4-0 out of 5 stars A useful text for western students
Traditionally, ayurveda has been taught orally, with reference to ancient texts like the works of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata; references that are still used today. These writings, which are believed to date thousands of years, contain the eternal and universal principles of the natural science of ayurveda; however they also contain therapies and lifestyle prescriptions which are hopelessly archaic; and materia medica which are no longer accessible (e.g. opium and camel's urine!). With the spread of ayurveda to the West, there emerged a great need for a text that not only catered to the western mode of thinking and education, but that also made connections between the ayurvedic view of anatomy and physiology, and that of the West. This book attempts to do just that.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "Complete Guide"
I've recently purchased several ayurvedic books and will be returning most of them now. This book has everything.I MUST have.It is very thorough and extremely interesting. Not just a rehashing of information found elsewhere. If you only have one book - get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the Ayurvedic student!
Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Get it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners
I found this book disappointing, and much prefer her previous book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, OK recipes
This book is interesting to read and great help in deciding what to eat to balance your vikrities (imbalances). You start out learning some Ayurvedic basics and then you can test yourself to find out what your dosha (constitution) is.Then you learn what foods and tastes agrivate or calm that dosha. It tells you a little bit about what the symptoms of an imbalance might be, but I got more descriptive information about that on the Internet. One reason I like this book is because me and my fiance are different constitutions, and this book tells us which foods will calm/ balance us both. There are simple instructions on most recipes that explain how to modify the recipe so that it suits a person with a different constitution. It also has codes for what seasons to eat what food, and every chapter or so has interesting blurbs about different foods and philosophies. That part I enjoy. And from my experience, Ayurveda WORKS.Fast and precisely.4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful!
This was one of the cookbooks used as reference for a six hour introductory workshop on Ayurveda that I attended. I had a chance to leaf through it, along with three other cookbooks, and this one seemed to be the most useful with a good background included on the basic concepts of ayurveda. I have USED it! As anyone who has a cookbook collection will recognize, this is the ultimate recommendation! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ayurveda book but just average cookbook.
I was excited to get this book. Read it attentively and tried two of the recipies. Kitchari for Vata and Spicy Vegetable Fried Rice. The explaination by Vasant Lad was good and detail. I like it very much. As for the recipies, they smells superb but are tasteless. I still recomend this book for those who like to learn to cook a ayurvedic balanced food. But if you are looking into cooking a delicious mouth watering meal. This is not the book. Still an excellent ayurvedic book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the recipes need modification
My main complaint is that some of the recipes create absolute mush. I found that it helped if I reduced the water in some of the recipes (for example for Kitchari, I used 5 cups of water instead of the recommended 6 cups) and/or washing/soaking the rice or beans only briefly instead of overnight. This may be because I live at sea level (?) but some of the recipes seemed to err in favor of cooking too long in too much water.
5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent guidebook for healthy living
This is a book by Vasant Lad and his wife. They give easy to follow guidelines on the best foods for your body type, along wtih great recipes.I have tried a few so far, and all are excellent. The explanations for each recipe are very detailed and informative, and accurately give the best types for the recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars The deeper side of cooking
This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes!
This is a fantastic cookbook for experienced cooks wanting to explore both Indian cooking as well as Ayurvedic cooking.I've learned a lot about the appropriate use and balance of traditional Indian spices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tastes, Love and Wisdom
This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990.Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best yoga books out there...
I had the pleasure of doing a weekend workshop with Ms. Kozak a few years ago after reading this book.I find myself constantly referring to it when I have questions about the doshas or the poses in general. You will not be disappointed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Yoga Information Around
Yoga For Your Type is a great book on Yoga.It teaches about Ayurveda and how we can know ourselves better and how we can then use our postures to help us manage our energy, feelings, and lives. It is also a really good book about yoga. The descriptions of the poses are thorough and understandable and as good as you can find anywhere.I use this

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for herbs
My copy is older (1986).I imagine there is a new and updated version out.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best herb book i've ever read.
This is the best, bar none. It goes into detail with each herb, telling us the energetics of the herbs, in terms of ayurveda-the oldest system of popular standardized medicine in the world. Ayurveda literally means science of life. There is indepth information on the physical and psychological effects of each herb. It even tells you how the herbs relate to the chakras. Dr. Vasant Lad is the countrys' leading authority on Ayurveda (besides Deepak Chopra)and he got together with David Frawley-a very learned Vedic scholar to write this book. Together they make magic happen. This book is more than worth the money .

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
An excellent guide to Ayurvedic medical applications of herbs. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Ayurveda
This book was a clear yet comprehensive introduction to a very complex system of medicine with which I had had no previous experience. It was very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A basic book
This is a basic book on Ayurveda, giving a great overview on its basic principles. Anyone intersted on this subject should read it, and it is very suitable for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I had the privilage of being treated by Dr. Lad as well as going to several clases he gives at the Ayurvedic institute in Albuquerque NM. The book is a wonderful aid in trying to understand and identify health and disease. You have to be able to understand that "western" medicine is not the answer for everything and that in many cases it will eventually make you even sicker. What do you prefer, Prozac or a cup of some herbal tea that will eventually help you with depression?. What do you prefer, a cup of chamomile tea along with jatamansi or Pepto Bismol?.Ayurveda is something very real, helpful and extremely cheap. Hmmmm..... just wondering why allopacy wants to destroy alternative methods. Even better, is Ayurveda really an alternative treatment? 3,000 years before Jesus Ayurveda was being practiced...so, just wondering whos really alternative. Give ita try, Vasant Lad is a great humble and loving person. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Answer, This is it !
I have lost weight all of my life. I have lost well over 500 pounds. (20 to 30 pounds per year) Gain, lose, gain lose; I took comfort in knowing the bears do it. The only problem as Deepak notes is that there is scientific evidence that yo yo weight control is not good for your health. With the exception of those who are clinically obese, over 25% above the normal weight for your body type, the yo yo'er is a big risk. I have successfully done just about every diet out there. The only problem is that each of them is based on excluding a food group out of your diet. After a while you crave that food group.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not-So-Perfect Book about Perfect Weight
This book was less than helpful for me.First of all, the section on figuring out your body type was confusing and I did not come up with a clear-cut answer.Although this book contained some interesting theories and ideas, the majority of the techniques and suggestions are completely impractical for anyone with a normal life, schedule and job.For example, I work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and most days without a lunch "break".I eat in the car on the way to my next client. So how am I supposed to eat a large, hot meal at a specific time, made of freshly cooked food and not leftovers?Really, unless they invent microwave ovens for cars, it's not going to happen. Also, some of the other ideas were just downright unappealing to me, bordering on disgusting (drinking boiled warm milk and sipping hot water with ginger all day while eliminating cold drinks). This plan may be very effective for the independently wealthy who are able to sit meditating in a beatiful natural setting and have a personal shopper and chef to wait on them. But for the rest of us, this book does not contain much practical advice for people with busy lives.I know myself and this is a weight loss program requiring too many radical changes and impractical ideas that I would never get past the first week.I found this book to be a not-so-perfect weight loss theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read. Practical and fascinating. It changed my view on health and self care.
Once I opened the first page of this book I could hardly stop reading it. It is as deep and practical as it is easy to read. It gave me the most valuable knowledge on Indian Ayurvedic medicine, a deeper understanding of my body type, and how to use -- in daily life -- simple techniques and the appropriate food to keep or recover health ... I strongly recommed this book to anyone willing to either recover or keep a good mind-body health.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent complimentary medicine
Dr. Deepak Chopra is one of the worlds foremost authoroties on the link between traditional Western medicine and complimentary medicine based on Ayurvedic principals, at least in my mind. I may be biased here, since I have read and listened to much of Dr. Chopra's work and utilized in my life in many ways. Perfect Health was the first book I read by Chopra and it edged me on in my search for this state we call "perfect health".
2-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing
I had always eyed this book, and now wish I had broken down and bought it earlier. Tierra has put so much information in these pages its breathtaking, a wonderful way to blend Ayurveda, TCM, and Western herbalism. With the popularity of the internet and with herbalists exploring different cultures and enjoying different aspects of various paths, this book should become a welcome addition to libraries everywhere. Tierra digs into the background of all three branches, breaking down the basics of each area of thought, including more than 400 herbs and their details. It gives Western herbalists another way to view herbs and their actions, which makes the book worth it on its own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, everyone should have a copy
I have every single one of this authors books. The information in them is terrific, including this one. It covers the different types of herbal philosophies.Mainly the Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. He integrates them both with western herbs, and makes it work. I won't say his book has everything and every herb but it has a lot, and some of the more unusual herbs you usually can't find in the regular every day herb books. It's wonderful, and worth every penny you pay for it ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
We love this book!We have made many of the recipes that have all tasted great and are healthy. We also gave it to everyone for Christmas and they all love the recipes too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and practical
This book offers a simple way to start eating healthy. I've been interested in gourmet food and cooking for years and then became a student of Ayurveda. Though the concepts of Ayurvedic eating are introduced in the beginning, and the recipes follow ayurvedic guidelines, the book isn't complicated with hard to understand terms. Best of all, the preparations are wonderful for a taste-discriminating Western palate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookbook I've ever owned!
This cookbook is filled with healthy and delicious recipes. It is well-written, with easy to follow directions and ingredients that are readily available. I really like the 30-day meal plan that is included; it takes all the guess work out of menu planning. While I was not a vegetarian before I began using this cookbook, I am now! The food is so delicious and high enough in protein that I don't miss meat at all--although for you die-hard carnivores, there are many recipes that have meat-optional directions. This book has everything from breakfast foods through desserts and these recipes have gained approval from my toughest critics: my 10- and 14-year-old sons. Although not diet food, my husband and I have both lost weight since we began following the 30-day plan. The food is so nutritious and satisfying, that our junk food cravings have been greatly reduced. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for healthy and delicious recipes. Enjoy! ... This is an perl. I put everything on place. I had been around seeking, done meditation, gone regularly to yoga/chanting. When i read this book, i took a quantesprang.... i now are alot more aware of what going on in me, just after the understanding of this book, and practis it. Get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ayurvedic psychology
This is an EXCELLENT book. Abstract and very deep truths are lucidly conveyed without sacrificing intricacy or impact. If you are interested in psychology, spirituality, or Ayurveda, this is a wonderful, unique book. Dr. Frawley is extremely thorough and brings much integrity to his work. This book may be a bit much for some, but those truly interested in furthering their awareness will find many treasures in these pages. If you are looking for an intro to Ayurveda, start with something else, like Dr. Frawley's "Yoga and Ayurveda."

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit less enthusiastic
I'm somewhat less excited than the other readers of this fine book. It's a nice introduction to ayurvedic concepts, but it's a bit general and broad--and I'm far from being an expert.Ultimately, it just doesn't seem very useful. But, of course, anything by David F. is going to be well written and informative. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the non-elite athlete too
I first read this book back in the early nineties after hearing an interview of Mr. Douillard on NPR.The introduction to his book explains that he is looking to make participation in sport more accessible to all people, not just the elite athletes. The breathing techniques he discusses sound nuts at first, and are a little trick to master (especially if you have a cold!) but once you get used to them, they really really work.I was never athletic growing up, but since reading this book, I have used the techniques and completed 17 marathons, including 4 ultramarathons.I never finish first - but I really enjoy participating. Before being exposed to these techniques, I never would have thought I could run a mile - much less 50!If you are looking to start an exercise program, get into shape, or have a specific fitness goal, this is a really worthwhile book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda & Yoga For Everbody
As a person who follows Ayurvedic health principles and has a regular yoga practice, I was already familiar with most of the concepts presented in this book. My fitness and athletic performance have greatly benefitted from these principles. However, this is the first book I have read that really applies the pricniples to fitness and athletic competition. The book has several techniques that I already knew, but did not consider applying to athletics as described in the book.I have been doing the breathing method described for years, but never considered actually doing it during competition. It works.5-0 out of 5 stars this is a must have book
I bought this book 8 years ago, I use what I learned form it and have never looked back.I am a mountain runner, and found new power speed and recovery using this book. It's a winner!! I also combine this book with " The Zone " by barry seares and I have to say its works, no messing no sales pitch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Life In Balance
I disagree with a previous reviewer that this book is mainly a cookbook.I find that it has MUCH more to offer than that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Super excellent book
Its a MUST to read book. If you want to improve your health, want to get the best of your body, read this book. It will help you learn about your body type, and "sadhanaas"(i.e. routines, food, etc) accordingly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forced to enter a one-line summary of my review
As far as I'm aware, there are only 2 books in existence that are vegetarian ayurvedic cookbooks--this one & "The Healing Cuisine" by Harish Johari; and i most highly recommend them both.(Ido no recommend "the ayurvedic cookbook" by Morningstar... it isnot veggie & really just a disappointment in terms of ingredients &the recipes).Tiwari is a very nice compliment to Dr. Lad's"Ayurveda: the science of self-healing", which is *the*definitive modern introduction to ayurveda.Tiwari's perspective is muchmore cosmic, poetic, and much about vibrational healing, cognitive memoryand DNA alignment. As one reviewer noted, she makes reference to Hinduism& the more complex aspects of the mechanics of ayurvedic energeticsthat, even to those relatively familiar, will feel like walking thru mud...Visual representations & diagrams would be helpful, which this book isessential devoid of.That is my only complaint.the text could certainlybe edited down to make room for more visuals. This is a complete guide forsomeone dedicated to an ayurvedic lifestyle--with charts covering theenergetics & qualities of just about every food and their vibrationalalignment with the body types, and daily & seasonal menus for the bodytypes, all 10 of them. There is, among many things, a section on foodsadhanas, or the ritualization of the nourishment process (food prep, cooking & eating). There are listings of ingredients & there's aglossary in the back of the more uncommon ingredients. She does not givemuch treatment to yoga asanas & pranayama, though there is treatment ofdaily routines. Now, unlike Johari, the recipes are all explicitly codedwith respect to the 10 body types & the 4 seasons (i.e., which bodytypes the recipes will help to balance & the season(s) in which theyshould be used)... A rather in-depth practical working guide to ayurvediccooking. This along with Dr. Lad, and you're doing good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars important information
A Woman's Best Medicine is one of the most uplifting and important books I have ever read.I read it some years ago and have just reviewed it which prompted me to buy several more copies to hand out on loan, to women I care about. It's easy to read, easy to follow and I wish all women had a copy! I have already begun to benefit healthwise, both in a physical sense and in an emotional one, from implementing some of the deeply wise but essentially simple advice. Bless the author. ... Read more
