5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
When I first obtained this book, I read it cover to cover to learn what they didn't teach me in massage school.I now keep it in my office and use it as a reference for helping my clients understand their health conditions. It is easy to understand and gives many alternative healing methods for conditions not discussed in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for National Certification exam
The pathology guide was concise and much needed in studying for the national certification exam for massage.By studying this book, I found out that there was some stuff I didn't learn in massage school but needed for the national exam. Who would have known?
1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware- incorrect information
All you have to do is look at the referances the author sited for this book to be scared by it- few and unreliable. Please note that there are sections in here that are absolutely incorrect. If you just want to pass National cert. this is a great book. But if you honor your proffession and wish to know pathology - not just what National Cert asks you (often incorrectly).... Look more. Please respect yourself and your client, and buy a book with complete and correct information ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read prescription..
...from a very wise doctor.Gathering readers around her kitchen table, Dr. Remen takes an indirect but inspiring approach to those of us who sometimes prefer to avoid the doctor's office.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational
I read this book shortly after my daughter was born 14 weeks (approx. 100 days) premature last April. The stories Dr. Remen recounts in her books were very inspirational and helped my husband and me to be there for our daughter during her 3 month stay in the NICU. I found it hard, on some days, to cope with my daughter's condition as it rollercoastered from not so bad to absolutely horrifying and reading the stories really helped put perspective in what we were going through. I honestly don't think I would've survived being a NICU mom without having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Those Searching for Something
I really enjoyed this book and first read it in 1999 when I was having my "quarter life" crisis. After having two babies back to back and mourning my loss of identity, I found myself re-reading the book. The stories still comforted me and were still relevant 6 years later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every MT who wants to move beyond Swedish massage should read this
This was the book that convinced me that I could indeed so something more interesting with an LMT license than just "slapping bodies" at a spa. It opened my eyes to a whole range of new possibilities and confirmed ideas and approaches I had suspected but not articulated yet. Excellent articulation of intelligent, sophisticated and sensitive modes of touch and therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best service, Best Price, Best information!
The information in this book along with the set of DVD's helped me pass my Nationals and focus my career path towards becoming a deep tissue/sports therapist. Art has a great way of presenting the material in a clear, precise manner. This is a must have for all bodywork professionals.

Why their way is the best way.I suggest you read What your doctor Won't Tell You. This is a gutsy non self-serving and tell all book that will help you get through our terrible health system

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, well researched, and well written
A fantstic read for everyone- patients and doctors alike!

1-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Inclusive and Wrong!!
This major effort seems to have touched all the bases. It leaves virtually no possible cause of medical errors unexamined. It does, however, seem to employ its excellence in describing gripping case studies as a distraction much of the time, often leading one's attention away from the root causes it seems to prefer not to pursue.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Buddhist Thought and Meditation!
This book and Sakyong Mipham's more recent "Ruling Your World," are permanent fixtures in my library.Sometimes Buddhist writings can be difficult to understand or relate to, but this author has a Western background and is able to communicate ideas in ways that are easy to identify with for people without a background in Buddhist thought. Our culture and the media encourage "monkey mind," and it's hard to gain control of inner thought processes in a world that constantly communicates "Buy More, Do More, Be More."This book offers a means of calming the internal turmoil and developing your mind to reach its potential.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book-very helpful
This book has been helpful for dealing with anxiety/depression.I'm not much into just meditating or even following Buddhist thinking, however, there is value in what I've learned from this book -- disciplining the mind and learning to keep the mind "present".This has helped me from worrying "too far ahead" or losing perspective of life by helping strengthen my mind.I highly recommend this book along with practicing some form of meditation if you struggle with anxiety or negative/worrying thoughts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to meditation
I think what sets this book apart from others of its kind is the unmatched clarity and simplicity of the language. The unique situation here is that Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, an accomplished and very learned Tibetan Buddhist teacher, grew up in the West and so speaks our language like a native. Because of this, he is able to speak to us in a way that most other equally accomplished Tibetan lamas are unable to. It's important to emphasize that meditation is best learned and practiced under the guidance of a living human being who has some experience with it - a book alone will not suffice. But, having said that, this book is definitely a good companion to have when beginning your journey. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Patient Watch Thyself And Thy Wallet!
I have nothing really against Jordan Rubin and this book. What it offers is common sense natural medicine. Nothing in this book is really a revelation or surprising. Most or if not all of the information can be found in other publications as is really nothing more than a compilation of other resources. The big issue here is Mr. Rubin's claims and other peoples claims of being "cured" or "healed" by chronic diseases. This is simply wrong, incorrect, inaccurate, and ignorant to say. Sure Mr. Rubin wants you to use his Garden Of Life products. They aren't cheap either. But to say that you will be "healed" or "cured"? These "products" just suppress the symptoms, which is great! But that should not make you stray away from seeing a medical doctor. Just because you used to have a diesase say like Diabetes does not mean it was cured. Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn Disease are the same way. They are always there. If people actually think that these diseases can be cured by Garden Of Life products they are gullible, sad, lost people. Using this system in conjunction with a doctor is the best way. I know some people despise doctors and are willing to shell out a lot of money for Garden Of Life products INSTEAD of seeing a doctor and that is just plain stupid. Wake up people.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Miracle"
Every library must have a copy of this book! Truely phenomenal and a life saver. Never before revealed facts. You have to read it-to believe it. A real education, based on reality and truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to it's title and then some.
Yes this is a marketing book, Mr. Rubin is a master marketer, and the products are expensive. I don't use his other products but Primal Defense is an incredible product that truly works for chronic disease where everything else fails. It's widely known among alternative medicine practitioners that Candida yeast overgrowth is a primary cause of many modern day diseases. About 100 million Americans are thought to be affected by this overgrowth, caused by antibiotics, drinking, bathing, and smimming in chlorinated water, eating a lot of sugar/starch, etc. It's also widely known now that Primal Defense will cure Candida. I have several friends who have cured this problem where everything else failed. Jordan didn't even mention Candida as far as I can remember, but he mentions bad bacteria numerous times saying that we should have 85% good bacteria in the gut, but that the average American has 15% good. I have become convinced that Candida was the cause of my severe ulcerative colitis. I've been on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet for a while, which was definately necessary, and eating a lot of coconut and coconut oil, a great yeast and other bad bacteria fighter. I still was not able to maintain remission without medication, and I still had symptoms of Candida (itchy anus and sinus among others). I took round after round of anti-candida herbs with minimal results. The Primal Defense therapy has cleared up all the problems that have been plaguing me, and I look and feel younger, and have abundant energy to go full steam 17 hours a day. I was paying about $55 for 180 capsules with free shipping, a 30 day supply. Now there is Primal Defense Ultra in 90 capsules available, which is twice as potent, so 3 capsules a day are taken. I buy this for about $35 a bottle with free shipping so that's my monthly expense now. Eventually I can taper down to a lower dosage when my digestive system is completely restored. I think this is a fair price for an intensive dosage supply, and though some of the other products are high priced, they are prescribed by many alternative health professionals because they work. Jordan also suggested the use of a shower filter, I found what I think is the best; Vitashower, which uses vitamin C to naturally dechlorinate water. Now I don't have to worry about my body absorbing about 8 glasses of water worth of chlorine with a typical hot shower. Jordan asked God for a cure for his Crohns disease and was answered. I asked God for a cure and it was shown me starting with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Northrup walks her talk!
I always look to see if an author stands in their truth. If they walk their talk.Dr. Christiane Northrup does.I have read all of her books, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause and now Mother-Daughter Wisdom. They all embody her path to well-being and her knowledge on the subject of women's health. In her book Mother-Daughter Wisdom, she shares her own life experiences from raising two daughters and her expertise as a medical doctor and relates them to health and wellness.I find this book to be a great tool and guide to help mothers raise empowered daughters and a model for a healthy mother-daughter relationship.I have three grown daugthers and would have loved to have had this book when they were growing up.I found out through much trial and error how to raise empowered daughters.Dr. Northrup is a pioneer in our time venturing into these unchartered waters of how mothers and daughters can have a balanced and loving relationship. She addresses the many challenges in our society today facing girls and gives suggestions on how to deal with them in a positive way.She talks about mothers caring and nurturing themselves in order to care for their daughter. This book is also areference book as Dr. Northrup covers from birth to adulthood for the many stages in a mother and daughter's life.Mothers, men, and women without children, would benefit by reading this book to connect with their own legacy with their mother or if raising a daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet
I will be forever grateful to the author for all the time she put into researching and writing this book. Because of my acidic problem, I have kidney stones. The medication did not help, and am now in Stage 4 kidney failure. With this alkaline diet, and low protein, I have been able to maintain my stage 4. If doctors would only make everyone more aware, we could follow the balanced diet and live healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an eye-opener!
The author describes the psyche of the food binger in such haunting and graphic terms that I feel that she is describing my own state of mind when I'm binging. She also describes the physical state of the body that causes the appetite to go out of control and whar to do about it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Was rather disappointed
Although I'm not a professional, I have read extensively in the area of health, nutrition, molecular biology, etc.If I am to believe the bulk of material written by researchers & scientists, doctors and naturopathic professionals, then I'd have to say that there is a fair amount of misinformation and not-quite-right "facts" presented in this book. After having read about a quarter of the book, I had come across so many items that don't quite agree with the latest generally accepted knowledge that I lost heart for finishing the book. While the overall presentation is basically valid and the lifestyle recommendations are good, I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who doesn't have the knowledge to sort out or at least question and verify which information is valid and what should be ignored. ... Health-care practitioners are a polarized lot: generally speaking, either they subscribe wholeheartedly to conventional medical treatments, or they eschew them altogether. This can be a great source of frustration to parents, whose natural response to a child's illness is a desire to do everything possible to make that child well. Written by a natural-medicine practitioner, a traditionally licensed doctor, and a pediatric nurse, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MVP- Most Valuable Publication for Parents.....Available!!!
This book was the most important parenting book that I have ever owned. It comforted me on late nights when my child (newborn-teens)might be up coughing, itching, or vomiting, etc.It gave me recommendations that I could do to help ease symptoms that my child was experiencing. While it is in no way a substitute for individual medical advise, it is an intelligent and practical guide. I often shared it with my pediatricians who were/are highly respected in their profession(and who were grateful for the varied information). It integrates Western and holistic medicine as well as wellness suggestions.I recommend it to EVERY parent that I know and I often give it as a shower gift or baby gift.

I received this book as a baby gift and practically wore it out in the first two years of my child's life. She's 11 years old now and we still use it.Because of the variety of remedies suggested, anyone can use this book and find one that's comfortable for their family. We've been able to avoid antibiotics completely with the advice from the book. It's now my baby gift of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Vitamins for a Healtier Life-The Proto-Wicca Herbal Primer
This paperback is filled with so many great vitamin facts. It's still the best book on utilizing vitamins and herbs ,for optimum daily health.Calling it the 'Vitamin Bible',was a bold and well-justified title.Nicholaus Culpepper compiled a massive tome on herbs, some three centuries eariler.Culpepper realized the benefits of using the herbs of our earth. He also realized the self-empowerment ,of fellow humans connecting with our natural world. He printed biblical passages inside,to leasen the concerns over any 'earth-magick', being revealed in his magnum opus.I think there are alot of neo-pagans out-there,who first used this book as a herbal primer .The original 'Vitamin Bible' was published in 1979.It's funny because many of the old hippies turned born-again christians reached-out to this book for 'healing wisdom'.It rode the high-tide,along side of the 'Dianetics-Scientology' books. It's still a great reference, for anyone looking for an introduction on herbs and vitamins, and a reawakening for all Western-world people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Health
I bought this book last week and it's excellent value for money. It has all the information about vitamins and herbs; it gives recommendations as well as warnings; advice about specific ailments, and so much more.I was surprised at the depth of information given. For example, my doctor told me that the herb known as horsetail helped halt osteoporosis when taken along with calcium. He also recommended boron.Nowhere else have I found confirmation of that information but this book mentions both. Unfortunately, you will not find horsetail listed in the index. That is the only complaint I have about the book that, occasionally, just occasionally, something was not listed in the index that was referred to in the text.If you care about your health, I recommend it.It's a no-nonsense book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend....
I am grateful for this qigong training course. I have tried a couple of other videos for qigong practice but this IS THE course to have if you are to have one. I'm using the techniques in concert with the treatment I have received for rheumatoid arthritis and have been pleasantly suprised by the results. This has been noted by the accupuncturist as well. Treatments in the western medicine are expensive and I am happy to note that I have been having far better results with the practice of qigong complimenting my treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Significant contribution to Qigong Education
Many of us cannot always get to places in California, the West Coast or the North Eastern US to meet and train with skilled Qigong Teachers. This kit addresses both personal graduated training and depth of style. Where it is most important is the ability to target the 100 days by a skilled weekly program where progress is obvious. Too many Qigong media detail exercises or procedures in books or video that show the "completed" forms and do not graduate these for new learners. Beginners like myself find this approach difficult to follow. Starting Qigong disciplines is like learning to ride a horse and has to be learned in stages. Ken Cohen has achieved this in a most inexpensive manner. Keep up the good work!.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Qigong has become a little fashionable of late, but the fact is that it is demonstrably effective for maintaining health, and there is a growing body of decent research indicating that it may also be a useful adjunctive treatment for an array of illnesses.

I found this book disappointing, and much prefer her previous book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, OK recipes
This book is interesting to read and great help in deciding what to eat to balance your vikrities (imbalances). You start out learning some Ayurvedic basics and then you can test yourself to find out what your dosha (constitution) is.Then you learn what foods and tastes agrivate or calm that dosha. It tells you a little bit about what the symptoms of an imbalance might be, but I got more descriptive information about that on the Internet. One reason I like this book is because me and my fiance are different constitutions, and this book tells us which foods will calm/ balance us both. There are simple instructions on most recipes that explain how to modify the recipe so that it suits a person with a different constitution. It also has codes for what seasons to eat what food, and every chapter or so has interesting blurbs about different foods and philosophies. That part I enjoy. And from my experience, Ayurveda WORKS.Fast and precisely.4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful!
This was one of the cookbooks used as reference for a six hour introductory workshop on Ayurveda that I attended. I had a chance to leaf through it, along with three other cookbooks, and this one seemed to be the most useful with a good background included on the basic concepts of ayurveda. I have USED it! As anyone who has a cookbook collection will recognize, this is the ultimate recommendation! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Tibetans
Being a yoga practitioner for 6 years now - I found this book to be an excellent resource for those who want a quick effective yoga workout - those who don't have the time to do an hour a day as I do. It is also good for when you travel as it requires no mats, blocks, blankets or any of the other props needed for most yoga regimes. Only thing I found disconcerting was the First Tibetan which made me naseuous. I have to assume this would subside with time.Well written and easy to follow. A simple but effective book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great exercises, more info would be helpful though
The exercises are great, I was recommended to buy this book and start doing them. Although I've been doing them for only two days, I already feel better. However, I have to say that the book is small, and, while the execution technique is properly explained, that is not enough. I also do qigong (beginner), and knew some other things that help, but it would have been nice if the book addressed to total beginners and explained what else is important. For example, do the same number of repetitions for each exercise. Why? Because the purpose of the tibetans is to synchronize the speed of chakras (hubs/vortexes of bodily energy), and to achieve that you have to do the same number. Even if you can do better for some exercises - don't - work up until you improve the weak ones and increase the number for all of them at the same time. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Depressed, overworked, or just feelin' old are common enough complaints. But when disparate symptoms such as joint pain, weight gain, and foggy-headedness join the ranks, it's time to think thyroid. As the "throttle" for the body's energy hormones, the thyroid affects every organ and cell; when it's in trouble, any variety of ailments--physical and mental--can occur. Trouble is, physicians are more likely to treat each symptom independently, with pill upon pill, rather than search for a root cause. Bolstered by 25 years of treating patients with low thyroid condition, husband-and-wife team Richard L. Shames, M.D., and Karilee H. Shames, R.N., Ph.D., ably explain the physical and emotional profiles of those diagnosed with the disease, why the proverbial deck is stacked against them, and how each patient can forge an effective path of treatment. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too many unsubstantiated statements
I stopped reading this book when it said that low self-esteem is a possible cause of thyroid antibodies. I'm a research psychologist and am very familiar with psychosomatic research, so I feel qualified to say that this is complete hooey. There are too many sections in this book that smack of unscientific thinking and unsubstantiated comment. I bought this book hoping for practical advice, and there is some of that. But there is also a fatal overdose of hippie stuff. A better book is Mary Solomon's What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thyroid Power is Helpful and Informative!
I found Thyroid Power to be interesting, informative and extremely helpful in assessing my low thyroid symptoms. This book offers useful tools for understanding how the thyroid impacts the functions of the body and gives suggestings for next steps for testing and treatment. I have family members with hypothyroid and never knew that this increased my own risk for developing a low thyroid.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another 12 step book
The author denies that your thyroid problem is your own fault, telling you you need to get involved with all the medical aspects and tell your doctor what you need.If your doctor doesn't listen to you then find another doctor.Monitor your TC levels through blood tests (if/when you can afford them). Then the last chapter is all about how much Thyroid therapy can help (as in 12 step programs) to discover that your stresses and life problems probably started the whole thing in the first place.Athough it is NOT YOUR fault. All the while insinuating that it, in fact, IS your fault.

Kill the parasites; remove the pollution and your immune system will do the rest.No poison chemotherapy; no destructive radiation; instead dignity, real answers and a turn around in rapid time. The "establishment" will hate this and fight it at every turn because accepting that poison water; poison food and parasites are causing the problem will have a very destructive effect on the profiteers du jour.Read it, do it and spread the word.

3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the money!
I'm an Advanced Practitioner of Massage Therapy and find this book VERY helpful. The Muscle Energy Techniques (M.E.T.s) are explained very thoroughly, and the accompanying drawings, and or pictures, are very helpful. While familiar with the M.E.T.s, having this book as a reference for all the upper body muscles, and their positioning for the best M.E.T. applications, is very rewarding. I'd recommend this book highly to anyone that has a basic understanding of the therapeutic aspects of massage and M.E.T.s.5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques - Vol. I
This is a really clearly written, concise book, with drawings and pictures of muscle positions, trigger points, etc.I bought the Jane Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Books before this one came out, and for the money wish I had bought the Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Tech. Book.Unless you are a Physician, who wants to inject the patient's trigger points with a saline solution, and then you better be very exact in your aim with the needle, I think the Clinical Application of Neurom. Tech. Book is a much more practical, useful, hands on,straight forward book that addresses all the trigger points, origins and insertions of the muscles in a very user friendly way.Until this book came out, Jane Travell's was the only great reference guide; but what patient really likes injections? Now this book surpasses Dr. Travells, in that all the material in it is useful and usable. Can't wait for Vol. II, Lower Body, to come out. ... We love this book! Lots of History, tons of Pictures and easy to follow text. The Reiki Energy Healing Center follows William Rand's style of Usui Reiki and Karuna Reiki. He lives the Reiki Way of Life.He continually is exploring Reiki and expanding it.The research he has done to get to know Mikao Usui is extraordinary. He is an inspiration!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn about Reiki, and this is the best place to begin!
"Spiritually Guided Life Energy--It is the God-Consciousness called Rei that guides the life energy called Ki in the practice we call Reiki. Therefore, Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life energy. This is a meaningful interpretation of the word Reiki. It more closely describes the experience most people have of it; Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom, rather than requiring the direction of the practitioner." page 1-3 of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for the Reiki Book Collector!
I found it such a good book that I went out to buy the cassette tapes that William Rand also has.
