5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
It's hard to imagine finding more value for a few bucks than Jean Carper's various books, including 'Miracle Heart'.So I've given a couple dozen of these to friends, relatives, and employees.Because of this book, my wife & I have been on about 5 grams of citrus pectin per day (chapter 12) for a year and a half plus other recommendations longer. My dad & brother already have stents, and my wife's mother died of complications from strokes. We recently had our hearts scanned for hard plaque and both came up totally clean.Co-incidence?
4-0 out of 5 stars In addition to diet and exercise!
I understand the points of the previous reviewer. As a journalist, Carper might have included information from the studies he/she is referring to.However, I believe that those who are buying books like Miracle Heart arebecause they are already monitoring their diet and exercise to keep theirhearts healthy.Supplements do just that: supplement what we are alreadydoing.Co-Q10, ALA, HGH etc are not to replace choosing to exercise to eata healthy diet.I took Carper's information as a means to supplement whatI am already doing. My parents are taking Co-Q10 as part of their array ofsupplements and are feeling healthier. They get their supplements from asite called PapaNature because it offers documentation, a variety of brandsand door to door service.

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
This book summarizes much of the latest research on prevention of cardiovascular related diseases. The author covers almost all (forgot, e.g. "melatonin") of the bases in relating the latestdevelopments in diet related heart disease prevention, and as such I foundit an excellent informative book. The author reports the studies, theresults, the recommendations and the dosages relating to supplementation ofvitamins, minerals, some herbal products, omega 3, etc. etc.The bookcontains new information that I believe has yet to be widely disemminated.. I discern the same weakness in this book as in much of the currentinformation on diet, to wit, how to combine allinto a single plan oftreatment. The author might have reported to us that studies have yet tobe done on how these divergent benefits of supplements can beadvantageously and safely combined, but instead omitted any suchdiscussion. Additionally, and I note this as another suspected weaknessin my mind of the medical work currently being done on diet, it seems thatall of the information is coming out of what I consider to be highlysuspicious "population" studies, as opposed to research onindividuals( ormonkees) on the chemical effects on a single individual ofsupplementation. If I am going to take 1000 grams of vitamin C per day, Iwould like to know the immediate and long term chemical effect, as opposedto knowing that 6000 people lowered their risk of heart attack by 19% by sotaking. And, then, immediately after reading the book, what do we get butone study concludingthat excess C contributes to, rather than prevents, the problem. But as an educational tool this is a very fine effort! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The importance of CoQ10 for heart health written by an expert
Coenzyme Q10 (often abbreviated as CoQ10) is essential for human life. CoQ10 catalyzes the formation and utilization of energy in every human cell, including cells of the heart and heart muscle. Fortunately, our bodies manufacture CoQ10. Unfortunately, some people do not manufacture enough CoQ10 to keep them healthy, especially as they grow older. Research has shown that deficiency of CoQ10 is the major cause of cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, and other heart diseases and these diseases can often be cured by CoQ10 supplementation. In fact, many heart transplant candidates have no longer needed a heart transplant after supplementation with CoQ10. Dr. Stephen Sinatra -- a board-certified cardiologist -- is a world-renowned expert on CoQ10 and its health benefits. I beg your to buy and read this book and heed Dr. Sinatra's information and advice. For more details on CoQ10 you may wish to also read Dr. Sinatra's book The Coenzyme Q10 Phenomenon.

I found this book to be very useful. The introduction story was great, very moving. It would be interesting to see how things turn out for Maria. The whole book was easy to read and gave a lot of useful information. I myself am diabetic and I decided to try out Mr. Watson's suggestions. I would rate this book as one of the top on my list.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, sound advice, though studies are lacking
The one big reason why we use statins in daily clinical practice is not for the cholesterol lowering ability, but for the dramatic reductions shown in cardiovascular morbidity (disease occurence) and mortality (death). The Coronary Drug Project (1966-1975) was a randomized controlled trial that enrolled men between the ages of 30 and 65 who had already had one or more heartattacks, and randomized them to receive either niacin or placebo.Despite the impressive numbers that Dr. Parsons cites in his book, there were some significant drawbacks. The study did not enroll women or men of non-caucasian backgrounds, nor did it show impressive mortality benefit until about 6 or 7 years AFTER starting the drug.Statins have shown a role in both prevention of the first MI and prevention of recurrence, and separates from placebo at a much faster rate than Niacin did in its study.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Help At Last!
This book may literally be a lifesaver for me!5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Cholesterol Control
This book contains a wealth of information about preventing heart attack and stroke, not limited to cholesterol control--although that is its main thrust. As in the first edition, it teaches that diet has so little to do with your cholesterol level that we might as well say it has nothing to do with it. The problem is that you inherited a body factory that produces too much bad (LDL) cholesterol, not enough good (HDL) cholesterol, or to much triglyceride. Total cholesterol is essentially irrelevant; you and your doctor need to know and manage all of those fractions.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Glaring mistakes undermine the book's intention
If you have any medical knowledge in resuscitation, there are some glaring examples in the book that the author really doesn't know what happens in a resuscitation event. Examples like:5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and caring
I work in emergency medicine and was sure I would hate this book. But I actually like it very much. Timmermans gives a nuanced and empathetic view of resuscitating. He explains how paramedics and emergency room staff are trapped in a double bind. Relatives expect them to save lives but resuscitation techniques rarely succeed in saving lives. The result are unrealistic expectations. Timmermans does a good job exploring the colorful history of resuscitation techniques and the role of insurance companies and managed care. I only wish he paid more attention to automatic defibrillators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book.
I loved this book. It is on a painful topic but it answered some nagging questions for me. My mother died unexpectedly and I never forgave my father for not staying with her during her last moments and always wondered why CPR did not keep her alive. This book provided some answers. It is informative and compassionate. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleadingly Titled
A more accurate title for this book would be "The Spiritual Person's Guide to Coping With Heart Surgery and Bypassing Depression." Although it contains much good (but poorly organized) practical advice, it also contains many of the homilies held so dear by members of that group. Those who share similar beliefs will find it comforting, while others are likely to find it cloying.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to avoid depression after heart surgery.
I was fortunate to find a copy of this excellent book which prevented me from being depressed after my triple bypass surgery on August 5, 1999. Having read it, I was prepared for the outcome BEFORE the surgery. It waslike having the shop manual for an automobile in your hand. I wouldrecommend it to anyone who will have open heart surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ESSENTIAL FOR ANYONE ABOUT TO UNDERGO HEART SURGERY
I found this book after my mother underwent valve replacement surgery and was experiencing deep depression. If we had had this book BEFORE the experience we both think things would have gone a great deal better.I cannot recommend it highly enough; the book is very clear on the actual process of heart surgery as well as the aftermath and road to recovery.A beautiful treatment of the psychological issues raised by this experience for both the patient and his or her family. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's time for new ideas
Let's face it: Eating more broccoli and fish does not cure coronary heart disease. Yes, they're helpful parts of a broader preventive program, but I've met lots of vegetarians and health-conscious individuals with heart attacks. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Guide
Dr. Gould's book is a guide for everybody with coronary disease and everybody interested on coronary disease. It is an eye opening book that give hope against the number one killer of the modern era. Being an interventional cardiologist myself I realized the lack of cure achieved with angioplasty or by-pass surgery. An extensive medical literature shows that reduction on cardiac mortality or heart attack can only be achieved with a long term medical therapy and lifestyle changes.3-0 out of 5 stars Diluted but useful read for a heart patient
This book should be on the reading list of a conscientious heart patient. I admire the research by Dr. Gould which supports the superiority of cholesterol management over angioplasty and bypass surgery and of PET over standard stress tests. This being said, however, I have to confess that I did not like too much the presentation of those important findings. This is one of the books which should have remained a magazine article of 10-15 pages. The volume is expanded by means of endless repetitions, which would make it a suitable read for a patient with severe loss of short-term memory. Certainly this cannot be the only book a heart patient needs (as the author suggests) because it is too focused on the author's research interests and opinions. In fact I am quite happy that the invasive procedures have become so popular that they are widely available. I am not sure if I would have been alive now if the local hospital had had a staff trained in reversal treatment instead of angioplasty when I was brought there with a heart attack. Traditional heartbooks of the AHA and major clinics offer a much more balanced view on the heart disease and should still be consulted first while the books by individual researchers like Dr. Gould's should be regarded as a useful complement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt
I finally had the chance to read this book, which has been sitting on my night table for a while. Some books are easily forgettable - sometimes you can't even remember if you've read it or not. That is not the case with this beautifully written memoir - it has evoked feelings in me that remain strong even though a few weeks have passed. My father had an aortic valve replacement last year, and I've had my own episodes of arrhythmia and tachycardia, so I felt a real connection with both the science and emotion regarding the heart. The personal recollections are both honest and real, and kept me wanting more. It's such a delight to find a writer who is courageous enough to let the readers in for a glimpse into his personal relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science and Society
I am a very enthusiastic reader of medical memoirists such as Nuland, Solomon, and Seltzer, and after reading A Man After His Own Heart I'd place Siebert immediately in the same company, and a step better for the exceptional writing. These authors act as literary mediators between the general readership and science and health, where cultural myths and the obscurity of technical information cloud essential understanding of our bodies and ourselves, and ultimately of our own mortality, and perhaps worse, how our genetics may be used to marginalize us and our families. With all the personal pain and difficulty, struggling with the death of a father, and perhaps a genetic death sentence, Siebert, as a journalist, connects in a Whitmanesque way with people all over America suffering from heart disease, in its variants.Reading Siebert's book put me in mind of how critical it is to find a link between science and society, and how desperately we need such gifted authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul
Never have scientific and personal oddysseys been so deftly woven into whole cloth.Charles Siebert has allowed us to share a personal journey motivated by emotion but marked by intellectual discovery.Apparently, Mr. Seibert is a poet as well as a writer of prose, and his lyricism transforms material that might otherwise be drily academic into the stuff of poetry. And what better subject than the heart? The center, presumably, of our emotional life as well as the focus of complex science and medicine. All of this takes place in this book within the vehicle of a heart transplant operation, which provides a narrative movement that keeps the reader turning the pages. On the path of this riveting account of the writer's personal experience with a heart transplant team, there are surreal landscapes humanized by the characters embodying the scientific and medical details as well as personal landscapes, including Mr. Siebert's confrontations and reconciliations with his own heart and his father's failing heart, all vivified by factual understanding. The special effects in this book are real, making the reader see that knowledge is the true landscape of the imagination. Science has long been seen as the enemy of the spirit;here is one writer who marries the two with astounding results.Artificial hearts, transplanted hearts, broken hearts, and loving hearts:anyone with a heart will love this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good for some, but not for others
This book is great if your child has one of the defects listed in the contents page.I felt it gave a very detailed description of the defects listed as well as questions for the doctors and possible tests and corrections for each defect.I use this book often when talking to new parents about their child's defect. The only downfall in the book is that all 35 known cardiac defects aren't listed, so for many parents this may not be the right book for them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can get the same info free from the Amer Heart Assc brochure
Our baby was born 6 months ago with heart defects. Though I'm sure Ms. Wild is well intentioned, this book provides no more information than the American Heart Association's free publication on Congenital Heart Defectsin Children, which our Doctors gave us the day of our baby's diagnosis(that pub is easy to read, geared towards parents). Ms.Wild's book containsvery "surface level" information. Believe me, as a parent with ababy that has CHD, we want more information.I was disappointed, and I'msorry but I can not recommend that parents of children with heart defects purchase this book. We're still in search of a good pub that provides moreinformation.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an excellent guide. It is our personal handbook.
We found this book to be the perfect solution to so many unanswered questions about our daughter's heart defects. There is a section at the back of the book that our doctor actually used to draw the defect, so wecould visualize the problem. Then, he illustrated the repair. We will keepit forever. It was very easy to follow. Thank you to the author. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Heart Handbook
This book provided a general background about the heart, cholesterol and high blood pressure.I found the book did not provide me with any information that is already available for free from the Americn Heart Association.Several heart-wise recipes were included. The most helpful thing I noted was to eat an apple a day....

I'm 81 years old plus for the last 10 years I've been very sensitive to Blood Pressure Medicines, besides all the reactions to the drugs it didn't lower my BP.Most of the time it was 200/106.I was so miserable all thetime, I asked my doctor if I could stop them. After many more tries withseveral kinds of BP meds.He agreed to stop them.It was then that I gotthe book on how to lower your BP without drugs.Today my BP is 140/80 andI feel alive again. The information in the book is very clear andunderstandable. There's so much to learn in the book.It explains it allso well. ...
