The Most Important Book I've Ever Owned!
This book should be required reading by everyone!I have given away copies of this book, and have one of my own.I have learned more about life from this book - how to deal with it, handle it, and survive it - then any other book I've ever read.
Spot-On
I used one of the readings in this book and one of the readings in its sequel, "More Language of Letting Go," as the topics in a recent 12-step meeting I was called on to lead.I was a little bit fearful about using these books, as this was not a meeting of the 12-step program that might be most naturally associated with Ms. Beattie and her writings (although a close cousin).The second person to speak up after I opened the meeting for sharing confirmed my belief that these books were "spot-on," and so I have chosen that as the title of my review.(You know who you are, should you ever read these words, and I thank you once again.)
Great message for daily living

A Valuable Introduction andResource
The workbook, two guided meditation CD's and study guide provide the beginner to Vipassana (Insight) meditation with all they need to begin and sustain their meditation practice. Theory and practice wrapped up in one package. For content and price it is hard to beat.

A great tool to help learn about meditation and put it into practice.

A good introductory meditation series
There are many things I liked about this guided meditation series.I particularly liked the way the walking meditation was presented.I haven't heard this explained very well on other audio resources, so this was a value add for me.

Yoga Nidra Meditation CD
I have been using Yoga Nidra in my teaching work for years and find this CD to be a very useful addition, informationally and practically as far as the meditation included on the CD is concerned.
It really works
Every time I come home from work and feel stress, overwhelming with the everything, I just turned this CD on and started my meditation.
Delivers the goods
A friend recommended this CD. I do not know the author, either. I have used it daily for the past month and love it. I like the fact that there is only a voice directing me through the meditation, it helps to focus. If I use it a night, I fall asleep immediately and sleep without interruption until morning (unless my cat wants to be let out early). Alternatively, I use it in the late afternoon to relax from the stress of the day, before beginning evening chores. I am a yoga practitioner and have also felt its benefits in my asana practice. ... Wonderful introduction to mindfulness meditation
I'm sad to see a reviewer be so judgmental about this audio - especially one who claims to respect the teachings of the Buddha.These guided meditations are accessible for anyone, without the baggage of what some might call a religion - Buddhism. (For me, it's a philosophy more than a religion, and I have learned more about Buddha and his teachings because of these audios.)As cassette tapes, these audios were my introduction to the practice, and they resonated for me then, and still do after 13 years.
a dumbed-down version of old Buddhist texts - ex. Satipatthana Sutta
It's very disappointing to read/listen to individuals who take old buddhists texts and re-interpret the texts as their own.Kabat-Zinn borrows so much and rarely mentions Buddhism.Pitiful.For those critically evaluating the book/audio, it's useful to note that many of these new ideas are actually old ones; simply because no one has a copyright on old buddhist texts doesn't imply that we can without impunity stealthily borrow their ideas without citation.
Disappointing
I was disappointed by the lack of creativity brought to this expensive set of cd's.I'm sorry to say, "Guided Mindfulness Meditation" was silent, and slow going.Metaphors, stories, nuggets, and music were missing.My first purchase of Dr. Kabat-Zinn's work was the audiotape, "Wherever You Go There You Are".Dr. Kabat-Zinn did a great job here through his use of voice, music, and text.He was able to transport me to a peaceful state, his soothing voice lyrically illustrating relaxation metaphors.Soothing music was the backdrop for his interesting approach mixing together fact and story.I was hoping "Guided Mindfullness Meditation" would be just as inviting. ... A very easy way to be introducted to this concept
This is a book that is very easy to read and introduces a western person to concepts of Budism without the religious part.It is a great way to learn concepts that are helpful in daily life.It can help a person to be more focused and effective in life by being mindful.This is a must read.He also has CDs or Tapes for meditation which are very easy to learn to meditate from.It is not religious either.It is just focusing on your breath.This is budism that can be incorporated into the life of anyone of any faith because it is just the concepts and not the religious aspects, but after learning these things one might want to explore more into a faith that creates such wonderful things.

Not his best work
I love Dyer's voice and thought this would be quite incredible so my expectations were high ~ my mistake.All is well until it comes to the sounds he is instructing the listener to chant and then his voice becomes the most annoying drone that distracts the meditation and thus defeats the purpose.Later he adds some affirmations that seem out of place and throws your focus off even further.It may have been helpful if he had included some music in the background to make the recording more relaxing and give the listener something else to hear besides Dyer breathing between chants.Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of his work and always will be.However, I'm a little surprised that this recording remains on the market rather than being re-recorded to bring the quality to a higher standard.
My Cruisin' Meditation
I love this CD.I have always felt silling trying to meditate at home, but have been using this in the car during my commute to and from home.No, I am not zoning-out while driving!I just chant along with Wayne & find myself calmer and more centered when I arrive at my destination.It's a great way to "shed the workday" before you get home.

Daily Reading and Daily Living is the Key to Sobriety.

The WORST meditation cd I have EVER experienced!
This cd is a complete WASTE OF MONEY!
excellent introduction to meditation on the breath
This is the best cd I've ever tried for practicing "breathing" meditation.Bodhipaksa leads you through some common sense exercises focusing on the breath. His voice is gentle and soothing. This is a great cd for beginners.

Bodhipaksa's soothing voice with a slight Scottish bur is marvelous to listen to and helps with the acceptance of the meditative journey that he takes his listeners on.

Freedom from Mara (Illusion)
This is an interesting dimension on the 12-steps which were Christian in origin and spiritual in nature. One Breath at a Time is a Buddhist slant on the one day at a time approach in recovery. One primary lesson from Buddhist philosophy is that attachment and craving are at the root of suffering. Addiction is both an attachment and a craving whose compulsions take over and trap an individual in an endless cycle. Whether the addiction is to a substance or a behavior the illusion that it frees the person from pain is what mara is ... a mirage promising bounties that are empty. So ... for those who are interested in other perspectives of recovery - this is one read to consider.

This book is well written and easy to read.I relapsed with 13+ years in a 12 step program and having a difficult time getting reconnected.As someone with Buddhist leanings who never quite bridged the gap between the steps and Buddhism I found this book to be of great help.If you are even remotely interested in working the 12 steps from a Buddhist perspective I highly recommend this book.

BUY THIS BOOK!
Want to meditate? Can't meditate. Tried to meditate? Can't meditate. Gave up on ever meditating ... until I found this book in the bookstore (or it found me!). I'm 4 weeks into it and can't believe it (since I'm a master procrastinator). And, I already feel the benefits. This book is so clear, concise and speaks directly to the "real" questions beginning meditators have (even "what do I do if I have to pee!")

FInding One Self and Fulfilling a Dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.

Sarah Breathnach writes about the simple pleasures in life in such a way that it makes you want to try all the wonderful small joys she speaks about in the book. Even my husband picks it up and reads the daily messages. He comes out with a smile on his face with some kind of comment on the subject matter each day!

"They give you a book to read"
I keep this book on the shelf with my favorite books. I think of this as a wisdom book. It's the 'lost' book from Richard Bach's Illusions. I usually pick this up when there's something bothering me, or something big is going on in my life. Sometimes I open it up, and get nothing (or so I think at the time). Then, there are times when I open it up and amazed at what I find! For instance, I was trying to decide WHY I should go into a certain career. I was back and forth over "should I do it or not?!" -I picked up this book, and this is what I read:
Love this book.
What a great little book! Not too big, and not a lot of content, but very powerful and thought-provoking words. These "proverbs" are from the previous Bach book Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, which is also a book I highly recommend. Page after page, each with an idea or thought that is at once simple and logical in so many ways, yet very insightful and inspiring. Very nice indeed. The suede-like cover is a nice touch also.

A Great Introduction to Buddhist Thought and Meditation!
This book and Sakyong Mipham's more recent "Ruling Your World," are permanent fixtures in my library.Sometimes Buddhist writings can be difficult to understand or relate to, but this author has a Western background and is able to communicate ideas in ways that are easy to identify with for people without a background in Buddhist thought.Our culture and the media encourage "monkey mind," and it's hard to gain control of inner thought processes in a world that constantly communicates "Buy More, Do More, Be More."This book offers a means of calming the internal turmoil and developing your mind to reach its potential.
Good book-very helpful
This book has been helpful for dealing with anxiety/depression.I'm not much into just meditating or even following Buddhist thinking, however, there is value in what I've learned from this book -- disciplining the mind and learning to keep the mind "present".This has helped me from worrying "too far ahead" or losing perspective of life by helping strengthen my mind.I highly recommend this book along with practicing some form of meditation if you struggle with anxiety or negative/worrying thoughts.

Best introduction to meditation
I think what sets this book apart from others of its kind is the unmatched clarity and simplicity of the language. The unique situation here is that Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, an accomplished and very learned Tibetan Buddhist teacher, grew up in the West and so speaks our language like a native. Because of this, he is able to speak to us in a way that most other equally accomplished Tibetan lamas are unable to. It's important to emphasize that meditation is best learned and practiced under the guidance of a living human being who has some experience with it - a book alone will not suffice. The Key to Life
I don't think we as human beings actually recognize the power of daily reading, meditation, and reflecting.Practicing these powerful principles allows us to remain mindful of the moment and reflect upon the deeper question in our lives.To devote ourself to a daily meditation and to journal on these quiet times is priceless and will certainly aid in the evolution of our soul.For me this practice has allowed an awakening to take place and opens my life up to all the opportunities that are available in this universe.Please give this practice a try!This book will help you in your journey of living and cultivating an active consciousness in your daily life.

I am just a beginner at Meditation, and I am trying to learn this for my health.

This is a solid introduction to the practice of meditation. The first disc features Weil and Kabat-Zinn giving background information about meditation. The second disc features guided meditations. Like any spiritual practice, the more information an individual gets, the better he or she becomes at that practice. Have used it for years
I've used this personally for years, through my husband's illness from dementia and subsequent death. As a retired social worker, I've given a number of copies to friends for use in their bereavement. It's so applicable, small and easy to use.

"It Grew on Me"
I purchased this book for my dad and myself after my mother's recent death.At first I thought it was going to be a bit too simplistic in it's daily readings, but soon found out that when experiencing grief, simplicity can be comforting.Her writing is clear and concise.
I keep a supply of these books on hand.

Great for a beginner
I am a novice to mediation, and was looking for mediation/visualization resources to help me stay calm and centered during a very stressful and negative time in my life.I never found her voice irritating as others have-- on the contrary I find it soothing and easy to listen to.It was very effective in helping me stay positive during challenging times (and I believe the positive imagery helped turnaround a negative situation)

A helpful guide to basic meditation
This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to learn more about basic meditation. In addition to guiding us through different methods of meditation step by step, Stephen Bodian also gives us a short summary of the history of meditation which is interesting and in the same time puts everything into context.

Practicing the Power of Now: Essential Teachings, Meditations, and Exercises from the Power of Now
Having already read the 'Power of Now', I found that "Practicing the Power of Now:..." was much more to-the-point and condensed from the original 'Power of Now'. I thought it wasconcise and much easier to follow. The truths set forth in Echart Tolle's work are not to be glossed over. They transcend every person's religion because you can read his words with 'spiritual discernment' to apply the truths to your life and understand it - no matter what your belief system is. I think every man, woman and child should get aquainted with what the author is showing us. It will change your life for the better if you allow it to.

Very useful publication
Although i have known people reading "Practicing the Power of Now" without having read "The Power of Now," i would suggest to either read the latter first, or both books together: start with pages from "Power of Now," then the pages from "Practicing..." to go deeper into the understanding of the original book.
