4-0 out of 5 stars The expert on insulin resistance
The lead researcher on HOW too many refined carbs can lead to coronary heart disease. His description of the HOW is quite valuable, if a little repetitive. His prescription for action is adequate with some useful material, but not really his forte.See the reviews of the hardcover version, which has a slightly different title.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Insulin Damage
This is a great book that will remain the "Classic" long after all others on this subject have faded. It's written by the physician who found Syndrome X and gives straight-up information on the subject of how uncontrolled insulin and glucose levels damage our health. Although there is a wealth of information on the internet, much of it is inaccurate or partially inaccurate, and that's the case with Syndrome X.All the other Syndrome X books that have been written were knock-offs published after this one by authors who knew far less about the subject. What you get in this book is 100% quality information and solutions that you can trust. However, it's not necessarily written for the customer who wants only touch-feely anecdotes; it tells us the real scoop. Reading the medical journals of new research emerging confirms everything in this book, and shows that high insulin levels can cause other horrible diseases besides Syndrome X, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, such as all these new ones that have been added to the list: colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, sleep breathing disorder, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, impaired cognitive (brain)function, polycystic ovary syndrome, and a couple of others disorders. This book is the best of the bunch. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but dietary guidelines not user friendly
This was the first book that explained to me what was happening with my health. I knew that my blood sugar was subject to highs and lows, and that I needed to lose weight, but when I tried, I would always fail. I was trying to follow the standard low fat, high carbohydrate diet advice, but was subject to carbohydrate cravings. When I tried high protein, I had kidney problems. 5-0 out of 5 stars Reverse and Prevent Heart Disease. Stop the Pain.
What's the number one killer in America? AIDS? Diabetes? Cancer? America's big killer is heart disease. In the United States, over 1.25 million heart attacks occur each year. To make matters worse many of those who suffer such attacks die before they reach a hospital. According to McDougall, "The cause of the most common form of heart disease is blockage of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The blockages, results of the condition known as atherosclerosis, are caused by plaques forming along the internal walls of the arteries. Eating rich foods loaded with cholesterol and fats leads to the formation of these plaques. Heredity is also a factor, but should not be over emphasized because at least half the American population is susceptible. Besides, you can do nothing about changing your heredity."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the book and TRY IT---I HAVE!!!
First off, the author is DICK QUINN and the book is a fabulous recounting of what happened to Dick Quinn after a heart attack and subsequent coronary artery bypass surgery. When a "full body scan" in 2002 showed I had badly occluded coronary arteries, I by luck, found a friend who had Dick's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Left for Dead
This book was very good. The author was very thorough in his explanation of his regimine.I found it to be a very informative book.My husband and I and several friends have been doing the Lecithin and the Cayenne for about a month, and our cholesterol has dropped several points.Mine went from 241 down to 174 in less than three weeks. My doctor was amazed at the results.
4-0 out of 5 stars HE WASN'T LYIN': HE WASN'T DYIN', THANKS TO CAYENNE!
Shortly after moving to Phoenix in 1995, I took a job in a health food store.I had not been there long when one day a gentleman approached and asked if we carried GRANULAR LECITHIN.I took him back to the refrigerated section, and in the course of conversation, he happened to mention being (as I recall) 80 years old.Well, I almost fell over!Never in my life had I met a person who looked so much younger than their age! Many people have told me that I look considerably younger than 45 (I always respond that I'm pickled from the years I spent LIQUIDATED on "Mad Dog" 20/20, Night Train, Thunderbird and other fine wines), but this guy was in a league by himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars I lost a lot of weight using this book.
I lost a lot of weight using the Fleming Program. I'm at my lowest weight in 28 years. It was easy for me to basically follow because a person can eat a large volume of food and not go hungry. The person just has to eat the right foods. The loss came at a rate of about a pound a week. I also lowered my blood pressure, cholesterol and pulse rate. I believe the Fleming Program is the healthiest program out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars 17 fruita a day ?
I think this book is right on. Very close to another fine book, Joel Fuhrman's "Eat to Live." But, if a small apple counts as 1 fruit, how could you eat 17 fruits a day in addition to all the vegetables etc. Fleming's menus contain nowhere near that many fruits. Surely there is some mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, following his plan I feel GREAT
The author, a nuclear cardiologist, does nice job explaining difficult medical concepts for the rest of us.His book is very similar to Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live".However, given his medical specialties he explains the same methodology in a very different manner.I found this book to be a nice complement to "Eat of Live."

5-0 out of 5 stars Educate yourself about stroke quickly
Make sure to get the newer (2001) version of this text.Amazon will be more than happy to send you a "new" earlier edition (1999) if you aren't careful.Unfortunately, the 1999 cover of "Living with Stroke" is of very low contrast, and thus difficult to read. So, older folks or people with low vision may be a bit put off by the cover.(But don't let this scare you away. The text within is large and readable.)The newer version may very well contain more up-to-date info.
5-0 out of 5 stars great resource!
this book has been fantastic for helping families and other caregivers of individuals who have suffered a stroke!this book hadn't been written back when my own father suffered his strokes.i really wish that it had been - it would have been of immense help to my own family.now, i am fortunate to be able to recommend it and lend it to families, who all find it to be well written, easy to read and understand, and full of helpful and practical advice in dealing with our loved one, protecting them, and helping us to communicate more clearly and cope more effectively.an excellent contribution to the field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Start with this book - it should be in every ER waiting room
Recently, my 31 year old, pregnant sister had an emergency c-section and then had complications that resulted in her suffering TWO strokes. Doctors would not tell us anything, no one could even tell us what they thought would happen with her. Luckily I found this book. This is a primer for strokes -- it gives everything from a lesson on how the brain works to how a rehabilitation program is put together, to how to cope emotionally as a caregiver. It is a quick read, chock full of substantial information, clear and well-written. You don't have to read straight through: it is well indexed and has a clear table of contents so you can get to the information you need most quickly. The most valuable part of the book is the glossary of terms that helps you navigate the medical-speak you are going to hear. Start with this book and you'll be equipped with solid information and understanding. This book was a godsend in a time of crisis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Overview of heart disease with new insights/recommendations
The title of this book struck me as a bit of hyperbole, since most people think of "cure" in the sense of disease eradication.I guess that goal might be achieved in some cases by strict adherence to Dr. Cooke's guidelines, but I think the term the term "cure" in the title is better understood in the sense of "treatment for a disease".Dr. Cooke himself tells you that a clinically available test for endothelial dysfunction is still not available. It therefore seems premature to suggest that these guidelines have proven to be a real "cure" in the sense most people use that word. However, I certainly don't doubt those who say that following Dr. Cooke's advice has resulted in their feeling much better. In fact, I intend to try his two weeks of menus and diet guidelines to see if it helps me. I settled on a "four stars" for this book because first, most of the material in its 310 pages is a re-hash of information that's already available elsewhere - for example, the benefits of fruits and vegetables, fiber, soy, fish oil, various supplements, aerobic exercise; and the dangers of elevated homocystein or low HDL etc. These recommendations could be found in virtually any recent book or website aiming to educate people about preventing or treating heart disease, although Dr. Cooke (and Ms. Zimmer) do a good job of bringing these topics together and explaining how they help with one's endothelium.Second, the diet recommendations include two weeks of menus and recipes, which is alright - but I think a more practical approach is to give readers a more detailed analysis of foods they should or should not eat, and explain why.For example, Dr. Atkins (whatever else you think of him) lists foods according to whether they should be consumed frequently, moderately, or rarely.A person can then plan their own menus without trying to follow a cookbook. You may not have, for example, easy access year around to fresh bunches of watercress and arugula, or edamame. (In fairness, most of the ingredients in Dr. Cooke's recipes are commonly available).I would prefer to consult a list of many foods and see whether consuming one was likely to be of benefitor was likely to be harmful.I could then take the foods that are available, or most appealing, to me and plan my consumption accordingly. If you haven't already purchasedother books which explain the advantages of a Mediterranean diet, exercise, weight loss, good and bad fats, and supplements like l-arginine and fish oil, then this book will provide information you may find revealing and helpful. The information about the role of the endothelium and nitric oxide will also be interesting to anybody dealing with heart disease and other problems related to a diseased endothelium (such as erectile dysfunction). And who knows, maybe you will be "cured".

4-0 out of 5 stars Get the insight's of the worlds #1 authority on l-arginine
Dr. Cooke is the world's number one expert on the nutritional supplement l-arginine and its antagonist, asymetric dimethylarginine. It's a mouthful, but among the keys to cardiovascular health. Dr. Cooke speaks with the authority of someone who has performed a huge amount of the "bench" research himself. If you're interested in knowing about the most powerful tools available to prevent heart attack and control cardiovascular risk, Dr. Cooke's book is a crucial addition to your library.

This information, and much more, is backed up by 28 pages of references.

Whitaker is an extremely easy to follow guide on hypertension, its reasons and effect on our body. The traditional medical establishment has very little clue as to what causes and what to do about many diseases. But, here the author knows his subject very well and is an expert in making the layman understand what he has to tell.Every person who is suffering from hypertension should read this book and their next visit to their doctors will be more enlightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lower your blood pressure and mitigate many other ailments with magnesium
Dr. Cohen's book does the public a great service in discussing the importance of magnesium for maintaining a healthy level of blood pressure. However, as Dr. Carolyn Dean discusses in her very important book The Miracle of Magnesium, magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the major factor -- in many other severe illnesses including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, diabetes, migraines and other headaches, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problems. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and many are severely deficient. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked by orthodox medical doctors, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation. While I recommend Dr. Cohen's book, I recommend even more highly Dr. Dean's more comprehensive (but easy to read) book The Miracle of Magnesium. Getting the right level of magnesium can not only mitigate a large number of seemingly-unrelated ailments, it may save your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars magnesium -- the forgotten piece of the jigsaw
This useful little book is in the same series as one I reviewed earlier (The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Sufferers).

1-0 out of 5 stars E for effort
I am agreeing to the comment of "E for effort" on this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing, but could have been better
The author's intentions were quite noble. Still, the writing was rather stiff. I give it an E for effort, but...would I buy a sequel? No way.

5-0 out of 5 stars From calorie charts to insurance claims
Unclog Your Arteries: How I Beat Atherosclerosis is the personal testimony of Gene McDougall, a man who used diet changes, vitamin supplements, prescription medications, basic lifestyle changes, and more to recover after his own clogged arteries nearly killed him in a heart attack. From calorie charts to insurance claims, Unclog Your Arteries is filled with useful forms and advice, and a welcome, highly recommended supplement (though emphatically not a replacement for a doctor's diagnosis and advice) for anyone who needs to improve their heart health and quickly. ...
