5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK OF CURES,NUTRITION, AND HEALING FOODS
Five HEALTHFUL Stars!! In this great compendium Jerry Baker's expert nutrition team, Karen Cicero and Colleen Pierre, shows that many foods can not only taste good and be the source of healthful nutrients, but have healing powers that many of us may not be aware of and can apply in specific cases of need. In an age when we hear so many individual news stories on the benefits of a particular food, it's hard to remember them over time. Now we have one place to look for many common foods available to us all that pack a nutritional punch. Not exhaustive to be sure, but a great reference book nonetheless that outlines common foods that it claims can fight cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoperosis, memory loss, etc. And the benefitcited in most of the listed foods is the #1 killer in the US: heartdisease.

Editorial Review

Why take hormones and supplements to ward off osteoporosis--the bone-thinning disease that many postmenopausal women worry about--when you can get calcium and other nutrients needed for healthy bones from eating the right foods? That's the message from Annemarie Colbin, a food therapist who authored a previous book, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally something I can believe and follow
I am thrilled to discover this book by Annemarie Colbin about such an important issue for me and many other women of my generation.I have a heart problem so when my Kaiser physician told me I should take Fosamax for my osteoporosis I decided there must be another way. When you take Fosamax, it sends calcium to your bones. But, your heart needs calcium too.So, how do you know if you are doing more damage to your heart and other tissues if you take this drug? What's more important - my heart or my skeleton.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Advise for Strong Bones
Annemarie Colbin has writen a wonderful, concise and palatable manual for understanding the relationship between lifestyle and bone health. She systematically details the causes of bone deterioration and establishes a course of action to counteract its progression.I would recommend this book to anyone, practitioner or patient, who either has a family history of osteoporosis or will be older tomorrow than they are today.I guess that includes us all.Great job Annemarie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those who care about their health
As usual, Annemarie Colbin's voice of reason brings hope to a field of health awareness where hype and misinformation dominate. This book is fascinating and, like her other books, forces one to THINK about the thingswe put into our bodies every day.The approach she proposes isunconventional to most Americans but please don't dismiss it.Remember, osteoporosis is thriving in the countries (like ours) where dairy productsare freely consumed by the majority.Give this book a read and you won'tbe sorry! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Recommended Book, for Everyone
This should be required reading for all parents. They would understand the ramifications of nutrition and activity on their children.Maybe they'd stop the stupidity of giving their children excess amounts of soda pop.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
Since I have Osteoporosis fairly early in life, I found this book informative and very helpful. Not only is there good general information about Osteoporosis, with current medications and alternative treatments; but recipes, a workout with weights and yoga routine with easy to follow instructions and pictures. He offers an holistic approach to health care management.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerously misleading - waste of money
If I could have rated this without a star I would have I have osteoporosis, and have done extensive research on diets for bone health - which can ultimately be summarized as acidic vs. alkaline foods. This book contains no list of foods specific pH levels for a variety of foods - I bought it thinking it would SURELY contain this extremely important!! NO IT DOES NOT and there is no clinical nutritionist involved either that I could find.So you are taking information from someone that does not have an intimate knowledge of nutrition to begin with!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaches! Let women be women
I am a male coach of female soccer players.I would go so far as to say that the depth of knowledge contained in this book is beyond that which many coaches of team sports would search for. However, coaches who are interested in getting the best from their athletes, rather than having athletes fit their own personal coaching agendas, will find in these pages essential truths that will illuminate their coaching. There has been a strong social tendency for women's understanding of ability and success to be measured by male standards (the sense of athletic body image in connection with performance, which is dealt with in detail, is only one of them driven by this perspective), and this book is thankfully one which reminds us that women are not only entitled to be judged as women, but need and deserve to be so.As coaches, and certainly as male coaches, we cannot help our female athletes realise their potential until we understand them better and give them credit for being who they are, and encourage them to be who they are. This book helps us do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Female Athletes
Books which honestly deal with the pressures and concerns of female athletes are rare, and this one should be required reading for every active woman from twelve to sixty. There is lots of information out there on how to be thin but far less on how to be fit. Otis and Goldingay are among the very few to acknowledge that they are not one and the same. This is not a book about eating disorders - though they are intelligently discussed. Nor is it a book about how to get in shape. It's much more. The authors honestly address medical issues such as amenorrhea and osteoporosis, provide information on nutrition, injuries and maintaining optimal energy for performance. Most important of all, they are medical professionals finally urging athletic women to be as strong as they can be. For anyone who's ever struggled between the twin camps of thin and fit, this book MUST go to the top of the pile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers a gamut of issues concerning women athletes
The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide covers a gamut of issues concerning women athletes including eating disorders, amenorrhea, osteoporosis, body image. One of the most important chapters is on getting and giving help, forming a support team, getting referrals, the journey to recovery while continuing training, and communicating effectively with family, friends, teammates, and coaches. The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide concludes with an excellent chapter on "Peak Performance: Preventing the Triad" and sites specifically what the woman athlete can do, what her friends can do, what her family can do, what schools and organizations can do, what their men can do, and what coaches and athletic departments can do to assist the woman athlete to thrive, prosper, and perform in the competitive world of athletic competition. Highly recommended for personal, professional, and athletic department reference libraries, The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide is enhanced with references, resource lists, and a comprehensive index. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an alternative to the Fosomax party line
The only publication I've seen that doesn't slavishly recommend fosomax as the only way to reverse osteoporosis. I was heartened to see a positive review of this book from a physician on Amazon.com, because when Imentioned these authors' recommendation of calcium plus ipriflavone at alecture by a local internist, he dismissed it out of hand (and out ofignorance of its existence) as "one of those rumors that fly aroundthe Internet." The only problem is, how do you find a physician who iswilling to help you try this regimen, which apparently is far safer thanFosomax? The authors do not explain how to find a nutritionally orienteddoctor in a world of simplistic, cookie-cutter, prescription-pad,one-solution-for-all medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel compelled to recommend it to all of my patients.
As a physician, I found this book to be very informative and well written and does a great job of explaining exactly what is causing the bone tissue to lose calcium and therefore bone mass as we age.The book also explainshow calcium and other minerals and supplements exert their effect on thebone. As I said before, I strongly recommend this book for all women, regardless of age, if you have an interest in preventing or treating thisvery common condition. ...
