5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive
I am a registered nurse, and I really enjoyed reading this book.It was written for the layperson, but I found it extremely clarifying and useful as well.Although women are the target audience, the basic heart information is also good for men.It talks about anatomy and physiology of the heart, info on various heart conditions, cardiac medications, cardiac tests and medical procedures, cardiac rehabilitation, and finally how to keep your heart healthy: through exercise, nutritious diet, stratagies for de-stressing, and quitting smoking. She also incorporates scientific research throughout the book, but uses it wisely.I highly recommend reading this book if you are interested in your heart health. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Touch and 'feeling that you matter'heal
A focus on a critical aspect of healing - the spiritual dimension. The power of touch was probably most aptly pointed out in a group of patients suffering potentially fatal irregular heartbeat and how those patients whose pulse was checked by a nurse had a far greater incidence of reverting back to normal heartbeat than those who were solely mechanically monitored.
3-0 out of 5 stars To Love and Be Loved....
With this book, I have found another who spent the night in the Clinton White House.Previously, I reviewed YOU'RE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR NEXT ONE by Mike Medavoy, a movie producer, who with his wife Irene also had that honor.Basking in the success of his third book, STRESS, DIET AND YOUR HEART, reaching #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. And yet he felt unsatisfied, discontented and lonely. So much for success!
5-0 out of 5 stars Points the way to better health and greater happiness.
One of the biggest chapters in this book summarizes the studies showing how closeness to other people is good for your health. Ornish runs a clinic for people who have had a heart attack. And his clinic was the first to show that heart disease can actually be reversed. Doctors used to believe, up until very recently, that you can't reverse heart disease. You may be able to slow it down a little, but once your arteries were clogged, it was gospel that you couldn't unclog them. Ornish showed that you can. They use diet and exercise and...teaching people how to become closer to the people they love. And that increased closeness is a big part of the patient's improvement in health.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent backstage story of a monumental study
In a well-narrated, affectionate account of the Framingham study, its current director and a medical journalist, present the study's origins, crises, and ambitious agenda. The book starts off on a fairly dramatic note with a fast-paced account of FDR's final days, which sets the background of the rest of the book. Then, in crisp chapters, the authors present various aspects of the early stages of the study. The chapters dealing with the impact of cholestrol on heart diseases and that of blood pressure on cardiac health are perhaps the best written. The book is a little marred by the sudden shift in the narration style in the last few chapters where the author (probably refering to the lead author alone) use first person account for narration, rather than the third person reporting employed for the earlier chapters. The strong sections of the book will make a reader wish that the authors had explored a bit more in detail about where the future would lead in these trials. The book captures the lead "actors" of the study, since its inception, the loyalty and enthusiasm of the volunteers very inspiringly. One can also see how developments in technology, and analytical methods changed the direction of the study making for a very interesting read. A must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars The people of Framingham have indeed made a difference
Americans everywhere owe a huge debt of gratitude to the citizens of Framingham, Massachusetts who for more than 50 years have voluntarily participated in the groundbreaking Framingham Heart Study. When the study was conceived back in 1948 very little was known about cardiovascular disease."A Change of Heart" examines the history of the Framingham Heart Study, its methodology and most importantly introduces the reader to some of those who were directly involved in the program both as administrators and as participants. It is a story worth telling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping Tale about the Framingham Heart Study
A wonderfully told story about the trials and tribulations of the Famingham Heart Study, it's dedicated and unyielding supporters who helped to bring it to fruition, its heart felt gratitude to the people of Framingham for their enthusiastic involvement making this study possible, and of course its enormous contribution to the understanding and causes of cardiovascular disease which is now moving on to new dimensions and still yet unexplored areas of research. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disease Reprieve
I beleive the information in this book is based on sound research and I applaude Dr. McDaniel for his work. However,in my opinion, the book is written in language suitable only for other physicians or persons with a background of biochemistry. I was hoping that I, as a lay-person with interest in this field, could have learned more about what I could do personally to help myself avoid cardiovascular disease. I expected more "How To" information and was a bit dissapointed in that respect. The only thing I learned from the book was to not eat processed foods high in sodium and to drink more pure non-mineral water but not water that has been processed by a water softener. I will try to struggle through the rest of the material again but it is probably too technical for me or most readers, especially if they are already starting into their "Golden Years".

4-0 out of 5 stars A really good book
This is a major work by Dr T C McDaniel where he describes about the diseases of the circulation system. Disease Reprieve is not aimed at the lay man. He uses scientific terms which can be better understood by the doctor community.Since the basis for the book is the author's personal experiences, people who understand what they read will have a definite change in their views about the whole life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Disease Reprieve - Zeta Potential & Heart Disease
Perhaps I should have given the book five stars instead of four as it is certainly a major work. The first part is very high in technobabble and I would have stopped reading it as the terms were very scientific and way over my head. The second half or so got into the real topic of the book and explained very clearly and concisely as to how diseases of the circulatory system develope. It was not an easy read but the information from it is paramount. The reader, if he/she can understand what they are reading, will experience a paradigm shift in their thinking about health and disease. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING, BUT FALLS SHORT
This book covers much material that is not new, but which is interpreted in a new way. Other authors have written about forms of intelligence and learning that don't seem to depend on the brain or intellect. Larry Dossey's concept of non-local consciousness, and Rupert Sheldrake's "morphic fields" arise from the same anecdotal evidence that Pearsall presents in this book. The difference is that Pearsall attributes this unexplained knowledge source to the heart, the most powerful organ in our bodies. Pearsall believes he has found evidence that the heart (as well as other cells in our bodies) retains memories about us and possibly about other people with whom we are close (and maybe holds ancestral memories as well).5-0 out of 5 stars Getting your head together, with your heart
Dr. Pearsall has hit a home run in a ballpark unfamiliar to most ordinary people who still think that the brain in your head is the mastermind of thought and behavior. What Pearsall has contributed, especially in terms of learning, creativity and memory is to reshape our foundations of perception that "love, dignity, relationships and integrity" might, after all, be the driving forces of human progress.Even if one considers "The Heart's Code" as a mere metaphor for our consciousness, without the empirical evidence of the role of the heart in human thought,Dr. Pearsall moves us closer to an integration of body, mind and spirit in a pracitical way, empowered by the heart.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Concept - Boring Book
While I accept the theories presented in the book I think Pearsall worked so hard to appear completely scientific that the book became incrediblely boring. He repeated himself in an effort to appear seriously scientific and lost the humaness of his story. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but contains errors and not sufficiently comprehensive
Professor MacGregor is to be applauded for his efforts at informing the public about the hidden salt in foods, especially in convenience foods, and for seeking to bring about a reduction in the levels of salt added to food by manufacturers. He and his co-author have enlarged on these matters and other aspects of salt in this book. Unfortunately two glaring errors render the book less than helpful to those most in danger of or most harmed by salt. No mention is made of obese steroid victims, whose weight gain is caused by sodium and water retention, and who would lose much of their excess weight by curtailing their salt intake. And the book states categorically that HRT does not cause these problems, whereas it is, sadly, many women's experience that HRT does indeed cause severe water retention and weight gain. Like the steroidees, obese HRT victims would also lose excess water/weight by curtailing salt intake. Let us hope that if a revised edition is produced these errors will be corrected and that it will also advise that patients taking steroids or HRT should be warned not to eat salt or foods containing salt while taking their medication.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Important Book
Excuse the cliche, but everyone should read this book. After an interesting historical overview on human consumption of salt, the authors present a clear and compelling argument about the strong link between salt/sodium consumption and disease.I recommend that people interested in this should also read "The Salt Solution", which is perhaps a more accessible, shorter, and simpler book with a similar message. This book is an excellent companion to "The Salt Solution" because it lays out, in a more traditional academic style, the evidence from medical research studies published in reputable journals, the indisputable harmful effects of salt/sodium.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every male over 40!
This is an excellent visual experience that drives home the need for starting, and continuing, healthy heart practices. This is such a tremendous eye-opening experience that I gave a copy to the people who run the Heart Re-hab sessions at the local hospital - where I went for two months. I also gave one to my brother, who had a quadruple bypass about five years ago, because he was not taking as good care of himself as is loved ones wanted him to.

Call this book Healthy Heart 101. The pictures are spectacular. The prose is basic, which isn't all bad. I consider this a decent reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Informative & Helpful
"The Heart Attack Germ" packs a wealth of information into its pages. I'd read a little about the idea that infection causes (or at least may contribute to) heart disease, but I couldn't find a book on the topic until I came across this one. The authors tell you everything you need to know about this new theory and the research data that support it. There's also a detailed section on exactly what your doctor is looking for during an office visit - all those mysterious things like patting your back and telling you to cough are explained in detail. The book is well-written, in a breezy, conversational style with a sense of humor. If you want to know more about this emerging new view of heart disease and what it may mean for you, I recommend "The Heart Attack Germ." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very boring, reads like a textbook.
I found this book to be very boring. I bought it because I had seen it referanced in a lot of magazine articles. It may be good for looking up useful information on heart disease, but not really a preventative book. The diet recommended in this book is unrealistic to me and seems like a diet that would be recommended to a person who was diagnosed with heart disease and had to change their lifestyle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but hard to keep reading
I bought this book because I had seen a lot of people referance from it in magazine articles so I assumed it would be very informative. While it is informative it is very much like reading a text book for me. I have had to read it in small portions at a time because so much information at one time gets pretty boring. I find myself taking notes while I read it so that I can remember key points that I felt were important. The "Mediterranean" diet that this book recommends for a healthy heart is really unrealistic in my opinion. It basically cuts out most foods that people enjoy eating and leaves a very bland diet. I love eating and I do try to eat healthy, but this diet is just too much. I would recommend this book as an informative book for women who have a family history of heart disease and enjoy reading very educational books on women's health.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent followup to "Left for Dead"! A must-read!
I completely concur with clangley's review of this book. Death by Deception is the followup book to Dick Quinn's earlier book Left for Dead. In this book, Dick's daughter explains how congestive heart failure is most frequently there waiting for the person who survives a heart attack. She elaborates how cayenne saved her father's life, but how her father relied on it too exclusively to keep him alive and subsequently didn't make the lifestyle changes necessary for him to avoid eventual heart failure. She then goes into excellent detail describing how heart failure develops and what exactly it is. She describes all of the conventional treatments for heart failure and elaborates on the strengths and ultimate weaknesses of these conventional treatments. She then describes a regimen of using natural herbs--including of course cayenne--that help keep both heart attack and congestive heart failure at bay.5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book on congestive heart failure (CHF)
I knew Dick Quinn well. I knew him very well. He was a good friend. Read more
