5-0 out of 5 stars Readable with lots of good information
In response to a family emergency, I ordered four books on stoke recovery. Two had been recommended to me as being helpful for lay people: (1) "Living With Stroke: A Guide For Families" (Senelick, Rossi & Dougherty, 1999) and (2) "Stoke and the Family: A New Guide" (Stein, 2004). I ordered these for my family members (and myself). Two more were written at a much more scholarly, technical level for clinicans: (3) "Recovery after Stroke" (Barnes, Dobkin, & Bogousslavsky, Eds, 2005), and (4) "Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach" (Gillen & Burkhardt, Eds, 2004).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
My aunt became partially incapacitated by a stroke at the age of 55, and I took on the responsibility of assisting her in her day-to-day activities.I bought a number of books on stroke, but found this one to be by far the most comprehensive and sensitively written on the subject.Dr. Stein's book describes the wide range of severity that strokes can take and offers in-depth guidance on how best to adapt to life after stroke.I especially appreciated that the author explained the medical implications of stroke in layperson's terms that I could understand without a scientific background. If you buy one book on this subject, let this be the one -- I recommend this book without reservation to anyone whose family has been touched by stroke. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars book review
This book offers a wide variety of treatment options (dietary/ behavioral modification, use of various supplements) in the treatment of hypertension, as well as a comprehensive review of the prescription medications available for this condition.I found the dietary suggestions quite helpful, and this is one of the few books I have read which offers sound advice on use of dietary supplements as well as their presumed mechanism of action.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book should not be your only source of information
I'm only giving this book 3 stars because I think someone needs to temper the other reviews with some common sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read
Dr. Mark Houston's book promoting nutrition and a healthy lifestyle as potent weapons in the fight against high blood pressure is absolutely excellent. It is refreshing to see an esteemed medical professional embrace alternative therapies rather than relying solely on prescription drugs and vague instructions to "lose weight, exercise, and eat healthier foods."It contains not only useful information and easy-to-understand guidelines for those battling hypertension, but also practical, sound advice for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle.I recommend this book with the highest enthusiasm! ... I had an opportunity to purchase and read Dr. Phibbs' latest text, "The Human Heart: A Basic Guide to Heart Disease," about a year ago. I was impressed with the breadth of the commentary and theorganization of the material. I work in thepharmaceutical industry and Ireadmany technical and instructive materials. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is amazing information and it does work!
I had a b/p of 130/90 -145/94 I am 55. I was suppose to go on lisinopril but every time I started to get the prescrip. I couldn't do it--it just felt wrong. So, I started researching high b/p and signed up for google alerts(on H/P) and one thing lead to another and to this book. I decided to get the book and follow it. I was never a salt-lover, just the opposite but when I started reading the labels of how much salt is in everything you buy--I was shocked.I would have been considered a "health nut"so, realizing that even by those standards, too much "salt" exsist even in Health Foods! I raised my potassium foods per day and added 300mg of Magnesium/potassium supplement by Country life. The drop in my b/p was amazing. It dropped to 115/72 to 117/75. BUT if I stray-- it goes right back up to the 130/90+ b/p. I am genetically thin-I only weight 100lbs. so being told I have high blood pressure was a shock. AND no one addressess H/P in thin people. Dr. Moore talks about "balance" and he is right-- for many people it does take maintaining a balance in your diet. If I eat out at restaurants all weekend--the b/p goes back up. That has been a real eye-opener to how sensitive someone's body can be to what you eat. I wish he had a website. There is so much about high B/P in the news lately and since he wrote this book in 1993 it would be good to have his current prof. opinion. He wrote this book before 120/80 was considered High! So, Dr. Moore if you ever read your reviews--please set up a website!

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
This author maintains that blood pressure can be lowered naturally by maintaining a potassium to sodium ratio of 4/1 in your diet without using potassium supplements.I didn't believe it... until I tried it.Within a week, I went from 150/100 to 110/68.I can't wait to show to my doctor how well nutrition therapy works!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works
I was given this book by my wife after struggling (unsuccessfully) with a sudden and dangerous rise in my bp. I went from a lifetime of normal readings to stage 4 hypertension (190/160) at age 39. Over the course of the next nine months, I was on a variety of anti-hypertensives -- three different bp meds simultaneously -- at high doses with only limited success and terrible side effects. I read this book and a month or so later, decided to give Dr. Moore's theory a try. I followed the K factor diet for three months and also quit drinking caffeine. My bp's plunged within weeks and after a few months, I was off all but one med and that was reduced to a very low dose. My doctors -- including a nephrologist -- were stunned by the results. I can't recommend it enough. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Heart ailments kill more men and women in our country than any other disease--and every tissue in our body depends on the heart for survival. That makes this updated classic from one of the world's foremost medical centers a must-have reference guide for those who've already been diagnosed with heart disease, and for those at risk for developing it (which, given our dietary habits and the prevalence of obesity, is basically the majority of Americans--studies show the arteries of most teens are already partially clogged).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not enough information
I found this book to be a summary of all the collective knowledge I have previously obtained on the subject of high blood pressure.I purchased the book looking forward to following their suggested eating plan, however, the receipes do not contain any information with respect to number of servings, calories, sodium content, fat content, etc.You never quite know if that Spinach Pie you just wolfed down was meant to be shared amongst 2 or 6 people.Because of this, I had to give up as I just don't have the time to calculate appropriate servings size, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for ladies only?
OK, I'm humble enough to admit I was wrong. When one of my best friends, a Volvo-driving soccer mom if there ever was one, suggested that I read and PURCHASE "Into The Blue", I was skeptical at best. Scenario: author and sister rehabilitate stroke-afflicted father so he can - *gag* - fly again. Yet another "chick" book. Ho-hum.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story
This book is the fascinating story of two sisters and their dad who was suffering froma stroke. The sisters are determined to get him back to his airplane. In this book the author underlines the support a patient needs from his doctor for a fast and safe recovery. This book will definitely be a welcome read to any one suffered from a stroke.

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy guide to staying healthy
When not one but four relatives gave me this book over the holidays, I knew they were trying to tell me something: you need to slow down on the bacon.
5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me - great book
Ater reading this book and following the advice I lost 30 pounds, my Triglycerides went from 266 to 53, my HDL went from 30 to 42 and my LDL went from 195 to 151, which totally blew my Doctor away, she said she had never seen results that good before, and without any drugs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to heart disease prevention.
If you're new to the heart disease conversation, Dr. Katz's book is a wonderful place to start. The book is about a great deal more than just cholesterol. It's probably among the most wide-ranging of healthy heart books available, with concise descriptions of causes of heart disease beyond cholesterol (including lipoprotein(a) and homocysteine), an excellent discussion of inflammation and the metabolic syndrome, good though brief discussions of several supplements (including coenzyme Q10 for people taking statin drugs, arginine, and functional foods).

Editorial Review

In the midst of a carb-cutting craze, Dr. Gabe Mirkin reminds us that not all carbohydrates are alike.Drawing on a post-Atkins approach, Dr. Mirkin and coauthor Diana Mirkin, approach eating and fitness in terms of a healthy hearts rather than a smaller jean size. The centerpiece of their approach is exercise paired with "ASH,"a meatless and whole grain diet designed to reduce chances of suffering from heart attack, diabetes and stroke. The "miracle" of the title refers to how quickly and dramatically this diet can lower blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol counts.Using an eight-week workbook format, the authors offer clear explanations of healthy heart concepts including cholesterol, blood sugar body fat and fiber. They offer accessible assessment tools (body mass index, the apple vs. pear body shape and the "pinch test"). Writing with a clear and engaging style, the Mirkins point readers toward the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, hardened arteries and dementia. As author of the bestselling Read more

Editorial Review

"It is our hidden emotions, the emotions we do not feel, that lead to hypertension," writes Samuel J. Mann, M.D., physician/researcher and Associate Professor at the Hypertension Center at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. "Becoming aware of our hidden emotions and dealing with them can enable both physical and emotional healing," he adds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for me
I actually bought this book quite a few years ago before I had even heard of Amazon.I had taken L-Arginine in my 30's for athletic reasons but stopped it when I had a bout of the shingles.I'm now slogging through my late 50'sand this year I developed very severe hypertension.I pulled this book out again and discovered that I was similar to several case studies they mentioned. My doctor pursued conventional treatment with a calcium channel blocker which was effective in getting me out of the danger zone but not out of the long term damage zone.I can only tolerate the minimum dose of the blocker because a slow pulse (as slow as President Bush) rules out any more medicine. After two months, I had not made a great deal of progress toward normal blood pressure and the doctor assured me that it was "good enough" for my age.I'm grateful for the progress I made because I believe I was headed toward a stroke. But I wanted to see if I could do better.Over the past month, I've slowly worked up from1 1/2 Grams of L-Arginine to slightly more or less than 6 Grams per day. After about 3 weeks, I was able to reduce the blood pressure down to anaverage of 135 over 84 with a pulse of 50.At that point, I felt comfortable resuming my exercise program. The only side effect I noticed was a crop of cold sores (this is explained in the book) at about 4 grams a day.I backed off for several days and then resumed.I had no other side effects.I should also say that I continue to take the Calcium Blocker, it is a very high quality medicine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful read to learn more about L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide
The Arginine Solution is a well written book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for information on the molecule known as Nitric Oxide. Nitric Oxide is a gaseous molecule made up of one Nitrogen and one Oxygen and often referred to simply as NO. It should not to be confused with Nitrous Oxide N20 which is better known as Laughing Gas.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, excellent, but totally ignorant of Vitamin C
This book is fascinating, loaded with important information. But they stay single-mindedly focused on arginine and nitric oxide, no doubt wary of diluting their message with other important facts. Here's one: Chronic vascular disease is the long-term result of damaged collagen from too little Vitamin C, leading to artery lesions patched up by Lipoprotein(a) with LDL cholesterol heaped on top.Did you know that acute scurvy leads to the same result, only much quicker? The root cause of heart disease was strongly proven by a landmark guinea pig study in 1992 by Matthias Rath at the Linus Pauling Institute, replicated in a genetically-mutated mouse study in 2000 at U North Carolina. And to reverse it, you take adequate Vitamin C, lysine, and proline.Sure, it appears that extra arginine is helpful for the 100% of us who have accumulated vascular disease from a life of ignorance and malnutrition, but what if we were to totally clear our arteries? How much extra arginine would we need then?No answer -- and the question is not even asked because they don't even mention Rath & Pauling, appalling in a 21st century book on heart disease.Read more

Editorial Review

The authors acknowledge that this book is not for everybody. It is not for the healthy eater who may enjoy second helpings of pasta but isn't compulsive or excessive about eating carbs. It is for the true carbohydrate addict who intensely craves sweets and starches and has a hormonal imbalance that can lead to heart disease if untreated.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for people with diabetes
I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.I followed the program this book advises. My blood sugar levels have dropped to normal ranges, 85 to 110. My blood pressure is back to a normal range also.I have even had to quit taking Amaryl because my blood sugar levels were getting too low.I have also lost 22 pounds in about five weeks. The program helps you from giving up because you may eat a reward meal with a high carb food once a day.I'm telling you it works!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Usually Do Diets
OK...so over the age of 50 I noticed that perhaps I had put on a few pounds.I still run and skate and workout. But I also eat. Many years ago I used the Scarsdale Diet if I needed to lose a few.Today it does nothing.So...I started to try Atkins.I saw the damn thing on the best seller list every week so I figured it had to have some credibility.5-0 out of 5 stars Not quite understanding.
I have read this book and am extremely impressed with everything in it except there are some parts that I don't understand. One is dressings on salads I cannot find a dressing out there that has no sugar or msg and also when you say sugar does that mean fructose and corn syrup too?I lost about 10 pounds in 4 days and I have felt great but now that it's been about one week since I have been on it I feel dragged so I don't know if I did something wrong or what. It would be nice to talk with someone about it, but I love the book!!I just want to understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Huge Help in Recovery
I purchased this book at the suggestion of a friend while I was recovering from Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery..(a triple bypass). I was in need of information that would help me recover and take me forward to avoid needing surgery in the future, to bring me back to a state of good health and to find ways to do it with little disruption. I had a few other books given to me, or suggested. I have found that The New Living Heart Diet is an amazingly complete "how to" manual for someone with heart disease or is trying to prevent it.I would reccommend it to a friend. ... Read more
