5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is amazing. It addresses more than just hypertension. It looks at the way blood pressure links up with diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and even the selective information (and disinformation) we receive from the corporate and medical establishment about this condition. As someone who works with stroke patients every single day, I can tell you the tragedy is real. Not allowing this simple, common sense message to be more widely disseminated is flat out unethical. This book does disseminate it.It is a light shining in the wilderness!
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous!!!
I have been on blood pressure medication for over 15 years. I was first diagnosed with high BP when I was 24. I tried most of the BP medications and hated all of them. I had significant fatigue and lethargy with all of them. I read this book and took the recommendations with respect to a high potassium diet (high K factor). To make a long story short, I have been able to reduce the medication by 2/3. Realize that switching to this diet is not easy. But for me it was, as anything I felt would be better than continuing to take the toxic BP medication. I anticipate that I will be able to completely get off of them soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind opening, life changing
Dr. Cranton's book was the first I had read about possibilities beyond what traditional medicine insists are the only alternatives: bypass, angioplasty, heart catheterization, etc.(Notice that all of these treatments hurt, are dangerous, and often don't work.)My husband had just had a mild heart attack; and we had the good fortune to be in touch with one of the contributors to Dr. Cranton's book, a cardiologist who took my husband as a patient. He describes traditional treatment as "The Widow Maker."We studied Cranton, began chelation, and are healthier, 6 years later, than we've been in 20 years. This is valid information about a non-invasive and non-painful process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Culinary choice = health and heart condition
THE ROAD TO A HEALTHY HEART provides cardiac patients and their loved ones with a step-by-step guide to cooking which links culinary issues with health and heart connections, and represents a complete revision of the classic DON'T EAT YOUR HEART OUT COOKBOOK - a revision some ten years in the making. The Piscatella diet is at the heart of the matter and while 300 recipes pack ROAD TO A HEALTHY HEART, plenty of details on diet and nutrition are included too. A 'must' for any serious about health.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heart-worthy
This is the book for those looking for a sensible and doable approach to a heart-healthy lifestyle. There is plenty of detailed yet understandable information about your heart and how to treat it.The recipes provide flavor with their healthfulness. If you want a book with the facts without the fluff, this is the one to get.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is nothing more than a "talking points memo" for the FDA
Very disappointed in his research. All of his studies were conducted by a government research group of somekind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new conclusion regarding a metabolic disorder that affects at least one third of adults in industrialized countries
"The Potbelly Syndrome: How Common Germs Cause Obesity, Diabetes, and Heart Disease" presents a new conclusion regarding a metabolic disorder that affects at least one third of adults in industrialized countries. Co-authors Russell Farris (a retired artificial-intelligence researcher who, after sustaining a heart attack in 1998, began studying hart disease and related illnesses) and scientist, physician, and clinical teacher Per Marin have discovered that PBS (potbelly syndrome) is not caused by poor eating and exercise habits, instead it is caused by chronic infections, which lead to a pattern of slight, long-term excess of cortisol, a stress hormone. The effects of the excess cortisol can lead to blocked arteries, Type 2 diabetes, and raised cholesterol, insulin, and blood sugars. For those who suffer from PBS and are unable to correct their obesity through the usual prescribed methods of diet and exercise, "The Potbelly Syndrome" offers additional insight about the cause and possible approaches to correct the syndrome and lead to improved health. Filled with graphs, illustrations, examples, and practical information, "The Potbelly Syndrome" may lead to a rethinking of one of the most common yet challenging health conditions. A welcome addition to both academic and community library Health & Medicine collections, "The Potbelly Syndrome" is directly accessible to the non-specialist general reader, and has substantial value and appeal to health professionals as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING DISCOVERY.........
Whoa! I thought that I was healthy, Russell Farris and Per Marin will change how you look at your world. At least I can say that. This book is a wake-up call for people who can't seem to figure out why they are depressed, overweight, or constantly craving that sugary donut. This book has changed my thinking more that any other so called "diet" book out there. The relationship between how we deal with stressors (sugar, caffeine, catastrophic thinking, etc) is much more important than ANY other single thing we do for our health. You will never lose weight if you don't change your lifestyle to include more relaxation techniques. Period, end of story! Thanks Mr. Farris, and Dr. Marin!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach
This book is a radical departure from the usual approach to the mounting problem of obesity and the disorders that seem to always accompany it.Rather than the same old refrain about exercising more and eating less, it explores a different theory and approach to treating obesity, heart problems and diabetes. This is one of the few health related books that I have read that does not put all of the blame for weight problems on the overweight person. The author cites a multitude of references to support his theories, and some very good explanations regarding how our bodies actually function. There are some good practical suggestions on ways to reduce stress, and beleive me that you will see the need to do so after reading this book! I would recommend this book for anyone who has tried years of dieting with no lasting result. You owe it to yourself to dig deeper as to the possible cause of your weight and to seek alternative treatment. This book will encourage you to seek answers to your health problems and become more pro-active with your health care providers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Fat Diet Not for Everyone
15% of the population could be harmed by low-fat diets and unless you like playing Russian roulette with your life, you should find out if you're one of them (it requires a specific type of cholesterol test). This book is backed up by scientific studies and goes into relevant details of different types of cholesterol particles. It does take some effort to extract the infomation that is spread throughout the book but it is well within reach of most readers and well worth the effort.
4-0 out of 5 stars The first book to tell the lipoprotein story
Despite the broad awareness of cholesterol issues in the U.S., heart disease is rampant. A good part of the reason is that many people have causes for heart disease beyond cholesterol. Dr. Yannios has written the first book for the public that makes the complex issue of lipoprotein testing understandable for the average person. Lipoprotein testing fills in the huge gaps left by cholesterol, identifying risk for heart disease even in people with low or normal cholesterols. Dr Yannios talks about how shockingly often people who've suffered heart attacks (an often fatal event!) are told by their doctors that no cause can be identified, or that the causes are genetic and therefore untreatable. Absolute nonsense! Dr. Yannios tells us why.
5-0 out of 5 stars No fluff in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars To Lower Your Blood Pressure
In many cases of high blood pressure you will find that the fat is playing an upper hand. But all fats are not bad for health. Diet has an extremely important role in the treatment of Blood Pressure. Dr Scala clearly mentions about the effect of garlic in the treatment of High Blood Pressure.I have been taking a leave of garlic after each meal for the last so many years and I do not have any complaints with my blood pressure and digestion.I have seen people taking garlic in various forms like capsules etc.But eating natural garlic has the best medicinal value. One drawback may be the smell produced by garlic. But it is nothing compared with the benefits you get.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book, synopsis of good advice....
I've been reading extensively about HBP ever since I experienced a stroke last March. So far I find James Scala's book most useful. My physician suggested I lower my salt intake and Scala covers various aspects of the role sodium plays in the body's functions including it's relationship with potassium (K-factor).Potassium is awfully important and most of us don't get enough of it, but sometimes it is difficult to get enough without eating too much sodium. Scala has some easy to follow suggestions regarding the consumption of sodium, including "Start each day with a cereal that has more potassium than sodium..."As oatmeal is a winner, I can eat that or another cooked ceral or if I'm in a hurry, I can eat one of the several dry cereals one can pour from a box, such as the Nabisco Shredded Wheat I've eaten since I was a child and others. Dr. Scala is a certified nutrition specialist who has written a number of books addressing the consumption of food and a particular ailment affecting the human body. 4-0 out of 5 stars Really helps
It's not magic or a miracle cure, but the ideas and checklists in this book will help you control your diet -- and blood pressure. Give it a try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A cardiologist tells how to keep yourself healthy.
Cardiologist, Dr.Stephen Sinatra, is best know for his excellent book The Coenzyme Q10 Phenomenon which discusses in detail the role of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in maintaining a strong, healthy heart. While CoQ10 is indeed essential for heart health so is the less well known nutrient L-carnitine. L-carnitine is so important to our bodies -- especially our hearts -- that our bodies manufacture it every day. Unfortunately, however, many people don't manufacture enough L-carnitine to maintain optimum health and some people manufacture so little L-carnitine that their heart muscles become severly weakened for lack of it. Fortunately, L-carnitine is readily available as a nutritional supplement so that anyone who is deficient in this important nutrient can remedy this deficiency by taking supplemental L-carnitine. For people who are deficient in L-carnitine, supplementation can significantly improve their health, and for those who are severly deficienct it can even save their lives. All of this is discussed by Dr. Sinatra in highly-readable terms in this excellent book. Incidentally, L-carnitine not only helps keep our hearts healthy and gives us energy it also helps us burn fat and thus can contribute to weight loss. All health conscious people would do well to read this important book.

5-0 out of 5 stars L-Carnitine & exercise go together
Like his other works, Sinatra once again blends good, solid informaiton with an easy to understand style. The information he sets forth gives much credence to our need to supplement in our defense against the effects ofthe toxins we have dumped into our environment. As our lives get morestressful, our bodies - especially our heart - need supplements that aren'tin high enough quantities in the foods we eat.Sinatra explains thenecessity of L-Carnitine in maintaining healthy heart funciton. It is anadvantageous supplement for exercise buffs and vital for those of us whodon't exercise as much as we ought to.We are especially the ones who needto buy (and read!)Sinatra's books. ... In chapter after chapter you learn of ways tocontrol, or even reverse, the progression of the disease. The chapter ofVitamins tells of the vital role of antioxidants, a role that is only nowbeing confirmed and used by the established medical community. The chapteronIV EDTA Chelation therapy will astound you with it's implications. Ihave read it from cover to cover and find it totally fascinating. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with Real Q's & A's that are relevant
My new born daughter was recently diagnosed with Complex Congential Heart Defects and naturally I wanted to learn as much as I could about the topic.I purchased several related boks through Amazon.com and founf this one to be very relevant and answered lots of appropriate questions for me.I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Heart Defects of any type.It is very thorough and covers every defect I am aware of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents of Kids with CHD's
I loved the question/answer format of this book.It made an overwhelming and complicated topic far more understandable. I wish this book had been available when our son was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Vessels 12 years ago.We had so many questions, and while the doctors and nurses were super, a resource like this would have been invaluable becuase the questions don't stop when you finally leave the hospital!I'm sure the authors will keep the book as up-to-date as possible, but just know that cutting edge research is improving the methods of diagnosing and treating chd's every day.So, if the treatment protocol your doctor recommends isn't listed, don't panic. You might be benefiting from the latest research! When our son had his surgery, the Arterial Switch operation, which is now standard procedure, was only being done at a handful of hospitals around the country.Kids born with chd's today have a much better outlook thanks to the advances made by research. And, with more research, tomorrow will be even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Guide For All Parents
My son Noah was diagnosed in-utero with a VSD and at the age of 9 days received his first sonogram and EKG. The VSD closed - confirmed at his 1-year appointment, but was diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis at this same appointment. This book guides one through diagnosis, parental coping, issues/caring for the newly born, answers many of your obvious and not so obvious questions, surgery - what to expect/how to prepare and the likely impact your childs'condition may have on his/her life basis current knowledge. It also is full of annecdotal stories from parents that are going through the same thing you are as well as commentary from pediatric cardiologists. Additionally, there are resources from the internet to camps in the appendicies. No doubt, the book is at times depressing, but it is also enlightening. The undelying message is you need to be prepared for what you and your child are yet to experience and it is a map to guide you in this area ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Sinatra.
After discovering I had a very serious heart arythmia, I went on a quest to find information on how I could treat the root of my condition instead of just taking drugs (that had serious side effects). This book has literally changed my life. I currently am doing very well using what I learned from this book and drinking a Hawthorne Berry tea. This book is very deep, authentic and comprehensive. I have no ties to the author and I must say that if you know anyone with a heart condition who is willing to do some self examination, this book will give them incredibly important and useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great credentials - interesting points - makes you think
Dr. Sinatra is both a cardiologist and a psychologist, a rare and useful combination. The thesis of this book is stated way back on page 239:Read more

Editorial Review

"Heart disease is a woman's greatest health threat," writes cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, M.D. Until recently, heart research was done on men, and women were considered "small men." But women are quite different from men in physiology and patterns, and require a targeted approach. Goldberg's mission is to help women prevent or manage heart disease by understanding their unique symptoms, risk factors, prevention options, medical treatments, lifestyle choices, hormones, supplements, and recovery methods. 5-0 out of 5 stars What I Wish I Had Known
Our daughter Jenny died suddenly at the age of 21.She has been under the care of a cardiologist for high blood pressure.Jenny developed symptons of heart disease that went unrecognized.5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of useable information.
Many medical books written by doctors are hard to read, dry, boring, technical.Reading this book is like talking to a friend who is not only very knowledgeable but also very concerned. There is good medical information, and practical information on how to set up a personal plan for preventing heart disease and talking to your doctor.Best of all it is written by a woman for women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Menopausal Woman
After all the press on HRT, I was petrified that there was no option for heart disease prevention. I bought Dr.Goldberg's book after listening to her on KOMO radio.Dr. Goldberg's thorough review of HRT and its problems was easy to understand and made a lot of sense. I now know there are many options for heart disease prevention as well as osteoporosis and menopause. I only wish I was in New York and could see her as a patient. ... Read more
