5-0 out of 5 stars A critical analysis of statin drug trials
This book by Uffe Ravnskov does for cholesterol what The Skeptical Environmentalist did for environmentalism. Sometimes we need to be prodded out of our complacency and this book does an admirable job. The other nice thing about this book is that it does not peddle faddish diets, vitamins or herbs, its just a good critical analysis of the existing data. It is also very well written, which makes for a very easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Thirteen Sins of Medical Statistics
The first sin is misdirection. Many studies indicated there were inverse relationships between mortality and cholesterol, especially at advanced age, and with women. The researchers ignored this, and stated unequivocally the data showed a direct proportional relationship between cholesterol and mortality.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Grain of Salt
This book is a review of research concerning heart disease, cholesterol, and diet. The author makes little attempt to be objective, and pushes continually for his opinion that research to date has not been able to prove conclusively that a diet high in cholesterol leads to heart disease. In the beginning of the book, he carefully lays out the logic for the reader, separating the main hypotheses concerning cholesterol so that he can then bring each into question in turn. For Ravnskov, the main hypotheses are: "a high-fat diet leads to high cholesterol levels in the blood" and "high cholesterol levels in the blood lead to arteriosclerosis and heart attacks."He also examines related hypotheses of perhaps lesser importance, such as "lowering your cholesterol level with lengthen your life" or "polyunsaturated oils are good for you".Each chapter begins with a description of what Ravnskov terms a "myth" concerning cholesterol or heart disease, which Ravnskov then counters with a critical analysis of the research purported to prove the claim contained in the "myth".

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium and CoQ10 can help
My wife suffered from mitral valve prolapse for several years until we discovered the many healing benefits of appropriate nutrient supplementation. Now that we take chelated magnesium and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) daily for heart health, her MVP symptoms have disappeared. Anyone wishing verification of the role of magnesium in mitigating the symptoms of mitral valve prolapse can find it discussed in Dr. Carolyn Dean's excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Another excellent book which also discusses the role of supplemental magnesium in relieving MVP is The Magnesium Factor by Dr. Mildred Seelig. Both of these books are available from Amazon at quite reasonable prices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!
This book has every detail of information you will ever need to understand MVPS.I have answered so many of my own questions by reading this book.I highly recommend to anyone who has been diagnosed w/ MVP/MVPS....you will learn so much about your symptoms and you will understand why your symptoms relate to MVP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting info.
Typical of diet books with lots of info that you hurry through to get to the meat of it. Pun not intended. Well researched and good diet to follow to get started on the program.

2-0 out of 5 stars you can get better info for free on the net
this book confused me. why did it need to be so mathmatically challenging?i don't want formulas and percentages.....just tell me what to do and how to do it. this plan is a good one, and i found better, easier to follow info on the net for free. i'm using maybe 5 pages out of this entire book to supplement the info i found. find it on clearance or borrow someone's copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bypassing Bypass
A very cogent, scholarly, current and relevant book. It helped me to make a critical decision to not undergo bypass surgery as recommended by my doctors. If you are forced to make the same decision, you must read this book before you decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning the truth
In 1974 as a senior at Kansas State College, finishing up my degree in Biology/Chemistry I chose for my senior research project "Cadmium poisoning in Blue Green Algae". In this study I learned, first hand, the value EDTA can have on living systems. Plant mitochondria and animal mitochondria operate in exactly the same way, producing energy for living systems. It happens that in the most fundamental "engine" of our bodies, the Krebs Cycle, living systems, both plant and animal, are vulnerable to heavy metal poisoning.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
This book is about the Chelation Therapy prcoess, but even more so, it is about how our bodies process elements from what we eat, and how we live our life and how the body processes substances, especially all the toxins that we comsume without even knowing it. There is alot of good statistical and medical information. And, why don't the vascular and cardiac specialists recommend this treatment in the cases where it could be very appropriate and life saving (as in the case of my mother which Chelation did save her from leg amputation!)?This book goes into some of the possible political reasons on the hush hush and widespread misconceptions about chelation practice. It is definiely a MUST READ. ... Editorial Review

In this lucid and revolutionary book, cardiologist Robert Superko counsels readers about how to outwit their genes by identifying "metabolic markers" that predict future heart attacks. "To make a preemptive strike, you have to know which factors are putting you in harm’s way," he explains. So rather than focusing on cholesterol count, Superko outlines a patient-doctor partnership to create a personal risk profile he calls a "cardiac fingerprint." Here’s the drill: Through a detailed self-assessment, patients identify a series of risk factors (family history, age, physical traits, medical conditions). If the risk profile is high, the next step is a physician- ordered blood test to identify metabolic markers (for example, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and lipoprotein) that indicate high risk for heart attack. Depending on the results, tests such as a carotid or intra-vascular ultrasound can pinpoint heart disease. With this data in hand, Dr. Superko is convinced that patients have the power to change their cardiac destiny. For each significant risk, he suggests prescriptive keys in diet, activity level, nutrition and medication. With writer Laura Tucker, Dr. Superko demystifies complex issues about heart health. His ideas are compelling and optimistic—he believes in a future when every heart attack will be an anomaly. The only challenge may be persuading your cholesterol counting doctor. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every one needs to read
This book is an amazing book. all my patients get one as part of my progam. This book give the full details and guideline. use it and you will reduce your risk of heart disease. I have over 800 patients in justover two years using the book and resolving chronic illness.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for both Dr and patient
I am a physician assistant in Cardiology and I have put into practice much of what this book teaches. Alot of it is what I've known for a long time but have not had alot of the research to back up my theories. I recommend it to every patient who has the slightest interest in taking control of their own health.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for understanding causes of heart disease
The lipoprotein story is a hard one to tell to the public, but Dr. Superko does an extraordinary job. He tells us in plain English just why the national obsession with cholesterol has misguided us, and how the superior insights provided by lipoprotein testing uncovers hidden heart disease risk far more effectively.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done introduction
This book is a nice summary of the subject covering the technical background of high blood pressure as well as treatments-including diet and exercise and drug therapy.Although most of us have primary hypertension-caused by hereditary factors, some have secondary hypertension, ie as a symptom of underlying conditions. The book does name the two most common ones: renal artery stenosis (RAS), about 1/100 odds and pheochromocytoma, about 1/1000 odds. Those taking more than three meds to control high blood pressure should be evaluated for these conditions (though some say the odds are so low, the tests are not worth the cost).
5-0 out of 5 stars great book for the average person with high blood pressure
As an RN I have referred many patients to this as well as other books published by the Mayo Clinic. The material is well written, understandable and offers valuable infomation on many topics surrounding high blood pressure, diet, medications, exercise, as well as alternative therapies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Information
I stopped smoking 8 months ago, and once I stopped I gained over 20lbs. I went to the doctor for several checks ups in a 2 month period, each time my pressure was taken. Each time it was a little high. I was diagnoised with Hypertension a mild case. In my book any case is enough....I was scared.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but there are other factors involved in calcification.
This book is the natural complement to "Calcification: the Aging Factor," by Mark Mayer. While these books are on the same subject, they are both very different in content. The Calcium Bomb is about nanobacteria; while "Calcification: the Aging Factor" talks about other factors that can contribute to calcifications.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Calcium Bomb
An interesting read on health but is it fact or fiction?Pretty scary if true as it is not main stream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Book
I just finished reading an extraordinary book, The Calcium Bomb: The Nanobacteria Link to Heart Disease and Cancer. It also explains for the first time, the possible etiology and outline for a real treatment of my own ailment (which I know quite a bit about) ankloysing spondylitis. This is a work of excellent investigative scholarship and if its basic premise is true, namely that nanobacteria create calcium shells to protect themselves and can only be killed once they are unsheathed, then it may be one of the most important health books ever written. The relationship between nanobacteria and atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis is portrayed convincingly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced overview of heart disease and treatment alternatives - provides pros and cons without insisting that it's the only way!
Although a pessimist could say that this is a low key ad for Dr. Whitaker's Wellness Institute, which in small part it is, the book provides a balanced view of just what causes heart disease and provides sobering thoughts on the fact that there is no "magic pill" or clear cut way to attack the problem.Differing views are presented and the background for such, although not clearly articulated in the book itself, is provided via the references so that the reader can further explore if more details are desired. The recipes section is somewhat of a waste of print but other than that I found the book very helpful in aiding in an understanding of heart disease and the array of possibilities for treating it.The book also pretty clearly delineates between a "preventative" program and a "reversal" program, dependent on one's personal situation and goals.

1-0 out of 5 stars CHELATION THERAPY IS QUACKERY
It's just that simple. There is NO credible clinical evidence that chelation therapists do anything for patients except lighten their bank accounts. If any chelation therapist wants to sue me for writing this, BRING IT ON!
3-0 out of 5 stars How do you know you're reversing heart disease?
How can you really know whether coronary heart disease is truly being reversed? Does just surviving until your next birthday suffice? Does not developing symptoms tell you anything? Does even losing 10 lbs really tell you whether coronary plaque has shrunk?

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the recipient of an internal cardioverter defibrillator after experiencing sudden cardiac death. This book was a wonderful help to both me and my family in dealing with theemotions of coming so close to death.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the breadth of what is included in this self-help book
Heartmates: A Guide for the Spousef the Heart Patient takes the loved one from the acute days of the partner's health crisis through personal feelings, issues and concerns, providing support for the "heartmate" as well as the patient. Relationship as well as family concerns are major topics of this self-help book. There is a thorough index, and the book can be read in one piece or in snippets as the heartmate becomes ready to struggle with the ongoing issues of her/his psycho-social-spiritual recovery. There is frank discussion of the most difficult issues, including the return of trust and intimacy in the couple's relationship as well as feeling isolated and crazy because of the grief that seems to be inappropriate because the patient has recovered. There is, since 1995, a companion self-help tool also available, The Heartmates Meditation Journal, an interactive healing tool taking the participant through a full year of recovery concerns. Both books are readily available, although the indication is listed as "backordered." ... Read more

For a 270 page book that focuses on only one subject, "The Homocysteine Revolution" should have included much more iformation on what a person should DO in order to have favorable Homocysteine levels -- especially when it comes to diet and other lifestyle habits.
5-0 out of 5 stars status quo is a death sentence
Excellent exposition of a revolution in medical science that will eventually save millions of lives.Besides, even if he is only half-rght, how tough can it be to take a few vitamins, eat your vegetables, cut down on donuts and doritos, and take a walk (preferably uphill) once in a while? Moreover, it is also an excellent and clear example of the entrenched members of a group suppressing an idea that would take away their income derived from maintaining current orthodoxy. This has always been true and always will be true. Why?After all, if you had attended college and graduate school and trained for 5 or more years beyond that, and accumulated $200k+ in debt to become qualified to perform open heart surgery (or pick whatever profession or skill you like), and to be elevated into a position of seeming god-like powers, and to be worshipped by the multitudes, and to hear the exalted "Doctor" pronounced before your name (egos please stand up!) and then someone came along with a new theory that said your patient could take 10 cents worth of vitamins every day and avoid your surgical specialty, don't you think you'd be a little resistant too?It is easy to say, well they have no integrity. But look at your own life, how many times do you resist a better idea or a change because it will mean a loss of income or prestige or might be a blow to your pride or ego?Keeping your expensive house and your porsche and your kids in private school and your wife out of divorce court is an extremely powerful incentive to maintain the status quo which is a 7-figure income for a heart surgeon.Sad but true and the most basic of human nature, preserving your own life and lifestyle. However, in this case, belief in the cholesterol theory of heart disease and that surgery is the only solution has lead to millions of deaths and untold billions in costs, money that could have been invested in many, many other worthwhile projects. So, a word to the wise:keep your eyes and minds open and look for this anti-growth phenomena behind every bit of resistance to a new idea, especially if it will impact somebodies income or fame or power or status, the pride and ego hooks that most of us hang our self-respect and self-worth on.Remember, the same powerful motivator that would keep silent a group of highly-educated, very intelligent, hard working and dedicated individuals, is the same motivator that will push a 14-year-old to murder to join a gang, simple human pride and eqo with the desire to be liked and accepted by his peers.Only a few courageous individuals in history, and Kilmer McCully can be counted among them, have been willing to throw away their careers and sometimes their lives for the sake of the highest human values - honesty and integrity and fierce dedication to truth.McCully should win the nobel prize for his work.We should also, every day, give thanks to him and that handful who have brought us this far in human history with their courageous, daring work and vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for those wishing to prevent heart disease
One of the most tragic medical blunders of the past few decades is the incorrect dogma that coronary artery disease -- and resultant heart attacks -- are caused primarily by cholesterol and "artery clogging fat." Yes, arteries clogged with plaque (which contains cholesterol and fat) can result in heart attacks, but there is abundant evidence that the mere presence of cholesterol and fats in the body does not, by itself, cause arterial plaque to form. In fact, many slender people with "ideal" cholesterol levels have plaque-filled arteries which result in heart attacks. What medical dogma has overlooked until quite recently is that plaque builds up only in arteries that have been wounded in some fashion. Arterial plaque is, in essence a form of scab that forms on wounded arteries to protect us from internal hemorrhaging. What causes wounded arteries? One cause is free radicals, which can be combatted by antioxidants. But a second major cause of arterial wounding -- and arterial plaque -- was discovered by the author of this book, Dr. Kilmer McCully: elevated concentrations in the blood of a chemical called homocysteine. Homocysteine is a natural product of the metabolism af an amino acid called methionine and, therefore, our body's always contain some homocysteine. Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid keep blood concentrations of homocysteine low enough to be safe. But deficiency of these vitamins can allow homocysteine to build up to concentrations that can wound our arteries and lead to the formation of arterial plaque -- which can eventually trigger a heart attack. Recent research has confirmed Dr. McCully's findings. If you want to understand the role of homocysteine in causing cardiovascular disease and resultant heart attacks -- and learn how to protect yourself from them -- I strongly suggest that you acquire and read this valuable book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium for life
This book is enlighting when you talk about the heart. It offers a really simple and cost effective way to maintain and manage certain aspects of your heart. You can basically add magnesium into your diet and what your body doesn't use will be elminated naturally into your urine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book
I learned a lot with this book. The only critics is that in my opinion the food classification in Appendix B should be given in terms of magnessium/calcium ratio rather than only magnessium (and better if further the potassium/sodium were given) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me hope!
I recommend this book to anyone who has been diagnosed or thinks they may have MVP. Lyn Fredrickson takes a rational approach and gives practical, medically sound advice for the person with MVP. After reading this book, I knew I was not dying, and I wasn't crazy. Ms. Fredrickson assured me my symptoms were real, and gave me hope for a life unchained from those symptoms. Don't pay any attention to the reader from State College, PA. They obviously did not read this book. Judge for yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars solid book
First and only book on MVP I have read.Read it while my heart was jumping out of my chest, on the road 2,400 miles from home.Have suffered "palpitations" for 20 years that doctors never have diagnosed. This book just hit home with things I have been feeling for a very long time.Turns out my mother has MVP.I feel this book helped me very much to feel better about what I "may" have.It gave me a lot of useful info on what to do.It is a basic AMA approach and discourse.

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the paper it is printed on
this book pokes fun at people with MVP and MVPS.the author spends toomuch time on her so called "neuroses" in people with MVP andMVPS.after reading this book i am convinced that the author wrote it onlyto convince people with MVP and MVPS that their physical condition isbasically all in their head.this is just another book that victimizes thevictom of a difficult to deal with medical disorder.also, book is veryout dated, and very much the opinion of the author not at all any realmedicine in this book. spend some more money on a more recent book on MVPand MVPS. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Heart failure survival
Although much of the information in this book was given to me at the hospital, it is an excelent review and fills in an abundance of additional stuff. The "whys" and "what to do" and prognosis are given, along with encouragement. It covers the present stage of cardiology and delves into the future advances. Specialized sections, like for caregivers, is indeed helpful. There are directions for getting additional information from books and on the Internet. This is the last additon that Marc Silver intends to write. He states that so much material is showing up on the Internet that a book is not needed. The problem with information on the net is that it is scattered about at different sites, so get the book while still in print. I recommend it.
