But I didn't know that much about the prevention side, and that is what this book is all about. How to prevent it.

Editorial Review

Heart disease affects almost 25 percent of Americans and causes almost a million deaths per year. Although women fear breast cancer more, only 1 woman in 27 dies from breast cancer, while 1 woman in 2 dies from heart disease. Kudos to James Rippe, M.D., associate professor of cardiology at Boston's Tufts University Medical School and director of the Rippe Health Assessment at Celebration Health and the Center for Lifestyle Research, for making such a serious subject accessible and even entertaining. In the style of the For Dummies books, the information is presented in a lively, simple, conversational manner, with easy-to-follow, skimmable text and helpful checklists. Rippe's main point is that there's plenty you can do to "maximize your cardiac function," reduce your risk of heart disease, and keep your heart working like a well-tuned orchestra. Learn how your heart works, how to keep it strong, and what puts it at risk for disease. Get a "healthy heart lifestyle plan" of nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction--straightforward and easy to implement. Control the four major contributing causes of heart disease: elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and being overweight.Understand the most common heart conditions and their tests, procedures, and rehabilitation. If you want a healthier heart--and who doesn't?--this is your guide. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I bought this book a few years ago after being diagnosed with MVP.I read the personal stories and felt great sympathy for the people who were experiencing so many symptoms which I didn't have. However, in the past two years, I have experienced many new symptoms and this book has been so reassuring and helpful in giving me ideas about how to control them.I have found Dr. Scordo to have much more knowledge about MVP than any of the primary care physicians I have visited. This book has been immensely helpful to me and I would highly recommend it to anyone diagnosed with MVP.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
At first I was a little concerned because of some of the negative reviews. But I did my research and found Dr. Scordo's information at the faculty site of her university. The book will speak for itself. It is excellent with excellent information. Love the stories of other people with MVPS and love all the helpful advice. I too am a teacher and appreciated the additional references in the book. Without any doubts, this is a great book for those who want to learn more about MVP!

This is a useful refernce book disguised as easy entertainment. It is loaded with the foods that are fun to eat and good for you at the same time. I heard Dr. Applegate say on the radio that heart disease takes alifetime to develop and only moments to kill and that over half the deathsthat occur every year are from some form of heart disease. So she scaredme into buying her book!It has a "Special Risks for Women"section which I made my Mom read. Now she is eating smarter and loves herdaily chocolate ration that is OK with Dr A.This book is on my nightstandand before I fall asleep I open the book at any random spot to see which ofthe 100 foods it opens to and I learn about a new food I had not thoughtabout before or one I am already eating regularly and why it is so good forme.Even though she is from a big University she keeps everything realsimple and easy to remember. It definitely changed my life and I feel myMother and I will live longer because of it.If you read this, thanks Dr.Applegate.

I took Dr. Applegate's nutrition class about ten years ago and she was so cool. She knows everything! She teaches nutrition science to more college students than anyone in the world, over 2,000 a year.I liked her bookbecause I can spend a couple of minutes looking at one or two of her"100 super foods"and learn something fun and neat to know without having to read a whole chapter.(I didn't know avocados andchocolate were good for me.)Her book also showed me how easy all thatgood/bad cholesterol thing is to understand and how to keep your bloodstream loaded with the right stuff.I trust all her tips and tricks abouteating right because she is a professor at the University of California.Iam giving my parents a copy so they will live longer. I feel more energeticafter making one of her power shakes. Her cool smoothie recipes are greaton a hot day.And they are extra tasty knowing they are making mehealthier.I take her "super food" list with me to thesupermarket so I will buy the best foods. The book is easy to read, and atrusty quick reference guide for information that shows you how to live alonger, healthier life. ... We're a lonely society. Twenty-five percent of American householdsconsist of one person living alone; 50 percent of American marriages end indivorce (affecting more than a million children); 30 percent of American birthsin 1991 were to unmarried women. These factors are linked to an increased riskof premature death, according to loneliness specialist James J. Lynch, Ph.D.,who has spent almost four decades clarifying how loneliness contributes to amarked increased risk of developing premature coronary heart disease. "Mortalityrates in the United States for all causes of death, and not just for heartdisease, are consistently higher for divorced, single, and widowed individualsof both sexes and all races," writes Lynch in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great overview of alternative medicine
This book was a great resource for my family, since each of us has different health concerns.Whether you are worried about cancer, strokes or other problems, this book answers your questions simply and directly.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to understand
I found this book very readable. It makes complex topics easy for the normal person to understand. I am fascinated about the possibility that we may one day have physical immortality. This is the only book about telomerase (the immortality enzyme)that I can find which is easy to read and not too technical. I also enjoyed Dr. Minton's ideas on which of the competing theories about aging are most likely to be correct.

1-0 out of 5 stars Title doesn't reflect content
This book simply reviews all the articles previously written about telomerase. Pages 13-22 repeat the info about telomerase; then the following few pages talk about other reasons why cells die. (After all none of us are really immortal). There is no new information in any of this.Read more
