Sound Advice Based on Strong Research and Common Sense
This is the first book on heart health that I have read that makes the most logical sense and is the most uncomplicated to follow to improve overall health as well as strengthen the heart.

Poor title
The information in this book could be very useful to many people besides those who have heart problems. I read it to learn about the PACE method. I really liked the arguments in favor of abandoning long duration endurance exercises because it's not an activity that I particularly enjoy. I only subjected myself to that torture in the past because I thought it was essiential to improoving my health. However, I'm never going to do it again because this book provides good reasons against it and provides a much better alternative. I think that the PACE method provides a much better cardiovascular work out and best of all, it's far more enjoyable. I would recommend this book for people in general.

Doctor's Heart Cure
Having congestive heart failure I have searched for information to help me get healthy again.The Drs. didn't really have the answers.After many books I found the Dr's Heart Cure.It really hit the mark.I'm now benefiting from the advice in this book.It's a new look at an old problem.

The Dash Diet Action Plan
It was a great read. It was informative but not a boring. I would reccomend this to anyone.

This book makes it easy!
The other books, and the federal guidelines didn't make it easy to follow the DASH diet. Finally, a book that makes it practical. It has real life suggestions, without getting too bogged down in the minutia of how the research was done. This plan helped me lower my blood pressure. And I didn't expect that I would find it so easy to lose weight, too. Real common sense approach (that isn't really so common today). Definately recommended for anyone who wants a healthy way of eating, rather than a fad diet that makes big promises.

Good but overpriced
When I received this book, I almost thought it was the wrong book.Although there is a lot of information, much of it is common sense.I received another book that was less than $10 more but the author is well known and the book was three times the size with pictures and extensive information.If this DASH book is going to get many sales, the price definitely needs to drop.I was honestly expecting a lot of recipes and would never have ordered it if I hadn't seen it first.Sorry. ... This certainly is a purist's view, but that doesn't make it bad
I see a lot of critics of the Ornish diet suggested in the book; however, it certainly seems as if there is a lot of data available to document the results and support the promotion of the Ornish diet.However, I would strongly suggest reading both Dr. Dean Ornish's book on reversing heart disease and Dr. Julian Whitaker's book on the same.I think that the Whitaker book provides a much more practical view and also displays what may be a good diet (and life-style, etc) for (1) a healthy person that wants to prevent possibility of heart disease, a "preventative" approach, and (2) a person who has heart disease and needs a "reversal" approach.That said, Dr. Ornish's book is an eye-opener and does cause a concerned reader to focus on the level of discipline and focus that a "reversal" diet and life-style requires.

There are better books out there these days
After my older brother suddenly died of coronary artery disease at age 40 due to genetically high cholesterol, I needed to learn everything possible on the subject so that I could avoid suffering the same fate.I read all the books on the shelf, among them Dr. Ornish's.I disliked this book because it is rather narcissistic and is focused more on Dr. Ornish himself than on educating us about how to avoid heart disease.Take a look at chapter 1 and you'll see what I mean: "I was trained to treat hypertension..."; "I first became interested in conducting research on heart disease in 1975..."; "I began to wonder..."; "I went to the medical library and began reading extensively"; "It seemed like an exciting opportunity, so in 1977 I decided to take a year off..."; "I hadn't had enough clinical experience to be jaded..."; "I was unwittingly giving many of them hope for the first time since their illness had been diagnosed"; "I went back to medical school and graduated in 1980"; "From 1981 to 1984, I completed my internship and medical residency in Boston."; "In July 1984, I moved to San Francisco..."This is just the tedious first six pages.Trust me, it goes on and on like this.Do you want to learn about how the heart works?You'll finally get a few sentences on that subject when you get to page 42, squeezed in between more "I did this and I did that."You'll get a little info on LDL and HDL when you get to page 51.Sure, there is useful information within the 672 pages of this book, but you'll be forced to become an expert on Dr. Ornish and his life story to find it.And remember, this book is more than 15 years old.Perhaps back in 1990 he needed to devote 300 pages to convincing people that he was correct in believing that diet, exercise, and stress affect your risk of heart disease, but that that is common knowledge and not controversial now.The research is far more advanced in today's world.If you are interested in Dr. Ornish personally and the history of the study of heart disease in the 1970s and 1980s, you'll probably enjoy this book.But if you are serious about educating yourself on heart disease and how best to avoid it, I would recommend Dr. Robert Superko's "Before the Heart Attacks : A Revolutionary Approach to Detecting, Preventing, and Even Reversing Heart Disease" (2003) or Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz's "The Expert Guide to Beating Heart Disease: What You Absolutely Must Know" (2005).These books are more up to date and provide far more useful information.

Great Book
When I follow the diet and work on the other aspects of the program I feel better, lose weight, am happier and have better test results.The book is easy to read and understand.The program is not for the die hard meat lover.It takes commitment to follow.From the reviews I have read and comments from coworkers and friends, it also takes an open mind and balanced attention.I am currently purchasing this book for my adult son.It all depends on what a reader is looking for.Dr. Ornish does not give a quick fix.I am a believer. ... Most intelligent book on coronary heart diseas
Dr. Davis has written the most intelligent and easy to understand book on coronary artery disease that I have ever read.This book answered all the questions I had about coronary artery disease that I had been seeking for many years.Even as a nurse educator and lecturer on the topic, I had only a superficial understanding of the multiple causes and treatments.The information in the book is revolutionary, cutting edge medical treatment that most physicians aren't even aware of.

If you only read one book in the pursuit of heart health...this is the one!
Finally a cutting edge book that answers all the questions your doctor or cardiologist either didn't have the time to tell you in a short office visit, or much more likely had no idea about themselves. I had ordered about a dozen different books on heart disease from Amazon before I got to this gem. Certainly a long road to get here, but I probably wouldn't have appreciated this book as much until I read all the others!
A prevention program that makes sense!
As a registered nurse clinician working in cardiology, I read Dr. Davis' book with much interest.So many of our patients who have had coronary events in their lives have never been educated as to the root cause of their illness, or the approach to dealing with it.Finally, there is a tool that can be used in clinical practice and personal use that is easy to read, informational and inspirational in dealing with the questions that we as health care workers and consumers have in regard to the ravages of heart disease.I find myself frequently referring my patients to this book as a useful tool that demystifies this illness and gives a step by step approach to making the changes in one's life that will improve one's lot, hopefully before they become another statistic.I am truly grateful to Dr. Davis and the people whose stories he shared.Everyone in this field can learn much from his knowledge and wisdom.Thank you, Dr. Davis!!! ... The Heart Can Thrive on Positive Thoughts.
Dr. Oz, the heart wizard, is of Turkish descent and attempts to combine East and West traditions of healing during post-surgery.He is a heart surgeon located in New York City.First of all,he is searching for the elusive one universal healing endeavor.Some things we all need are recommended such as Love is a major healing force, as is religious faith in one God.He is of the opinion that modern medicine is not perfect.Nothing is perfect, not even beauty, he says.

It worked for me!
I got this book last year.It is simple and easy to read. I ordered the supplements immediately.In 3 months I had lowered my cholesterol 28 points so the Dr. did not make me try a prescription.Even with a foot injury and not exercising, the eating habits and taking the phytosterols this year, my cholesterol was down even more.I highly recommend it!

Wonderful; couldn't put it down
This book does a wonderful job of bringing the story of the world's first HUMAN heart-transplant to life--and for those of us who might be in the medical field--some insight, down the road, of what must have driven other heart surgeons.Remember, the University of Mississippi's James Hardy?Did you know that he used a Baboon's heart--and implanted it into a human?Later, in the 1980's, did you know Dr. Bailey (Loma Linda) used a baby baboon's heart and put it into "Baby Fae"?Remember this?Heart surgeons have been plagued by the Prima Donna syndrome for years--and justifiably; however, this book UNDOES history's fame on Christan Barnard and makes him out to be a fame-driven, and ultimately, sorrowful individual stripped of his fellowship in the American College of Surgeons--while making the American surgeons (Drs. Shumway, Lower, Stinson, Kantrowitz) the real heroes of the heart transplant.I couldn't put this book down. . .and you won't be able to either.Christian Barnard's greatest achievment to science was NOT the heart transplant:it was his discovery of the cause of intestinal atresia, and the help his work in transplantation led the American's to re-define the definition of death from "heart" death to "brain-dead."The hero of the heart transplant is Richard Lower and Norman Shumway.Simply outstanding reading.

Buy it...
This is a fantastic book for learning all about the cholestrol which is the reason why I bought it.However, after I read it, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book to be better than most popular "diet" books out there.It's straight forward (with humor!), contains lots of informative facts, many handy references (web sites, phone numbers, statistics etc.,), considerate of the reader and not out to please any interest groups (i.e., honest).What more can you ask for!This book is well worth your money.

Useful
This is a book which thoroughly explores cholesterol. While user-friendly like all of the Dummies series, it is also written with grace and insight. I have found the book interesting and useful. I have completely stopped caffeine beverages, like coffee. After eliminating my coffee habit with the help of a wonderful coffee substitute made from soya beans called "Soyffee", I'm feeling so much better. Lighthearted but accurate reference for cholesterol control
As with many of the "For Dummies" series, Controlling Cholesterol is a well-executed overview of many issues relevant to cholesterol. Author Carol Rinzler's light and humorous discussion ranges from a concise description of what cholesterol is, to many of the different approaches to lowering cholesterol and why "target" values for cholesterol can differ in different people. There's an especially helpful discussion on the effects of various popular diets like Atkins', Sugar Busters, and Protein Power -- pluses and minuses of each.

Dash Diet works
Not only has the Dash Diet helped with my hypertenion, but I have also lost a few pounds which also helps.Following the suggested foods, you are automatically eating more healthy and have more energy.I would suggest it for anyone and not just those looking to help with hypertension.

Very easy diet!
This diet is very easy and I have already lost 8 pounds after only 3 weeks.My blood pressure is also dropping.The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that they do not offer any substitutions for foods that I do not like.

Interesting
I found the book to be very interesting and well-written. It explained a lot of different reasons why people have heart attacks and heart problems. But, I was ultimately disappointed because Dr. Guarnei didn't give any suggestions on how patients could help themselves. Well, yes, certainly one could move to the San Diego area and attend her alternative healing sessions - at $50.00 a pop - and you have to do two to three a week! Not for nothing is the site located in one of the wealtiert communities in the nation - La Jolla. I'm sure a lot of heart patients wish they had an extra $600 a month to learn to breathe. I would have been more empressed if the doctor had included a section of things real, normal people can do.

If we listen to the patient, they will provide their diagnosis....
Dr. Guarneri's book The Heart Speaks is full of realities in patient health. It is interesting to me to see the journey that Dr. Guarneri has made to provide quality of care rather than quantity of care to her patients. She has had to challenge what she has been taught and believed in order to develop as a doctor. She has had to adjust her own life so that she can try to understand what her patients need.
Excellent book, much needed in medicine
I loved this book. The Author takes you through her life in such a way that you understand medical school, her background and the philosophy in medicine we all live with. More importantly she details her transformation to a balanced view of medicine and what is needed today with a more spiritual, healing side along with the science. Great Cholesterol resource
The worst thing about health research is that what's considered healthy today is considered bad the next and revised back to good the day after that. Mr Kowalski makes this a great book because he collates all the best research, summarizes it and in most cases gives a rational recommendation based not just on the research but on the results he has achieved.
the best advice!
I've ordered this book before--I lend it out and replace it again and again. My friends always keep their copies because they have the same experience I have (and they want to keep the recipes on hand). Using its advice, I've successfully lowered my cholesterol dramatically without the dangerous drugs that are prescribed everywhere today. It's realistic, easy-to-read, and helpful.

It worked for me
I temporarily live in Australia, I went home (US) in January and had a physical, my cholesterol was sky high, they immediately put me on statin drugs, no diet, no health advice, just the drugs, forgot to mention female and 38.They wanted me to be re-tested in 3 months even though they knew I would be in AU at the time.I went to the Dr. here locally, he immediately took me off the drugs and wrote me a list: fish oil twice a day, metamucil for fiber, red wine and proactive (plant steriod).I also followed this book, and even though it was difficult to get some of the suppliments here locally, I did my best.After 3 months following the AU Dr. and Kowalski, I droped my tri-glycerides by 200 units, total cholesterol by over 40 and I have a chol/HDL ratio of 2.7.The doctor's advice was to stay with my current regiment.I will be re-tested in another 4 months and feel confident it will be much lower than present levels.The book gave me hope and the Dr. in Australia gave me a chance to cure bad cholesterol naturally.

A must read for all adults
Dr.Ignarro has written a most informative book in the easy read style. I read it in 2 days. I have already begun his suggested treatment. Nothing but feel good effects from supplementation he suggests.

TO " SUNNEE " a reviewer
I first read about NO in a book by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw called "Life Extension". Durk is a research scientist, MIT graduate, and Sandy Shaw is his girlfriend or maybe by now wife. She is also a scientist. They were , in my opinion, responsible for all the talk about antioxidants and their affect on destroying free radicals. In their book they speak about NO and of the many benifits it can have on your health. In order for it to be effective you need to take it at night before going to bed, as the NO is produced during sleep. You also need to take it on an empty stomach . The body tends to use nutrients in a rather competitive way in that they will tend to compete to see which one gets to the brain first. This doesn't apply to other supplements, as most like vitamins work best with foodThis is a simple way of putting it, but maybe you get the idea. By taking it on an empty stomach it can do what it is intended to do without interference. You can take L-Arginine alone or together with L-Ornithine. As stated before, in another review, you need to take at least 6 grams of L-Arginine or a combination of L-Arginine and L-Ornithine at a two to one ratio, 4 grams L-Arginine and 2 grams of L-ornithine, for example. You can purchase both at any good health food store. Some have it in two pound canisters, such as NOW NUTRITION for , depending where you you buy it and how much ,around $25.00 to $30.00 for two pounds of the L-Arginine. L-Ornithine is more expensive, and I have found it to be proportional to the ratio I mentioned above, at about twice the price for an equal amount, but twice as effective also. Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw use it as a precursor to Human Growth Hormone. The combination also causes to body to release more HGH while we sleep. As we age less and less HGH is produced, and the L-Arginine and the L-Ornithine, if you choose to use both or the L-Arginine alone cause the body to release more of what we have. This results in anti-aging, more muscle, less fat, smoother skin, normal blood pressure, and the list goes on and on. I don't tell you to take this, I only tell you what the research scientist are reporting. At the price mentioned above, this is far less than HERBALIFE at around $80-$90 for less than a pound, and it is ALL YOU NEED ! If you take other supplements do so at another time during the day, and not at night when you take the L-Arginine and L-Ornithine, it will only interfere with it's ability to be assimilated and utilized. The Book Life Extension is probably still available, and at 800 pages or so is filled with information about how the authors test all their findings on themselves. I hope this helps anyone reading it to decide for themselves. Good Health To All.

BE CAREFUL
I read this book, and it was interesting. I even tried a supplement called Cadio Discovery, developed by Dr. Murad, who worked with Ignarro on heart research. Cadio Discovery was sold at Wal Mart but I noticed that they are discontinuing the sales of the product, and the www.cardiodiscovery.com site seems to be permanently disabled. There are reports that L Arginine could be dangerous. In a recent study, men with a history of heart trouble were given L Arginine supplements, and a like group of men were given aplacebo. 6 of the men that were given L Arginine died during the study. None of the placebo group died. Please do your research before taking any of these products. ... Read more

Healing Wisdom
This book is a wonderful contribution to the healing of all women. Not only in her courageous confrontation with heart disease but equally important in her willingness to tell the truth.We need more women like her. Pamela tells her story so vividly and with such aching honesty. She empowers us all to speak from the depths of our experience. And her book is an inspiration, reminding us that every experience in life, no matter how painful can be an opportunity to grow and discover more about ourselves.

Great wake up call for women
This book may be a shocker for some people...but isn't this what we need?I found the book to be very informative and helpful - certainly the real deal.I would recommend that every woman with heart disease or a genetic predisposition to heart disease read this book!It doesn't get much better than this!

Not for the faint of heart!

A family guide
Having recently had a loved one who has suffered a devastating stroke, this book was so helpful in every aspect of what to expect on this very long journey to recovery.It was easy to read and to understand and I would highly recommend it to any family or caregiver who is going through this process with a loved one.

superb book
I read roughly three "health" books per week.It is my hobby.All of the books by Steve Sinatra are excellent, but so far, in my mind, this is the best!Dr. Sinatra writes clearly and succinctly.He is easy to understand.And, after reading a "gillion" health books, I think his answers to some of the problems addressed in the book are light years better than those presented elsewhere.This is a must read!

A Technical Read
After hearing Dr. Sinatra on NPR, I immediately ordered this book. Unfortunately for me, it is packed with so much technicalinformation I found it difficult and a little boring to read.

Important Information About Treatment for Heart Disease
The book logically presents information suggesting that there is a simple preventative treatment for heart disease.The author writes to the lay person, explaining the lack of information supporting the status quo - the supposedly heart-healthy low fat diet - and supporting his homocysteine hypothesis.The only short-coming of the book is in the final chapters, where the author over reaches the information presented and suggests control of homocysteine levels may be a cure all for a wide variety of conditions, including alzheimers and cancer.

I just received my book and have yet to read more than 30 pages.So far, I find the material interesting and the arguments convincing.More than anything, I wanted to comment on the review by "a reader"...and his or her suggestion that readers would be better off skipping the book and instead seek established medical advice.Just go to quackwatch.com, well known debunker of less than scientific studies and bogus health and nutrition theories, and read how much credence they give to the same ideas espoused in this book.I would add, who better to present the medical evidence than McCully himself, who in 1969, first described the vascular pathology [of heart disease] as it relates to homocysteine levels?

This book does a disservice for those who really want helpful information about diet.. Dr. McCully did not do himself any favors by allowing his daughter, Martha, a Fashion Magazine Beauty writer to co-author it.. just very badly written.. and it undermines his medical crediblity..Read more

If you still think cholesterol causes heart disease, this book's for you.
Have you taken meat & eggs out of your diet? Are you still trying to limit saturated fat to less than 10% of your total calories? Are you popping statins to keep that cholesterol level below the maximum de jure? How about some pills for that hypertension? Do you need more little brown bottles sitting on the bathroom vanity? Don't be fooled by the title of this book. Scott Deron takes the politically correct route through the "cholesterol & saturated fat" minefield, choosing dogma over science at every turn. Where's the new information about CRP in this book? Eighty percent of this book is a rehash of the same bromides we've been swallowing for 30 years. Cardiovascular disease, meanwhile, has continued to climb unabated. If you're looking for the root cause of cardiovascular disease, you won't find it in this book. If you're looking for interventions that split with the already-disproved AMA/AHA doctrine, you won't find that here either. Do yourself a favor. Use yourmoney to buy Colpo's "The Great Cholesterol Con", McCully's "The Heart Revolution" or Francis' "Never Be Sick Again". Your heart will love you for it. ... Read more

JNC VII
Whether a clinician or just someone who wants to learn more about the latest treatments for high blood pressure, if you buy a book about hypertension, make sure it incorporates that latest guidelines -- JNC VII (2003). Diagnosis and treatment guidelines changed substantially. I have a copy of this book and like it quite a bit but as far as I know, it has not been updated to include JNC VII recommendations.
