of and obtain feedback from nature and the commitment to working together with spiritually aware people from all over the planet.
5-0 out of 5 stars I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Doug Boyd again, as in "Rolling Thunder", has shown us the everyday life of a remarkable man. Thank you Doug for reminding us how it is possible to live the sacred path with gusto.Since we are not all ableto sit at Mad Bear's knee to learn his great wisdom, Doug shows us that thetraditions still exist and are practiced. This is a book that should beread by everyone. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stereotypic internalized racism as projected metaphor
Duran's first book, NA Postcolonial Psychology was a ground breaker. This most recent book offends on many levels. The idea that all native people must return to traditional ways in order to heal makes the assumption that they don't have within them or around them what they need in order to do so without some hierarchical psuedo-shamanist wannabe medicine man with a degree in clinical psychology spoon feeding them. Then, to make matters worse, traditional medicines are taught to be used by 20 years worth of psychology interns without benefit of having walked that path.Leads to multiple generations of psychologists culturally misappropriating traditional ways under the guise of "helping cure" Native people. And what's this bunk about medicine people being the ones to use drugs and alcohol because they have the "power" to do so?Not sure that has anything to do with traditional native american worldview, but may have something to do with some seriously unhealthy practices.Different native people have different practices and understanding of medicine.Making blanket pan-Indian generalizations that smack of new age ideas isn't healing. There's a certain feel of cultural voyeurism that is promoted in this book and it is not recommended.I was a Director of a behavioral health clinic within the urban American Indian population, and am a psychologist. There are many ways to promote healing in communities and among people, and many ways to train cross-culturally, and this is not a book, philosophy or trend I would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transformative Therapy
This new book by Dr. Duran includes case studies of his integrating shamanic healing techniques with traditional Western therapies.Dr. Duran's writing is intelligent, brilliant, and groundbreaking in scope and content.Though the clients he works with are Native Americans, his method is a challenge for each of us to find our mythic structures and to use them to mature the flat world view of Western materialism.Again and again his clients are struck by how familiar their work is with Dr. Duran. They literally reclaim a conscious relationship to their souls and to their mental and spiritual health. This book is a further development of his first book which was a theoretical consideration of postmodern neocolonial therapeutic models. This book actually introduces healing practices which demonstrate explicitly his theoretical viewpoint. If you read Dr. Duran's second book, "Buddha in Redface", this is what happened to the therapist in that book when he "grew up".It is a book of hope, elegance, humor, and finally of meaning. ... inspiring, thoughtful, well written

5-0 out of 5 stars Great meditations
This book weaves together stories - memories and experiences - of Cherokee ceremonies and conversations with elders. The stories tell the message (sometimes in a long about way but they get there) and then there are these mediation exercises that usually include sitting down out in nature, breathing fully and focusing on a certain image or word. Its neat. The stories are easy to read and the mediations are quite relaxing and centering. Lots of life lessons included here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please respect our culture
Joy Parker obviously has an economic stake in all of this, so I wonder a little bit about her motives. In Mexico, I think that what you would see generally is more along the lines of what Mr. Holman describes and not what is being claimed either by Avila or Parker. Parker seems to be saying that she is the final artiber in that she addressed these matters in her book and if you will just buy and read it, you will find out. That is both circular logic and it is evasive. And did I mention that it is self-serving in more than one way? I mean, I don't want to get in trouble for running down a whole genre of books that they sell on Amazon, but they would sell just as many if people would go for the scholarly kind, like the Trotter book for instance. I like that choice. I read Holman's review. He never said that they were right about everything but that they were still one of the best options. Parker is very unfairly spinning that.
5-0 out of 5 stars From the Horse's Mouth
I am the co-author of Woman Who Glows in the Dark. I had not visited this page for quite some time and was deeply troubled to read the review written by Edward B. Holman. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I feel that Mr. Holman has made some grave misjudgements about an author he has never met. He has also reported information, inaccurately and out of context, regarding a book I find it difficult to believe he has read. None of his references get beyond p. 28, and Chapter 1 starts on p. 41.
