Editorial Review

Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Heart Can Thrive on Positive Thoughts.
Dr. Oz, the heart wizard, is of Turkish descent and attempts to combine East and West traditions of healing during post-surgery.He is a heart surgeon located in New York City.First of all,he is searching for the elusive one universal healing endeavor. Some things we all need are recommended such as Love is a major healing force, as is religious faith in one God.He is of the opinion that modern medicine is not perfect.Nothing is perfect, not even beauty, he says.

The view that all types of medicine (western and eastern) working together makes sense. This book seems to encorage a balance between both.I enjoyed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars would not be 1st choice
Be careful if you take this book into the kitchen. It is printed on the cheapest of papers and tears and damages easily if it gets wet. The recipes are o.k.; the information is o.k., although conflicts with some information in her Coconut Diet book, but nothing very interesting or inspirational is shared.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Information
I bought this book to add juice to my diet as well as for a juice fast to detox. However, this book is missing important information on this topic. This book is very helpful for ADDING more juice to your diet, but it doesn't cover the necessary information on a strict juice diet commonly used for cleansing (detoxing), illness, and weight loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative...well laid out & easy to read
This book is EXCELLENT and one which I highly recommend. Yes...it's from 1992 but it all still stands true. The one thing about eating this type of food/juice and eating this way in general is that the underlying benefits and facts don't change. It certainly is not a fad but based on principles that stand the test of time. You can buy a book on this subject that is 50 years old or one that is brand new...they will say pretty much the same thing. This book is very well laid out tho' and is packed with a wealth of information. It points out the benefits of juicing and what each vegetable and fruit is good for...and how to drink them, along with some excellent recipes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WELL-RESEARCHED AND VERY HELPFUL
An excellent source of information. This book, published in 2003, is exhaustively researched, she cites medical and research studies involving hundreds and thousands of subjects, she covers the newest technologies and medications. The only thing missing from her book (because it was published a few years ago) is the very latest information about the potential dangers of Fosamax and the class-action lawsuits about the death of bone in the jaw that has caused people to have their jaws removed. She provides excellent suggestions for improving bone health, including exercise, dietary changes, supplements, and other ways to beat osteoporosis. She doesn't say that osteoporosis is a myth, she just debunks some of the myths surrounding this condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars +Very informative
This book was very informative and helped me decide to stop taking Actonol.Very eye-opening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You Are "Borderline"
This book was well-researched and very readable. I was able quite easily to verify the author's conclusions against the underlying medical literature she cites. Much of it is on the internet. The book provides a needed "balance" concerning all of the hype about osteoporosis.

Interest in and usage of herbal preparations as alternatives topharmaceuticals has exploded in recent years. Having a complete herbal referenceon hand is now absolutely necessary for doctors and other healers when a patientwants to add herbs--let's say St. John's wort--to his drug regimen. Should thepatient stop taking the Paxil he's been on for depression, and if so, how longmust he wait before he can start taking the St. Johns wort, and what's therecommended dosage?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for herbal medicines
Being a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine here in the US, I purchased the PDR for Herbal Medicines, 3rd ed. because I wanted to have access to western scientific resource material about the many (about 700) herbal medicinals covered in the volume. If you're looking for a good clinical or diagnostic manual for learning how to prescribe herbal medicinals, this book, by no means, articulates how to actually effectively prescribe herbal medicines properly. In order to prescribe herbal medicines safely and effectively, they must be applied according to a diagnostic pattern discrimination methodology that is suitable for each patient's constitution, clinical presentation and pathological disease situation. All that said, however, the book is an excellent resource for information about known scientific research, references to other source materials as well as pharmacological, chemical, toxicological cautions and contraindications for each herb covered in the volume. In fact, for this kind of information, the text is hard to beat. No one should use or prescribe a medicinal that they do not know the possible side effects and toxicity potential for that particular plant material. Although some naive individuals believe that all medicinal plants are safe to use, in fact, some herbal substances are toxic, contraindicated during pregnancy, should only be used for a short period of time, etc. This book has explicit information that is consistent with many of the best herbal medicine text books that I own. The book even has ratings by the well known German 'Commission E' board that approves herbal medicines in Europe for professional use. And if that isn't enough, many Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinals are also covered. There is also a section that covers many nutritional supplements on the market as well. All in all, I highly recommend the book to those who want detailed identification, dosage, usage, pharmacological and toxicological reference material for a large number of useful plant medicinal substances. This is a great book to fill in the blanks that many other reference texts simply do not cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough and useful reference
The PDR for Herbal Medicines is an excellent, thorough and scientific resource that will prove invaluable to physicians, nurse practitioners, naturopaths and others who use botanicals in the clinical setting. Also important for physicians who want to make sure that patients self-medicating with herbs are doing so safely. The various indexes make it easy to access vital facts rapidly.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good book with a mixed result

5-0 out of 5 stars Opens up a world of herbal options for optimal health
I like the way this book lists herbal remedies side by side with conventional medical treatments. It's useful to see your options laid out like that. I like the organization. It's easy to find what you need. I also like that one of the authors has an M.D. it's encouraging to see that a traditionally trained doctor sees the value of phytomedicinals. The book is organized by health problems. Under each heading, there is a listing of herbal as well as conventional remedies, as well as a paragraph describing how each remedy works. This method of organization makes much more sense than listing herbs alphabetically, especially for someone who's in a hurry to find something. I only just received the book from amazon.com, but I can already foresee that I will use it often. I only wish they had made the book bigger and printed it on nicer paper. Oh well...you can't have everything, I guess.

"Health," Dr. Andrew Weil writes, "is a dynamic and temporary state of equilibrium destined to break down as conditions change." In other words, there's no such thing as the type of health that allows you to feel equally great every day of your life. Instead, Weil suggests, your goal should be to improve your resilience to disease, and while you're at it, feel more joy and strength.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice presented systematically, some speculation too.
Overall, I think this is a very good book for someone who is trying to turn their health habits around, but is overwhelmed by all of the possibilities. It also a good track to run on for someone who wants to implement important life changes in an easy step-wise fashion. There is nothing fanatical about the recommendations and they can be easily implemented by almost anyone.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but a good place to start.
If there's one thing of critical significance that can be taken away from this book it is the importance of eating whole, nutritious foods free from chemicals and presevatives on a daily basis for the rest of your life. It means turning over a new leaf, making sacrifices and learning something new but if you are over 35 and need to improve your health this may just be the answer you're looking for (assuming from the outset you have no major health problems). While I found a few of Dr. Weil's suggestions to be out of my realm of practicality---fresh-cut flower arrangements every day, for instance----most of the other recommendations presented in the book are rather straight-forward and provide a simple strategy for getting back on the road to good eating and optimal health (like daliy walks, relaxed breathing and weekly breaks from news and current events). I had always loved foods like broccoli, ginger, garlic, sardines and olive oil so most of the dietary guidelines, for me,were easy to deploy. Dr. Weil instructs the reader to go to the pantry and throw away---that's right----throw away all of the bad, chemically-preserved foods in you pantry; canned soups, margerines, gravy mixes, bottled dressings, snacks, cakes, soft drinks, foods containing hydrogenated oils, aspartame, msg, dyes, etc. This is critical since it lays the foundation for good health in the coming weeks. Demanding that the reader abrubty cut off his supply of "comfort food" may

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book
As clinical and forensic psychologist I use this book in mypractice with my clients who have experienced a trauma and are suffering from PTSD.This book is an excellent tool to educate trauma survivors about the symptoms they are experiencing and gives step by step tools and lessons to help overcome the symptoms of PTSD.After one experiences a trauma the psychological symptoms that come afterwards, often times months afterwards, can make the person feel as if they are going crazy. This book helps the trauma victim understand the predictable symptoms, the reason they exist and what to do to cope and eventually overcome them. This book helps trauma victims move from victim to survivor.

5-0 out of 5 stars FInding One Self and Fulfilling a Dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bookaholic
Sarah Breathnach writes about the simple pleasures in life in such a way that it makes you want to try all the wonderful small joys she speaks about in the book. Even my husband picks it up and reads the daily messages. He comes out with a smile on his face with some kind of comment on the subject matter each day!

Dr. Northrup provides women with practical information about their bodies, stages of life and medical procedures. However, I was appalled by her bias against Western cultural heritage and Christianity. Her views on those topics were extremely unbalanced, with no acknowledgement of their positive contributions to culture and women. As a Catholic whose best teachers were strong-minded, compassionate religious sisters, I felt offended by her slur against nuns.I am aware that not everyone feels the same way about their religious upbringing, but I would expect an academic to strive for some balance in their research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
There are so many books out there on pregnancy and birth. Most of them discuss the physical/medical aspects and what to expect at those levels.I read a variety of books in preparation for birth and in my opinion this is THE book to read in order to prepare mentally for birth (which is no less important than understanding the medical aspects). When I first got this book, I started reading it and then stopped because I didn't feel like doing some of the more artsy exercises and I read over some other exercises without really thinking them through.Luckily, my husband took this book to our vacation to Costa Rica and started reading me select parts.Reading and discussing the exercises together made all the difference.I would highly recommend reading through this with someone close (preferably your partner or labor coach).Though this book is particularly helpful for someone who wants a drug-free birth, I think also women who plan to take an epidural can benefit from it since there is a lot of mental preparedness that can make labor easier while you're still at home or before you can get the epidural.I practiced the pain-coping exercises with the ice cube as suggested in the book and that made me feel well prepared. In the end, what helped the most was co-chanting which I never would have thought of if I hadn't read about it in this book.So I feel that it's helpful to have a myriad of techniques to cope since you don't know what'll help the most.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pam England is a gem! Great practical guide.
Good practical advice and excercises that can help prep you for the birthing process, whether you're going natural or assisted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to heal from a traumatic birthing experience? Then get this book!
If you're going to build your birthing library with only a handful of titles, make this one of them. I found it tremendously supportive, especially because I was considering a VBAC and the author's experience of a first "failed" vaginal birth hit home with me. Her honesty healed a huge loneliness that I had been experiencing with the disappointment surrounding my unplanned cesarean with my first birth. I hadn't expected to find a book that dealt first with my fears around childbirth, and then with my disappointment about how my first birth had gone. THIS BOOK IS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY, you won't regret it from that aspect alone!

I found this book inspirationally. Not because the author beat the odds in surviving a cancer considered "terminal" by all of his physicians, but because he did it by rationally setting out to explore all of his options and did not just let the "experts" tell him what to do.

Dr. Williams' book is a blow by blow record of how he guided his own survival in spite of his doctors and the constraints of the FDA in overcoming a glioblastoma. His program was well-researched and gives excellent suggestions for options in taking an active part in one's own survival.Should be read by all cancer patients, particularly those suffering with brain tumors. He also published an annual online update of the information contained in the book.

Now in its twenty sixth annual edition the PDR for Nonprescription Drugs and Dietary Supplements is a compendium of information on all of the drugs sold over the counter in the United States. The information on the drugs comes from the manufacturer, has been blessed by the manufacturer's medical department and is based on information officially filed with the FDA. 5-0 out of 5 stars If TFT isn't working for you, see someone who is an experienced TFT practitioner!
Thought Field Therapy is real, and it has worked for me, clearing old traumas, anger and sadness. It was quick, and very powerful. HOWEVER, my therapist, walked me through it. The first time was in her office. Years later, I was living in another state, and called her to see if we could work over the phone about something that came up. She walked me through TFT again, and WOW, stuff poured out, and cleared up.
4-0 out of 5 stars TFT is an easy, fast and effective way to address the psycho-emotional realm.
It can be very effective to help people who are stuck and seem to not heal because of psychological reasons. Often one session is enough to treat/cure a phobia for example! TFT is the main healing modality in use today to address emotional and spiritual issues. You'll find it is truly remarkable the way TFT combines Oriental Medicine (acupuncture points) and Body Centered Psychotherapy in one effective treatment. The other great thing is that it is possible and easy to treat oneself for a lot of conditions. Roger Callahan's system is composed of procedures that consist on tapping on certain acupuncture points that are connected with certain types of emotions. By tapping on these points, we are able to cleanse the emotional energetic charge that is connected with a particular situation or event that is the source of stress, fear, anxiety, pain and sorrow, anger, rage, and so on. So that at the end of the treatment we are able to be neutral and non-affected in front of this particular situation or event or while remembering anything traumatic that happened in the past. From this neutral place we can look at a traumatic situation and just say, 'yes it happened' and move on with our life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty interesting!
I am new to this kind of therapy - the book wasn't exactly what I'd thought it was going to be, guess I didn't bother to read all the reviews or other info about it before ordering. BUT it did bring about some change in my life. I would recommend it especially for people with the particular problems it tries to help resolve. I take acupuncture treatments and was looking for more of a health oriented book, this deals with exactly what the title states such as overcoming guilt. I liked it though because it made me consider more about how everything in our bodies are connected. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "They give you a book to read"
I keep this book on the shelf with my favorite books. I think of this as a wisdom book. It's the 'lost' book from Richard Bach's Illusions. I usually pick this up when there's something bothering me, or something big is going on in my life. Sometimes I open it up, and get nothing (or so I think at the time). Then, there are times when I open it up and amazed at what I find! For instance, I was trying to decide WHY I should go into a certain career. I was back and forth over "should I do it or not?!" -I picked up this book, and this is what I read:
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book.
What a great little book! Not too big, and not a lot of content, but very powerful and thought-provoking words. These "proverbs" are from the previous Bach book Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, which is also a book I highly recommend. Page after page, each with an idea or thought that is at once simple and logical in so many ways, yet very insightful and inspiring. Very nice indeed. The suede-like cover is a nice touch also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Messiah's Handbook:Reminders for the Advanced Soul
Was surprised with the book's size but it proved to be quite handy to carry with you.Anything I have read of Richard Bach I have enjoyed.Would recommend this book to anyone who would like quick "advice" or something to ponder on for one's own continued learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
I have searched long and hard for a reference book and this was a great resource.I have read many books on nutritional supplementation and have studied nutrition for many years. This book has a lot of good information in it.What I found though is you must continue to research and keep education yourself with supplemental information.I found another great resource on Inner Health that was very impressive at librarydepot.comIt contained a Nutrition Benefits Chart that is unlike anything on the market. It links nutritional support needed to many diseases/disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!
This is a book you will use. this is a book you will want your doctor to read, preferably own. It will take the person who is not familiar w/ many alternative care methods and supplements and "baby step" you you through them w/out dumbing anything down or being tedious.
