Understanding a disability
Hearing loss is a problem wherein the body cannot hear as well because it is DAMAGED! You can't fix the damage done to the cochlea where the damage has occurred -- instead, people need to come to terms and learn to do the best with what hearing they have left. This book is one of several that are great at helping people understand. Hearing Aids -- sold from a good competent audiologist -- is the key to understanding and making adjustments to maximize use of what hearing is left.

helpful to me! Confirms what I know.
One of the prior reviewers of this book was very negative. I disagree!As a hearing aid user for more than 40 years, I think this book is a good summary of the information that I need and have bought copies of it to educate my family and friends. I suspect the unhappy user was never correctly fitted with an adequate hearing aid and feels used and abused.I would have also been in that frame of mind if I had purchased my aids from the wrong audiologist.This book will help educate potential hearing aid users (and their families) to realistic expectations and hopefully lead them to good audiologists.

Misguided Philosophy
Nobody should have to cope with deafness. Nobody should have to adjust. One reads of all the advances made in science and technology, particularly in fields of medicine and what advances have they made in deaf research in the last forty years? Nothing. So, instead of doing anything about it, so-called doctors just spend their time ripping off deaf people of their hard earned money while hearing aid manufacturers andretailers make a fortune selling junk that, while of some benefit to people who are hard-of-hearing, provide absolutely no help to the severely or profoundly deaf and closed caption companies charge [per] hour to caption programs on TV that are garbled half the time. And the author says "cope with it." A bad book that offers no hope for a better future. Save what little money you have left after blowing it on useless hearing gadgets, visits to the quacks, and garbled captions paid for by the federal government from your taxes. ... Read more

Excellent treatise on problems experienced by a person with
From experience, I can verify the validity of the problems and heartily concur with many of her solutions.Also describes some of the potential drug interaction which could result.Gives very helpful lists of medications which might avoid further hearing deterioration.

absolutely excellent because it's practical, useful
I suffer from a partial hearing loss due to gunfire in the Vietnam War.This book helped me realize I was crazy to pretend I didn't have a problem.Now instead of enduring the pain when the subway noise gets too intense, Isimply stop my ears.Anne Pope got me over the embarrassment barrier.Shealso provided a reassurance for which I'm grateful.Even if my hearingloss gets worse I'll be able to cope with it.She has a fluent, simple,direct writing style.Even when the subject is the science of hearing andhearing loss, she makes it all clear.A fine book by a woman who has copedwith hearing loss herself.She knows her subject and how to help herreaders.

Good For Senior Patients

Read the qualifications carefully.
I would recommend many texts written on hearing aids for consumers and health care personnel far more than this one.While certainly a practical manual for dispensers, this is not a book meant for audiology students or medical professionals (try Harvey Dillon's Hearing Aids or the Valente series instead).A well-written introduction to the topic, but not grounded fully in medical and scientific research to be a primary text or reference for audiologists.

Excellent, balanced primer for parents
This book was a great source that helped me pull together so much of the information I'd heard about antibiotics - that they don't work, that they're overused, etc.The author does a fabulous job of summarizing the different types of pathogens that cause ear infections.He explains that not all ear infections are bacterial, and even among those that are, nearly two thirds would resolve themselves with or without antibiotics.This really helped me put in perspective all of those books that tout, "your children don't need antibiotics!"Most of the time they don't, agrees the author; however, he says, one third of bacterial ear infections do require antibiotics in order to resolve without complications.And he provides the gory details about those possible complications. gives anoverall goodview of antibiotics and surgery
I found the information on the different antibiotics that are used on childhood ear infections very helpful. Dr. Green gave a very brief over veiw of the alternative medicines and therapies available.He also leftout how airborne allergies and food allergies affect ear infections.Heseemed to lean towards surgery as an answer to ear recurrent earinfections. His advice on preparing your child for surgery was excellent. For parents who are trying to avoid surgery, I would look for another book.

Dr. Greene's book is a bible for parents whose children are experiencing ear infections at any degree.Clearly written, unbiased information about all there is to know about ear infections, antibiotics, surgery, tubes, andalternative therapy.Also, his website keeps parents up to date as to newdevelopments on this chronic condition. ...
