5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Ayurveda I've ever read
I picked up Essential Ayurveda on a whim at a natural foods store when I was really looking for something else. What attracted me was the simple recipes and the pleasant, conversational voice of the author. When I began reading it at home, I was so glad I had trusted my instincts! I have been interested in Ayurvedic diet for many years but felt it was complicated and hard to prepare. But this author shows how simple it can be--and very clearly illustrates how the loving, respectful, harmonic way of living with and caring for yourself flows through all of life--not just diet. A wonderful book. I think it's the last book I'll ever need in order to understand Ayurveda better. I also already have "Heaven's Banquet," which the author recommends as a great source for balanced and healing recipes. Now I'll go back to that book with new eyes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
This book is a very basic, very essential introduction to Ayurveda. It is very well organised into the different segment of life (foods, exercise, beauty, mental well-being etc), but the style is narative, it takes you along as if on a journey. At one point you will find yourself in an Indian kitchen, smelling the spices and the vegetables, and imagining the colours, sounds and the surroundings of an Indian family eating breakfast. I've implemented almost to the letter and sometimes with scepticism the advice of the author and after 6 weeks, our life (family of 6 with baby and small children) has truly changed and improved in all spheres (physical health, happiness, pleasure in smaller things, less materialistic etc). Now we are ready for more books and research on the subject, the book is a great spring board for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic, but Terrific
I don't agree with the reviewer who says this book is too basic, and not for those who want 'more'. Of course it isn't, because it never claims to be! This book is meant to be a simple introduction to Ayurveda, and does a wonderful job of doing that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heal Beyond Symptoms
Lesley Tierra's book is a refreshing look at the old system of energetic herbology. While many herbals focus on healing the ailments, this book introduces the concept of healing the energy imbalance. As such, it is not a reference book for a quick fix. It teaches a different philosophy for using herbs.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on herbal healing by far!!
This is a vastly revised 2nd edition. Anyone perusing the numbers of herbs books available on the market should notice at least two shortcomings: 1. They are not written by practicing clinical herbalists and so they often just pass on 2nd and 3rd hand information 2. They are not wholistic in the sense that they do not integrate diet, lifestyle and the many other factors necessary for a successful therapeutic result. Then there is the current wave of herb books written by inexperienced medical authorities with little or not practical experience in the clinical herbal medicine. Most of these are practically useless. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The "top of the mountain" just got closer!
With great volumes of information available to us as never before, a certain amount of confusion seems almost inherent.Naturally, the extremely complex and everchanging subject of human health and medicine has become one of the largest breeding grounds for this exact phenomenon.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Practical, Wide-Ranging Body of Work for Your Body
The great thing about books by people who've learned the hard way, who've endured adversity, is that their authors can offer real-world expertise. When a person like Jan, who's endured health adversity, teams up with a board-certified doc, the result is a well-balanced compilation of sensible health approaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly accessible means for Buddhist students and practitioners of all experience levels to learn from an ancient source
The Moon Of Wisdom: Chapter Six Of Chandrakirti's Entering The Middle Way is a rational explanation of Nagarjuna's seminal and classic work "The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way", which summarized the teachings of the Buddha and used logical reasoning to demonstrate their validity. The five sections presented are "The Refutation of Arising from the Four Extremes - Section A", "The Refutation of the Proponents of Perception", "The Refutation of Arising from the Four Extremes - Section B", "The Absence of Personal Self", and "The Sixteen Types of Emptiness". Each section is divided into numerous short statements, observations, and passages, each of which is presented in their original language on the one page and skillfully translated into English by the team of Ari Goldfield, Jules Levinson, Jim Scott, & Birgit Scott on the opposite page. Commentary from the Eighth Karmapa Mikyo Dorje's "Chariot of the Dagpo Kagyu Siddhas" is included, as are a wealth of notes. A highly accessible means for Buddhist students and practitioners of all experience levels to learn from an ancient source that helped preserve and propagate the Buddha's teachings for well over a thousand years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarification
To clarify something the last reviewer said, there is in fact a chapter in this book that describes the month-by-month development of the baby and the physical and emotional changes a mother might experience.Full disclosure: I wrote the book with Joel Evans (so I had to give us 5 stars!).

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to read, but is it worth buying??
This book is unique among other pregnancy books I've seen in that it really is trying to incorporate medical science with alternative medicine for the educated reader. It's pretty comprehensive, but that means that it lacks a lot of detail that we want to know, particularly concerning the week-by-week or month-by month accounts of pregnancy. I would not rely on this as my only pregnancy guide. I was rather disturbed that Dr. Evans' says that it is acceptable to drink a glass of wine or beer per week or two with a meal in the second and third trimesters - I think everyone can agree that it is best not to drink at all as soon as a pregnancy is confirmed until after breastfeeding is stopped. I think it is rather negligent to state otherwise. If you want the bioflavonoid protection from red wine, drink red grape juice - it has the same stuff in it without the alcohol! On the plus side, the book has good sections on prenatal yoga and nutrition, and I found the "Real Voices" vignettes interspersed throughout to be a good way to give some real pregnant women's views and experiences (the author, Dr. Evans, is a male) without being silly and condescending ("A Few Good Eggs" comes to mind). On the whole, this is a book worth looking at, but I would check it out at the library before you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great choice
This book is as enlightening as it is reassuring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for Chinese/Eastern medincine
This is an excellent book to have as a reference fo eastern methodologies in medicine and healing.Unfortunately it is long out of print, but if you can get your hands on a copy of this text, you will not be dissappointed. In fact, if you are unhappy with it, I will be happy to purchase it from you as I have many peers that would happily use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ancient tradition, many modalities
Over 3000 years old, Chinese medicine is based on the Taoist holistic vision of balancing all the body harmonies. This book is a lavishly illustrated and complete guide to every aspects of this tradition. It is not a self-help book, but a guide explaining the concepts and principles and providing a detailed description of certain therapeutic exercises that everyone can use to optimise health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Searing, honest, funny, great
Jeanne Achterberg breaks the mold of illness memoirs and healing tracts with her searing honesty, wit, fresh prose style, insight, and sheer spiritual brazenness. What a joy to read, a powerful investigation of the sorrowful, tough, often elevating experiences of this wounded healer going deeper to try to heal herself, and the personal losses and gains that occur along the way.Bless her for being so nakedly honest in sharing the hard truths about her marriage and personal life in a way that doesn't make the reader feel like a voyeur but like a dear friend who needs to know about the intertwined tentacles of her life as she lives it, and as she tries to extend and expand it both by turning within and by reaching out. Actherberg helps us understand that illness can be a metaphor; it all depends on what metaphor we construct, what truths it holds, and what we do about it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read
An in-depth look at Master Hong's journey in becoming a Qi Gong Master. I have purchased and given away many copies of this book to friends as an introduction of what Qi Gong can do in the hands of a true master and how Qi Gong is so important in maintaining and keeping our health in harmony.

If you've never heard of Qi Gong, or are interested in learning more about Eastern medicine, definitely give this book a try. Qi Gong is a healing art which can be both applied externally by a master, or internally by yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good description of techniques - but be warned
People can I please advise you to make sure you are first very well established in the first 2 levels of Yoga before you embark on any Pranayama (breath-control). First be steeped in Yama(abstinences - alcohol, drugs, sex, meat, etc) and Niyama(observances - love, kindness, non-harm, patience, etc) before moving on to asans(postures) and especially pranayama. Every swami will tell you that if you are not living a committed Spiritual life in every respect, then practicing the 4th level of Yoga - breathing exercises, especially the advanced ones, can potentially be harmful. You should really only practice techniques like this within the framework of a spiritual society and Guru-disciple relationship. Breathing techniques force prana up the subtle spine, thus awakening higher and higher chakra's. This is a truly unbelievable book on advanced yoga. The greatest section of the book is the description of advanced (very advanced !) pranayama.Swami Rama first gives a lengthy explanation of the preparation forpranayama & nadi shodhanam. Then, he instructs you on how to achieveamazing spiritual transformation through extreme breath-holding.In whatis surely the most fascinating section, Swami Rama describes, in detail, what happens to the body & energy of a yogi as he holds his breath for5, 10, 13 or more minutes.Using Swami Rama's wisdom I have alreadyachieved kumbhaka's (breath-holds) of over 7 minutes! What an amazingfeeling to feel your heart rate drop to 20 beats per minute after 5minutes!And the state of consciousness that ensues is of courseindescribable.I have one suggestion: Get this book!(Swami Rama's'Science of Breath' is a great companion book).

5-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Traditions Brought Alive
I spend my weekends in the Thai countryside at a place called Kung Wiman and am amazed at the local knowledge about Thai herbs which they use in their everyday lives. My husband, who is Thai, taught me quite a lot, but it's been difficult because he only knew the Thai names for plants and herbs. So C. Pierce Salguero's book has been a huge help, as it gave names in Thai as well as common and Latin names along with explanations and context. It has helped me to identify plants and their uses. I am trying them out for myself and have had a good experience so far. By the way many of these herbs are now available in other countries and there are also parallels with traditions such as Ayurveda and Chinese. My only small criticism is that I would like to see the names written in the Thai script as well. I recently bought another of his books on spiritual healing which is also very good. These ancient healing techniques are unique and very much alive today and it is fantastic that C. Pierce Salguero is introducing them to a wider audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully inspiring book!
As a Thai Massage Practioner I have found "A Thai Herbal" to be an excellent addition to my library & my practice. This book is perfect for people with any level of knowledge in herbology, from basic to advanced. It looks at Traditional Thai Healing systems from the holistic standpoint, discussing not only the Materia Medica of Thai Herbs but also the Thai traditions of use for them. Pierce guides the reader on a journey of using Thai herbs thru diet, massage, herbal compresses and bodycare/household products that ends with the reader feeling they have really been taught from a traditional viewpoint. It also contains a very helpful resource section for those wanting to learn more about these healing plants.

Editorial Review

A year or so ago, a Feldenkreis instructor conducted a seminar for a handful of fitness journalists. The movements we tried were based on the way infants twist to roll themselves over and get around. Within a couple of hours, my flexibility and posture had improved dramatically. Feldenkreis, as Read more
