4-0 out of 5 stars A neurologist's opinion of Coping with Parkinson's Disease
I am a neurologist who cares for people with Parkinson's disease. Eric Morgan has written a thought-provoking book that educated me and that I would recommend to many of my patients. His observation that coping with the disease requires both optimal medical treatment and optimal self-care is particularly valuable. He realizes that with both of these he can not completely control his illness but can greatly improve the quality of his daily life. My only hesitation in recommending this book to those with Parkinson's disease is that his illness has been a particularly trying one, and many patients with Parkinson's do not experience the complications and tribulations that he describes. I would not want patients with mild Parkinson's to be discouraged by his experiences. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The story of a miracle drug
This is the story of the miracle medicine deprenyl (eldepryl), an inhibitor of the enzyme Monoamine Oxidase B. The book recounts how it was developed, the people that developed it and popularised it, the amazing benefits it provides to sufferers of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, its preventive action against these, and its by now unquestioned role in extending lifespan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting history and research in an easy-to-read format
My father has Parkinson's disease. This book gave me a lot of useful information about Deprenyl's progress through the years. It is written in an interesting format that draws your interest.I could relate to the bookwith symptoms and progression. It outlines the history-who and why-ofDeprenyl and is detailed with case studies and testimonials. It even makesme think that I may explore taking Deprenyl myself when I am older forprevention of degenerative progress of aging.Read the book cover tocover--if you skip around many of the ironic and interesting details willbe lost. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Gray New World
Oliver Sacks has created a lump of delight in his book, The Island of the Colorblind. After having a sincere interest in the topic of colorblind people, Sacks travels to Micronesia to visit with and better understand the victims of achromatopsia (a form of colorblindness) on the island. He takes with him a man by the name of Knut, who also has achromatopsia. They journey all over Micronesia, encountering numerous people living with the disease and thriving. They perform tests to assess the magnitude of the disease on the islands. Sunglasses and visors are passed out to the inhabitants to help them live their lives to the fullest. In the end, Sacks states that though the achromatopes of Micronesia are on a physical island, they also belong to the emotional island of achromatopes everywhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars Science, Medicine, and Art, skillfully blended
The Island of the Colorblind provides what Sacks readers expect: serious neurological cases, a humane appreciation for the patient, and an artistic sensitivity. We learn about several societies where the gene for colorblindness has become established and how that has affected the cultures of the people.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is a Worthy Read
Another brilliant book By Dr. Oliver Sacks, this time about a community of color-blinds on a tiny island in the Pacific called Pingelap. He revels in this book that he has a fascination for Islands and when opportunity comes he packs off for this tiny island with two of his friends. One of his friends is from Norway (a psychologist) and himself achromatopic (completely color blind).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title doesn't quite tell it all.
I am understandably prejudiced. This lovely, and very personal book, is by my father about the 17 years he and my mother soldiered through her years with Parkinson's disease with humor and tenderness. As his own health declined, through this book he provided us with a wonderful and insightful "manual" in dealing with chronic disease.Edwin Hayden was a Christian, a scholar, a theologian and a gentleman. We miss him.Anyone who reads the book will know why. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Answered questions about my mother's symptoms
I have a background in medical chemistry and microbiology and have worked in the health care field. My mother has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.I have read other books about Parkinson's but they were more for the lay person and didn't give me the kind of information I was wanting to understand my mother's symptoms.I like the format of the book.It has an excellent reference list at the end of the book.It would be helpful for lay readers if the book had a glossary of medical terms, as some other books on the subject provide for readers. This is the book that any caregiver needs to read to have a deeper understanding how their loved ones disease will progress, without the "sugar coating" I was given by my mother's doctor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Written for Doctors
This is a well formatted, highly technical book. That is what surprised me.This book is not written for the layman.DO NOT purchase this book unless you are well-versed in chemistry and can follow a highly technicalmedical book. I was impressed by "Parkinson's Disease: Questions andAnswers" but it took some intense reading for me to be able to pullgood information out of it. This is a must-buy for your primary carephysician if they aren't well versed in Parkinson's disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Technical, but worthwhile
This book is written with a great deal of research and medical substance. If you are just learning about Parkinson's, this is not the book to begin with.If you have some knowledge and want specifics, this is a good book. It is a nice book to pick up and read parts at a time.Information iscandid and thorough. ... Read more
