5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Absolutely the best first book to get on the subject of essential oils.I have purchased a few others, and this is by far, the best in the lot.I take it everywhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
There are other reviews that go into great detail about what is in this book. I will only add this and say it has been a useful book in many ways. It has paid for itself in stress relief recipes alone. It is interesting and helpful and has cured what ails my family many times over.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for essential oil blends
I love using this book to compare and contrast with Roberta Wilson's "Aromatherapy: Essential Oils for Vibrant Health and Beauty."The two books are similar in many ways, though I do consider Roberta Wilson's book to be somewhat better.Nevertheless, I'd still recommend having both on hand, as you can learn a lot from both. There are many blends to choose from in Worwood's book, and lots of ways to get ideas to formulate your own blends.I also enjoy the fact that the book is grouped by condition, which makes it very easy to find information regarding specific issues. There's also a lot of background information on both essential oils and the various states of being they address.I do have one gripe, though, and strangely enough, it's not even about her coverage of essential oils.In one of the chapters, she refers to Bloody Mary as Queen of Scots, which just blows me away, as these are two totally different people.I really would have expected a better knowledge of Northern European history coming from a native of that very region.Other than that and Worwood's questionable knowledge of felines where EOs are concerned, I would still recommend this book as a good addition to your essential oil library. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars too general
Gives uses for many plants and the essential oils but no complete details for making the remedies with the oils. Eg. how much of each oil to put into the natural remedies?

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Essential Oils
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils is a wonderful book to add to a collection of knowledge of Aromatherapy. It contains very detailed properties of each essential oil - easy to understand and great for reference for all to read, learn and practice. If you can't find what you are looking for specifically for an essential oil, you will most definately find it in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Aromatherapy library is not complete if you don't have the book
If I had to have only two books in my Aromatherapy Library, this would be one of them, along with The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, by Salvatore Battaglia. I have been an Aromatherapist since 2003, I know - a relatively short time - but a productive time, and I could not have accomplished what I have without this book. It is a very complete list - if not the best list - of essential oils available in book form, with all their properties, chemical breakdown, methods of extraction, history, ancient uses for the plants and oils, modern uses, toxicity and as if this wasn't enough - the photos are marvolous and extremely helpful in identifying plants and the oil colour. Every plant gets a whole page and the format repeats and is so easy to follow. What makes this book stand out among its peers is the ease of use with an excellent index, glossary of terms, botanical index, botanical classification and references (just because a book has these thing doesn't mean they are always good or useful).

4-0 out of 5 stars Some concepts are dated, but overall, a good health guide
In the book, Mr. Kloss said of all diseases, "God has invented the cure and is waiting for man to discover it."The longer I practice as a pharmacist, the more I realize he was right.
3-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Good information but I find many of the treatments brief or outdated, I prefer The Little Herb Encyclopedia by Jack Ritchason. Together they make the perfect herbal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, important book. Highly recommend it.
This book is turning out to be a valuable tool for me in practice and teaching. I recommend it for students, teachers and health practitioners who want to use essential oils to enhance patient care. It is well-written, objective, practical and has extensive references, summary tables, appendices and index. As a physician, I appreciate its integrative approach. It is a good synthesis of history, chemistry, safety issues, experience, basic science, some of the most current clinical research, clinical applications and more. I especially liked the section on infection. In my opinion, it is an important work, which could well influence future research and clinical use of essential oils in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
This is a great book for any health professional wishing to enhance patient care with aromatherapy. As a nurse, Ifind it to be an outstanding resource full of scientifically based information related to essential oils and their uses. Dr Buckle has included an easy to use index to guide the reader to information on a variety of diseases and conditions which respond to aromatherapyintervention. This is a "must read" for anyone incorporating aromatherapy into a clinical or community setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a good do it yourself book.My dog has separation anxiety and I found this very helpful.I'll keep it handy for other problems as they are encountered.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I found this book to be a nice overview of aromatherapy for the treatment ofsmall animals. It includes a description of the most useful essential oils, case studies, and some very useful recipies that maxamize the benefits of essential oils and hydrosols. The author is very detailed on how the essential oils should be used and applied. She cautions the use of essential oils on cats. Hydrosols should be used instead. This book also highlights the quailty of essential oils and ready made products on the market. I totally agree with her view. It includes a nice list of suppliers, resources and websites that I have found useful. I found this book to be better detailed than other aromatherpy books for small animals.

4-0 out of 5 stars wealth of information
This book is small, but loaded with information that is useful for anyone interested in aromatherapy. The chapter for individual essential oils describes their characteristics and properties with photos of the source. Many recipes are included, with detailed instructions on methods. All in all this is a great book.It was my first aromatherapy book. The only drawback, and the reason I rated it with a '4' is that I have a vision problem and the print is extremely small and the ink is not black. It seems to blend into the paper and I must struggle to read it.With such a small book I think black ink would have been appropriate...not as aesthetically pleasing, but more readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truely an informative book
Don't be fooled by the fact that this book is small in size, if you have an interest in aromatherapy or simply want to add to your knowledge of it, this is the perfect book. When I got this book I read it cover to cover without ever once getting bored and when I was done I was ready to try everything in it. The author not only covers how the oils effect the body, but the intensity levels with wich oils are stonger in smell, wich will last longer on the skin and warnings as to wich ones should not be used and why. The book is 400 pages long, illustrated on glossy paper with great photos. It includes recipes for making massage oils, fragrances for the skin, oils to use durring meditation, how to meditate, how to give a massage, wich oils to use in baths, lotions, in daily skin care and its all very easy to follow. I suggest this book to anyone who has even the slightest interest in essential oils. You wont be dissapointed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip-off
This book is a rip-off. If you want simple, easy recipes to follow, don't buy this book. This book gives a lot of useless information and is poorly written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, a bit confusing
I read this book countless times trying to absorb the processes before I began. I was a bit intimidated, but was that way with CP soaping as well, so knew it was all about "diving in". I've tried two batches of the alcohol method and they were extremely thin. After boiling the soap down for a whole day it got thick, but then crystals started appearing the next day. I probably put too much borax in, but don't really know since I messed so much with the recipe trying to first melt the soap completely (it says if doesn't dissolve it's too concentrated) then thickening it up (then it was like water). Just made my second batch and it's sitting there, thin as can be at 40% soap, with the maximum recommended Borax. I hope to write a better review with a successful batch.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not practical
After making cold process soap for several several years, and working in product development for a major soap company, I must say that this book is interesting, but not very practical and certainly confusing.I suppose I need more science to really understand this process.I found the soap to be very drying, with a "fat" smell that was really hard to cover. Also, the shelf life was not very long. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not as informative as I thought
I'm wondering if the previous reviewers did any online research on the subject before purchasing the book & giving it rave reviews. There's very little information in the book that I can't easily find online. A good/reputable essential oil supplier's website would contain much more information than this book. The descriptions of only a handful essential oils are also extremely lacking. Somtimes she'd say, this oil is usually good for xxx, but I tried just the opposite and it still worked well (paraphrase). But she offers absolutely no explanation why it still worked for her when the oil is typically used for something else. She casually uses her own experience as examples frequently, but offers no detailed explanation. Often she just says, I like this, or I don't like this. Again, no reason why she liked or disliked something. She simply doesn't sound like a professional writer to me (almost airy), and I expected a lot more from the book, especially after reading the other rave reviews. There are many books out there not even specifically focused on the subject of essential oils, but still contain much more useful & detailed information than this book. Total disappointment. Unless you're too lazy to do any online research and only want to touch the surface of what essential oils are, then this may be the book for you. Afterall, it does contain a small amount of information in an organized fashion, but I could've written this book in a week. Otherwise, don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert advice with good mix of recipes
Dr. McDaniel's book is a great reference for those who are seasoned soapers as well as beginners looking for an introduction. One of the reasons this book is superior to others is the fact that the photos are instructional as opposed to decorative. For example, on page 57, he has wonderful photos demonstrating what trace looks like and how it behaves. I LOVED that because trace was the most elusive thing for me. People described it till they were blue in the face and I still didn't get it. It wasn't till I saw the photo that the "Aha!" moment came.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book to Start With
Overall, as a beginner, I enjoyed this book and appreciated a lot of his explanations and directions. I found his explanation of the math/calculation portion a little confusing, however. His step by step soap making was nice. I wish he would have explained different methods of coloring soap a little more. I am interested in making herbal soaps as natural as possible, and this book has helped me to get a basic idea. He goes over melt and pour in a brief overview, and I was glad he didn't spend too much time on it. He teaches the cold process method. I plan to find books that teach hot process next. This book is recommended for beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars dissapointing
The book gives great information on the basic ingredients for lotions , but theres no "SIMPLE beginners recipe" in here, except perhaps at the end in the "Beauty Food" chapter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting recipes, but...
As the owner of a home-based Bath and Body Products business, I am always on the look out for new recipes to try, adapt, etc.Although there are some fabulous sounding recipes in this book, the use of hydrosols, Sea Berry and Rose Hip Seed Co2 (had never heard of them before, ever) make them way too complicated and expensive for someone who just wants to learn how to put together some simple cosmetics at home. Some of the ingredients, waxes in particular, I'd never even heard of.Perhaps someone living in the U.S. would have an easier time acquiring the "exotics," but my excellent Canadian suppliers do not sell them.I also am not keen on her use of Borax in recipes as it can be a sensitizer for some people and there are gentler preservatives on the market one can use.I can't say I'm completely disappointed, but a strong word of caution to those thinking that they'll find easy "first timer" recipes in here -- they won't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some New and Wondrful Recipes
I've read dozens of books over the years that use the same types of natural ingredients.Donna Maria has uncovered and made available the newest aromatheraputic technologies for the home nuetricutical maker. Some folks have had trouble locating ingredients perhaps like CO2 extracts, hydrosols, and waxes. In the years since the book was first published, these ingredients flourish on the internet...there's not one I haven't been able to find.I'm so excited to have a new direction to experiment with for facial and body preparations.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book for those intrigued by the chemistry behind EOs
I really love books on aromatherapy that approach essential oils from a less chemistry oriented viewpoint, but I also have an interest in the more scientific aspects of oils, and Schnaubelt's book definitely falls in that category.Schnaubelt's book is relatively brief (138 pages, including the index), too, so one need not fear becoming too enmeshed in chemical names and structures, and his PhD in chemistry provides a rather unique perspective that sheds even more light on these lovely natural products. My only complaint is his seeming contradiction of himself when discussing what constitutes a "physiologic dosage."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for anyone using Essential Oils
This book along with Kurts other book are my two favorite books on Aromatherapy. Even though there are not a lot of blends written. There are just enough to get the point.
5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Aromatherapy

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone interested in Aromatherapy!
I have bought a few other books on Aromatherapy, over the years, which have given me an introduction into Aromatherapy. None of them compare to the books by Valerie Ann Worwood! I just bought her books "The Fragrant Mind" and "The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy", and they are wonderfully informative as well as a pleasure to read. I highly recommend both of these books for anyone who is interested in learning all that they can about Aromatherapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A deeper look at aromatherapy
This book gives a deeper understading of aromatherapy. Essential oils are much more than something you use for a certain symptom, and Valerie Ann Worwood gets that message through in her book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your usual aromatherapy book
I have not had the good fortune to see a copy of Worwood's other books The Complete Guide to Essential Oils, which I understand is a bible of sorts, and Aromantics, whose title intrigues me very much. The Fragrant Mind isdaring in the sense that it espouses avery unique theory, that ofclassifying personalities based on the scents they prefer.I may notnecessarily totally agree with Worwood, andI have had difficulty figuringout what personality type I have based on her system, but this book isdefinitely interesting reading, especially if you're an aromatherapy fanlike I am.Buy it if only to round out your aromatherapy library. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Novice and Expert
This is a well written, easily understood resource for anyone interested in essential oils and their uses.I bought this book after reading an article in a magazine by the author.I have since bought a couple of other essential oil books and looked at others at a bookstore and none of them came close to providing the usable information that this book does.If you are interested in this subject, don't waste your money on other books, this one has everything you need to better your health in a safe, natural way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing !
The majority of the information in this large book is already published in this authors EODR:Essential Oil Desk Reference.Very little new information and thus it should have been printed in a small volume or pamphlet as an addendum to the EODR.Much better to spend your money on the origianl and very valuable reference manual (the EODR) for all those using the Young Living Essential Oils.Only the "true believers" and followers can or will use this current volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful reference guide - packed with useful information
I first purchased this book for myself and gave that copy to my grandson.I missed it so much that I purchased another copy for myself. It has more useful information than any other book I have reviewed or read on essential oils and the use of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Aromatic
Love this one also, hard to find book that really breaks everythingdown to the smallest degree to get info across, like all his other info books, very informative, also lets you know some things are toxic and should not be tampered with and how others are irritants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Life In Balance
I disagree with a previous reviewer that this book is mainly a cookbook.I find that it has MUCH more to offer than that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Super excellent book
Its a MUST to read book. If you want to improve your health, want to get the best of your body, read this book. It will help you learn about your body type, and "sadhanaas"(i.e. routines, food, etc) accordingly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forced to enter a one-line summary of my review
As far as I'm aware, there are only 2 books in existence that are vegetarian ayurvedic cookbooks--this one & "The Healing Cuisine" by Harish Johari; and i most highly recommend them both.(Ido no recommend "the ayurvedic cookbook" by Morningstar... it isnot veggie & really just a disappointment in terms of ingredients &the recipes).Tiwari is a very nice compliment to Dr. Lad's"Ayurveda: the science of self-healing", which is *the*definitive modern introduction to ayurveda.Tiwari's perspective is muchmore cosmic, poetic, and much about vibrational healing, cognitive memoryand DNA alignment. As one reviewer noted, she makes reference to Hinduism& the more complex aspects of the mechanics of ayurvedic energeticsthat, even to those relatively familiar, will feel like walking thru mud...Visual representations & diagrams would be helpful, which this book isessential devoid of.That is my only complaint.the text could certainlybe edited down to make room for more visuals. This is a complete guide forsomeone dedicated to an ayurvedic lifestyle--with charts covering theenergetics & qualities of just about every food and their vibrationalalignment with the body types, and daily & seasonal menus for the bodytypes, all 10 of them. There is, among many things, a section on foodsadhanas, or the ritualization of the nourishment process (food prep, cooking & eating). There are listings of ingredients & there's aglossary in the back of the more uncommon ingredients. She does not givemuch treatment to yoga asanas & pranayama, though there is treatment ofdaily routines. Now, unlike Johari, the recipes are all explicitly codedwith respect to the 10 body types & the 4 seasons (i.e., which bodytypes the recipes will help to balance & the season(s) in which theyshould be used)... A rather in-depth practical working guide to ayurvediccooking. This along with Dr. Lad, and you're doing good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Soaps, Shampoos, Perfumes & Splashes You Can Make At Home"
This beautiful, slim book is split into two parts:1-0 out of 5 stars sure are a lot of soap books
This is just another book that was written to cash in on the current DIY craze in toiletries and bath products. The author is not much of a soapmaker, and I ended up selling my copy to a used bookstore within 6 months of ordering it.The book is beautiful to behold, while being a pain to actually use due to the format and size, but is essentially useless next to the few books that actually impart info which empowers crafters to make ingredients decisions because they've learned something.Read Cavitch if you want to learn something.2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a Beginner...
This was my first book that I bought on soap making and I really wished I had read the reviews first, before I purchased this book. I should have known something was not right when she didn't have any pictures of her finished soaps with her recipes. Could it be because they don't come out right, so she has none to show? I have attemtped to make two of her recipes so far. The Cinnamon Ginger,pg. 71; which came out a dark, ugly, smelley, mess. My second attempt was her Soothing Honey Vanilla Soap, pg. 73. What a fiasco that turned out to be.She neglects to tell you that when you add the 6 ounces of melted beeswax to the oils that are at 100F degrees(as instructed by her Basic Vegetable Soap), the beeswax will immediately solidify again and float on top. So, now I had to re-melt everything to a temperature around 150F to get the Beeswax to stay melted and blend into the oils. And of course, my Lye was already at 100F, waiting to be added to the oils. I see now why she has the section of water baths to regulate your Lye/Oil tempertures. You are going to need them.Anyhow, in order for the beeswax to stay liquid, I had to keep the temperature around 150F.And now I wasn't sure which temperature my lye should be. She also neglected to warn you that honey can cause your batch to separate, that happened to me also, when I added the warmed honey. I have serious doubts that my soap will turn out ok, it is in the mold now, but it did not look good when I poured it. And, I also just found out, after reading on the Internet, that you should not add more than 1.5% beeswax to a batch, otherwise you will have problems keeping the batch at a liquid state. The other reason is because of Beewax's hardening properties. Since it makes a soap hard, too much is not good, not unless you have a jack-hammer to slice it:). Well, her recipe called for 6oz of Beeswax, which is more than 13%, I am afraid I will end up with a brick in the morning. Again, this is the type of information she neglects to explain to you. Another important note is the use of Essential Oils in her reipes, e.g., again, her Soothing Vanilla Soap says to use 2 oz of Vanilla Essential Oil. I am not sure who her supplier is, but I couldn't find pure Vanilla Essential Oil for under $194.00, for 2 ozs, and that was for Vanilla Absolute. I am so glad now, that I used Fragrance Oil instead. I don't have 200.00 to throw away, while I try to figure her recipes out. Again, this is book is truly lacking in information. I am sure an experienced soaper would have known these things, but than, I think an experienced soaper would have read this recipe, laughed and tossed it aside. And yes, how much lye do you need for the Lemon Lime Coconut Hair Bar on pg. 91, anyway? That's right, somehow the editor neglected to add it. Hopefully, once I become more experienced, I can use some of her recipes, but for now, I think I will stay with the Internet, so I can learn.Buyers beware, is all I have left to say about this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you so much
This book is not for the folks who want to just make Blends.
3-0 out of 5 stars Scientific Aromatherapy
This book continues from where a lot of books on aromatherapy left out. For those of us who are curious about how essential oils actually work, this book provides all the scientific principles. Unlike a lot of other books which merely tell us what the function of the oils are, this book not only goes in depth into the mechanics of aromatherapy, it also provides some revolutionary ideas on the use of essential oils. For practitioners with a science background, this book provides plenty of convincing and credible reasons for the use of aromatherapy in the treatment of various ailments.
2-0 out of 5 stars Medical Aromatherapy
Compared to innumerable other excellent books on the subject aromatherapy, Schnaubelt's book comes up distinctly short on helpful data. For the book to be truly helpful, one must be experienced in the use of oils, and if experienced, the book is all-bar-useless given the dearth of detailed information. It's a snapshot only and, therefore, not useful as a book of reference. Not recommended I'm afraid. ...
