3-0 out of 5 stars Other than the actual "Ferberizing", great info
I am a mother of 6 month old twins who recently *both* were waking every 1 to 2 hours on some nights.I read this book after trying No-Cry Sleep Solution for a month with lots of improvment on everything *except* the number of night-wakings.The girls fell asleep faster, easier, and with less help - but kept waking up, dropping only about one night-waking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - REALLY helped
Our two older kids basically didn't fall asleep on their own for a long time, as well as woke up quite frequently at nights. We were big followers of Sears method. I think, our nervous system was quite drained as a result of bad and insufficient sleep.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the fourth night, it really seems to be working!
I think now, after trying the Ferber method, that a baby trying to fall asleep is just like a curious kitten that climbed up a tree and got herself stuck.I thought that my baby was always crying for us, but really she was crying for our help so she could fall back asleep. We were always rescuing our little kitten from that tall tree branch by picking her up out of the tree, without teaching her how to climb down on her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!
I swear by this book, the techniques work like magic, and it made me feel okay about letting my baby sleep in the swing.I would not only recommend this book to all new parents, I would say that it is absolutely a requirement to read if you have a new baby or will soon.Don't have a baby without it!It's also a very interesting read.I absolutely loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The single most valuable purchase for our baby!
I started reading this book when my newborn was about 2 weeks old and I only wish I had read it before she was born because as soon as I started implementing the techniques that Dr. Karp suggests for calming babies, I found I was able to comfort my crying baby almost instantly.I plan to purchase this book for every expectant mom I know - its that good, and honestly, it may be the best gift any parent could receive!
5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!
It may sound a bit melodramatic but if this book didn't save my life it sure made it a zillion times better.Since my baby's arrival there is the BTB and the ATB -the "Before The Book" and the "After The Book". The difference has been like night and day...my newborn daughter used to cry and scream for what seemed hours and hours and got so upset she couldn't (and I couldn't help her to) find her way to calmness, after trying nearly everything we would end up crying together... I felt so scared and anxious whenever her fussy time would start...but after reading this book and aplying the techniques for the 5 S's well... I am scared no more. I feel truly empowered. These methods 1. the snug swaddling, 2. the white noise, 3. the swaying, 4. the sucking; they all work -if performed correctly. Now when my baby cries, it's no longer a marathon cry...we apply the layers of soothing and she is back to her happy calm self in no time, and if sleeping, she sleeps at least twice as long as before. I am forever grateful to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
Has a lot of great info if you are taking the BRPT exam.As for the person who gave this a 1 star rating, shame on you.Just because the vendor messed up on your order, doesn't mean the book is bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good sleeping plan
This is the best book I have read yet!And it works.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book on insomnia, causes, and treatments. It covers a lot more material then another book I've read, "Say Goodnight to Insomnia", Jacobs. However, I do have one gripe with Hauri's instructions for stimulus control therapy. He says it's ok to stay in bed and read or watch TV until you get sleepy, as long as you don't have conditioned insomnia (i.e., the bed/bedroom causes you to become anxious and awake). Jacobs recommends that you don't use the bed for anything other than sleep or sex. That means no reading in bed, or watching TV in bed in order to get to sleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some surprising [but effective] ideas for better sleep.
This is an excellent book that covers a broad range of reasons, and subsequent treatments, for insomnia. If read straight through, I imagine this book would be a bit cumbersome since it is so thorough. I found the technical information about sleep (in the introduction, but also scattered throughout various chapters where it applies) to be fascinating. But it is easy to skip to the parts that only concern you.

4-0 out of 5 stars just passed the boaeds
Used this and Dr. Kilkenny text and passed the boards on the first try. Great resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars BOTH BOOKS VERY HELPFUL, WELL WORTH THE COST
I AGREE THAT THERE WERE SOME MINOR ERRORS BUT OVERALL A WORTHWILE TEXT. THERE ARE NOT MANY OTHER SOURCES THAT ONE CAN REVIEW TO GET A SAMPLE OF WHAT WILL BE ON THE BOARDS.THE EPOCHS WERE GOOD EXAMPLES OF WHAT WILL BE FOUND ON THE TEST. THE AUTHOR SHOULD PUT OUT SEVERAL MORE EDITIONS OF THE WORKBOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think
This book gives the reader an excellant overview of the subject matter. To my eye there are some errors but they do not reduce the quality to any significant degree. The questions are very deverse. I especially like the sample epochs. As a trained tech I think that this book is very helpful for the boards. It compliments the Fundamentals text well. It could be made better but it is not as near as costly as any of the APT materials. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am sleeping again, despite the neighbors.Itworks.
Two years ago I got a new neighbor whose bass often cuts through my house. My blood pressure would rise. Panic attacks started. No one cared. I lived inconstant fear that the music was going to come on. I found this cd by accident and it changed my life. The power of suggestion is amazing."You will hear the noise but it will not bother you.", You will wake up feeling rested and relaxed..." Now I am breathing, relaxing, sleeping, and living again. Janet has a very pleasing and soothing voice. I will probably wear out this cd. Thank you Janet.
5-0 out of 5 stars By FAR, the best product I've ever used
I have tried a dozen different programs to help with my sleep issues and this is BY FAR the best hypnosis program I have ever used. Janet's voice is soothing and her autosuggestions are very effective. Since starting this program I have regained restful, rejuvenating sleep and I feel great. It has helped me in all facets of my life and I will continue using it as a relaxation CD. I encourage anyone who has problems sleeping to buy this product immediately!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleeping better
I have recently purchased Hypnosis to Help You Sleep Deeply by Janet I. Decker, C.HT.This is my second purchase in Decker's set of Hypnotic Empowerment Series.I had such success with her Hypnosis for Memory and Recall, I decided to try this one.I've had trouble sleeping well for years and can't remember the last time of waking up in the morning with that refreshed and really rested feeling.I have trouble going to sleep, wake up several times a night, and have a hard time getting up in the morning. This Hypnosis to Help You Sleep Deeply CD is extremely relaxing. It's an interesting experience of deep relaxation, concentration on relaxed breathing, and hearing Janet Decker's calm voice of affirmations of sleeping better. At the end of the session, you have the option of coming back up to a state to continue with your day's tasks, but refreshed, or, drifting off to sleep. It can also be used to help you sleep better if you work at night and have to sleep during the day (I've been there before too). What's also good about this Hypnosis is that you are deeply relaxed and sort of tranced, but fully aware of your surroundings and can respond to any emergencies or situation that needs your full attention. So, it feels safe.Last night, on listening to the CD, I did drift off into a pleasant sleep but the listening to the CD itself was extremely pleasant also.Anyone out there who needs to relax, this one's for you!

Editorial Review

Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your currentstation in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled"Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsyoffice workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (whichmay reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knowshow to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion isthat most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it inslowly and then sleep on it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read...some useful advice for the peak performer!
I picked up this book in a used bookstore, again instinctively, after having read Veronique's The Art of Doing Nothing & William Anthony's The Art of Napping. Although the book does not offer really cutting-edge stuff, I find it fascinating, as it offers some useful advice for the peak performer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Power Sleep by Maas
A main thesis of the work is that sleep is critical to peak
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a waste of money but not what I expected
I liked this book in a lot of ways, but when it ended, I was dissappointed. There is worthwhile information about sleep and interesting quotations from famous people about sleep but there seemed to be a lot of filler in this book. The book throws out many statistics but rarely explains how these stastics were obtained.I also thought the book contained too many horror stories about deaths related to people falling asleep while operating heavy machinery etc.,.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book.I ordered this when I needed tips on how to help my son sleep.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only good for stay at home moms
This book has a strong bias toward co-sleeping and nursing for several years. It does not have any tips for increasing sleep for a working mom, and it offers no help to anyone that does not want to share a bed with their 3 year old.

2-0 out of 5 stars For attachment parents only
I bought this book in a sleep-deprived haze when my baby was waking every two hours during the night.Instead of offering advice, strategies, or even sympathy, I was told that this sleep-deprivation is "nightime parenting" and that I should enjoy my baby while he is small and needy. The attachment parenting spin on this book is so strong that it is virtually useless to anyone who does not follow this philosophy. I sent this book off to Goodwill.I much prefer the book by Mark Weisbluth, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.Weisbluth explains baby sleep, at what ages certain naps develop, and most importantly, lays out various strategies for getting your child to sleep better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Insomnia Answer.......finally one that works
I have had insomnia for the past twelve years trying every med for insomnia on the market. After reading The Insomnia Answer I was motivated to try sleep restriction therapy and it works and I sleep better than I have in many years and don't wake-up drowsy or feel at all drug-dependent.A brilliant and very useful book for anyone suffering from sleep deprivation.

5-0 out of 5 stars catching the wave works
These authors have found the right metaphor for me. Suffering from occasional bouts of sleeplessness after a stressful day at work, I have found that rereading the last chapter before bed, or in the middle of the night, eases me into a relaxed rhythmic state where I trust I'll slip into sleep--if not this wave, the next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough in Sleep Books!
Having read many many many of the sleep books, this one is completely different for 2 reasons.First it is remarkably well written.Helps you actually understand what sleep is and how it works for you in an easy to read style.Second, the sleep restriction therapy actually works. Not a bunch of babble, but a straightforward approach that forces you back to good sleep.I must say its not much fun, but if you do suffer from insomnia and want to get a life, this is the book. ... Editorial Review

"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Ambient sounds terrible voice and accent
I purchased this CD based on the other good reviews. I however could not relax due to the accent and voice of the hypnotheripist. I was amazed that a voice as grating as this one was used on this type of CD. For me it was a total waste of money. If you are sensitive to such issues I suggest you try a different CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sleep I've had in years
I have had difficulty sleeping for about two years.I have used this CD for 10 days now and I have had wonderful sleep for each one of them.I listened to it for three nights straight.I didn't need it the fourth night. One night I did wake up and I used it to go back to sleep. I wish I had tried hypnosis sooner.
3-0 out of 5 stars It could have had 5 stars
There are two kinds of insomnia. The first is the one everyone knows about, which is trouble falling sleep. The second kind of insomnia is trouble staying asleep. This means waking in the night or waking up early.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing AND my baby is THRIVING
My baby now sleeps 12-13 hours a night. This book was instrumental in this process. She LOVES sleep and needs it. She now knows how to self-soothe. Anyone who says their baby won't thrive with a 4-hour feeding schedule is being a bit dramatic. This is a very simple concept, though I agree that with breastfeeding it is difficult to measure how much the baby is eating, so pumping is necessary. If you feel that this takes time from your baby breastfeeding directly from you, then it may not be the right book for you. For me, the tradeoff with pumping was worth her sleeping 12 hours through the night for the past 5 months (she's 8 months now). She wakes up happy and not crying. She naps an hour after she wakes up. What more could you ask for? Is this selfish?

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Valuable Guidance
Well worth the few hours it takes to read. One of the things that I liked best about this book is its brevity and well organized format. After the foreward and an introductory chapter, the heart of the book is divided into three chapters based on the first 12 weeks of a baby's life as the title implies.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusting.....
This book is horrendous! Developmentally speaking, babies need to eat more than 4 times per day, this includes night feedings. Expecting your baby to suffer just so you can get some sleep is purely selfish. You shouldn't have had a baby in the first place if sleep is SOOOOO important to you that you'd be a neglectful parent. Sleeping through the night isn't worth putting your baby through this misery!

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
This book is incredible!I was beginning to think that sleeping poorly was a result of getting older(I am in my 30s).Now I know that you can learn to be a good sleeper just like you learn other things!Read it and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rescue remedy for sleep
These wonderful tecniques in the book were invaluable these last couple of weeks. My youngest son has been very ill with a virus that completely disturbed his sleeping. We thought it would change, but didn't, so I taught him some of the Mini-moves in the book and he was able to relax and finally get the much needed rest he needed for healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
As a very tired single mother of two, I have been using this method for a few years. It changed my relationship with sleep. Recently my 8 year old had a very painful infection and was unable to sleep. I did some of the techniques with her as she tried to relax. It worked! We both got a decent nights sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars YogaNap Works!
I love this book!A friend recommended it to me, because of mystressful schedule, and it has helped me so much.I started incorporating a couple of Kristen's exercises in my day and the tension in my neck is starting to go away.It is amazing how I feel immediate benefits when I stop running around for ONE minute and simply bend over and breathe.I do yoga on a regular basis, but these exercises have helped me to blend more peace and relaxation into my work day.I find myself doing half dog on my desk, twisting when I get in my car, and taking slow beautiful breaths in traffic. These fun and simple exercises really help me go through my day with more awareness and joy.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Easy As Pie...
I've come to the realization that with age and work comes stress...mind-numbing, balled-up-muscles, backaches, headaches...stress. Desperate to find relief in any fashion I came across "YogaNap." The author, Kirsten Rentz, has done a great job at explaining positions in true "Yoga for Idiots" fashion (aka: simply). The illustrations (softly done in blues, and greens) go one step further in making the whole process as easy as pie (mmmmm, pie). Anyway, the poses are a perfect way to end a long (mind-numbing, balled-up-muscles, backaches, headaches) stressful kind of day. Thanks Kirsten!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy yoga rest
The perfect gift for the busy professional who needs to slow down, the stressed-out student, and every person who has avoided yoga due to fear of hot rooms and sore muscles, YogaNap is a fun and unintimidating introduction to the oft-ignored practice of restorative yoga.

5-0 out of 5 stars serenity prayer for sleep-deprived parents
This book is a great resource for parents who are struggling to get their kids to sleep each night. The advice is pratical, specific and can be customized to fit each family. I like the anecdotal writing style and I love Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's tone--she challenges parents to become more present to their children while never making us feel bad about where we're at. She consistently writes with humility, compassion, candor and grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Practical Resource to Help Families Sleep!
I highly recommend this book to parents with children of all ages! It's truly transformed our nights (and days!) from one of bedtime and wake up battles to one where peace prevails most of the day and bedtime has become a positive time to connect:)The book is written in a style that is easy, quick, and enjoyable to read and is full of practical tips, assessments, and advice.I'm a Mom of two active school-age boys and an infant son and have found this book EXTREMELY helpful and practical for all 3 of them (and surprisingly me, too!).Little did I know that my 8-year-old who was arguing through his day, melting down through homework and dinner, yet seemed full of energy at night-was actually so exhausted from the school, sport, and activity schedules we were keeping that he was barely functioning! With the step-wise, practical, witty advice in this book, I was able to make some minor changes in our routines and adjust a few decisions which have yielded GREAT results in a short time. He's much happier throughout the day because he's sleeping better and more regularly. The author guides us to determine what works best for our own family, then shows us HOW to implement her step-wise approach to sleep, and to avoid undermining our own efforts with decisions we make during the day! There's a great section detailing how different temperament traits affect sleep-a MUST READ for parents of spirited children. It also provided great recommendations for helping our infant son to sleep without watching a timer while he cried!Plus sections on time changes, vacations, holidays... Finally, a truly definitive resource on helping families to sleep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleepless in America
I have been working with young children and their families for over 20 years and am pleased that there is finally a book that clearly illustrates the link between childrens misbehavior and the lack of sleep. Our kids are crying out for more rest but often our busy lives keep us from noticing these behaviors. I have read every other book this author has written and would read more if she had another. She gives us time tested strategies and tools, easy and simply explained ideas to implement a positive sleep environment all day long. She shares humorous and real life stories from the hundreds of parents she has worked with. Filling in the sleep chart has been extremely insightful. I also found the red zone/green zone information helpful in quickly assessing all family members levels of tension. I am so glad someone finally has written a friendly, helpful, humorous book on sleep that doesn't encourage kids crying it out or abandoning our young children at night. Instead, she gives us tools to use all day long to make nap time and bedtime rewarding and peaceful for everyone. Parents will read this book and know they are doing a great job! ... Read more
